A long day had finally come to an end.  Kenneth rubbed his tired eyes and was ready to turn off the PC when the phone rang.

“Director Yoon, this is Dale.  Are you still in the office?”

“I was about to leave.  Is there anything I can do for you?”

“Oh, I just want to remind you about the dinner tonight.  You know, the one with the anchor trainees.  I hope you can make it, to show some support for our newest members.”

“Sure, I’ll be there.” Kenneth remembered the appointment. “Well, how are they?  Are they any good?”

“No question about it.  I think each and everyone is the bright future of MBS!”

Kenneth rang off and smiled to himself.  He liked Dale.  He was a great help to him.  His guidance and connections were what made the first few weeks at MBS as smooth and successful as they were for Kenneth.

He left the office and, after checking the time, decided to take a stroll in the building.  This was a new habit of his.  At this hour, most people had left for home and the usually bustling hallways were deserted.  He liked to walk about in the silence and collect his thoughts.

“Please don’t kill yourself!”

Kenneth stopped.  In front of him at a corner, a girl was holding a cell phone, talking earnestly into it.  With her back to Kenneth, all he could see were the beige suit she wore and a pair of nice, long legs.

“I’m sure he did not mean it.  He loves you!  Oh, please don’t cry!” From the girl’s voice, she was near tears too.

Kenneth did not quite know what to do.  This was obviously a private matter and he had no right to intrude.  He should probably just walk away.  But, there was something in the girl’s worried voice that tugged at him and begged him to stay.  Just as he hesitated, the girl said something again.

“Julie, I will come right away.  Don’t do anything.  Just wait for me.” She stopped, and then continued. “The company dinner is nothing. It’s a dog and pony show for the big wig.  They won’t miss me.  So, just wait for me!”

Before she finished the sentence, she walked over to the stairwell and was gone in no time.

Kenneth still stood on the same spot.  But now the corridor was quiet again.  What had just happened?

------------
When he got to the restaurant, the group was on coffee and deserts already.

“Ah, the Director is here.  Welcome!”

After rounds of frantic introductions, he seized a moment to grab hold of Dale. “Is every new trainee here?”

“Yeah, I think so…” Dale was thinking.  “Oh, Nicole wasn’t here.  She called to say she had some emergency and couldn’t make it.”

“Emergency? I bet it’s a matter of life and death.”  Kenneth muttered.

“What? What did you say?”

Looking at Dale’s puzzled expression, Kenneth just shook his head dismissively.

So, Nicole was her name.  And he was right; she was a new anchor.  For reasons Kenneth could not fathom, knowing her name made him feel much better.  It’s as if a load was off his shoulders.  Now why would he worry?  A girl in a beige suit, with slim, long legs, and a voice filled with distress, concerns, and compassion…

“Director Yoon!”

Kenneth was brought back to the present by Dale’s voice.

“I said you can see for yourself what the new anchors have accomplished.  This week’s Happy Morning will show their pieces.  The segment is called Eyes into the World.”

“That’s great.  By the way, can you send the tapes to my office first thing in the morning?  I would like to have a preview.”

“Wow, you ARE concerned about the bright future of MBS!”

With laughter and cheers all around, the dinner ended on a high note.  Likewise, Kenneth found himself pleased and full of anticipation.  When tomorrow came, he would be able to watch that mysterious Nicole in action.  He simply couldn’t wait.

Kenneth stared at the close-up on the screen.  The hair style, the figure, and, of course, the voice.  Yes, this was the girl from yesterday.  The one on the phone calling him a big wig and blowing off a company dinner to the rescue of a friend.

At first he was a little disappointed at her choice of topic in Eyes into the World.  Silent do-gooders and volunteers.  Weren’t there a lot of them?  What’s so special about them that warranted Nicole’s attention and the precious air time?

But, as the interview with Mrs. Park continued, Kenneth found himself getting more and more interested.

Mrs. Park obviously came from a humble background.  She had a habit of looking downward whenever she talked.  She was also very conscientious about the camera and all the TV people around her.  It’s only when she talked to Nicole that her shyness disappeared and she came fully alive.  With Nicole, Mrs. Park was more confident, and she talked louder and clearer.

Kenneth’s instinct told him Mrs. Park was a golden witness, a person who appeared to be so honest and trust worthy that audience would eat her every word.  There’s no doubt in his mind that this show would touch on many hearts.

What about the anchor who discovered Mrs. Park and her story?  Kenneth rewound the tape and stopped at the place where Nicole was wiping away her tears along with a similarly teary-eyed Mrs. Park.

This girl sure was emotional.  Kenneth looked intently at Nicole’s face.  She was so young, and inexperienced.  But there was that strange quality that captured your eyes, demanded your attention, and Kenneth found yet again he could not look away.  Was it because the sincerity that oozed out of her?  Or the kindness?

Kenneth pushed on the intercom.

“Miss Lee, please ask Announcer Nicole to stop by my office.”

(to be continued)

Note: I wrote this in Chinese and here was trying my hand at translation.  Did you like it?  I could not find Sun-Dal’s English name so I used Dale.  The original story has 40 chapters.  If you guys like it, I will continue to translate it.  However I can’t promise a prompt delivery every time.  Like this week, I will be off to Japan for vacation.  So, I will pick it up when I come back.
Best,
AnnMichelle

Standing outside the Director’s office, Nicole took a deep breath.

But why?  Why had the Director summoned her?  From the looks of her colleagues, she could guess what they were thinking: It must be something really, really bad that she had done to warrant a face-to-face meeting with a manager so higher up.

Except she had not done anything bad or made any terrible mistakes recently!  Even Mr. Kim, her group leader, had just praised her for those much improved reports.

Unless…unless it’s for yesterday’s dinner…

Ah! The sacrifices she made for Julie!  The most annoying thing was that when she hurried over to Julie’s place, Julie’s boyfriend, Mark, had called to apologize and the two had already made up.  Thus she found Julie, not a worry in the world, sitting on bed listening to music and munching on a bag of M&Ms.

Nicole shook her head.  It’s no use delaying the inevitable.  Better to be brave and get it over with.

------------
“Miss Jin, please sit down.”

Director Yoon was surprisingly courteous.  He was very tall, and smiling.  He did not look angry or bothered.  Nicole decided to make the first move.

“Director Yoon, I am very sorry about missing last night’s dinner.”

“Are you?  I heard you had some kind of emergency…”

“Well, it’s really not that.  In fact…”

How could she put it?  Julie was feeling terrible at the time.  Was it so unreasonable for her to skip a company function so that she could comfort an old friend?  There’s really no need to make a big deal out of it.

“Anyway, I am truly sorry.”

“So, I trust everything is fine now.”  He said it like a statement, but his tone indicated otherwise.  Nicole glanced at him.  Now she was very irritated.  She apologized already, didn’t she?  What else did he want from her?

“Everything is fine.  If that’s all,” Nicole was ready to stand up, “I will just leave you to your work.”

“Actually, I wanted to see you about Eyes into the World.” Kenneth said quickly.  “You know what, how about let’s have lunch together, then we can discuss that in more detail.”

Seeing her hesitation, he added, “I would like to take you see another angel without wings.”

In a quiet alley not far from the MBS building, the roadside noodle stand only had 3 or 4 rickety tables and a faded wooden sign simply saying ‘Auntie’s.’

Nicole looked at Kenneth quizzically.

“They serve not just noodles; the rice dishes are equally good.”  Kenneth pulled a chair for Nicole to sit down.  He seemed very familiar with the setup.

“Kenneth, here you are!” A plump woman walked toward them.  She was about sixty-ish, with strong arms and a big smile on the round face.

“Auntie Kim, see, I’ve brought more business to you.”

Auntie Kim looked at Kenneth and Nicole happily.  “Oh, you naughty boy…”

------------
“When I was a kid and my mom was too busy to cook, I always came here to eat.”  Kenneth pushed a seafood hot pot to Nicole’s side.

She took a spoonful of the soup.  It was very good.

“I find it difficult to imagine what Director Yoon was like as a kid.”

“What? You think I was born in a business suit?”

Nicole laughed so hard she almost spit the soup out.

“No! I meant since you were so rich, it’s strange for you to eat at a stand like this.”

Kenneth did not reply.  He just smiled at her.

“Oh, I am sorry.”  Nicole put down her chopsticks in embarrassment. “My mouth has run away from me again.”

“That’s quite all right.  Do you like the food?”

“Yes, I love it.  They are so delicious.  By the way, you said something about an angel without wings…”

“That’d be Auntie Kim.”  Kenneth nodded toward the woman laboring before the stove.  “In addition to feeding me, she’s taken care of many other kids who really needed help.”

“So, we do have lots of good people in this world.”  Nicole sighed.

“Was that the reason you wanted to do this segment, to show that people still care?”

“Yes.  Maybe you think I am too naïve, but I’ve always wanted to spread more good news around.  At least they give us hope.”

------------
On their way back to the station, Nicole seemed to make up her mind.

“Actually, yesterday I went to see a friend, because she was very upset.  That’s why I missed the dinner.  I am very sorry.”

“Your friend, is she OK now?”

“Yes, she is, totally.  Julie is a very normal person, most of the times.  But whenever her boyfriend picks a fight with her, she becomes impossible.”

“I am sure your boyfriend is more considerate.”

“Me?  I don’t have any boyfriend.”  Nicole smiled slightly.

Kenneth watched Nicole closely.  Was it his imagination?  Why did he detect a hint of regret and wishfulness in her reply?

 (5)

After some heated debate, Nicole’s segment finally won the competition and she became a guest co-host of the morning show.

“Congratulations!  I should have known.  Only brainless topics like yours would be embraced by the blind masses.”

Without the need to turn to look, Nicole knew the comment was coming from her compatriot --- Erica.

“Thank you very much for your kind words.”  Nicole replied coldly.

“You are welcome.”  Erica walked over and smiled at Nicole.  “What I am wondering is, how long does it take for the senior people to see through you…and your true ability.”

“I won’t let anyone down.”  Nicole forced herself to look Erica in the eye.  Being classmates with her for so long, Nicole knew the surest way to defeat Erica was to face her head on.

Erica gave Nicole a disgusted look and finally walked away.

Nicole sat down in her chair, numb and drained.

Even though she worked very hard, even though she believed in herself, she dreaded the run-ins with Erica.  They were so demoralizing and exhausting.  Before, she’d had Warren to talk about this stuff and maybe got some encouragement from him, now she did not even have that…

At that moment, she saw the blue envelop on her desk.

On the cover was her name written by a firm and strong hand in black ink.

Inside she found a note, with the same firm and neat handwriting.

“Dear Miss Jin,

I enjoyed your program very much.  It indeed brings hope to all of us.

I have attached a check from the Wen Ron Charity Trust, with which you may donate to any charity of your choice.

I look forward to your new programs.

Yours,

Yoon”

She read the short note twice.  Then she examined the check closely.  The person who signed the check…Yoon…Director Yoon.  She read out his name softly.  Kenneth Yoon.

Before the end of her Eyes into the World segment, she had included an introduction of several local charity organizations, hoping to drum up some support for them.  However, the producers felt she had used up too much time and opted to cut that part out.  Despite Nicole’s fight to save it, it was eventually cut and never broadcasted.  Now how would the Director know her pleas for support on behalf of those organizations?  Unless, he had gone through the troubles of getting a copy of the uncut original from the producers.  Did he really do that?

Nicole found her eyes misty again.

 (6)

It was very quiet on the executive floor.  Nicole stood uncertainly in front of the Director’s office.
She knew it was late, but could not resist checking to see if he was still in the office.

The office door was closed.  Shafts of light escaped from the bottom slit of the door.  From inside she could not hear anything.

He must have gone home.

She hesitated for a moment, and then slowly turned away.

“Miss Jin!  Are you looking for me?”  Kenneth’s voice was calling from behind.  With a few long strides, he was beside her.

“Oh, Director, you haven’t left yet.”  Nicole smiled at him.  Not knowing exactly why, she felt very happy.

“Do you have something you want to talk to me?”

“Not really.  I just came to say thank you.”  Nicole showed him the blue envelop in her hand.

“Don’t mention it.  You should thank yourself; after all, you earned it.”

“Is that so?  It seems not everyone believes I deserve it.”  Nicole was a little rueful.

“What happened?  Were there idle talks?”

“No, it’s nothing.  I am used to it anyway.”  Nicole changed the subject.  “You are busy.  I will let you go back to your work.”

“I am waiting for a phone call from the States.  Otherwise, I could give you a ride home.”  Kenneth felt very reluctant at seeing her go.

“You don’t have to do that.  I know you have tons of things to do.  How can I trouble you more?”

“You sounded like you did not quite believe a director needed to work hard too.”

“No, that’s not how I feel.  I’ve never thought you as a play…”  Nicole bit down her lip to stop herself.  Idiot!  What a complete idiot she was!

“A playboy?”  Kenneth finished for her, and smiled at her flushed cheeks.  “I’ve heard worse, so don’t feel bad about it.  It’s really OK.”

“You mean, you are not mad when people talk about you like that?”  Nicole murmured.

“What’s the use of getting mad?  Getting things done is much more important.”

When Kenneth said that, his tone was even and calm, as if he was talking about somebody else.  But, did he really not care?  He looked good humored but a little tired.  Watching him, Nicole suddenly saw this little boy, shoulders slouched, sitting at a rickety table, a bowl of noodles in front of him, all alone.

Then, the phone in the office rang.  Not waiting for him to say anything, Nicole just nodded, turned, and walked away.

------------
With a few quick instructions, Kenneth finished the phone conversation in record time.  Then he rushed downstair like a wind.

She should still be around.  Standing at the lobby, Kenneth looked at the elevator bay.

His haste was rewarded when Nicole walked out of one of the elevators.

“Director, why are you here?”

“I finished all I needed to do, so I am free to take you home.”

“Wow, you are very efficient!”  Nicole said happily.

“If I want to be a diretor, AND to have a girlfriend, I have to be efficient.”

Nicole did not know what to say.   What he was saying was that he needed to arrange his schedules better so that he could have a life outside of work, right?  That must be it, surely.

Kenneth looked at Nicole.  With her eyes lowered, he could only see those long, dark eyelashes, fluttering under the lights so enticingly.

He worked hard to shift his gaze away.

“My car is right in front.”

(to be continued)

Note: Both Kyoto and Tokyo were lovely.  We got to see the Cherry Blossom in Tokyo, which was a big bonus, but just people gazing at the train stations was fun enough.  I like the way they dressed, very subdued and understated (these were mostly working people, not funky teenagers of course).  Food was glorious too.  I will definitely go back.

Nicole was so used to riding with her father that she felt a little awkward in Kenneth’s BMW.

Father drove like the way he conducted his other business: slowly, carefully, and considerately.  He would not get ahead if he could stay behind.  He slowed down even when he did not have to.  Director Yoon?  Nicole felt that to him driving was more like a test to see how he could get the most out of the fabulous machine.  The car certainly did not disappoint.  Under Kenneth’s masterful control, it accelerated, decelerated, and shifted gears, all effortlessly and smoothly.

Also, Nicole thought shyly, his car smelled very nice.  The special aroma of new leather combined with the faint fragrance of the cologne he wore was something so good and exotic that she could not seem to get enough of.

They were approaching a crossroad.  Nicole said, “Director Yoon, I live in…”

Without waiting for her to finish, Kenneth interrupted her.  “I know where you live.”

Nicole looked at him in surprise.  Then, she realized something.

“Oh, that’s not fair.  You have read my personnel files.”

“Why is that unfair?  As a director, it’s my duty to know everything about the people working in MBS.  Especially talented people like you.”

“But, you know everything about me, while I know nothing about you!”  Nicole complained, pursing her lips.

“Fine.  Anything you want to know, just ask.”  Kenneth took up the attitude of a seasoned negotiator.  He enjoyed this verbal parry with Nicole very much.

“Well…” Nicole thought about it.  “Did you think about home a lot when you were studying in the UK?”

This was not what Kenneth had expected.  He’d thought Nicole would be interested in knowing how many people were in his family or his major in college or some such things.  He did not anticipate this question.

“An honest answer please!” Nicole tilted her head, looking him jokingly.

“Well, yes, I did.  I did not want to, but I could not help it.”

Now it was Nicole’s turn to be surprised.  The reason she asked the question was that no matter how confident and authoritative he appeared, she felt there was some reservations, or even a sense of aloofness about him.  Knowing that he was sent away quite young, Nicole suspected maybe that period of living alone was the cause.  His answer, though, seemed to indicate something more.

Nicole did not know what to say.

“Director…”

“My parents…they were separated a long time ago.”  Kenneth tried to smile, but did not quite make it.  “When I was thinking about home, I was not sure which one I should be thinking about.”

So that was it.  That was the reason behind the slight frowns, the sad smiles, and the aloofness.  Nicole felt very sad for him.  She shouldn’t have brought up the subject.

“Fortunately now you are all grown up.  You have your own home to think about.”

Her voice was so soft and comforting that he was compelled to turn and look at her.

Right then, they passed a night market.

“Ah, Director, could we stop here for a moment?  I’ll be right back.”

When she returned to the car, she carried a package with her.

“It’s too late; I don’t have time to make night snack for Father.  So I bought this.”

“You and your father are very close.  I envy you.”

“Ha!  If you ask Father, he would say I am way too bossy.”

------------
The finally arrived at Nicole’s house.  Nicole handed him a box.

“It’s cold noodle.”  She explained.  “Last time I saw you devouring them at Auntie’s stand.  I hope you will like this as well.”

