The Daewoo Matiz is a city car produced by the South
Korean automaker GM Daewoo from 1998-2001. It replaced the Daewoo Tico, a
variant of the 1988 Suzuki Alto. The car became the best selling Daewoo model
in Europe for the next four years. It was sold with different nameplates and
under many marques, depending on markets. In South Korea and many European
markets it had the code name M100. The exterior design is based on the
Lucciola, a Fiat Cinquecento concept by Giorgetto Giugiaro which was rejected
by Fiat. The 0.8-litre gasoline engine and the transmission were carryovers
from the Daewoo Tico.
Cheap to buy and operate, the Matiz’s native environment
is the slow traffic of a congested city such as Seoul, but is out of its
element on the open road.

Woo-Jin’s inexpensive Matiz provides a stark, visual
contrast of his middle-class status, compared to wealthy Hyung-Chul and the
powerful, luxurious BMWs he drives to ferry Sun-Mi about London and Seoul.
Shortly after starting his videographer job at MBS,
Woo-Jin shows up in this 2000 model Matiz to meet Sun-Mi on her college
campus, and ends up driving all three girls (Sun-Mi, Young-Mi, and Cho-Jeh)
to an MBS News on-location shoot.
When first dating Woo-Jin – as a car-deficient student –
Young-Mi is happy to ride in the Matiz. In several scenes it becomes a way to
flaunt her status as girlfriend as they drive off together, reinforcing that
Sun-Mi is now the ‘third wheel’ of the threesome. But once Young-Mi has her
job at MBS, she gets her own car, rather than be spotted riding in this lowly
vehicle, or be considered attached to its owner.
Ep.01 – Woo-Jin arrives at the university to give Sun-Mi,
Young-Mi and Cho-Jeh a ride to an MBS on-location shoot at Seoul City Hall.
