Act 3

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, afternoon

(All dialog in this scene is in English except as noted)

Beep- beep-beep-beep-beep ...

Surprised by the interruption, Sun-Mi opens her eyes and looks first at John, then down at the source of the sound.

Beep- beep-beep-beep-beep ...

John................. Sorry, it's my mobile. Hold on.

Beep- beep-beep-beep-beep ...

He takes the phone from his jacket and flips it open. Seeing the number, he chuckles.

Beep- beep-beep-beep-beep ...

John................. (grumbling quietly to himself) Great! Perfect timing.

Beep- beep-beep-beep-beep ...

Sun-Mi is getting annoyed by the continuing ringing.

Sun-Mi.............. Why don't you answer it?

Beep- beep-beep-beep-beep ...

He turns away to speak more privately.

John................. (irritated) What do you want?

Hyung-Chul's voice comes over the phone...

Hyung-Chul....... (O.S.) I'm calling to remind you our wager is up at six p.m. How's it going?

Sun-Mi tilts her head, glancing towards John, her brow wrinkled.

John................. Just fine. I'm working on it.

He glances towards Sun-Mi, and sees that she is staring at him.

Hyung-Chul....... (O.S.) It doesn't look that way to me... I can taste those steaks already.

Figuring it out, John laughs.

John................. This is cheating, you know. Where are you?

He tosses out the bone, as a lure, looking around to check, just in case...

Hyung-Chul....... (O.S.) What are you talking about?

John................. Don't deny it. You're watching, aren't you?

Hyung-Chul....... (O.S.) Meet you at seven, usual place... Bye.

John................. (muttering) That jerk!

He snaps his phone closed and turns back to Sun-Mi.

John................. Sorry about that. Now, where were we?

Sun-Mi doesn't respond, or even look at him.

John................. Sun-Mi?

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry, I gotta go now...

She slings her backpack over her shoulder, grabs up her books, and quickly rises to her feet.

He stands up, too, to stop her...

John................. Hey, what's wrong?

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry...

John................. Did I do something to upset you?

She looks up at him, and he sees her flushed cheeks.

Sun-Mi.............. No. Sorry, my fault.

John................. You don't have to keep saying you're sorry.

She gives him a tepid smile...

Sun-Mi.............. I know, but... sorry...

She turns and hurries off, anxious to get away.

John watches her back, wondering what had caused this sudden turn of events...

SCENE: Cambridge street, outside Darwin College, afternoon

Sun-Mi leaves the Darwin College grounds and starts walking along Silver Street.

She stops at the bridge over the River Cam to catch her breath, leaning on the railing...

Sun-Mi.............. It can't be! The only two guys I know here also know each other? Impossible!

Staring down at the water below, she tries to convince herself...

Sun-Mi.............. Maybe it wasn't Senior on the phone, but someone else?

Then she sighs in desperation...

Sun-Mi.............. I'm such an idiot! ... If Senior tells Auntie what I just did, I'm dead meat!

SCENE: London, snooker hall, evening

THAT NIGHT ...

John................. It was this close, just when you called...

He holds up his hand, with his thumb and index fingers almost touching.

Hyung-Chul....... Then what?

John................. It was like night and day. One moment she was all puckered up, the next like an ice queen.

He shrugs.

John................. She just blew me off and that was it.

Hyung-Chul....... (chuckling) I warned you that Korean women can be difficult and unpredictable.

John................. I know. But this time I thought I could beat the odds.

Hyung-Chul stares into his beer glass, brooding...

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, you should have.

John................. What?

Hyung-Chul....... I have a confession to make. You were right... I was there, and called deliberately to stop you.

John................. Huh? I knew it! ... You jerk!

Hyung-Chul....... Let's just call the bet off, okay? I'll pay up what I owe, if you want.

John gives Hyung-Chul a puzzled look...

John................. First, tell me. Why did you do it?

Hyung-Chul....... Initially, I thought because I didn't want to lose the bet, but actually, because I felt guilty.

John................. Guilty?

Hyung-Chul....... It's wrong, toying with someone's feelings like this.

John................. If that's what you thought, you were mistaken. Sun-Mi was the one making the move, not me.

Hyung-Chul....... Really? Then, why did she run out on you?

John................. It beats me. But that's not my problem now, it's yours.

Hyung-Chul....... Huh? what do you mean?

John................. It's obvious you like her, so I'm backing off. I said before, no woman comes between us.