Kenneth took the box from her as if in a trance.  He looked at the box, then back at Nicole.

“This is the first time anyone gives me a night snack.”

“Really?  As long as you are with me, there is no worry that you ever go hungry.”  She could not stop laughing at her own joke.

Still smiling, Nicole got off the car.

“Director Yoon, thank you so much for taking me home.”

“Nicole!” Kenneth stood by the car, calling out her name clearly.  “From now on, would you please call me Kenneth?  Right now everyone addresses me as Director; I am afraid the day would come when I don’t even remember my own name.”

Nicole looked into his eyes.  They were so pure, so honest, so full of hope.  She lowered her head and said shyly.

“Good night, Kenneth!”

After Nicole became the host of the morning show Happy Morning, her days were filled with both tension and excitement.

In the beginning, she was worried about the problems doing a live show inherently created.  What if she did not know how to respond to an unexpected situation?  What if she was too slow?  But after experiencing some of those situations, Nicole found out that she was not panicky at all.  On the contrary, perhaps due to the adrenaline rush, she was able to concentrate more and totally immerse herself in the here and now.  Besides, those impromptu moments were when she did not have to recite the scripts but to talk anything her thoughts brought her.   She found that experience exhilarating.

This day, before the camera, Nicole was debating with Dale about a new movie.  Kenneth stood at a corner, unnoticed, watching the two tease each other.  He was totally absorbed.

“Ha, you are running out of reasons.”  Nicole said jokingly.

Like a spring breeze, her smile traveled to Kenneth’s face.

Why did she have such a big influence over him?  Kenneth could not understand.  He only knew that if he did not see her face, or hear her voice, even for just one day, he would not feel right.

This feeling, this attachment, was a totally new thing for Kenneth.  And he was a little scared by its intensity.  But, oh, the glory it brought!

From the other end of the studio, Judith walked in.

Even though she left the show already, she sometimes visited Dale and the crew to cheer them on.  And that troublesome Nicole, of course.  Judith just hoped that the girl would mature quickly.

While nodding hello to the technicians, she caught a glimpse of Kenneth, standing by himself at a corner.

She was not surprised at finding Kenneth here as he was no stranger to the studios.  She knew that he liked to observe the taping of shows unobtrusively.

But his expressions now…those were what stunned Judith.  He was so rapt and so focused that nothing else seemed to exist at all.

Judith followed his unblinking gaze to the target, the person sitting on the stage.

Nicole…Nicole?  How was that possible?

Judith turned back to watch Kenneth closely.

There was no mistake.  She knew him too well.  The attention she had been craving for years was now directed whole-heartedly at Nicole.

For a moment, the realization almost took her breath away.

She knew that he did not love her.  Of course she knew that; he practically told her, if a bit obliquely, many times.  But, because she loved him too much, she was hoping maybe her love alone would be enough for both of them.  She believed she would make a good wife, always be there for him, and love him.  As long as he did not refuse, she was willing to wait for him to turn around.

But, seeing him now, Judith realized the depth of her delusion.  Here was the Kenneth that had never existed for her.  Her hopes were just an impossible dream.  For Kenneth, she was not the destiny, but an episode, a very unimportant episode.

“Judith, you are here too.”

The taping was done.  That most familiar voice called her back to the reality.

“Yeah, like you, I came to root for them.”

“You are such a good colleague, good senior.”  Kenneth smiled at her.

“Kenneth,” Judith forced herself to look him in the eye. “You and Nicole…don’t let it slip away.”

With a sad smile, she bid him good bye and left.

“Dear Warren,

How are you?  I tried to call you several times at your TV station, but they said you were out on assignments.  Please don’t work too hard.  Actually, I am quite busy too.  I have to get up really early for the morning show.  It’s so tiring!  But, I got a lot of good reviews too!  I don’t know if your neck of the wood can pick up my show.

We are all fine.  Daddy still travels a lot.  Just yesterday I went on a shopping spree with Auntie.  A secret: we bought a lot of things for YOU!  Now wait for the packages.”

Nicole looked at what she had written so far.  Should she include some news of HERS?  Even though Auntie said not to, that it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie, Nicole knew Warren still cared about her.

“Erica is doing really well too.  She became the 7 o’clock news anchor.  Everybody says she looks very confident; you could not tell she is new to this at all.”

Well, that should do it, right?  Nicole signed.

She really could not understand Erica.  When Warren and Erica broke up, she only said that she wanted to concentrate on her career, and did not want to be tied down so early.  Warren was too distraught for Nicole to ask anything.  Not long after that, he quit MBS, moved to another part of the country, and got a job there.  He loved Erica so much.  Why couldn’t she see that?  If it were she…

The phone rang.

“Nicole?  This is Kenneth.”

“Oh, Director…Hi, Kenneth.”

“Did I catch you at a bad time?”

“No, not at all.”  Nicole looked at the computer screen.  “I was just writing a letter to a friend.”

“Are you free this weekend?”

“Why do you ask?”

”I would like to invite you to go on an inspection tour with me.”

“Inspection?”

“Yes.  You see, I have been outside the country for too long.  I don’t quite know what the young people like anymore.  So, I need your help.”

“I still don’t know what you are talking about.”

“It’s OK.  This Saturday, I will pick you up at your house.”

Nicole frowned.  What was this?  But before she had a chance to say anything, Kenneth continued.

“And remember to bring your tennis shoes.”

------------
Kenneth hung up the phone and could not stop smiling.

After watching Nicole’s taping in the studio that day, he did not have time to do it again.  To satisfy his needs of seeing her, all he could do was to watch her morning shows on TV.  And that was not enough.  However, this weekend, he would have the chance to BE with her for a whole day.  Just the thought of that gave him indescribable pleasures.

As a matter of fact, he found he was always in a good mood these days.  There were a lot of things, some very unpleasant, for him to handle in the station.  But he was taking them on with enthusiasm.  Every morning he could not wait to go to work.  Was he fast becoming a workaholic?

The words Judith said to him suddenly came to mind:
Don’t let it slip away…

(10)

“Where are we going exactly?” Nicole asked as soon as she was in the car.

“Wow!  This is the first time I saw you in jeans.  You look so good!”

Nicole gave him a look.  “If you don’t tell me now, I am getting off!”

“OK, OK.” Kenneth replied good-humoredly.  “We are going to a new resort.  That company wants to sign a long term contract with MBS, to host our training, retreats, and other activities there.  We are going to take a look at their setting and facilities.”

“You alone can decide about this kind of things.  What do you need me for?”

“If I want to play tennis, I couldn’t possibly do it by myself, could I?”  Kenneth smiled.  “Also I heard you were in the high school varsity team.  You must be pretty good!”

Nicole was going to ask him something, but quickly remembered that troublesome personnel file.  She gave him another look.

“I don’t know if I am good or not.  But you can be sure that I won’t let you win!”

------------
A Miss Lee, business manager of the resort, greeted them.  Because MBS was a big account, Miss Lee, along with her underlings, was well prepared to shower the guests with attention and hospitality.  Now that the director himself, the famously handsome, obviously powerful, highly educated, and tremendously attractive Director Yoon, showed up, Miss Lee was determined to cover every front as if in a major battle.

Kenneth probably was very used to this kind of treatment and took it with equanimity and grace.  But Nicole, as a much lesser guest and virtually ignored, was secretly amazed.  She looked on all the activities centering on Kenneth with great amusement.

The tour of the resort ended at the tennis complex.  Knowing they wanted to play some tennis, Miss Lee left them there very reluctantly.

“Would you like to pick out an outfit from their shop?” Kenneth asked Nicole.

Nicole shook her head and gestured toward her shoulder bag.  “No, I’ve brought mine.  I just need to borrow a racket.”

------------
When they first started playing, they were feeling out each other’s games and style.

Kenneth’s height and long limbs made for powerful serves.  And his footwork was quite good too.  But Nicole was more accurate and had better control of the ball.  She was also the more experienced player.  Moreover, in trying her best to win, she played very aggressively.  Soon Kenneth was all over the place chasing the ball angled so impossibly by Nicole’s darnest efforts.

“Do you admit defeat?” Nicole asked proudly although she was totally exhausted too.

“Yes, yes, I surrender.  It looks like I have to beg you to be my coach.”

“Let me see if you have the stuff to be my student.” Nicole pretended to study him.

Kenneth gazed at Nicole’s tilted face, the cheeks a lovely shade of pink brought on by the exercise; those bright, smiling eyes seemed to be caressing him.  As if under a spell, he reached over to touch her soft hair.

“To help you make the decision, today’s lunch is on me.  Now how’s that for the first tuition?”

------------
When they got to the restaurant, Miss Lee was right at their heels.

This time even Kenneth was a little bit impatient.  After her sales pitch about the restaurant, Kenneth said, “Thank you so much for your hospitality.  I like your facilities here.  I will contact you once we make our decision.”

Miss Lee handed him her business card with her private numbers.  Before she left, she gave Nicole a hard stare.

Finally, they were left alone.  Sitting by a window with a nice view of the golf course, Nicole chuckled.

“That Miss Lee wished there was a hole in the ground to swallow me up!”

“You think so?  Why is that?”

“You mean you don’t know the reason? Don’t you know how difficult it is for a girl to find a nice boyfriend?  Not to mention one as qualified as you?”

“If that is the case,” Kenneth joked. “Aren’t you supposed to be a bit anxious too?”

“Anxious?  What’s the use?  Nobody would love an ordinary girl like me.”

“Who said you were ordinary?  Anyone who thought that must be as stupid and unfeeling as a rock.”

“Hey, why did you badmouth him?  You don’t even know…”

“I don’t know him?  Where is he?”  Kenneth sat up in his chair.  He watched Nicole closely.

Nicole lowered her head.

“It’s nothing.  It’s only my fantasy.”  She looked at Kenneth.  “He does not love me.”

Kenneth waited.

“We grew up together.  So, in his eyes, I am always the little sister.”

“Then,” Kenneth asked carefully.  “Are you still waiting for him?”

Nicole did not answer right away.  Kenneth found he started sweating again.

“No.  Now he is my good friend.  My good bro Warren.”

Not wanting to hold back anymore, Kenneth reached for her hand.  “Nicole, listen to me.”  He held her hand tightly in his and felt the jolt that traveled through his whole body.  “You are the loveliest girl in the world!”

They were very quiet on the way home.

Stealing a glance at Nicole's un-smiling face, Kenneth felt frustrated and anxious.  How did one go about professing his love?  Was he too direct?  Too fast?  Would she feel slighted, because of his hasty approach?  How could he explain?  How could he make her understand that everything happened so naturally, that he was not hasty, that he was just following his heart?  Kenneth Yoon liked Nicole Jin.  That's it.  There's no buts, no ifs, no maybes.

Nicole forced herself not to look at Kenneth.  She was still in shock.  Ever since the debacle with Warren, she had lost faith in love.  If someone as dear to her as Warren could not find the passion to love her, who else in the world could?  It certainly could not be this man, Kenneth Yoon, Director Yoon.  Even though he sat right next to her, so close that she could smell the aftershave and see the knuckles of his strong hands on the steering wheel, she felt a gulf of distance separating them.  This could not be real.  This was just a joke, a humorless joke.

"Are you OK?"

"Director Yoon," she said in a whisper, "You know, there is nothing special about me.  I am just a plain, ordinary girl."

"Call me Kenneth."

"Even if I called you Kenneth, in my mind, you are still Director Yoon."

"Nicole, I was born into the Yoon family, with all the so called privileges and obligations.  I accepted the fact and have no complaints.  But, that does not mean I don't have the rights to love the woman of my choosing, surely."

Nicole looked at him grumpily, not saying a word.

"Well, look at it this way.  If you really don't care for the idea, I will not mention it again.  But, I just want you to remember that every single word I said is true."

------------
Although Nicole was feeling down, for her father, she still managed to cook a decent dinner.

As she was picking at the food, her father asked, “What’s the matter?  You were in such a good mood this morning.”

“Dad,” Nicole put down her chopsticks.  “When did Mom and you fall in love?”

The sudden question gave her father pause.

“Why did you ask this?”

“Oh, I just wanted to know.”

Father noticed the sad expressions on her face.  She looked just like her mother.

“Well, there wasn’t an exact moment, really.  I just felt so comfortable being with her.”  He smiled shyly.  “It felt so natural, that I just wanted to be with her.  Always.”

Comfortable…natural…wanting to be together…

Was that it?  Could it be that simple, this love thing?

------------
After dropping Nicole off her house, Kenneth kept on driving aimlessly.  His mind was full of Nicole: the frown when she faked anger, the lovely new moon shape of her eyes when she laughed, the pride after she won the game, and the silence as she was mulling over his confession.

All of a sudden, Kenneth remembered what someone had said to him a long time ago.  “You have never suffered for love, have you?”

Now I know what it feels like, Kenneth sighed.

------------
Early morning, a long stem rose proudly sat amidst the intricate grillwork of an iron gate.  On the red, silken petals, dews glistened in the light of dawn…

After the production meeting, Nicole felt excited, and a little nervous.

Recently, there was little change in the ratings of the morning show.  In the very competitive broadcasting business, this meant a lot of room for improvement.  Thus, the producers had asked everyone involved to come up with new ideas to boost the rating.  Being the co-host of the show, Nicole naturally took it as her own mission.

She saw the blue envelop as soon as she sat down at her desk.

These past few days Kenneth seemed to have disappeared from Nicole’s life.  On the one hand, she felt relieved, as her days went by like before, quiet and uneventful.  But, strangely, she was also disappointed.  Every time when the phone rang, she wondered if it was from him.  But what would she say if it indeed was from him?  She had no idea.

She ripped the envelope open.  Inside were a note and a newspaper cutting.

The headline on the newspaper said 'Senator Zhen Seeks Reelection'.

The note said:

Dear Nicole, I mentioned Happy Morning to Senator Zhen.  She said she would be more than happy to talk to you.  Listed below are her private numbers.  Please call to arrange an interview.  Wish you the best of luck, Kenneth

Nicole examined the note.  The writing was the same, black ink, firm strokes, a little haste when he signed his name.  She held it close to her nose.  Was that the same aftershave she had smelled before?  A sense of happiness coming out of nowhere enveloped her whole being.  The world was right again.  Everything now seemed to have a purpose.

You silly girl, she chided herself.  She put down the note and studied the newspaper once more.  Then with the notes she took, she went into the research room for more materials.

------------
The private assistant of Senator Zhen was a Mr. Hwang, a youngish looking thirty something with gold rimmed glasses and a charming smile.  His easy manners, however, did not obscure the alertness and the determination to do his job well.

“Miss Jin, some of these questions…seem a little too personal.”

Mr. Hwang watched this anchorwoman from MBS closely.  When Senator Zhen mentioned this interview to him, frankly, he was quite surprised.  Her attitude toward media coverage had always been very guarded.  She would do selected interviews with hard news programs, but seldom gave face time to other ‘softer’ shows.  When he questioned her about this change of heart, she just said something vague about old family friends.  So understandably, Mr. Hwang was very curious about this cute, sweet and confident Miss Jin.

“If Senator Zhen is to be successful in her bid for reelection, she has to face some rumors and difficult questions.  Our show has the highest rating on its time slot and a very broad base of audience.  We also pride ourselves in being fair and honest, with a top notch production to match.  On our show, we will deliver Senator Zhen’s message to voters mostly directly and faithfully.”

Not just cute, a great communicator as well.  Mr. Hwang nodded his approval.

------------
Nicole’s questions were mostly directed at how the senator could balance the demands of work and family, and still found some time for herself to relax and grow.  Because Nicole’s interest was genuine, and the topics of the interview were what Senator Zhen was facing everyday, their dialogues went very smoothly and pleasantly.

“Now I am coming to the last question,” Nicole smiled at Senator Zhen.  “And it’s one that I find most intriguing.”

“Senator, what about Mr. Zhen that attracts you the most?”

Senator Zhen laughed out heartily when she heard the question.  She knew something was going on when Kenneth asked her to accept this interview.  The reason was simple.  For all the years she’d known him, that was the first time he ever mentioned a girl by name.  Obviously, as today's interview proved, this girl WAS special.

------------
After the interview was over, Mr. Hwang escorted Nicole out.

“Miss Jin, it’s such a pleasure meeting you today.  I hope we will work together again.  Do you have a car?  Or do you want me to give you a ride?  It’s no trouble at all.  I’d be more than happy to do it.”

Before Nicole could answer, she heard someone calling her name.  A black BMW glided by their sides.
Inside the car Kenneth bent over to open the door.

“Ready to go?”

Nicole thanked Mr. Hwang again, and promised that she would keep in touch.  Then she got into the car.

“Did everything go smoothly?”

“Yes, it did.  Thank you so much for arranging this for me.”

“Don’t mention it.”

Nicole glanced at him.  He was subdued today, as if there was something on his mind.

“Were Senator Zhen’s people nice?”  Kenneth spoke again.

“They were very professional and friendly.”

Silence again.

“Who was that guy?”

“What guy?”

“The guy at the front door who could not stop looking at you.”

“Oh, you meant Mr. Hwang.  He is her private assistant.”

Nicole suddenly laughed.

“What’s so funny?”

“He blinks so much.  I was counting for him when we talked.”

“Do you always meet weird people like him when you go out on assignments?”

Nicole smiled but did not answer.  Instead, she said, “I am hungry.  Do you want to have dinner with me?”

