Prolog

SERIES OF SCENES: Previous events from Episodes 1 & 2

Ep.01 - Catholic University of Korea, afternoon

Freshman students are coming to the university with their families on the first day of the new school term.
Sun-Mi is with her father, Ms. Song, and Woo-Jin. Young-Mi is with Jun-Mo, Woo-Jin's friend haring his photography studio.
After they meet...

Young-Mi.......... I heard were in the same class. We can be friends.

Sun-Mi.............. Oh, then we'll help each other.

Jun-Mo............. Ok, pose for a picture together.

Ep.02 - Woo-Jin's photography studio, afternoon

Sun-Mi comes to the studio, where Young-Mi is temporarily living.
There she confronts Young-Mi over lies that she told about her family background and relationship with Sun-Mi's family.

Sun-Mi.............. Dont you think youre too audacious? ... How could you lie to all of them?

Young-Mi.......... Its what your father wants, because he thought you would worry about me.

Sun-Mi.............. Then why did you lie to Cho-Jeh? Do you always make up stories?

Young-Mi.......... Sooner or later, everyone will know, so I'd rather be in control.

....................... But telling everyone I'm a lowly construction worker's daughter, that was really mean of you.

Sun-Mi.............. You started it first. I was only saying the truth. I'm not the sort of person who spreads rumors.

Young-Mi.......... (sarcastically) I know you're very kind. I'd be very kind too if I was lucky enough to have a good father.

....................... Apparently youre like this because of Woo-Jin, but dont worry. I dont want to be your rival...

Sun-Mi turns to walk out, but Young-Mi challenges her...

Young-Mi.......... It's true that youre luckier than me, but Im more tenacious than you ...

Young-Mi.......... Can both of us become announcers?

Sun-Mi.............. I dont know about you, but I can. Like you said, Im lucky.

Ep.02 - Outside Woo-Jin's photography studio building, night

From a concealed position behind the corner of the building, Sun-Mi watches Young-Mi flirt with Woo-Jin...

Young-Mi.......... Ouch... Something got in my eye.

Woo-Jin............ Let me see.

He comes closer and blows at her eye several times.

Woo-Jin............ How is it?

Young-Mi.......... Its OK. Its out now. Much better.

Ep.02 - Inside a cafe, night

After seeing Woo-Jin with interacting intimately with Young-Mi, Sun-Mi calls him out to talk...

Sun-Mi.............. I saw you and Young-Mi walking together. You looked good together with your arms locked.

....................... Have you always liked girls like Young-Mi? Is that why you always blew me off?

Woo-Jin............ Its not like that. Whats the matter with you today? Theres no one that I like or anything.

Sun-Mi.............. Now youre supporting her too... Im just shocked and confused.

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi...

Sun-Mi.............. You really dont know? You really dont know how I feel? Ive always been by your side and

He interrupts, not wanting to get into that discussion with her.

Woo-Jin............ Its late. I have work to do. Lets go. Ill take you home.

Ep.02 - Thames River, night

Joo-Hee............ Wow, you live in a beautiful place.

Hyung-Chul....... Once you live here, its all the same.

Joo-Hee............ You're so unromantic.

When she shivers, he puts his suit jacket over her shoulders.

Hyung-Chul....... If you get sick here, youll be cold down to your bones.

Joo-Hee............ That girl you mentioned before is she doing well?

Hyung-Chul....... You know Im not interested, so why ask?

Joo-Hee............ I think that Ill never see you despairing over love for the rest of my life.

Hyung-Chul....... Despairing?

Joo-Hee............ You've never suffered from an unrequited love?

Hyung-Chul....... Have you?

Joo-Hee............ You dont see it? All the scars on my heart.

He rests her hand on her cheek and pats it lightly.

When he starts to take his hand away, she puts her hand over his and holds it there, but he pulls his hand away.

Hyung-Chul....... Silly words. Im not really sure what love is.

Hyung-Chul....... I dont want to have a shallow love like my father, or put my life into love like my mother either.

....................... They say that sons are like their fathers. What would happen if I got married and had a son like me?

He turns away to look out at the river, and she rests her head against his back.

Joo-Hee............ When I look at you, a coldness comes up from the bottom of my heart.

Ep.02 - Quiet back alley near the photo studio, night

Sun-Mi and Young-Mi are walking to her home, when they are accosted by two ruffians. One of the men grabs Sun-Mi...

Ruffian............. Shall we go somewhere quiet and have some fun?

Sun-Mi.............. Somebody save me!

Ruffian............. Were not going to kill you. Who said anything about killing?