The news that Nicole scored a major exclusive for Happy Morning quickly went around MBS.  As the senate campaign was in its red hot stage, the coup could not have happened at a more opportune time.  Moreover, the feature guest, Senator Zhen, was known to be media shy and seldom gave interviews, so everyone was very curious about the program.  Quite a few producers were dancing around Nicole, hoping she would share some parts of the interview with them.

Finally it was decided that after Happy Morning aired the major portion of the interview, the 7 o’clock and 9 o’clock news would broadcast some topical segments.

Nicole voluntarily sent copies of her notes and transcripts to both Erica and Judith.  Erica looked over them quickly without saying a word.  But even at a cursory glance, she could tell Nicole had put a lot of effort into the preparation.  Those notes and reference materials were detailed, well thought out, and in perfect order.  Still looking over the notes, she finally said, “You are getting better.  Why, you finally decided to work hard for a change?”

Judith gave thanks to Nicole graciously.  Ever since she’d guessed at Kenneth’s intention, she observed Nicole closely with strange fascination, as if she had to find out what Kenneth saw in Nicole that she could not provide.  Frankly, what she saw at first was not flattering.  Nicole’s easy going manners and unabashed optimism Judith took for youthful naivety and lack of judgment.  But gradually, she began to appreciate Nicole’s kindness and sincerity, which were rare qualities in such a competitive work place.  These were made more obvious when compared to Erica’s cold and ruthless behaviors.

“Did you know Senator Zhen from before?” Judith asked Nicole, even though she knew the answer already.

“No, I did not.” Nicole replied honestly.  “In fact, this interview was arranged by Ken…by Director Yoon.”

“That’s what I thought.  You see, Senator Zhen and Kenneth are very close, and I am friends with her too.”

“Then, why didn’t you…”

“Why didn’t I go interview her myself?” Judith smiled.  “Well, it’s because in Senator Zhen’s mind, my charm is no match to Kenneth’s.  And Kenneth was willing to speak to her only on YOUR behalf.”

Nicole blushed slightly.  She did not know what to say.

“Maybe you realized it already…Kenneth attracts women even without trying.  But,” Judith looked Nicole in the eye. “He has never given out his affection lightly.  In fact, he never did.”  Judith smiled at Nicole sadly.  “Until you.”

After Judith had long gone, Nicole was still sitting there, thinking.  Of course she had heard rumors about ‘the past’ between Kenneth and Judith.  And there was no question in her mind that the elegant and beautiful Judith would make a perfect match for Kenneth.  But, from what Judith had said to her, she sensed regret and…a kind of finality in Judith’s tone.  Then, there was nothing between them now.  Nicole felt so relieved and, she was ashamed to admit, so happy.  She remembered what he had said…every single word I said is true…wasn’t it?

------------
On the TV screen, Senator Zhen was sitting across from Nicole.

“Senator, what about Mr. Zhen that attracts you the most?”

Senator Zhen laughed.  Then she thought about the question and said, in a lower voice, “What impressed me the most were his feet.  He has big feet.  And my mother always said men with big feet are trust worthy, you know, more honest and hardworking.  So…”

“So to those big feet you entrusted yourself, and it’s happily ever after.”  Nicole added for her.

The two looked at each other and laughed together.

Kenneth smiled too.  Without the need to do rating survey, he knew this program would be very popular.  He stared at Nicole’s close up.  Dear Nicole.  Sweetest, loveliest Nicole.  He thought of an old song…

And I love you so.
The people ask me how,
How I’ve lived till now.
I tell them I don’t know.

I guess they understand
How lonely life has been.
But life began again
The day you took my hand.

And, yes, I know how lonely life can be.
The shadows follow me, and the night won’t set me free.
But I don’t let the evening get me down
Now that you’re around me.

------------
“Today I feel so good about myself!” Nicole said.  She and Kenneth were sitting in a café.

“Because of the Happy Morning interview?”

“No,” Nicole reported happily.  “Because of Erica.  I finally got her approval.”

“Is it that important to get others’ approval?”

“Of course.  Especially Erica’s.”

“Miss Huh has her merits, just as you have yours.  You don’t need to mind too much about what she thinks of you.”

“Yes, I think you are right.”  Nicole said thoughtfully.  “I really don’t need to judge myself against her, do I?”

Kenneth smiled.  “Are you free this Sunday?”

“Yes.  Why did you ask?”

“It’s my mother’s birthday.  I would like to take you to visit her resting place.”

(14)

Kenneth put the lovely flowers in front of his mother’s grave.  Nicole stood behind him silently.

It was a nice day.  The sky was clear and a gentle breeze made the sunlight even more pleasant.  Faint traffic noises from far away floated in now and then.  Otherwise, the graveyard was quiet and peaceful.

“My mom waited for my father her whole life.  In the end, she was still disappointed.” Kenneth looked away.

“But, despite all that, I think she loved him till the very end.  If she knew I could not forgive him, she would be really heart broken.”

Nicole looked at Kenneth.  Standing there, he appeared utterly alone.  The handsome face registered little; the pain and sorrow were too deep to show.

She said in a soft voice.  “My father refuses to get married again, and I always thought he was too stubborn.  I was afraid he would be too lonely.  But, what did I know?” Nicole stepped closer to Kenneth.  “Maybe he is content to live with my mother’s memory.  Love is too complicated for outsiders to understand.”

Kenneth turned to Nicole and could not tear his eyes away from her face.

“I would like to do something.  I don’t know if you would agree.”

Kenneth just looked at her, transfixed.

Nicole took out a photograph wrapped carefully in a plastic sheet.

“This is my picture.  I’d like to show it to your mom.  Is it OK?”

Kenneth nodded slowly.

Nicole knelt down and put her picture by the flowers.  Dear Auntie Yoon, you lived and you loved.  You also gave this world Kenneth.  There should be no regrets, don’t you agree?

“Nicole!” All of a sudden, Kenneth was by her side.  He held out his hand, so strong and commanding, that Nicole could do nothing but accept it.  With a tug he pulled Nicole up and held her close.

With his body tightly embracing hers, he closed his eyes and whispered in her ear.  “My mom was so obsessive.  She sacrificed everything for the love of her life.  And you know what?  I am my mother’s son.  I am just like her.”

“Kenneth!” Nicole buried her head deeper in his chest.  She could hear his heart beats.

The lovers stood in the breeze for a long, long time, not letting go.

(15)

Nicole watched with unconcealed irritation as a group of TV stars and starlets tried to squeeze themselves beside Kenneth.  All around flashlights came on and off maddeningly, with photographers and reporters jostling for best positions.

The occasion was the new season premier celebration at MBS.  Nicole knew that the stars of the celebration literally would be the stars from the TV dramas and variety shows and was reluctant to participate.  But Dale insisted on sending her as a representative of the news department.  That’s why she found herself in this mad house of activity.

What she had not anticipated was how popular Kenneth was.  It seemed everyone wanted to have her picture - yes, they were all women - taken with Kenneth.  To be honest, Kenneth did not appear to be enjoying this popularity.  He looked ill at ease, but managed to behave courteously by smiling perhaps a bit mechanically for the cameras.  Nevertheless, Nicole still found the whole thing intolerable.  She cast a last glance in Kenneth’s direction and left the commotion for the exit.

“Nicole Jin!”

Nicole turned.

“Hi, Reporter Chan!”

Chan was Warren’s friend.  Nicole had worked with him before.

“Are you sneaking out?”  Chan said in a conspiratory voice.

Nicole nodded, feeling a little rebellious.  “What are you doing here?”

“I got the short end of the stick.”  He raised the camera in his hand.  “I have to take pictures for the home team.”

“Come.  Pose a good one for me.  I do have to take some to satisfy the boss.”

Nicole was just in position when she felt a hand touching her shoulder.  With no time for her to react, Chan clicked on the camera.

“Kenneth!” Nicole said.

“Director Yoon!” Chan said.

His hand still on Nicole’s shoulder, Kenneth smiled at her.  Then he turned and looked at Chan.

“Was that good?  Do you want to take some more?”

Nicole frowned.  She desperately wanted to shake off Kenneth’s hand, but dared not do anything too obvious in front of Chan.  She twitched her shoulders slightly.

Kenneth held on tighter.

“Director Yoon, I have some new ideas about my program that I would like to discuss with you.”  Nicole deftly made a quick turn, and got out of Kenneth’s hold.  “Will you please come this way?”

She said good-bye to Chan and walked briskly toward a less crowded corner.

Kenneth watched her fast moving back and smiled to himself.  But he quickly took steps to follow her.

“What are you doing?” Nicole asked with exasperation after she made sure they were alone.

“What?  I thought you wanted to discuss your ideas.”  Kenneth said innocently.

“Kenneth!”

“OK, OK.  I was just coming over to say hello.  Then I saw the reporter taking pictures…”

“Don’t you think you have been in enough pictures already?”

“Are you angry?”  Kenneth watched Nicole.  “You’d better get used to occasions like this, you know.  You will be attending more.”

“What did you mean by ‘attending more’?”

“I meant that you can no longer come and go as you please.”

Nicole sighed.  She had to admit he had a point.  She also realized there were still a lot to be learned and endured if she wanted to continue their relationship.

“Don’t frown.  You are doing fine.” Kenneth took hold of her hand affectionately.  Nicole was about to protest but Kenneth said, “Better not move, or those reporters will notice.”

He pointed at an actress.  “Look at her, the way she handles the reporters.  See, she does not want to talk to them, so she just smiles and continues walking.  She doesn’t even stop.”

Nicole observed.  She had not realized people watching could be such fun.  With Kenneth’s instructions, she took in the false grandiosity and genuine grace exhibited by those famous people.  The two of them hiding behind huge potted palms, pointing and snickering occasionally, had a wonderful time.

“Oh, look at that one!  I don’t like her.  She stood so close to you back there.”

“Her!  I almost suffocated by her perfume.”

“You deserved it.”  Nicole chuckled.

“You will have to fend off troubles like that for me.”

“Me?”

“Of course.  Didn’t you know the lady has to guard her lord?”

(16)

It’s clocking off time.  Nicole gathered her briefcase and was about to leave when the phone rang.

“Announcer Jin?”

“Speaking.”

“Hi.  This is the president’s office.  Please hold; the president wants to speak to you.”

Nicole barely had time to register this before a deep, authoritative voice came on the line.

“Miss Jin?”

“Yes.  How are you, President Yoon?”

“I’m fine.  I’ve heard from Kenneth many things about you.  I would like to meet with you and have a chat.”

“Of course, I’d be glad to.”

“I will send a car for you tomorrow.  By the way, we don’t need to let Kenneth know about this.”

“Yes.”

Nicole put down the phone slowly.   She had a bad feeling about this.

Don’t need to let Kenneth know about this.  Why couldn’t Kenneth know about this?

------------
It’s Kenneth’s stepmother who opened the door for Nicole.

“How are you, Mrs. Yoon?”

Nicole bowed respectfully.  Even though Kenneth did not say much about Mrs. Yoon, Nicole was sympathetic toward her.  No matter what’d happened in the past, now she took care of President Yoon and their son, and managed this household, which meant a lot of hard work surely.

“You must be Miss Jin.  Do come in.”  Mrs. Yoon liked Nicole’s lovely smile at first sight.  “The president is in the study.”

------------
Nicole walked into the study hardly knowing what to expect.

“Sit down, please.”  President Yoon pointed at a stuffed chair.  He was in a polo shirt and casual trousers.  The less formal attire made him looked younger and, Nicole secretly thought, less scary.

“You must be wondering why I asked to see you today.  Well, I shall be frank.”  President Yoon turned serious.  “Kenneth likes you very much, Miss Jin.  If you don’t truly care for him, or if you have other designs on him, I advise you to break off the relationship right now, before it goes too far.”

Nicole stared at him, too shocked and confused to say anything.

“Maybe you know this already,” he continued.  “The most despicable thing I’ve ever done in my life was hurting Kenneth’s mother.  I cannot let this happen to Kenneth.  I won’t allow it.”

He did not raise his voice, but Nicole could feel his regret and misery behind the calm facade.

“Please forgive me if I speak out of line, President Yoon, but I am not you and Kenneth is not his mother.  We lead our lives our own ways.  I don’t know whether he loves me or not, but my feelings for him are the most sincere.” Nicole said firmly.

“That’s good to know.  But, have you thought about the life of Kenneth’s wife?  It’s not easy to be a member of this family.”

Nicole’s face reddened.  She was not being shy; she was furious.  What he implied was clear.  He doubted Nicole had the breeding, background, education, or whatever he was looking for, to be his daughter-in-law.

“President Yoon, do you want to see my resume?” Nicole said coolly.

For the first time, President Yoon smiled.

“Kenneth is the heir to Wen Ron.  One day Miss Jin will become the first lady of Wen Ron.  All those come with tremendous pressure and obligations.  Are you ready for it?”

Nicole thought about the coaching session behind the palm trees and blushed again.  But this time there was no anger.

“I will do my best.”

President Yoon considered the young, brave woman in front of him.  Ever since Kenneth first brought up her name, he had been paying special attention to the subject.  He knew his son.  Kenneth was not the kind who would take girlfriends or love affairs lightly.  As he saw the changes in Kenneth’s demeanors, no, in Kenneth’s whole outlook on life, he was too curious not to find out what this girl was like.  He wanted to know if she could hold her own under close scrutiny.  And he should have trusted Kenneth.  His son did have excellent taste.

“May I call you Nicole?”

Just then the study door burst open and in came Kenneth, panting and looking anxious.  He found Nicole first, then turned and looked at his father.

“Kenneth!”  The two people sitting cried out at the same time.

------------
“My step mom called me.  She was afraid Father was so stern that he might scare you off.”  Kenneth and Nicole were in the Yoon’s back garden, amidst blooming flowers and a nice big tree.

“Did you think I was that fragile?”

“Hey, let’s get this straight.  I came to rescue Father.  I was concerned he could not bear you…”  Before Kenneth could finish, Nicole gave him a good one on the tummy.  Watching Kenneth’s exaggerated protests, the two people inside the house laughed too.

(To be continued)

Author’s note:

I read this recently in a book.  “The free man does what he likes in his working time and in his spare time what is required of him.  The slave does what he is obliged to do in his working time and what he likes to do only when he is not at work.”  Well, I am a slave.  And what I like to do, among other things, is to think about DG, dream about DG, and write about DG.  On this Labor Day, I salute all the slaves out there.  It is not that bad, is it?

(17)

Nicole sat in the MBS minivan and dreamt about the happy scene when Warren and she would meet again.

She was on assignments for Happy Morning.  The location was a forest conservation area, not too far from the small town Warren now called home.  She told Kenneth about that much anticipated reunion.

“I have not seen him for so long.  I wonder how he’s doing.” She looked at Kenneth. “You do remember what I told you, about him and Erica?”

“I remember it very well.”

“Auntie Kim was planning to go with me, but this trip was at such a short notice.  And she is so busy with the store…”

“Do you want me to come along?” Kenneth interrupted her.

“You?  Stop kidding around, please.  You are so important an executive.  How can the company survive without you?” Nicole smiled. “Besides, I have serious work to do.  Visiting Warren is just a by the way.”

Kenneth did not say anything but smiled resignedly.

“Are you OK?”

“I think I start to miss you already.”

As her thought came to Kenneth’s forlorn expressions, Nicole closed her eyes.  She started to miss him too.

------------
Warren took Nicole to a small but elegant restaurant.  The owner seemed to know Warren well and gave them a warm welcome.

“Are you a frequent here?”

“Pardon me, but this is the only decent restaurant in my neck of the woods.”

“Oh, poor you!” Nicole looked at him with concerns.  He was thinner, but his spirit was high, fortunately.

Warren smiled.  “You look so grown up now.  No more those crying fits, I hope.”

“Hey!  Stop treating me like a child.” Nicole protested. “I have become a famous anchor woman.”

Upon the words anchor woman, the name both had struggled to ignore appeared inevitably, like a neon signboard between them.

Nicole watched Warren, trying to gauge his reaction.  “Do you still…think about the past a lot?”

“You meant Erica?” Warren looked back at her bravely. “Not as much as before.  But, whenever I do, it still hurts.” He sighed.  “The thing is…I don’t know how to stop.”

“I know how you feel.” Nicole said softly.

“That’s enough about me.  How are you doing?”

“I believe I am more independent.  Smarter too.”  Nicole smiled.  “Before, I had you to fall back on; I didn’t need to fend for myself.”

“Nicole, I hope you won’t waste your time on me…”

“Dear bro, please don’t worry about me.  As you said, I am all grown up now.” Nicole touched his hand.  “Can we order now?  I am starving.”

------------
Kenneth sat alone in the gathering dusk.  He really detested this helpless, powerless feeling.  Nicole called after she’d checked into the hotel.  She said Warren was going to pick her up and take her out to dinner.  And she would call again once she’s back to the hotel.  Kenneth checked his watch.  He calculated the time it’d take for them to finish dinner.  If they decided to take a stroll or to go to Warren’s apartment…Kenneth closed his eyes.  He so wanted to hear Nicole’s voice.

------------
After saying good-bye to Warren at the hotel lobby, Nicole walked slowly to her room.

She didn’t quite know why she failed to mention Kenneth to Warren.  Maybe she did not want to remind him of HIS love; it’d be too cruel.  Or her relationship with Kenneth had become something very special, so special that she did not want to share it with anyone else, even Warren.

So he was right after all…Nicole thought with a bit of sadness.  She had grown up.

Someone was knocking the door.

It was the proprietor plus operator plus driver plus busboy of this tiny hotel.  He was holding a bunch of flowers in his hand.

“Miss Jin, there was a…” he checked his notebook.  “Mr. Yoon.  He ordered a bouquet of roses for you.”

“But, we ran out of roses.”  He shrugged apologetically.  “This is all we got left.”

Nicole looked at the bunch of chatty, happy daisy, trying desperately not to laugh.

“Oh, he also said to tell you this…” he checked his notebook again, and read it out loud.  “’I miss you so!’”

------------
“Kenneth, it’s me.  Did you go to bed already?”

“I miss you so much.”

Hearing that line from the hero himself, Nicole chuckled.

“Is it so funny?”

“I will tell you all about it when I get back.  And, thanks for the flowers.”

“Is…Is Warren doing well?”

“He is fine.  And so am I.  Stop worrying and try to get some sleep.”

“We can easily set up some tables and chairs here.  Put the bar over there, and voila! You have an outdoor café.” the ever acute Director Yoon commented.

Nicole took in the wide open space of the rooftop.
“Then we will have one fewer place where we can meet.”

“That’s right!  Stupid me!  What was I thinking?”
After Nicole told him everything about the trip, Kenneth was in a great mood.

“What’s your plan for later?”

“Judith got me a voice and speech coach.  I will go learn how to talk.”

“Hmm.  You do need to know how to talk.”

Nicole gave him a look.  “How about you?”

“I have to continue the budget meeting for the next season.”

“Kenneth,” Nicole said hesitantly, “Things like budget, investment, asset ratio, and so on, they mean nothing to me and I don’t have any interest for them.  Do you think I am too stupid?  Would you be disappointed?”

Kenneth laughed.  “Why do you think we hired all those accountants and financial advisers for the company?  To anchor the news programs?”  He touched and smoothed her hair almost without thinking.  “You are my Nicole and there’s only one of you in the whole wide world.”

Nicole looked at him.

“Do you know?”  Kenneth said sincerely.  “You give me hope.”

As they walked down the stairs, Kenneth thought about something.

“Announcer Jin, you do know what TV rating is, right?”

For this, he earned another one of those priceless looks.

------------
Only Qing-Xi was in the office when Nicole got back.

“Oh, Senior, how are you?”

“I am fine.”

Qing-Xi smiled at Nicole and was about to say something.  But then she changed her mind.

It was only after Nicole sat down at her desk that she knew what Qing-Xi was going to say.

On her desk there was a copy of the company newsletter, MBS Today.  Some over-friendly persons had helpfully turned the pages to the relevant section.  The title was ‘MBS welcomes the new season: live from the celebration ceremony.’  The photogenic Kenneth was featured prominently in many of the pictures that went with the story, where he was either talking to other managerial heavy weights or was surrounded, a bit uneasily, by those famous stars.

Only one picture, where two people stood so close to each other, with the arm of Director Yoon resting comfortably on Announcer Nicole’s shoulders, showed his brilliant and gorgeous smile.

(19)

“Nicole, can you slow down a bit? I…” Kenneth stopped. “Oh, that picture! I think you looked great in it.” He stopped again, the smile widened on his face.

“OK, stop worrying.  I will pick you up.  Same time, same place.”

Having hung up the phone, Kenneth picked up the thing that so irritated Nicole, the latest issue of MBS Today.  He turned to the pages about the new season celebration, and examined the offending picture once again.  It WAS a good picture.  Maybe, he was thinking, from the photographer, the editor, to the typesetter, everyone should be given a reward.

------------
“Why should we be looking at houses now?”

“You know my apartment is a rental; sooner or later I’ll have to buy.  And the real estate market is starting to get hot.  If we don’t look now, it’d be very difficult to find one we really like.”

Nicole was still not convinced.  Actually, she did not know what to think.  She loved Kenneth and wanted to spend every second of her free time with him.  But, when they were together, she could not help but feel the huge difference existed between them.  Like now.  Buying a house?  That’s something that had never crossed her mind until he mentioned it.  A thing of such significance, both financially and psychologically, that she did not believe she was qualified to contemplate, Kenneth just handled it as a daily routine.  And the strange thing was that the more at ease and in control he appeared to be, the more doubtful and anxious she felt.

“You don’t need to worry.  We are just looking; we don’t have to make any decision today.”  He smiled at her reassuringly.

Ever since he had met Nicole, Kenneth felt this urgency to involve her in every aspect of his life.  He wished he had known her earlier.  He cringed at the thought of all those years wasted away when he was lonely, bitter, and loveless.   Now he could not imagine a life without her.

------------
He took out the keys to open the door.  “This floor is mine.  See if you like it.”

Mine.  Nicole repeated the word to herself silently.  She walked into a bright and airy living room, taking in the immaculate wood floor and the huge glass wall with the fantastic views.  All these were his.

“Very nice.  Beautiful.”  She said without much enthusiasm.

“Dad bought it for me a long time ago.  It’s been sitting empty.  Come look at the dining room.”

“Kenneth…Sorry, I do not feel too well.”

“What’s the matter?  Do you need to sit down?”

“No, no.  I think I am just tired…”

Kenneth walked over and held her hand.  “Let’s go.  I’ll take you home.”

------------
Before they reached Nicole’s house, Kenneth turned into a side road.  It was a quiet residential neighborhood.  The houses were not huge, but well looked after.  Through an open window somewhere, faint piano music drifted out.  After he switched off the engine, Kenneth just sat there, staring straight ahead.

Nicole looked at him quizzically.

“Did you see the house in front?  That was my home.  Nobody lives there since Mom passed away.” He pointed it out for her.  “And my room is over there.  See where that window is?  I loved to look out from that window.  You had a good view of the road from there.  When Dad came home, soon as his car made the turn, I could spot it.”  He smiled a little uncertainly.  “Because we passed it today, so I thought…”

“Can you take me inside to have a look?” Nicole asked.

“You want to see it?”

“Yes.  I want to check out if there’s any graffiti made by a naughty boy.”

“I am afraid I was not that talented.  Maybe you’ll find some dirty socks.”

------------
Kenneth led Nicole to every room of the house.  He himself had not been inside for a long time.  Seeing from Nicole’s fresh eyes, the house that held so much sad memories for him did not look nearly as dreary.  It seemed that with the people gone, shadows and echoes of old misery disappeared as well.  The house stood peacefully and contentedly.

He told her his childhood mischieves.  Nicole could not stop laughing.

“Oh, and that’s my cave.” He pointed at a low cabinet with a door.

“Your cave?”

“My secret hideout.  Whenever I was feeling down, I’d sneak in there, covered my head with my blankie, and pretended I was practicing some kung fu moves.”

“Ha, I thought I was the only one who had a blankie!  So you had one too.”

“How dare you make fun of me, Miss Jin!”

Kenneth got hold of her and hugged her tightly.  Nicole was still giggling in his embrace.  At that moment, the world seemed to be filled with laughter.

At the monthly news department meeting, required attendants consisted of the announcers and producers of all kinds of news programs.  Group leaders took turns chairing the meeting, and only rarely would the news program manager make a showing.

So today when Director Yoon walked into the meeting room, everyone was taken by surprise.

Then, as nonchalantly as possible, with various degrees of success, all eyes went looking for Nicole.  Once her location had been logged, they quickly turned to watch the director.

“How is everyone?  I hope you don’t mind me sitting in at this meeting.  I just want to know more about the news operation.  So please continue.”  Kenneth said easily.

Nicole lowered her head to study her notes.

The meeting went on.  Nicole reported the feedback from her audience and the themes for next month’s Happy Morning.  She avoided looking in his direction, but still felt the heat from his attention.

Her colleagues were having the time of their lives.  Like spectators in a tennis match, their heads turned from Nicole to Kenneth, then back from Kenneth to Nicole.  In the whole of the meeting, no one dozed off.

After what seemed like an eternity, the meeting finally came to a close.  Nicole hurriedly stepped behind Chen-Shum, trying to make a quiet and quick exit.

“Announcer Jin!”

Nicole closed her eyes.

Kenneth was beside her already.

All the people in the meeting room picked up their ears.

“It was such an honor to be photographed alongside you that day.  You know I am your most faithful supporter.”  Kenneth took out the infamous MBS Today.  “May I have your autograph?  It’d mean so much to me.”

Nicole looked at Kenneth as if he had just asked her to run a marathon with high heels.  She took the pen he had offered her.

“For the title just write ‘To Kenneth’.”  Kenneth added helpfully.

Nicole swore he would pay for this.

(21)

“Nicole, you are not going home yet?” Chen-Shum gathered his briefcase and stood up.  In his class, he liked Nicole the best.  Were it not for Cho-Jeh, who had in effect laid claim on him, he would have…

“I still have some stuff I need to do.  You go ahead.”

Chen-Shum took a few steps.  Looking around to make sure no one else was in the office, he said in a conspiratory voice to Nicole.  “That Director Yoon…He has not been bothering you, has he?”

“Director?” Nicole strained to control her voice.

“People like him just flock to the young and beautiful.  They will chase one, drop her, and then go after the next one.”  Chen-Shum said authoritatively, as if he had a lot of experience of the girl chasing set.  “I was really worried about you.”

Nicole told herself to remain calm.

“Thank goodness, it looks as if the worst is over.”  He patted Nicole’s shoulder.  “But you still need to be careful.  OK?   I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Nicole pushed away the report she had been reading.  All she could think of was what Chen-Shum had said.

So, the colleagues were not blind to what was going on between her and Kenneth.  The young and beautiful!  Nicole did not know whether to take it as a complement or an insult.  About how about Kenneth?  Simply because he was rich and famous, people lumped him conveniently with the playboy group.  They do not know him, let alone understand him, Nicole thought angrily.  All of a sudden, she wanted to shout to the world that Kenneth was not what they thought.

But, there really was no need for it now, was it?  Obviously, ‘the worst is over.’

Again, she was not sure to be happy or sad as the cover-up was so successful.

The phone rang.

“Excuse me.  Is Announcer Jin there?”

“She’s speaking.”  Even though she recognized Kenneth’s voice, out of habit, Nicole still replied automatically.

“Is Announcer Jin free to talk?  Is anyone else around?”

Nicole smiled at the deliberate care in his words.

“You don’t have to pretend.  It’s only me here.”

“So, you are not mad at me anymore?”  Kenneth worried that Nicole was still upset about the photograph.

“Hey, not so fast.  To punish you, Daddy wants to have a face-to-face.”

In fact her father had asked her repeatedly to bring Kenneth home; it was she who was hesitating.  Later when Mr. Jin found out that Nicole had been to Kenneth’s parents’, he was more insistent about meeting Kenneth.

“He will be home this weekend and wants to have dinner with you.”

Kenneth was still silent.  Nicole thought with some satisfaction that for once he was nervous.  She had read about it somewhere, that men were very apprehensive about going to girlfriend’s house or meeting her parents.  It was something about commitment, fear of rejection, and male ego over territory.  On the sideline, she would watch all those unfolded.  She smiled.

But Kenneth still had said nothing.  Was he that worried?  Nicole felt a pang of sympathy.

“You don’t have to worry too much.  My dad is a very nice guy.”

“Huh?  Oh, I was thinking about the menu.”

“The menu?”

“Of course.  That will be our first meeting and I plan to cook up something really nice to impress him.”

“Did you know how to cook?”  Nicole was surprised.

“Of course.  I learned it when I was in the UK.  I am a rather good cook, if I may say so myself.”

Nicole laughed.

“My apologies, Chef Yoon!  But you don’t need to outdo yourself you know.  Daddy is an easy customer, since he feasts on MY cooking.”

The important day finally arrived.  Just to unload, Kenneth made several round trips between the car and the house.  Nicole was speechless when she saw those bottles, jars, and bags of substances of various textures and a myriad of colors.

“Do you need all these ingredients?”

“Oh, I almost forgot.”  He made yet another trip to the car and brought back a cookbook.  Nicole read out the title, ‘Cooking for One: the Bachelor's Survival Guide.’  She looked at Kenneth.

“Don’t worry.  I'd multiply the ingredients.”

So, based on the time table Kenneth devised, the two got busy in the kitchen.

It took no time for Nicole to find out that Kenneth’s way of masterful cooking was, well, a little bit rusty.  He did things strictly out of needs, not because of any aesthetic or creative considerations.  Like cutting the carrots.  He used the knife surely but slowly, not trying to show off his skills but concentrating on making the carrot sticks uniform in size.  As the counter was rather low for someone his height, he bent over to labor on his creations.

“Kenneth, thank you.”  Nicole said sincerely.

Kenneth looked up and smiled.

“Did you know what my father said to me?”

“No, I did not.  What did he say?”

“He said I have to take good care of you, make you eat more, because you are too skinny.”

“Really?  He said I am too skinny?”

“Of course not!  I added the last part.”  He laughed.  “Hey, watch out; I am cutting stuff here.  Please don’t hit me.”

------------
With great efforts from both, they managed to load the dinner table with wonderful dishes.  Fish and chip, braised red cabbage, and curry chicken from a ‘secret family recipe’ were Kenneth’s contribution.  Nicole made barbecue beef, stir-fried cellophane noodle, kim chi, and various pickled vegetables.  Looking at the bountiful offering, Kenneth sighed with satisfaction.

“It is like we are hosting our first banquet as a couple.”

“Kenneth, please watch your mouth!”  Nicole looked at him sternly.  “Don’t make any joke in front of Father, OK?”

“Yes, ma’am.  Actually I am so nervous now I cannot breathe.”

------------
In front of Nicole’s father, Gui-Chen, Kenneth was a perfect gentleman.  He toasted to him, fetched food for him, listened with great interest, and could not be more agreeable.  At first Nicole was vastly amused by this amiable and solicitous Kenneth, until she realized, to her embarrassment, somehow she became the topic of their conversation.

“Nicole cried all the times when she was a child.  Ah, it’s hard for a man to bring up a baby.”

“Certainly.  Uncle Jin, you have worked so hard and done such a great job!”

“Dad, I think you’ve had enough drinks.”

“And she is so bossy!  I think it’s high time to find her a husband.  What do you think, Kenneth?”

Kenneth’s grin could not be broader.  But one look at Nicole, he dared not respond.

“You both had enough.  I am taking away the wine.”  Nicole got up to collect the cups.

“OK, my darling daughter.  We all do what you order, right?” Gui-Chen winked at Kenneth.

While Nicole was in the kitchen cleaning up, Gui-Chen pulled Kenneth aside.

“Nicole did cry a lot, and still does, but no matter how miserable, she never complains.  I travel a lot so I cannot comfort her when she needs me.  I feel so sorry...”  Gui-Chen did not finish.

Kenneth thought about the competitions and gossips from work she must endure, the brilliant smiles, and the tears for total strangers, simply because she felt for them…

“Uncle Jin, I promise I will take good care of her.  I will make her happy.”  Kenneth said solemnly.

The two men looked at each other, as a promise and an understanding passed between them.

------------
“I really don’t understand why you two had to drink so much.”  Nicole looked at Kenneth with irritation and concerns.  “You certainly cannot drive now.  Father wants you to stay for the night.”

She handed him Gui-Chen’s pajamas.  Then seeing how exhausted he was, she softened her voice.

“It’s been a long day.  Try to get some sleep, OK?  Good night.”

She smiled at him and turned to leave.  But he grabbed her hand.  “Nicole!”

(23)

“Sit with me for a moment, will you?” Kenneth took Nicole’s hand and gently pulled her down, to sit on the edge of her bed.  He just looked at her, an indecipherable expression on his face.  Like a paint brush caressing a beloved canvas, his eyes slowly went over her every feature, from her brows, eyes, nose, to her mouth.  Delicately, deliberately they went, without missing any detail.

Under his gaze, Nicole could not move, as if in a trance.

“What are you looking at?” She finally murmured.

“I am looking at you.”

She did not know why this straightforward answer would make her blush, and happy beyond words.  But it did.  She wanted to sit much closer, to hear his heart beats and sniff that irresistible smell of his.  But, she was also content to be just like this, two of them sitting quietly together, letting their eyes and hearts roam free.

At long last, she broke the reverie by retrieving her hand.  She smiled at him and said, “It’s getting late.  I’d better go.  Good night.”

Reluctantly, Kenneth watched her walk out of the room.

------------
It’s almost two in the morning, but Kenneth could not get any sleep.  The room reminded him so much of Nicole; from the pillow under his head to the small mirror by the bedside table, her scents and touches were everywhere.  He could not stop thinking about her, even with his eyes shut.  Finally, he gave up the struggle and got off the bed.

He switched on the lights and walked over to examine her bookshelves.  Other than the usual journalism and broadcasting books her collections were mostly novels and essays.  Kenneth picked up a well thumbed volume of prose and curiously leafed through the pages.  She liked to doodle.  With a line under a favorite sentence or a comment on the contrary, the pages seemed to come to life and in his mind he could see Nicole frowning or nodding while she read.  He smiled.

Just as he was putting the book back to the shelf, something from the book fell to the ground.  He bent down to pick it up.  They were pressed rose petals.  Carefully, he put them on his palm.  Though dried and wrinkled, the proud red was still there, more beautiful now that it acquired an ageless look.  He put the petals to his nose.  The sweet aroma was surprisingly strong and soon filled his nostrils.

He returned the petals to the pages.  Before he could put the book back, he heard someone calling his name.

------------
Nicole tossed and turned on the unfamiliar bed, listening to her father’s snoring.  She looked at the clock and decided to get a drink of water from the kitchen.

She left the room as quietly as she could manage.  Before she got to the kitchen she saw the light coming out from her own bedroom.

She walked slowly toward it.  When she was at the door, she stopped and strained to listen.  She thought she heard something.