Young-Mi uses her purse and high heel shoe to fight back, knocking the man to the ground...

Sun-Mi.............. What should we do?

Young-Mi.......... Run!

Ruffian............. Get them!

Sun-Mi and Young-Mi run away, with the two men chasing them.

Ep.02 - Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Woo-Jin carries Young-Mi back to Sun-Mi's home to recover from the incident.
Later, Sun-Mi happens to overhear Young-Mi and Woo-Jin talking in her bedroom, and walks in on them embracing.

Faced with the evidence her suspicions about Young-Mi's intentions are correct, she pretends as if it doesn't matter to her...

Sun-Mi.............. You dont have to feel bad because of me ... If you like Woo-Jin, dont hold back because of me.

....................... Woo-Jin and I have known each other for a long time too long

....................... Dont feel sorry for me. You dont have to hesitate.

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi!

Sun-Mi.............. Im sorry I eavesdropped.

Ep.02 - Gwi-Sung's bedroom, Jin home, morning

Gwi-Sung.......... Are you all set?

Sun-Mi.............. All I have to do is get on the plane.

Gwi-Sung.......... Since its just a language session, Im letting you go. If you were actually studying overseas, I wouldnt dare allow it.

Sun-Mi helps him adjust his necktie.

Gwi-Sung.......... I already miss you.

Sun-Mi.............. Me too... Ill study English very hard so dont worry.

Gwi-Sung.......... OK. Youre grown up now. If you need any money ...

Sun-Mi.............. I have enough, dad. If I run out then Ill ask aunt for some.

She laughs, then father and daughter smile and hug.

Ep.02 - Gimpo Airport, afternoon

Young-Mi and Woo-Jin have come with Sun-Mi to the airport to see her off to London.

Woo-Jin............ Dont think so much. Just relax and have fun.

Sun-Mi.............. Do I think too much?

Woo-Jin............ Just a little... Dont be so hard on yourself. Stay happy and healthy. Dont forget to write me, OK?

He gives her a hug.

Woo-Jin............ I'll miss you.

Then Young-Mi returns with some drinks, interrupting their tender moment.

Sun-Mi is apprehensive about leaving Woo-Jin with Young-Mi while she is in England, but can do nothing...

SCENE: Airplane in flight, afternoon

Sun-Mi's Asiana Airlines flight to London ...

SCENE: Airplane cabin, afternoon

(Dialog is in Korean except as noted)

Inside the airplane cabin, Sun-Mi sits in the window seat, gazing out at the clouds, immersed in her thoughts.

Pilot................. (English) This is Captain Park. Were approaching some turbulence, please fasten your seatbelts.

Oblivious to the captain's announcement, Sun-Mi continues to stare sorrowfully out the window, tears rolling in her eyes.

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 2, in Sun-Mi's bedroom]

Sun-Mi comes into her room to see Young-Mi and Woo-Jin together after eavesdropping on their conversation.

Sun-Mi.............. It's OK to like Woo-Jin. Don't hold back because of me. You don't have to.

....................... Woo-Jin and I have known each other for a long time... too long. Don't feel sorry for me...

A flight attendant moves slowly down the aisle, checking the passengers' seatbelts, and comes to Sun-Mi's row...

Attendant.......... (English) Miss, please fasten your seatbelt.

Sun-Mi does not respond... she is still obsessed in her ruminations.

The attendant looks to the woman in the aisle seat next to Sun-Mi, an elderly Korean Catholic nun in habit.

Attendant.......... (to nun) Excuse me.

The attendant leans past the nun, touching Sun-Mi's shoulder to get her attention.

Attendant.......... (English) Miss? Your seatbelt?

Startled out of her reverie, Sun-Mi quickly wipes at her wet cheeks and turns toward the flight attendant.

Sun-Mi.............. What?

The flight attendant, now realizing that Sun-Mi is Korean, switches languages...

Attendant.......... Miss, your seatbelt.

Sun-Mi.............. Oh! ... I'm sorry.

She fastens her seatbelt, and the flight attendant moves on to the next row.

The nun notices Sun-Mi's tears and looks on with sympathy.

Nun.................. Is something wrong, Miss?

Sun-Mi.............. (shakes her head) No. I'm fine.

The nun reaches into her handbag and takes out a small packet of tissues, which she places in Sun-Mi's hand.

Sun-Mi looks at the tissues and smiles sheepishly, embarrassed by the attention she is receiving.

Sun-Mi.............. Thank you, Sister. Was I that obvious?

Nun.................. (smiles warmly) What is your name?