Did he have problems falling asleep as well?  Was he thirsty?

“Kenneth!” she whispered.

The door opened slowly.  Kenneth stood before her, his tall frame backlit by the room lights.

She did not quite remember what happened next.  She probably asked him if he wanted a drink.  He seemed not to answer.  Instead, he put his arms around her shoulders and by some miraculous maneuvers Nicole found herself inside the room.

Her back against the wall, her head slightly tilting, she gazed at him.  He was so close.  His hands were still on her shoulders.  She could hear his short, urgent breath.

Maybe he called her name.  Then, he leaned over.  Nicole closed her eyes.

The moment his lips touched hers, a red flash went off in Nicole’s mind.  All the blood in her body seemed to rush into her head.  His lips were incredibly soft, so gentle that she had to come forward, for fear that they might shy away.  She felt everything else retreating into a black void, only his lips and hers, lingering, savoring, unwilling to end.

She did not know how long they kissed; maybe it’s just a few seconds, or it could be till the end of the world.  When he finally let her go, she was a little unsteady.  Kenneth looked at her, his eyes glistening, that enigmatic smile almost showing.

“Nicole, I love you.”

For reasons beyond reasoning, she wondered out aloud.  “But why? Why do you love me?”

Only when she asked the question did she realize she really wanted to know the answer.

Kenneth grinned.  He pulled her closer, and before he kissed her again, she heard him say, “I don’t know, my love.  I just do.”

------------
At the breakfast table, Gui-Chen found the two young ones strangely subdued.

“Kenneth, did you have a good night’s sleep?”

“Yes, Uncle Jin.  I slept well.  Thank you for asking.”

Nicole blushed.  She stole a glance at Kenneth and found him smiling at her.

Gui-Chen watched the two eyeing each other, not quite sure what’s a father to do in a situation like this.

The excruciatingly long meeting to discuss the free lance anchors had finally come to a close.  After some parting words to his secretary, Kenneth picked up his cell phone eagerly.

“It’s me.  Can we go now?”

Her laughter trickled into his ears like big rain drops on a parched land.

“Hey, I thought I was doing the waiting here.  I am starving!”

“So sorry, my dear.  Later you can eat the whole menu.”

------------
“It’s kind of rare to find a girl with such good appetite.”  Kenneth watched Nicole finished her fish.

“Is it?  I should think not.  Those girls who eat like a bird are probably on a diet or just pretending.”

She paused, and then said, “How many girls have you eaten out with?”

“You are the only one I ENJOY eating with.”  Kenneth ruffled her hair.  “Today I did have a business lunch though.  With JPC’s Announcer Lee.”

“Oh, were you talking about a free lance deal for her?”

“Yes, and she is interested.”

“Of course she is.  If someone is willing to pay that much for me, I would be interested too.”  Nicole wiped her mouth with satisfaction.  “But the problem lies in the future.”

“In the future?”

“Sure.  Think about it.  If someone else pays me more, doesn’t it mean I have to jump yet again?”

Kenneth looked at her thoughtfully.  “Miss Jin, you claimed you did not understand business dealings.  But I found you actually are quite good at it.”

“Thank you for your high praises.  It’s nothing.  I am just telling you what ordinary people would do.”

Nicole looked at him.  “But, I am curious about one thing.”

“What thing?”

“Do you think SHE was on a diet, or just pretending?”

------------
In front of her house, Kenneth would not let Nicole go.

“Since Uncle is not home, why can’t I just stay for a while?”

“No!  I have to get up early tomorrow.”  Nicole saw his petulant expression and laughed.  “Sometimes you behave like a kid.”

She waved at him and turned toward the gate.  Then she stopped, walked back, and planted a kiss on his cheek.

“Good night!”

Kenneth was just standing there.  The air was still full of her.  He took a deep breath and watched as the front door to the house opened and closed.  He turned and walked slowly back to the car.  It’s going to be a long night.  Luckily, there would always be tomorrow.

(To be continued)

Author’s note:  I enjoyed writing these two chapters.  And if you’ve reached this point you should know why.  Writing kissing scenes with DG in mind is very therapeutic.  I recommend it to anyone who is feeling stressed or unloved.  It will set you right in no time.

Until the next installment…

Love, AnnMichelle

(25)

Among the glamorous people dressed to the ninth, Nicole gave a heartfelt thank-you to Kenneth.

“Just pick one that’s the most expensive AND the simplest,” he had said.

------------
When he mentioned going together to his cousin’s engagement party, the very first thought that came into her mind was to refuse.  Even now, while having no qualms telling Kenneth her innermost secrets, she still felt a little alienated from the world he inhabited.  She could not help it.  An innate aversion to anything rich and famous, Nicole liked to say, not entirely jokingly.  But, Kenneth’s obvious desires and anticipation gave her pause.  His pleading gaze seemed to implore her to take a chance, to give it a try.  All right, maybe it was time for her to find out if those people were indeed immortals blessed with magic powers, she decided.

Then came the question of what to wear.  Kenneth’s suggestion reminded her of the Armani suit, the only good suit she owned.  She splurged on that with her first paycheck (and a little help from Father).  She adored the lovely cut and elegant drape.  But, other than admiring herself in front of a mirror once in a while, she never had any occasion important enough to wear the suit.  For Kenneth, and his rich, critical relatives, the occasion might be at hand.

Excitedly, she described the plain but feminine style and the exquisite taupe color.

“Wonderful!” Kenneth said, taking an oblong, velvet case from his bag and handing it to her.

“It’s my mother’s favorite.”

Nicole carefully opened the case.  Inside was a strand of pearl necklace.  The pearls were uniform in size and shone with subtle, full-bodied sheen.  Even to her inexperienced eyes, it was obvious that the necklace was of the finest quality.  His mother’s favorite.  It must have been a treasured possession.

She looked up at Kenneth.

“It’s only a loan to you,” Kenneth said quickly.  “When we have our daughter, you can give it back to her.”

------------
Nicole touched the beautiful strand around her neck and smiled.

“At least you are still smiling.”  With two drinks on his hands, Kenneth emerged, seemingly from nowhere.

“What are you talking about?  This is fine, really.  The people are gorgeous; some are even nice.”

“Are they?”  Kenneth looked around at the guests greeting each other and making small talks.  No matter how polished and put together they looked, he felt there was a little too much effort involved.  It was as if they knew they looked good, and that self congratulatory acknowledgement simply took any grace out of them.  Unlike Nicole.  She was utterly natural.  The fact that she was so unaware of her own loveliness just made her more attractive.

Pride swelled inside him like steam rising up from a geyser.  He took hold of her hand and said, “Let’s find my uncle and pay our respect.”

“Hello, Uncle.  This is my good friend, Miss Nicole Jin.”  Kenneth bowed to a severe-looking man.  Then he turned toward Nicole.

“My uncle, president of You-Rong Enterprise.”

President Chou looked at Nicole.

“So, you are the announcer that helped Senator Zhen win her re-election.”

Nicole was a little taken aback by this unexpected statement.  Fortunately she quickly remembered the interview and connected the dots.

“Thank you so much for the high praises.  But I do not deserve them.  Senator Zhen won the election completely on her own merits.”

President Chou nodded his head slightly and said to Kenneth, “Help me take good care of Miss Jin.  We will talk later.”

After President Chou was gone, Kenneth grinned at Nicole.  “Uncle likes you.”

“Oh?  How do you know?”

“Only the people he likes he would mention by name.”

Nicole made a face.  “Wow!  Are your relatives all like him?  I should have reviewed this week’s headlines before coming here.”

“Naughty!”  Kenneth patted her head.  “Now there is my aunt.  Come.”

Incidentally, Auntie Chou and her female companions had no interest whatsoever in the news or world events.  After making the introductions, Kenneth quickly excused himself and left Nicole to the task of trying to figure out what the women were so exited about.

“Fortunately, it was AFTER I got in that they shut the doors.  Or I’d have missed the greatest sale!”

A department store in Seoul? Nicole guessed.  No, it’s the Chanel flagship in Paris.

Then there’s this girl named Pauline, who seemed to be very lucky indeed.  Her diamond engagement ring alone weighed in at a hefty two carats.  Plus she got it at a huge discount through some contacts in South Africa.  But there were some nasty rumors about her fiancé…

Just as Nicole was starting to enjoy the gossip, someone touched her hand from behind.

It was Kenneth.

“Let’s go.”  He whispered into her ear.

After they walked away from the group, Kenneth said, “Boring, isn’t it?”

“Not at all.  I found the conversations most educational.”

“That’s why I had to pull you away, or you would be corrupted rotten.”

Finally it’s time to feast.  To Kenneth’s left sat a distant cousin, who tried her hardest to impress upon him.  But after the nos, thanks, and some more nos, she finally gave up and started to work on the gentleman on the other side.  When the happy couple came to their table for a toast, Kenneth nodded toward the groom-to-be and whispered to Nicole.  “When we were kids, I got into a fight with him and knocked off one of his front teeth.”  Nicole giggled and then tried to suppress it, quite unsuccessfully.

On the way home, they reviewed what had happened that evening and agreed that it’s best to avoid that kind of functions as much as possible.

“If we HAVE to go, we’d better design some secret signs or something.”  Nicole said.

“Secret signs?”

“You know, like patting your head or winking your eye, means please come rescue me, that kind of signals.”

“Don’t you think it’s a little weird?  To be all dressed up and, all of a sudden, starting to pat your own head?”

Nicole laughed.  “Yes, that is weird.  I think we shall stick to the winking.”

Kenneth smiled and winked at her.

“Remember to check all the windows and doors before going to bed.  And do not answer the door to any stranger!”

“Yes, sir.”

“You have my hotel phone number, right?  If you cannot reach me by my cell, call the hotel.  Make sure to leave a message if I am out.”

“Oh, dear, you are really meticulous, aren’t you?  You are going to Japan for two days, not to the South Pole, you know.”

At the other end of the line, Kenneth imagined Nicole’s pursed lips and the beautiful smile at the ready.  Ah, if only you know how much I love you…

------------
The morning’s taping finished, Nicole sat in the office staring into the space and doing nothing.

MBS without Kenneth felt so empty.

Before, she liked to daydream that Kenneth in his upstairs office could somehow see through the concrete floors and watched her every move, whether she’s writing scripts, reading reports, or hosting shows.  No matter she was alone or with lots of other people, Kenneth’s gentle and loving gaze seemed to be following her, enveloping her, like her own sun.

And now?  With Kenneth away, the building went back to what it actually was, cold hard floors and unfeeling furniture and people.  Nicole felt very lonely.

The ringing of the phone startled her.

“Announcer Jin?  Hi, I am Khoo from JPC.  Remember me?  We met in the last broadcasting conference.”

“Oh, Mr. Khoo, of course I remember you.  How are you?  What can I do for you?”

“I have something I’d like to discuss with you.  How about lunch today?”

They settled the time and place and Nicole hanged up.

What was it that he wanted to discuss?

After lunch, Nicole was confused and agitated.  She took out her cell phone and tried Kenneth’s number.  It did not go through.  Then she realized she had left his hotel number back in the office.  Frustrated, she tried his cell phone again.  He picked it up this time.

“Kenneth?”

“Oh, Nicole.  I am in a meeting right now.  Can I call you back later?”

“Hmm, sure.”

“You’re OK?”

“Yes, I’m fine.  I will talk to you later.”

Reluctantly she cut the connection.

Maybe that was how it should be.  After all, it’s her own affair, isn’t it?  She had to think carefully and decided what was the best for her.

Maybe, it was time to leave MBS.

After a solid day’s work, Kenneth’s Japanese colleagues arranged a dinner party in his honor at a famous seafood restaurant.  But Kenneth did not want to go.  He just wanted to go back to the hotel and call Nicole, making sure she was alright.  So he made up some excuses to skip the engagement.  His colleagues winked at each other knowingly and, after some lame jokes about being careful with the local girls, let him be.

As soon as he entered the hotel room, he saw the red message light blinking on the phone.  He smiled.  She must have called, just as he had asked her to.  He quickly dialed the mail box system.  Within seconds, her lovely voice was in his ear.

“Hi, Kenneth.  It’s me.  Nothing really, I just wanted to say hello.  You are doing fine, right?  Don’t drink too much when you go out with the guys.  Hmm…” she hesitated. “There was this guy and we went out to lunch today.  He mentioned a project about a new show that sounds quite exciting.  He asked me if I would be interested to take parts in.  Well, I am not sure.  You know I’ve been with Happy Morning for some time now.  Maybe…”

Then it stopped; Nicole’s message was cut short.

She did not call again.

Kenneth rewound and heard the message all over as his mind was racing to make sense of what she had said.

He was sure the guy she mentioned was from some other station and intended to lure her away from MBS.  If he was just anther MBS producer, Nicole would have called him by name.  If the guy was from another station, then it must be JPC, MBS’ chief rival.  The competition between the two stations was fierce and each had tried to recruit the other’s top talents.

Kenneth frowned and thought hard about any recent news on JPC’s new programs.

She mentioned Happy Morning, so the ‘exciting’ new show probably was not another morning show.  What could it be then?

He looked at his watch.  He still had time.  Quickly he switched on the laptop and dialed Dale’s number.

------------
Before Nicole could finish what she wanted to say to Kenneth, the hotel’s message system abruptly cut her off.  She put down the phone dejectedly.  She was in no mood to talk to the machine again.  Maybe later, she thought.

She could not help but wonder what it would be like to be a talk show host.  She imagined herself interviewing all sorts of fascinating characters, interacting with the audience, finding topics that were relevant and interesting to her.  In fact, the more she thought about it, the more exciting the idea seemed.  She felt stimulated, even inspired, and could not wait to tell Kenneth.

Thinking about Kenneth, she shook her head and laughed at herself.  He was away for barely a day and she missed him terribly already.  How could she contemplate a workplace without Kenneth’s reassuring presence?

But, it was not totally without merits if she did leave MBS.  For starters, she would not need to worry about the troublesome gossips anymore.  Besides, shouldn’t she learn to be more independent?  But, if she joined JPC, it would also mean working against MBS, against Kenneth…

Ah, why were things so complicated?  Why did she have to fall in love with Kenneth?

------------
“JPC’s new programs…Did you mean their TV dramas?” asked Dale.

“No.  I meant something more like a news magazine.”

“Now that you mentioned it, I remember someone said they’re going to change the hosts of the morning show, and add some new segments.  Oh, yes, there were also rumors about a new talk show.”

Talk show!  Kenneth almost slapped himself.  That’s it.  Why didn’t he think about it himself?  Survey after survey, Nicole always scored very high on the likeability part.  She would be the ideal host of a talk show.

He thanked Dale and then hanged up the phone, still annoyed at himself.  This was unforgivable.  To think that he used to pride himself in knowing the people at MBS and make the best use of their talents!  Then why such a perfect match of talent and show he needed a competitor to tell him?  Especially this talent was his lovely Nicole?

Was it because this talent WAS his Nicole?

Did he fall so hard for her that in the attempt to get her to know and love him, he was oblivious to anything else?  Including her interest, her career?

He thought back on her message.  Although she did not say in so many words, her enthusiasm for the talk show was apparent.

Nicole wanted to grab at this new opportunity.

But, if she left MBS…

Kenneth could not bear to think about it.

------------
“Did you have dinner yet?”

“Yes.”

“What did you eat?”

“Champaign and caviar.  Are you satisfied, old nanny?”

“Very cute,” he said.  “Oh, and the message you left, what was that about?”

“You know, it’s Mr. Hu, remember him?  He asked me out to lunch and then he said he wanted to work with me.”

“Mr. Hu…Is he the one who went to the conference with you and you thought he was funny?” Kenneth wrote down Hu’s name on his notebook, underlining it twice with unnecessary force.

“Yes, that’s him.  He asked if I was interested to host their new talk show.”

“Then, what did you say?”

“Of course I said I needed time to consider.  Why, you think I would just sign away my life right there and then?”

Nicole was trying to make light of the matter but Kenneth was not in a joking mood.

“You sounded very interested.”

Nicole’s voice turned serious now.  “Later I thought about it some more.  And, yes, I like the directness of a talk show.  To be able to get close to the audience and interact with them, I think I like that.  It also fits with my personality, don’t you think?”
She waited for him to reply, but when that was not forthcoming she said again, carefully. “Are you upset?”

“Upset?  No, actually I am angry, angry at myself.”

“What are you talking about?  Have you been drinking?”

“Well, never mind.  We still have time.  Don’t worry too much about this.  We will discuss it and try to come up with something when I get back, OK?”

“Kenneth?”

“Yes?”

“Do you…do you miss me?”

“Oh, Nicole, you have no idea!” Kenneth said with utmost sincerety.

------------
Hand still on the phone, Nicole reflected Kenneth’s last few sentences.  We still have time.  We will discuss it and try to come up with something.  The way he so effortlessly laid claims to her affairs should have offended her, or at least disturbed her.  But all she felt now was a deep sense of belonging, full of warmth and comfort, like going home and knowing someone was waiting for you.

Everyone working on top priority mode, MBS Programming finished the production package for a new talk show in record time.  In fact, the idea of such a show had always been there.  It’s just that the appropriate time slot and adequate budget were difficult to come by.  Now with the full support of Director Yoon, everything finally fell into its place.

When asked about potential host candidates, Mr. Soong, the program manager in charge of the show, said, “Our first pick would be Announcer Jin.”

Hearing that, Kenneth let out a long breath.

Mr. Soong looked at Kenneth anxiously.  “I know she is young and still quite inexperienced.  But she is really popular among a broad base of audience.  She is also quick and responds well to live broadcast.  We all feel that she should be the host.”

“I have no problem with your recommendations.  But, Announcer Jin has Happy Morning already.  If she is doing this one as well…”

“We plan to put this show on three times a week, late afternoon slot.  That way, there should be no concerns about over-exposure.”

More importantly, it would not be too much a burden on Nicole, thought Kenneth.

“All right.  Let’s do it.  When do you plan to talk to her?”

“I want to ask her tomorrow.”

Kenneth nodded his head thoughtfully.  That meant he had to approach her about it tonight.  He had better come up with some very good script.

------------
“What is it that you want to discuss with me?” Nicole took a sip of her coffee.

“Be honest with me, Nicole.  You really want to take that talk show, don’t you?”

Nicole put down her cup and, after a few moments of hesitation, said, “I do.  But…”

“But I cannot let you leave MBS.”  Kenneth said quickly.  “Tomorrow, Mr. Soong will talk to you about a new program.  I am sure you will like it.”

“A new program…” Nicole said slowly.  “It wouldn’t be a talk show, would it?”

“As a matter of fact, it is.  The planning has been going on for quite some time.  It’s just that now…”

“Did you ask them to fast track it?”

Kenneth felt his heart sinking.  This was not going well at all.  He could see Nicole was staring at him.  He could also feel the distrust and disbelief coming out of her.  But he was stuck.  He could do nothing but forge on.

“Nicole, I swear I did not mention your name.  They nominated you.”

“But, if it’s not for your push, this program might never get off the planning table.”

“It is not like that.  Before I got involved, they were talking about best slots for it already.  I just helped clear the way a bit.”  He leaned forward and held her hands tightly.  “Because I don’t want you to go.  I want you to stay at my side.”

Nicole was still eyeing him coldly.

“You said you did not mention my name.  Then, why did they want me?”

“Mr. Soong said something about you being the most popular in a survey they conducted.  He was really pushing hard for you, because he thought I had concerns about your experience.”  He raised his hand.  “If you don’t trust me, you can ask him tomorrow.”

Like a pupil in front of his stern teacher, Kenneth watched Nicole’s reaction nervously.

“Director Yoon, were you implying I do not have enough experience?” Her expression was still serious, but there was the first hint of thawing in her voice.

“Nicole, I am the one who doesn’t have enough experience.  Right in front of me sits this excellent talk show host and I failed to see it.”  Kenneth looked at her.  “Could you forgive me?”

“Well, if you tell me everything you know about the survey, I will consider it.”

------------
“So you really don’t want me to leave MBS?”

”I cannot stand not seeing you all the time.”

“Actually,” Nicole lowered her head and said in a low voice, “I cannot stand not being with you either.”

Kenneth took her hand to his lips and kissed it gently.

Nicole let him hold her hand.  A comfortable silence settled in as the two contemplated the significance of what had just happened.  It was a new feeling, this ‘come hell or high water, we will do it together’ thing.  But it felt so right, so natural, that neither had any intention to resist.

(29)

“Miss Wen, is the Director in today?”

“Oh, Announcer Jin, how are you?  You wanted to see the Director?  Unfortunately he called earlier and said he would not come into the office.  Is there anything I can do for you?”

“No, it’s nothing.  I just wanted to hand in a report to him.  I’ll stop by tomorrow.”

Walking out of Kenneth’s office, Nicole felt a little uneasy.

Normally they would talk on the phone every morning and arranged to meet somewhere later.  It’d become a routine.  But now it’s close to noon and she still had not heard from him.  That was not like him.  The uneasy feeling grew.  Something must have happened to him.

------------
In front of Kenneth’s apartment, Nicole tried hard to lift the huge pottery by the front door.  She strained under the weight of the hefty thing and finally managed to raise it just high enough to reveal the key hidden below.  Thank goodness it was there.

She opened the door and stepped into the dark hallway.

“Kenneth?”

There was no answer.

His jacket and tie were slung haphazardly on the back of the sofa.  The apartment was quiet.

Nicole walked cautiously into his bedroom.

Like those in the sitting room, the curtains in the bedroom were drawn closed, making the room dark and the air stale.  By the dim night light near the bedside table, Nicole saw Kenneth.

At first glance, he seemed to be fast asleep.  His head turned slightly to the side and a thick blanket was pulled almost to his chin.

But as she walked closer, she could hear his labored breathing.  There were beads of sweat on his forehead too.  She gently touched his face.  A little hot, but not too bad.  She took in the empty glass on the bedside table and quickly went to the kitchen to fetch some water.

“Kenneth,” she called him and caressed his cheek, “Wake up.  Have some water.”

Kenneth moaned.  He turned his head toward Nicole but his eyes were still shut.

Nicole put the water glass on the table, sat down on the edge of the bed, and lifted Kenneth’s head with her arm.

“Come.  Have a sip.  Then you can go back to sleep.”

Groggily Kenneth opened his eyes.  He sipped some water and swallowed it with some difficulty.  Then his eyes focused on Nicole.  Slowly, he smiled.

“How are you feeling now?  Any pain?”

Kenneth shook his head.

“It must be a cold then.  When did it start?  Are you hungry?  Do you want to eat anything?”

“You’ve…so many…questions.” he said in a raspy voice.

Nicole used a hand towel to wipe down his forehead.

“Now just rest.” she said gently.

“Please don’t go.”

“I won’t.”

Assured, Kenneth closed his eyes again.

Out of the blue, a tune popped up in Nicole’s mind.  It was a song her father used to sing when she was a child and had to stay in bed for some minor ills.  Now how did it go?

Little boat, little boat, with the white sail,
   Flying high, flying high, away like a sad tale;
No worry, no worry, Papa said to the little dear,
We’ll play and play, until the winds wail.

After she finished, Kenneth said with a sigh, “It’s very beautiful.”

Soon after he fell back to sleep.

------------
It was almost six.  For dinner, Nicole had made some congee and bought a pot of ginseng chicken soup.  Kenneth was still weak, but managed to finish his portion.  Nicole tested his forehead again and found to her satisfaction that the temperature was almost all gone.  “I predict you will recover by tomorrow.”

“I trust your words, Dr. Jin.”

“Do you want to lie down now?”

Kenneth shook his head.  “I’ve had enough sleep.  And thank you for staying with me all this time.”

“Don’t mention it.  Besides, it’s time well spent.”  She held up a book and a few file folders.  “I got some work done as well.  Now, aren’t you moved by my diligence?”

“Very much so.  I thank you on behalf of all the shareholders.”

Nicole told him that the next guest of the talk show was a columnist specialized in marriage and relationship.  She was so popular that her first book, a collection of her newspaper columns, became a best seller overnight.  Nicole planed to interview her and some readers who had benefited from following her advice.

“Did you mean there are people who believe in what she says?” Kenneth asked.

“Of course.  As long as they are good, sensible advice, why shouldn’t people believe them?”

“But it’s from a columnist, a total stranger who had no idea what the people involved are like, what is the history behind the obvious, or any other complication.  How can you trust her advice?”

“Sometimes it does take an outsider to see clearly what the problem is.  You know, the so called casting a cold eye and all that.” Nicole looked at Kenneth curiously.  “Now tell me, what would you do when you have some relationship problems?”

“Well, I definitely would not write a letter to this woman so that one hundred thousand perfect strangers would know I was dumped by my girlfriend.”

Nicole laughed.  “So what would you do?”

Kenneth pretended to be considering.  “I think everyday I’d send her a lovely rose and shout ‘I love you, Nicole!’ in front of her house.”

“That’s the most ridiculous answer I’ve ever heard!”

Kenneth looked at her with his penetrating eyes.

“So please don’t dump me, would you?”

------------
After Kenneth fell back to sleep, Nicole put several water bottles and a box of tissues on the bedside table.  She also made sure an extra blanket was right by his side.  This time Kenneth’s sleep was untroubled.  His thick eyelashes rested peacefully and his breathing normal.  Nicole stood there, watching him, and could not control the urge.  She bent down and kissed him softly on the cheek.  Then she fled before she could do anything else equally embarrassing.

(30)

“You are at work already?  All’s well now?”

“Yes, except my left cheek.  I think a little bee stung me there.”

“You!  I am going to hang up.”

“No, please don’t.  I apologize.  Actually, I have an idea for your show.”

“Let’s hear it.”

“It’s related to the marriage expert.  If that kind of question and answer session is so popular, maybe we should make it a regular part of the program.  And since you are such an inquisitive person, why don’t you play Madam Nicole, the know-it-all?”

Nicole laughed out load.  “Me? Madam Nicole?”  In her mind she imagined a Nicole with the hair pulled back into a severe bun, a pair of old maid glasses, and a disapproving look as if protesting the follies of young people nowadays.

“The image is too mature?  Then you will be the Big Sis Nicole.  Anyway, that’s just a suggestion.”

“Kenneth, thank you.  I really like the idea.  I will discuss it with the producers.”  After a pause, she continued. “It’s so nice of you to worry about me even when you’re sick.”

“As long as you are with me, new ideas seem to pour out of me.  In fact, I think you are my inspiration.”

From his voice Nicole could tell that he was not joking.  He meant what he said.  The realization came true and strong and she could not help but feet like crying.

“Did I make you teary again?” his low voice was gentle and soothing.

“No, not at all.  I got to go to the group meeting now.”

“See you tonight.”

------------
Just after Nicole settled into her seat, Kenneth said with great excitement, “I have something wonderful to show you.  But, you have to promise me first.”

“Promise you what?”  Nicole looked at him suspiciously.

“Don’t worry; it is an absolutely good thing.  You only need to sit back and let it happen.”

With a huge grin, he took out two picture frames from a bag.  “One’s for you, and the other one I’m going to put in my office.”

Nicole reached for the platinum frame.  The modern design is very clean and simple, drawing people’s attention naturally to the photograph it framed.  It was the one taken after the tennis game at the resort.  They both were flush and sweaty.  Nicole laughed into the camera triumphantly, the joy of winning evident in her posture.  Kenneth smiled equally brilliantly, a most willing loser surrendering to the charms of his conquer.  Nicole did not remember they had been standing so close together.

“Did you say you want to put this in your office?”

“Yes.  I think whenever I am tired, looking at it will revive me in no time.”

“But…”

“Nicole, sooner or later people will know.  You have to be ready for it.  OK?”

Nicole took a deep breath.  He was right, of course.  If she treasured their relationship, she had to face the inevitable.  And did she treasure what she had with him?  Without any hesitation, she nodded to herself, and to Kenneth.

------------
These days Miss Wen found herself the most popular person at MBS.  The numerous secretaries, section heads, managers, plus a lot of other titled dignities, all took a sudden interest in her little territory.  Especially when the director was away, they all wanted to ‘take a look’ around his office.

She had no doubt what the main attraction was; she herself had examined it thoroughly the day it first showed up.

Not to be boastful or anything, Miss Wen believed she’d picked up the hints long before that.  Actually, ever since Announcer Jin’s first appointment, she had sensed there’s something unusual in the director’s attitude.

From then on, the clues just kept coming.  Phone calls, programs, notes.  Until Announcer Jin’s presence was everywhere.  And now, the most undeniable evidence was positioned proudly on the director’s desk, daring every visitor to try not to stare at it.  However, being a dutiful secretary, Miss Wen had her principles.  Of all the nosy people only those who passed her scrutiny earned the privilege of admiring the photograph.

(31)

The dreaded but expected onslaught of rumors and ‘concerns’ about the Director’s romance did not materiaze.  Nicole was pleasantly surprised, and relieved.

Maybe it was because the way Kenneth did it, so direct and matter-of-fact, that people felt ashamed to gossip too much.

Two normal, unattached people met and found a kindred spirit in each other.  Why couldn’t they date and have fun, without any interference?  The laughing duo in the photograph seemed to be asking.

Even Chen-Shui, who usually could not hold his tongue about anything, did not say much to Nicole this time, except an occasional wink and a knowing smile.

Well, what her colleagues thought or said behind her back, Nicole did not have time to worry.  She was simply too busy.  Her talk show, ‘Time with Nicole,’ was a great hit ever since its premier.  Very soon it shot straight to the number one spot on the rating charts.  Nicole was ecstatic about its success, but the pressure to keep the show in top shape also made her very nervous.

She had never worked so hard in her life.  Before each new taping, she had to read up on all she and her researchers could find about the topics and guests, thought about interesting questions to ask, and ways to get the audience involved in the discussions.

“This is harder than my school days!” she half-jokingly complained.

“Now you know knowledge is power and it’s never too late to learn.  We MBS should charge you tuition.”

“Hey, give me my raise first.”  She poked her head closer.  “I hear the ad revenue is fantastic, is it not?”

“I guess I ended up the poor loser here.  I have to buy delicious treats for our precious Miss Jin, AND listen to her complain.”

“Well, you don’t have to if you don’t want to.”  Nicole said nonchalantly.  The ‘what do I care’ attitude was so tantalizing to Kenneth that he wanted to give her a big kiss right there and then.

“Why do you look at me like that?” Nicole asked.

“It’s better that you don’t know the reason.” Kenneth said, smiling.

Nicole blushed, but managed to give him a look all the same.

------------
“Why can’t we work on this topic?”

When she heard that conclusion from the producer, Kim, and the writer, Pearl, Nicole was very surprised.  “Didn’t they approve the proposal and the script?”

“Well, what got approved was the program summary.  But because of the Parks suit, things have become very touchy.  Management is afraid that the topic is too inflammatory, that it might offend people.  We might even get punished by the Broadcast Committee.”

Nicole frowned.  How did things get so complicated?

When Pearl first proposed the idea, Nicole took to it right away.  Even though she herself had not suffered from it, Nicole knew the law treated women differently, and in many cases, unfairly, than it did men.  She and Pearl wanted to use some real people and real cases to look at this issue.

Right at this juncture, the lawsuit between the Parks - C.B. Park, CEO of Park Industries, and his sister-in-law, the widowed Mrs. Hui Park - broke out and got everyone’s attention.  Suddenly the rights of women became the most hotly debated subject and attracted responses from extremists on both sides of the issue.

“The Parks case is about the eldest son being sued by the younger bother’s widow.  If we don’t use that kind of examples, then…”

Kim interrupted Nicole.  “It’s no use.  Right now everything’s been put under a microscope.  As long as there is anything remotely related to the case, it’d invite scrutiny.”

“So?  Just let them scrutinize.”

“My dear Announcer Jin, remember this is C. B. Park we are talking about.  He’s so ruthless that he won’t even cut any slack for his brother’s widow.  How can we fight against him?  Besides, many old-fashioned people think women have no right to inherit at all…”

“There’s more reason we should hold a public discussion about it.”

“Sorry,” Kim said firmly, “The instruction I got is to scrap it.”

Exasperated, Nicole looked to Pearl, who said nothing but just shook her head slightly.

------------
Scrap it…  Instruction from above...  The more Nicole thought about it, the more agitated she became.  If an independent news medium like MBS could not decide what to pursue and report, the freedom of speech was a total fake.

She picked up the phone.

“Hello, Miss Wen, this is Nicole Jin.  May I talk to the Director?”

(32)

“Director Yoon, Announcer Jin is here.”

“Ask her in.”

Kenneth took a deep breath.  Of course he knew what Nicole wanted to see him for.  Hoping that Kim, the producer, could put an end to the program was just that, a hope.  Now Kenneth only wished Nicole would not be too crushed by the inevitable outcome.

“How did you find time to grace my humble office today?”

“I’m here on business.”  Nicole glared at him.  Then she saw the by now very famous photograph on his desk.  Well, the way he positioned the frame, it was impossible not to see it.  What was he thinking, Nicole wondered.  It’s as if the photograph was for the visitors as much as for himself.  She shook her head, remembering the purpose of her visit.

“Why can’t we go ahead with the women’s rights segment?” she asked directly.

“What did the producer say?”

“He said the situation is very sensitive, that the station is afraid of being sued, and the responses from the audience might not be good.”

“Those reasons…do you agree?”

“They are not reasons at all.”  Nicole looked at him straight in the eye.  “We can pick suitable topics to avoid any reference to the Parks case.  And educating the audience about equality and human rights is our responsibility.”

“Nicole, what you said makes total sense.  The problem is,” Kenneth said calmly, “In the real world, not everyone is as reasonable.”

“What does that mean?”

“I am only saying no matter how carefully you go about producing the segment, once it’s aired, MBS will be in trouble.  We don’t need to implicate ourselves in that matter.”

“Did you mean C. B. Park will definitely sue us?  And because of a widow-cheating, money-grubbing bully we decided not to do the program?” Nicole strained to keep her voice level.

“Nicole, please don’t take so simplistic a view.  Things are more…”

“I am that simplistic!  To me, black is black and white is white.  There’s no grey area between right and wrong.  Director Yoon is not a woman, so you cannot understand what we feel about injustice and prejudice!”

Before Kenneth could answer, from the intercom Miss Wen’s voice announced, “Director, Councilor Cam is here.”

“OK.”

Nicole stood up.

“You were so worried about Park, you even have the lawyer ready?” She could not keep the incredulity and anger out of her voice.  “I will leave you to it.”

Kenneth stood up too.  He walked over to her and said, “I will see you tonight at our place.”

“I am sorry; I don’t have time.”

Nicole was in such a haste to leave his office she almost bumped into the person walking in.  A lady.  A very beautiful lady.

“Oh, you must be Announcer Jin.  So nice to meet you.  I am Iris Cam.”  She held out her hand.  “Kenny told me so much about you.  I’m glad we finally met.”