Sun-Mi.............. Jin Sun-Mi.

Nun.................. Such a pretty name! I'm Sister Agnes... You're from Seoul?

Sun-Mi nods.

Sister Agnes...... I teach Philosophy in the Religion Department at Catholic University of Korea, in Bucheon.

Sun-Mi.............. (wide eyed) That's my University! I'm a freshman there.

Sister Agnes...... (amused) What a small world. What's your major, Sun-Mi?

Sun-Mi sits up straighter.

Sun-Mi.............. (proudly) I'm in Broadcast Journalism. Someday, I'm going to anchor the News At Nine on MBS!

The nun smiles slightly at Sun-Mi's confident boasting...

Sister Agnes...... That's an very ambitious goal. How are your studies going so far?

The question cuts Sun-Mi's bravado down to earth, and she lowers her eyes ashamedly.

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) Honestly? I almost failed English. I thought it'd be easy, and hardly studied for the exam.

The nun understandingly pats Sun-Mi's hand.

Sister Agnes...... You're not the only one. Are you travelling to study English?

Sun-Mi.............. (nods) Yes. I'm enrolled in a class at Cambridge, in King's College.

Sister Agnes...... Really? I'm attending a conference at Cambridge's Lucy Cavendish College.

....................... Perhaps we could meet up sometime?

Sun-Mi isn't happy at the idea of a professor from her university keeping tabs on her, on top of her aunt's nosiness.

Sun-Mi.............. Mmm... Thanks, Sister, but I'll probably be very busy.

....................... Besides studying, I'm working at my aunt's restaurant, too.

Sister Agnes...... Does your aunt live in London?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. That's the only reason my Daddy let me come... I don't know anyone else there.

....................... (smiles wistfully) My Daddy's always looking out for me, like I'm still a child.

Sister Agnes...... Finally you smiled. That's a relief...

....................... (sympathetically) You're missing him, right? Your boyfriend?

Sun-Mi is astonished how the nun would know this...

Sun-Mi.............. Huh? ... Who told you...?

Sister Agnes...... When a young woman dresses up for a long flight, either she's left someone behind at the airport,

....................... or she is prepared to meet someone, and you said you knew only your aunt in London...

Then the nun smiles and points to Sun-Mi's wallet stuffed into the seat pocket in front of her...

Sister Agnes...... And you must have looked at those pictures a hundred times since we left Seoul... What's his name?

Sun-Mi opens her wallet and takes out a picture to show the nun.

Sun-Mi.............. Kim Woo-Jin.

Sister Agnes...... And the girl in the other picture?

Sun-Mi looks away and frowns deeply...

Sun-Mi.............. She's Huh Young-Mi, my life savior...

....................... (sighs) It's a long story.

Sister Agnes...... Would you like to tell me about it? There's plenty of time.

Given a sympathetic ear, Sun-Mi dolefully begins her tale...

Sun-Mi.............. It all began the day when my Daddy brought back this girl...

SCENE: London, snooker hall, afternoon

(Dialog is in English except as noted)

Hovering above a green felted snooker table, the cue stick pulls back, and smoothly strikes...

The white cue ball rebounds off three bumpers in turn and pots the targeted red ball into a corner pocket.

Voice................ (O.S. with English accent) Good shot, man!

Hyung-Chul grins across the table at his friend, John White...

Hyung-Chul....... Thanks. Still think you can win our bet?

John................. (smiles confidently) You don't have a chance!

Hyung-Chul....... How was your interview with the BBC?

He chalks his cue as he considers the possible shots.

John................. Didn't I tell you? I landed the internship, and start Monday.

Hyung-Chul....... (laughs) I'm always buying because you're broke. Now you can treat me!

John................. You're always buying because you're always losing! You need to practice more, study less.

Hyung-Chul....... That's about to change...

He circles the table for his next shot.

John................. I thought you had a full schedule this summer.

Hyung-Chul....... Nope. I'm taking a break, just some independent study.

John................. Since when did you ever slack off?

Hyung-Chul....... This way I don't have to be on campus as much.

He braces against the rail and carefully lines up his next shot...

John................. Oh? Avoiding someone?

Hyung-Chul....... Not someone, 'someones' -- those Korean 'Summer English Brats'. Cambridge is crawling with them.

John................. What do you mean?

Hyung-Chul....... Korean kids who come just to have Cambridge on their transcript and a holiday away from parents...

....................... Kind of like Su-Jin, but worse...

He smoothly strokes the cue ball...

Hyung-Chul....... So I decided to concentrate on my game. I won't give up without a fight!