Automatically Nicole accepted the proffered hand.  It was cool and smooth, very elegant too.

“Nice to meet you, Miss Cam.  Now if you’d excuse me…”

Behind Nicole, Kenneth said, “Come on in, Iris.”

------------
It’s past nine, but Nicole was not hungry at all.

She had been strategizing ways to get around those god-forsaken Parks.  There must be some angle she could use to discuss the issue without getting into legal deep waters.

She also could not stop thinking about that beautiful lawyer.

She called him Kenny.  He called her Iris.

Not Miss Cam, or Councilor Cam, but a simple, endearing Iris.  Beautiful, smart Iris.

The phone rang again.  Nicole looked at the caller ID.  It’s from Kenneth.  She let it ring.

She had never been so angry in her whole life.

(33)

This time it was Nicole’s cell phone making the insistent noise.  She checked the caller ID on the panel.  A Mr. Chen.  Who could that be?

“Hello?”

“Nicole, please don’t hang up.”  It’s Kenneth.  “I am near your house.  Could we talk, please?”

“Whose phone are you using?”

“Oh, I borrowed it from a stranger.  I told him my girlfriend wouldn’t answer my phone and he understood.”

Nicole pursed her lips, still sulky.

“I haven’t eaten a thing since noon.  Didn’t you say as long as I’m with you I won’t ever go hungry?”

His voice did sound tired and listless.  And he’d just recovered from the cold.  Nicole felt a pang of pity.  Then, she suddenly realized she was starving too.

“I did not eat anything either,” she said in a whisper.

Those few, simple words stabbed Kenneth like a thousand sharp knives.  He hurt so much he shut his eyes.

“Nicole…”

Nicole sighed.  This was really ridiculous.  Two supposedly mature adults playing nonsense games with each other, what for?

“Where are you?”

“I’ll be at the front door in three minutes.”

------------
Nicole cooked two packets of noodles and loaded them up with eggs, shrimps, kimchi, and tofu.  Kenneth proclaimed that was the best ramen he’d ever had.  Nicole secretly agreed.

After the meal, they sat side by side on the sofa.

“A lot of things I have not told you, because I don’t want you to worry, to feel bad.”

“But, have you thought about my feelings, when not knowing what’s going on, that I’d just worry even more?”

Kenneth nodded.

“That’s why I decided to be more talkative, just like you.”  He smiled at her.  “It is a totally new thing for me and I have to learn to do it.”

He sipped at the barley tea.

“In fact, Mrs. Park, Auntie Park, is not as helpless as you think.”

“You know her too?” Nicole’s eyes widened.

“Yes.  Before Uncle Park passed away, from kidney failures, he had sorted out all financial matters.  Auntie Park is well provided for and would not have to worry a thing for the rest of her life.”

“Then, why did she…”

“I have no idea.”  Kenneth shrugged.  “The money she is fighting to get now does not belong to her.”

“No wonder C.B. Park is so ticked off.”

“Exactly.  I think by now both are behaving irrationally.  The lawyer you saw in my office, she works for CB.  She came to warn me, because not just CB, she heard Auntie Park is considering suing us.”

“That lawyer, Miss Cam…why did she take the trouble to warn you?”

“Because her father is my father’s personal lawyer,” Kenneth rubbed his forehead, looking absolutely drained.  “When my uncle and my father had their law suit, Mr. Cam helped out a lot.”

“President Yoon and President Chou?” Nicole murmured incredulously.

Kenneth gave a sad smile.  “Yes.  Uncle sued Father for some old properties some time ago.  They said it was a fight for ancestral heritage, for family pride.  But, in all reality, it was about Mother.”

Nicole just sat there and could not think of anything to say.

“Now you understand why I did not care to talk about this?”

He took a deep breath and leaned back on the sofa.  Nicole reached out for his hand and clasped it tightly.

Of course she knew all was not what it seemed for the rich and famous.  But she’d never realized how bad things could really get, when you had the power to wreck other people’s lives, but were utterly helpless to save your own.  And that’s the environment where he grew up.  How did he feel watching his uncle and his father hating each other because of his mother?

“But, do you feel a little bit better now?”  Nicole looked at him anxiously.  “Now that you’ve had it out?”

“You know what, I do.”  He smiled, and kissed her hand gently.

“Hold on.  What about that Miss Cam?”

“What about her?”

“She called you Kenny.”

“Oh, I hate it when people do that,” he said irritably, “that’s totally uncalled for.”  Then, as a new thought crossed his mind, he turned to her.  “Wow, you were not jealous of her, were you?”

“Who’s jealous?  Don’t flatter yourself.” Nicole snorted, but she could not hide the joy she’s feeling.

“But seriously, thank you so much for telling me everything.  I won’t insist on doing that program anymore.  I am not totally unreasonable, you know.”

“I know.  Thank you.”  He pulled her closer.  “And thank you for hearing me out.”

“As I always say, you need to be more open, just like me.”  She raised her arms wide, exaggerating.  “Don’t bottle everything in.  Just say it out loud.”

Kenneth laughed.  “I think one announcer in our family is plenty enough.  I’d be your personal assistant.”

(34)

In the production meeting, the producers all agreed to table the segment about women’s rights, until ‘the tide has died down.’  Expecting Nicole to protest vehemently but only seeing her silent consent, Pearl kept glancing in her direction.  Nicole knew what Pearl was puzzling about but she was in no position to explain the whole thing to her.  All she could do was to smile apologetically at Pearl.

Gradually, she understood the difficulty Kenneth must have faced everyday, of NOT saying what you truly believed.

After the meeting she approached Pearl.

“Don’t worry.  This is just temporary; I will not give up.  We will do this segment together.”  Nicole looked at Pearl sincerely.  Pearl nodded.

------------
“Ah, Miss Jin, you have not waited for long, I hope?”

Like a fragrant breeze, Iris Cam floated by Nicole, said hello, and sat herself down across the table.

Nicole tried not to stare at her too obviously.  When she received the phone call she was very surprised.  She could not fathom what Iris could possibly want to discuss with her.  But her curiosity was too strong to turn Iris down.  At least she would have a chance to get close and personal to this smart and beautiful woman.

“Do you think the coffee is OK?  They are famous for their fruit tarts actually.  Do you want to sample some?”

Iris was indeed beautiful.  Her face was made up just so that one wondered if she used any cosmetics at all.  The superbly cut light gray suit fitted her like a dream.  She picked up the coffee cup elegantly and smiled at Nicole.

Nicole found herself straighten up in her seat.

“Thank you but I am fine.  May I ask why you wanted to see me?”

“If you don’t mind, call me Iris and I shall call you Nicole.”  She reached for the cream.  “I heard from Kenny that you are an excellent announcer.  You also helped him a lot.”

Nicole frowned.  Help him?

“As for me, even though I do not work for him directly, I am very close to him and Uncle Yoon.”

Nicole was still waiting.

“My father is Uncle Yoon’s personal lawyer.”  She revealed the information very solemnly.

“I knew.”

“Did you?” she raised her nicely groomed brows.  “Kenny told you?”

Nicole did not say anything.

“Anyway, I just want to make sure you understand that their affairs are quite complicated.  So, it’s best to leave them to those who have intimate knowledge of the family.”

“Miss Cam, you totally lost me.  Could you please tell me what you really want to say?”

Iris looked at Nicole skeptically.  A young girl, barely out of her teens, pretty in a the-girl-next-door way but nothing to write home about.  Could she be the scheming, greedy gold-digger Iris suspected, no, wanted her to be?  Was the incomprehension on her face faked or genuine?  Did she know that it was Kenneth, the charming, aloof, painfully unattainable man of her, Iris’, dreams that she was infringing upon?

“I just wanted to say that being seen together with Kenneth might not be good for you, or for him.”  She looked at Nicole seriously.  “You might still be too young to appreciate that.”

Nicole did not quite believe she heard correctly.

“Do you want me to stop seeing Kenneth?”

“If you’d like to put it that way, then yes.”

Nicole stared at Iris, not shying away.

“May I ask what gives you the right to demand that?”

“I’ve told you…”

“Yes, you said you are a friend.  But, he has so many friends.  Why do you think you can interfere in his private life?”

“Nicole Jin, now you listen.  Out of the kindness of my heart, I warn you not to dwell in your Cinderella dream.  In the end you’d just get found out and get yourself hurt.”

“Then I have to ask who are you to me?  I don’t know you and certainly don’t need your kindness.”  Nicole stood up.  “If that’s all you had to say, I shall say good-bye now.  Thanks for the coffee.”

Iris stood up too.

“Don’t think just because he put your picture on the desk you have gotten him."  She hissed.  "Kenneth is not that easy to fool.  He will see through you in no time.”

“Then there is nothing for you to worry, is there?”

Nicole turned and walked out.  Iris just stood there, watching her disappear into the busy streets outside.

A young and simple girl, maybe not.

(35)

“Oh, Iris, have a seat.”

Kenneth pointed to the leather sofa and settled himself in a chair across.

“What can I do for you?”  He looked at her.  If he was a little surprised to her at his office, he did not let it show.

“I just wonder if there is anything new about the talk show.”

“We’ve decided not to do that segment at this time.  You can tell CB not to worry about it.”

“That’s great news.  I am sure he will be very pleased.”  She turned her head a little and took in the picture of Kenneth and Nicole.

“Is that the anchor who insists on doing the program?”

Kenneth followed her gaze to the picture but did not say anything.

“Just the other day I had the pleasure of talking with her.  It’s really quite interesting.”  She paused and peered at Kenneth.  His expression was unreadable.  Iris continued carefully.

“I don’t know whether it’s because she is too young or too inexperienced, she does not seem to comprehend the complexity of this matter.”  She smiled.  “I am a little concerned that she might say something inappropriate, you know, to the outside.”

Nicole had said nothing about this chat with Iris, thought Kenneth.

Seeing that Kenneth was still silent, Iris continued.
“Kenneth, maybe this is none of my business, but I don’t trust that Announcer Jin.  You have just met her…”

“Iris, thank you for your concerns.  Now, if you don’t have anything else,” Kenneth smiled and stood up.

“Kenneth,” she looked at him earnestly, not willing to give up.  “Appearances can be deceiving.  You are a gentleman, but you can’t believe everyone else is just as honest as you.”

“Iris,” Kenneth spoke slowly, “there is no secret between Nicole and me.  I have another meeting in five minutes and I trust you can find your way out.  Please pay my respects to your father.  Good-bye.”

------------
“You have not told me if you met anyone strange or funny recently.”

Nicole stopped her fork in a huge pile of spaghetti and looked up, puzzled.

She always reported the weird and sometimes crazed characters she’d encountered in the line of work, but she could not think of any such specimen in the recent past.  Now, who had she talked to…Suddenly she remembered.

“Wow!”

“Wow what?”

“Lawyers are a tough bunch!”

Kenneth tried not to smile but the effort to suppress was too much.

“What about lawyers?”

Nicole resumed her spaghetti twirling operation. “You know, that Miss Cam.  She bought me a cup of coffee the other day.”

“Really.  What did she want?”

Nicole cast him a look. “I was wondering about that the whole time too.  Until she finally came out and said it.”

She put a huge ball of the pasta into her mouth.  Kenneth put down his fork and waited patiently.

“To put it simply, she thinks you are too good for me, and I will be ruined if I don’t stay away.”

The way she said it was devoid of any emotion, as if she was reporting some traffic jam in the business district.  Kenneth hesitated.  Her tone sounded normal enough.  But how did she really feel?  Was she offended?  Was she discouraged?

“Nicole…”

“Ha! I got you, didn’t I?” Nicole was laughing, waving her fork at him.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Oh yes, you do.  You thought I was scared by Miss Cam, didn’t you?”

“Did you?”

Nicole picked up her napkin and wiped her mouth.

“Why didn’t you ask me what I said to her?”

Kenneth just smiled at her.

“Well, I said it’s between you and me and none of her business.”

“You know lawyers are nosy and love to get into other people’s business.”

“You can say that again.  I don’t know that many lawyers but I know SHE would love to get into YOUR business!”

“Actually I am thinking about retaining a personal lawyer.”

“Then Miss Cam will be ideal for it; the way she defended your interests is really touching.”

“Remember she will be your lawyer too once we get married.”

“Oh no, then I would not even know what got me in the end.” Nicole pretended to shudder.  Then she pursed her lips. “Did you just say married?”

“As my father loves to say, a good thing never needs repeating.”

(36)

 “Judith, you are still here?”

Nicole was ready to leave until she noticed Judith was still at her desk and stared blankly into the space ahead.

“Oh, Nicole.  Are you free tonight?  Want to have dinner with me?”

“Of course.  That’d be lovely.” Nicole answered happily.  Kenneth had a dinner meeting and promised to call her afterward.  She had not had a chance to catch up with Judith in a long while, ever since Judith started dating Dale.  Thinking of Dale, where was he tonight?

“How about Dale?  Is he coming?”

“I don’t know where he is and I don’t care,” Judith answered in a puff. “Don’t mind him.  Let’s just go.”

------------
“How are you and…Kenneth? Good?”

Nicole smiled sweetly and nodded.

Judith continued. “I was a big fool.  I thought dating would be like news reporting.  As long as you’re well prepared, have studied and understood the script, everything would just go smoothly according to the time table.” She sighed. “Who would think people are that complicated?”

“Dale…he ignored directions and grabbed your lines?”

Judith smiled. “I guess everyone has his own ideas.”

Nicole nodded her agreement.  “You are right.  I like to have my say too.  Even though I know I am not clever or experienced, I still would like to do things my own way.  It is so hard to have to listen to others.”

“That’s it! Sometimes I just can’t swallow it.”

The two looked at each other and laughed.

“Kenneth adores you,” Judith said with a hint of envy.

“He can be very demanding.”

“I bet he won’t be as bad as Dale.  Tell me, did Kenneth criticize the style of your earrings?” Judith turned her head a bit to show off the long dangling silver tear drops she’s wearing.

Nicole considered. “No, but he said my steps are too bouncy, and I fidget all the time.”

Judith laughed. Kenneth and Nicole.  Looking at them now, she had no doubt they were a perfect couple, practically made for each other.  Why had she thought they wouldn't last?

“Kenneth’s changed so much since he met you.”

“Really? What was he like before?”

“Do you remember when it is raining hard, you get dripping wet, but you cannot have a change of clothes?” Judith made a face. “That was Kenneth then. Now he is all sunny.”

Nicole smiled.

“How about Dale?”

“Dale is like an old, wood burning oven.  Cozy, warm, but sometimes it gives off an awful smell.”

“So here you are!”

All of a sudden, Old Oven Dale was standing by Judith’s side.

“Oh, hello, Dale.” Nicole stood up quickly.

“What are you doing here?” Judith eyed him coldly. “Didn’t you just hate stubborn and self-righteous women?”

“Judith!”

Nicole watched the sweats beading up on Dale’s forehead and tried not to laugh.

“Um, Dale, why don’t you sit down to keep Judith company?  I’ve got to go now.  I have another thing.”

At the restaurant door, Nicole looked back.  Dale was explaining something, both hands gesturing extravagantly.  Judith was just looking at him, not saying a word.  Her expression could be the beginning of smile, or a sneer. It’s hard to say.

Nicole quickly lowered her head so no one would notice HER grin.

------------
When she got home, Kenneth was waiting at the door already.

“Oh, you finished early.  Why didn’t you call me?” Nicole said happily.

“My dear Miss Jin, if you don’t mind please check you cell phone.”

“Sorry, I must have switched it off when I was eating with Judith.”

”Judith? Where was Dale and why didn’t he eat with Judith?”

”Because they had a fight, that’s why.”

“Is that so? I think Dale might need another tip from me.”

“Yeah? And what qualifies you to give tips on relationship?”

Kenneth flashed her a brilliant smile.

“Because I am learning from the master?”

Nicole nodded. “Good boy. So what would you say to Dale?”

“When in doubt, always say it’s my fault, and I love you forever.”

“You made it sound so coy and superficial.”

“No matter,” Kenneth held her hand to his chest, “only you need to know it’s true.”

(37)

“This thing should have been handled more discretely.  Now that it became an open secret, not just the morale of our employees are affected, some bad behaviors are also on the rise.” Mr. Kim paused and looked at Kenneth pointedly.

“Favoritism, bribery…The fair and just system that your mother and father worked so hard to build is endangered.”

Kenneth lowered his head and knew in his heart what Mr. Kim said was true.

It all started with the airing of ‘Time with Nicole.’  The way the program had gone off so swiftly and decisively piqued the curiosity of everyone.  Once the involvement of Kenneth was known, rumors started in earnest.  Then, the photograph and stories about Kenneth and Nicole hit the grapevines…

What frustrated Kenneth was that he had nothing to say to defend himself.  ‘Time with Nicole’ was for Nicole, plain and simple.  The program was a big success and Nicole had proven herself a wonderful and popular hostess.  But those were beyond the points.  The matter of the fact is: he was being unfair, to the other hardworking and maybe just as talented people under his care.  For that, he had no excuse.

Thus, he could only sit in Mr. Kim’s office and listen to the lecture gloomily.

“I heard from President Yoon that you and Miss Jin…get along very well?”

Kenneth nodded.  “Yes.”

“Then you should seriously think about marriage.  Afterwards, Miss Jin can concentrate on managing the family affairs.”  Mr. Kim looked at Kenneth.  “You know it cannot go on like this.”

Kenneth did not say anything.

------------
“Dear Miss Jin, I am so sorry to bother you.  I don’t know how to write a proper letter.  I love to watch ‘Time with Nicole.’  I watch it every time.  I like ‘These Glorious Women’ the best.  Councilor Cam saved my house.  Councilor Cam is wonderful.  Councilor Cam should be on the show.  Thank you for your time.  Sorry if I make any mistake.  Your faithful viewer, Shee Lee”

Nicole looked at the big, carefully written characters on the paper and imagined Mrs. Lee labored over it, trying to express her feelings with the right words.  Nicole had no doubt that everything she wrote was true.

And what a surprise the letter revealed!  Councilor Cam, the beautiful, smart, only-I-am-worthy-of-Kenneth Iris Cam, a people’s hero?

------------
“Please sit down.” Iris gestured politely to a chair.  She had no idea why Nicole wanted to see her.  To rub it in, as in a victory parade?  Nicole did not look the type but nowadays you never knew.  Iris steeled herself for whatever that was to come.

“Councilor Cam, I am trying to get some answer.”
Nicole handed her the letter from Mrs. Lee.

Iris glanced over it quickly.  Then she looked up at Nicole.

“This was a month or two ago.  Mrs. Lee’s husband suddenly died from an illness.  She did not know the property tax on the house was overdue, and the Housing Bureau threatened to take over it.  I wrote an appeal for her, paid up the tax and fines, and that was that.”

“Is Mrs. Lee your client?”

Iris smiled.  “Of course not.  She cannot afford me.” She returned the letter to Nicole.  “Mrs. Lee came to me through the Volunteer Legal Eagles.  I go there a few times every month.”

Then, seeing Nicole’s expression, Iris added, “You do know about that organization, don’t you?”

“Yes, yes, of course.  I just could not take in that you…”

“That I would volunteer?  Was that what you’re going to say?”

Nicole blushed.  She’d guessed somehow Mrs. Lee became a beneficiary of Iris’ charity work.  But she had also imagined it to be a lark, a lucky turn of events for Mrs. Lee, and a ‘fun’ thing a high-profiled lawyer such as Iris did to amuse herself.  She was surprised to find that Iris performed that kind of service regularly, and apparently treated it as nothing out of ordinary.

Why couldn’t she ever learn, that people should not be judged so simply?  Nicole chastised herself.  She also felt slightly ashamed.  When did she, a self-proclaimed rights fighter, do anything directly for the poor and the needy?

“No, I think that is great.  Actually I think it’s more than great.  I want to put you on my show to let more people know about your great work…”

“Miss Jin, I guess I did not make it clear to you.  The Volunteer Legal Eagles stuff is free.  I do it just to help, not for glory or recognition.  On the contrary, if my involvement gets publicized, I will be swamped with requests, and, I won’t have any paying customers left.”

Nicole considered this.  Yes, Iris was right.  Just putting her on TV would not do much for the cause but could hurt Iris’ practice.  But, Nicole thought earnestly, there must be a way to promote the good work, to help more people.

------------
“Why are you staring at me?”

“I want to know how we are doing tonight.”

“What? You want to pick a fight?” Nicole turned her head up. “By the way, I don’t know about you, but I am doing very well, thank you very much.”

Kenneth laughed.

“I just want to discuss something with you.”

“Really? I have something I would like to talk to you too.”

“What did I tell you, we are getting so in-sync that it is a bit scary.”

Now it’s Nicole’s turn to laugh.

“Tell me what you were going to say.”

“No, you go first.” Kenneth looked at her sparkling eyes, wondering if the time was right to bring up the subject he had mulled over for quite some time now.

Without further prompting, Nicole poured out the Mrs. Lee episode. “I could not believe I was still such an idiot.  Just because I thought Miss Cam was an uppity kind of person, I denied her all the kindness and good will any decent person would have. Now I want very much to help her, to do more. Is there any way the volunteer service can be expanded, do you think, so that ordinary people won’t be so helpless when they get entangled in some legal matter?”

An enigmatic smile spread slowly on Kenneth’s face.

Before Nicole could ask any question, he took out two thick folders from his briefcase.

“Your pick.  One is Wen Ron Charity Fund, the other is Wen Ron Organization for Humanities.”

“Father is the chairman of both organizations. He would like to stay on, because he truly wants to do what’s right, to give back to the society. But, he also realizes to manage the foundations more efficiently, he needs someone more energetic and perhaps more idealistic.” He paused and smiled at Nicole. “You know, someone who is not easily deterred.”

“You want me to manage Wen Ron Charity Fund?” Nicole asked incredulously.

“It is not as complicated as you think. Father and his advisors will help you ease your way into it. You can use Iris’ Legal Eagle as a test case. See if you can expand it. Isn’t that exactly what you wanted to do?”

“Yes, it is. But, but I am so afraid I am not up to it.” She looked at Kenneth anxiously. “What if I mess it up?”

“Nicole, the only way to mess up is to do nothing. You’ve always wanted to make a difference, right? Now it’s your chance.”

Nicole was still too stunned to think clearly. But she sensed that she’s signing on to something much more complex than managing a charity fund, if that’s possible. She looked at Kenneth. His sculpture-like features were at their most relaxed, a little five-o’clock shadow just above the mouth only making him more endearing. And his eyes, so clear and full of warmth, embracing her as if saying everything would be all right.

“You always throw these impossible challenges at me!” she complained, maybe just wanting to hear his reassurance one more time.

“Come. Stop worrying and give me a smile. Didn’t you know you have the most beautiful, uplifting smile?” He held her hands tightly. “Everything is going to be fine.”

(38)

“You are really lucky, did you know?” After Nicole’s report of the discussion with Kenneth, Iris observed.

Nicole smiled shyly. “Yes, I know. But I also feel unworthy and nervous. I don’t want to let him down.”

She faced Iris and went on. “Just like you said, I don’t have much experience. But, I really do want to contribute whatever I can. Will you help me? Please?”

Iris examined the young girl in front of her. With every encounter, she discovered one more reason to like her. It’s so strange, this developing affection between two people. What had finally won her over was Nicole’s kindness. Hers was the real thing, from the bottom of her heart, unpretended, and most of the time, unconscientious.

“OK, I will give it a try. But, let me make it clear. I will work free for the Charity Fund. As for the Organization for Humanities, I will charge you my standard rate.”

Nicole answered excitedly, “no problem, Councilor!”

------------
“We begin our Charity Board meeting today by introducing two new additions. Miss Nicole Jin will be our acting executive manager, and Miss Iris Cam is Miss Jin’s legal advisor. Let’s give them our warmest welcome.” President Yoon gestured toward Nicole and Iris and the two bowed deeply.

After Nicole sat down, Kenneth reached for her hand discretely and gave it a gentle squeeze. Nicole shot him a don’t-you-know-I’m-working look, but followed it with a quick smile. The other members who were observant enough to catch their actions exchanged knowing smiles among themselves.

Nicole coughed and shook her head slightly. Then she picked up a pen and started to take notes of the discussion.

Kenneth too forced himself to concentrate, a task far more difficult than he would ever admit.

------------
After the meeting, President Yoon asked Kenneth to stay behind.

“Are you going to propose to her?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” President Yoon nodded slowly.

“I was very nervous the day I planed to ask for your mother’s hand.” President Yoon looked at Kenneth. “I have not told you this, have I?

I’d prepared my speech, but when the time came, I just could not say it. I was afraid she would laugh at me. A nobody with no money, no connections, who wanted to marry someone so precious like your mother.

Just as I was struggling there, she started to say something. Did you know what she said? She says, ‘I know what you want to ask. My answer is yes. I will stay with you always.’”

President Yoon’s voice quivered. He looked at Kenneth pleadingly.

“I am so sorry, Kenneth. I broke your mother’s heart, and I broke yours. I am so…” He could not finish.

Kenneth took a step forward. He put his hands around his father’s shoulders and held him close. The old man rested his head on his son’s broad chest, crying quietly.

Kenneth closed his eyes. He saw his mother and father, their laughter when they were happy, then later, her agony, her tears.

“It’s OK, Dad. It’s OK,” he murmured.

Kenneth was quite sure he heard his mother saying the same.

“Love, what a troublesome folly!”

Head lowered, shoulders slacked, Dale stared into the beer in front of him grumpily, as if looking for some elusive clues how not to anger Judith.

Tonight Judith was out on a business trip and Nicole working late, so Dale and Kenneth were having a rare buddies’ night out.  However, although the fair maidens were physically absent, their spirits still lingered, prompting Dale to revisit their latest spat over something he could not even remember.

“No pain, no gain! Come!” Kenneth filled up Dale’s mug again.

“You look pretty chippy tonight. So, all’s well on the courting front?”

Kenneth smiled contentedly, but did not say anything.

“Come to think of it, you’ve been very busy setting up things for Nicole.  Are you ready to pop the question?”

“Don’t worry about me. You should focus on Judith and how to get her nailed down,” said Kenneth.

Dale refused to be sidetracked. “If Nicole cannot anchor anymore, you have to let me know as soon as possible. Ah, just when her programs are going so well! You know how difficult it is to find another announcer who is both good and popular?”

“It’s her decision really.”

“Did you mean you would let her call the shots? I tell you she is definitely not going to give up.  Career women nowadays are so driven. They want what they want and they will not give an inch!”

Ostensibly it was Nicole who started the discussion, but it took Dale no time at all to revert back to his Judith Problem.

Kenneth laughed. In his good mood he felt expansive and generous; he decided to help a friend in need. “A smart woman like Judith may look tough, especially to someone who wants to love her. But remember she has her soft spots too. Don’t argue with her when she is hot. Wait a while. Once the worst is over, she will listen to you.”

Dale turned around to face Kenneth. “Where did you get that?”

Kenneth grinned and said, “Another smart and tough anchorwoman taught me.”

------------
“If Wen Ron can take care of the rent for the office, that’d be great.” Iris looked at the list in her hand and ticked another item off.

“Sure. I noted that.” Nicole replied.

“About those legal aids, I have made arrangements with Prof. Chen; his law students will come on board to help.  You must remind Kenneth to meet Prof. Chen and settle this.  I figure an attachment program or an internship agreement is in order.”

At that point, Nicole stopped her busy note-taking and looked up.

“I was thinking about those legal aids,” she smiled, still a bit unsure about herself.  “I feel the legal professionals, no matter they’re law school students or actual lawyers in practice, they are…you are…a little too serious.  So, if we can still use some volunteers, you know, ordinary people, to help out, the atmosphere at the office might be easier, more relaxed.”

Iris looked at her, pondering the point.

“That’s a great idea.  You have been very thoughtful.” She then wrote down Nicole’s suggestion.  That done, Iris smiled at Nicole.  “I found working with you is a very pleasant experience.”

“Really? You sounded like you were expecting the worst.”

“You are much better than I thought.”

“So are you!”

The words tumbled out of Nicole’s mouth like little kids out of school.  She gasped, but it’s too late.  She could only look at a laughing Iris apologetically.  Before the laughter died, Iris’s cell phone rang.

“Iris Cam.”

“Oh, yes…yes, we are about to finish.”

“Yes.  Thanks…bye.”

She put down her cell.  “It’s Kenneth.  He said, if I don’t release you at this instance, he’s going to fire me, even if I am free.”

“Did he really…Oh, I am so sorry.  We don’t need to…I mean, please don’t mind him.”

“It’s OK, Nicole.”  Iris started to gather up all the papers spreading out on the desk.   “That’s the type of guys I like.  Decisive, take charge, and suffer no fools.”  She smiled and continued.  “Kenneth is taken by you, so I’d better start searching.”

Before Nicole had a chance to say anything, the door opened and Kenneth poked his head in.

“Is the class dismissed?” he asked.

“I am on my way out.” Iris picked up her briefcase and turned to Nicole. “So see you at the next meeting.”

After Iris was gone, Nicole began the session with Kenneth.

“In the future please do not interrupt when I am having a meeting with Iris.  We were working, you know.”

Kenneth was not the least bit perturbed by that.

“Dealing with a workaholic like her, it is essential to interrupt.  Otherwise, who knows when you will be finished?  It is late already.”

“If you really want to help, please find her a boyfriend.”  She looked over Kenneth appraisingly before continued.  “Try to get someone just like you.”

Kenneth suppressed the urge to laugh, and the urge to grab Nicole into his hold.

Of course he sensed Iris treated him much more than just a friend.  And she was as beautiful and desirable as any girl he’s known.  But, and here was the thing, he had no feelings for her.  He did not miss her if he had not seen her for just a few hours.  He did not think about the way she smiled, the way she talked, the way she just turned her head ever so slightly, like the way Nicole did, when she was concentrating.  He did not feel happy just by being with her.  All those silly and crazy feelings, he only had them for Nicole.  Now why was that?  Why in this world full of incredible creatures he only loved the ONE and had the good fortune of being loved back?  The wonders and mystery were too complicated for him to dwell on.  Watching Nicole’s glorious and loving face, Kenneth could only give thanks.

He reached for her hand.  “Let’s go.  I am going to report Dale’s struggle.”

“Leader Kim’s struggle?  Really?”

The two’s laughter gradually faded away with their footsteps.

Author’s note:

I cannot say enough apologies for the slacking.  Maybe I did not want this to end, as this is the one before the last chapter of my fan-fic.  Thank you all for putting up with me.  I hope it is not a complete waste of your time.

Love,

“Why did we come here tonight?”

Nicole and Kenneth sat at a small outdoor café by the river.

“Don't you like it?  I thought you loved to gaze at the stars.”  Kenneth said.

“Of course I do.  I never get tired of staring at them.  And dreaming too.”  Nicole smiled, “especially in a night like tonight.”

It was a lovely evening.  The moon graciously supplied a soft, gentle glow, a fitting backdrop to thousands of tiny, bright stars all clamoring for attention.  What Nicole did not know was how, in searching for a perfect night, Kenneth almost drove the meteorologists at MBS to despair.

“What were you thinking about when you looked at the stars?” Kenneth asked.

“It's silly, but I always thought we people are so tiny.  Our problems, our struggles...they all seem so trivial among those faraway stars, and the huge universe beyond.”

Kenneth lifted his head too, looking at the boundless sky.  “I did not like stars.  They used to make me feel so alone and isolated.  Now that I am staring at them with you, they do look very fascinating.”  He turned his gaze toward her and smiled.  Nicole was about to say something, but the waitress arrived and started to serve.

“Excuse me, miss.  May I have another glass of water?” Kenneth asked.

Nicole noticed the empty glass in front of him.  “You are thirsty, aren't you?”

“Yeah.  I don't know why but I cannot drink enough water.”

“Are you alright?  You look weird.  Is everything OK?”

“Oh, I am fine.  Don't worry about me; I just want to ask you a question.”

Just then the waitress delivered another glass of water.  Kenneth took up the glass gratefully and finished the content in several gulps.

Nicole looked at him curiously.  “What do you want to ask?”

Kenneth swallowed hard.  His heart beat so fast that he swore he could hear it clearly.  He had to force himself to remember to breathe.  It's so hot in here.  He was thirsty again.

“Nicole...”

He could not continue.  This is ridiculous, he told himself.  In front of you is the one person you want to hold on to for dear life.  Now is the time to speak up, to bare your soul, to leave nothing out.

“I was going to say, would you please to be my companion, my mate, to watch the stars, forever and ever.  But, what I am really trying to say is,” he took a deep breath, “will you please marry me?”

Nicole stared at Kenneth, her expression a blend of surprise and disbelief.

Kenneth slowly opened his hand.  In his palm sat expectantly a ring, a brilliant diamond, shinier than the brightest star.

Nicole did not know what to think.  She wanted to cry.  Why she wanted to do that she had no idea.  She looked at the handsome man, the man of her dreams, his hand held out, his eyes locking hers and seeming to implore.  The proud man, his love, his hurt, his worries, his triumph...she adored every bit about him.  She loved him.

She looked at the diamond ring again.  “You really want to marry me?”

Kenneth laughed.  “Give me your hand, please,” he said.

He carefully picked up the ring, held her hand tight, and slid the ring on her finger.

“There,” he admired the ring and its sweet mistress, “now you cannot say no.”

Through her misty eyes, the ring, Kenneth, the small group of observing, snickering waitresses, all seemed to be shimmering.  She pouted her mouth.

“Hey, I am still considering.”

Kenneth stood up, walked to Nicole's side, and, to the great amusement of all present, lowered his head and kissed her.  “I love you,” he whispered.

------------

“I think I have to say good-bye to my anchorwoman job.”

Nicole rested her head on Kenneth's shoulder.  The had moved on to a park bench, which was just a few feet from the river bank, and they could hear the gentle lapping sound the tides made.

“Do you want to?”

“I think so,” Nicole nodded.  “It's best this way.  I know some people are not happy about me...about our...”  she paused, and smiled at him, “but I cannot be too greedy, right?  Now I have you.”

“Say that last part again.  I could not hear.”

“No, you heard me perfectly.”

“Seriously, I feel bad that you have to give up your job.”

“It's OK.  I have lots of other things to work on.  But, since I did sacrifice my career,” she looked at him slyly, “how are you going to make up to me?”

“Here, I give myself to you.”

“Wow, I am not sure I want that...hey, stop...” her giggles were soon muffled.

------------

“I cannot wait to tell Dad that we are going to marry.  And your father, people at MBS...” Kenneth said excitedly.  In his mind, he started the wedding planning already.

Nicole was studying her ring.  “I say, did you bargain for the ring or not?  According to your aunt, buying diamonds is no small feat.  You need to be shrewd and tough...”

“If you don't stop, I am going to kiss you again.”

“Well, I did not say no, did I?”