John watches with astonishment...

The cue ball rebounds off the top cushion and kisses the black, potting it into the same pocket as the previous ball.

John................. It's either luck, or you really have improved!

Hyung-Chul....... It's not luck. For once, you'll be paying up, not me...

SCENE: Airplane cabin, afternoon

Pilot................. This is Captain Park. We're beginning our descent to London Heathrow airport.

....................... Flight attendants, prepare for landing...

Sun-Mi.............. Im sorry, Sister. I didn't give you a chance to say a thing, going on and on...

....................... All I do is stew, I'm so frustrated. It's like having a dark storm cloud hanging over me...

Sister Agnes...... (smiles) Don't they say, 'Every dark cloud has a silver lining, and after every storm a clear sky'?

Sun-Mi.............. (grumbling) I dont see what's good about it.

The nun gives Sun-Mi's hand a warm squeeze.

Sister Agnes...... Just think... Otherwise we'd probably never have met. And that would be a great loss.

Sun-Mi.............. But I've only been a burden to you with my complaints.

Sister Agnes...... Since when is making a new friend burdensome? That is, I hope you consider me a friend.

Sun-Mi.............. (smiles) Of course.

Sister Agnes...... So for sure we'll have to meet up in Cambridge, okay? I'd love to talk some more.

Sun-Mi.............. (nodding) I'd like that, too.

Sister Agnes...... Good, then it's set...

Sun-Mi ponders something for a few moments, her curiosity piqued...

Sun-Mi.............. Sister, can I ask you something personal?

Sister Agnes...... Certainly, go on.

Sun-Mi.............. Did you ever have an unrequited love? I mean... before...

The nun chuckles at the question...

Sister Agnes...... In case you're wondering if the convent might be a way to escape a broken heart, think again.

Sun-Mi turns red with embarrassment...

Sun-Mi.............. (coughs) Er... of course not! I was just... asking...

Sister Agnes...... Nuns are people, too with the same hearts and hopes as anyone else.

....................... I didn't run away from something, but to something, a greater love than I'd ever known. God's love.

Hearing that, Sun-Mi frowns doubtfully, thinking again of Young-Mi...

Sun-Mi.............. (complaining tone) If God truly cared, why does he allow evil people in the world to hurt others?

Sister Agnes...... That's a good question. But just as no person is completely good, no one is completely evil either.

....................... Even the worst of us can find redemption and be forgiven.

Sun-Mi nods as if she has heard this before.

Sun-Mi.............. That's what Woo-Jin says, too. But how I can forgive her, if Young-Mi steals him away from me?

The nun looks at Sun-Mi with understanding, before she patiently replies...

Sister Agnes...... You can't force one person to love another. It always takes two to make love work...

....................... It doesn't matter how hard one side tries, when the other isn't willing, it's useless.

Sun-Mi.............. But Woo-Jin has always been by my side. I know we're gonna marry someday.

Sister Agnes...... How do you know that?

Sun-Mi's expression turns resolute...

Sun-Mi.............. (firmly) I believe in True Love! If two people are destined for love, nothing can keep them apart!

Sister Agnes...... You're still young and inexperienced. What if it isn't Kim Woo-Jin, but someone else, who is that person?

Sun-Mi.............. I feel so strongly about Woo-Jin. I'm sure he's the one!

Sister Agnes...... Then why do you worry? If it's really True Love, you said no one can come between you, right?

Faced with that logic, Sun-Mi's has to agree if she doesn't want to contradict herself...

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, but...

She smiles, realizing she is caught in a contradiction of her own making...

Sun-Mi.............. You know, it's weird, getting advice on my love life from a nun.

Sister Agnes...... When we're facing an uncertain world of new opportunities, it can be a bit scary, I know.

....................... The way I see it, you're clinging to something comfortable for support.

Sun-Mi.............. (thoughtfully) I hadn't thought about it like that. So what you're telling me is...?

Sister Agnes...... As Christians, we say, 'this is the day the Lord has made. let us be glad and rejoice in it'...

....................... In Latin they say 'carpe diem' that is, to seize the day... This is your day to seize, Sun-Mi.

....................... So be bold, believe in yourself, and don't be afraid to step out in faith and move forward...

Sun-Mi.............. Thank you, Sister... You've given me something to think about...

Sun-Mi watches outside the window as the plane lands and taxies up to the terminal...

Sun-Mi.............. (thinking to herself) Sister Agnes is right... I'm in a new place, with new people, new opportunities...

....................... Why not 'seize the day' ... take a step forward and see what happens?

To Be Continued...