Hyung-Chul....... Just like that?

John................. Yep, just like that. But I still want those steak dinners you owe me.

He holds out his hand to shake on the agreement.

Hyung-Chul....... Okay, it's a deal.

John laughs...

John................. Good luck, my friend. Something tells me, that with this girl, you're going to need it!

SPLIT SCENE: Seoul, Cho-Jeh's home / London, Sun-Mi's bedroom

Sun-Mi calls her friend Cho-Jeh, to air her troubles...

Sun-Mi.............. It was so embarrassing!

Cho-Jeh............ Are you sure it was him on the phone?

Sun-Mi.............. No... Yes... It sounded like his voice, but I'm not sure.

Cho-Jeh............ Maybe you just used that as an excuse to run away.

Sun-Mi.............. What do you mean?

Cho-Jeh............ You chickened out.

Sun-Mi.............. You think so? ... Did I? ... This is so confusing...

She sighs deeply...

Sun-Mi.............. What should I do next time I see John? Or Hyung-Chul?

Cho-Jeh............ Just smile and act like nothing happened, because nothing did. Let them wonder about it.

Sun-Mi.............. Are you sure?

Cho-Jeh............ Have I ever been wrong before?

Sun-Mi.............. (jokingly) Well, remember that guy you met at the bar last term...

Sun-Mi's remark has Cho-Jeh suddenly in avoidance mode...

Cho-Jeh............ (speaking quickly) Gee, look at the time! I've gotta go. Talk to you later... Bye...

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, morning

THE NEXT DAY ...

After class, Sun-Mi, lost in her thoughts, strolls languidly along the River Cam as other students hurry past.

She can't shake the unpleasant feelings she's had since reading the letter from Woo-Jin and Young-Mi...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 3, Sun-Mi reading the letter from Woo-Jin and Young-Mi]

Walking a little further, Sun-Mi looks across the river at the benches on First Island.

Her cheeks flush again at the reminder of what had -- almost -- happened yesterday.

Sun-Mi.............. (to herself) Maybe Cho-Jeh is right, I just chickened out. So much for 'seizing the day' ...

She glances down at her textbooks, and sighs at the thought of having to study the boring material... alone.

Resigned to the task, she trudges across the footbridge...

SCENE: Cambridge, outside Heffer's Bookshop, morning

On the street outside the bookshop, Hyung-Chul discusses the Cambridge IETLS test with his professor.

(IETLS = International English Language Testing System)

Hyung-Chul....... I got it.

Professor.......... If you've got that, it should be fine.

Hyung-Chul....... I'll send you an email.

He and the Professor shake hands.

Hyung-Chul....... See you later.

Professor.......... Yes, see you again soon.

SCENE: Seoul, outside the apartment building, night

Woo-Jin and Young-Mi and walking together on the street, he is carrying several bags of groceries in his arms.

They approach the entrance of their building, and Young-Mi opens the door for him.

Inside, she takes out her key and checks her mailbox.

Woo-Jin............ Can you check mine, too? The key's in my jacket.

She fishes the keys from his pocket and opens his mailbox. Inside are letters, including one with airmail markings.

Young-Mi sees the sender is Sun-Mi, and surreptitiously slips the letter in amongst her own mail.

Woo-Jin............ Anything from Sun-Mi?

Young-Mi.......... Nope. Just bills.

Woo-Jin............ (concerned) Why hasn't she written?

Young-Mi.......... She's probably having too much fun. Besides, it's only been two weeks.

Agreeing with her reasoning, he smiles...

Woo-Jin............ You're right. Let's have dinner. I'm hungry.

Young-Mi leads the way up the stairs.

Young-Mi.......... I'll cook something delicious for you.

SCENE: Cambridge, inside Heffer's Bookshop, morning

Hyung-Chul is in the bookshop browsing through a copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams...

SCENE: Seoul, Young-Mi's studio, night

Alone in her apartment after Woo-Jin has left, Young-Mi sits at her desk with Sun-Mi's letter in her hands.

Finally, she decides to open the letter and read it...

Sun-Mi.............. (voice over) Dear Woo-Jin, It's just my first day in England, and I'm already missing you...

Young-Mi frowns as she reads on.

Sun-Mi.............. (voice over) It's a bit lonely without you by my side. Remembering the good times we've had helps...

Young-Mi glowers with jealousy.

Sun-Mi.............. (voice over) I know you must miss me, too., so I have an idea. You do believe in telepathy, right?

Young-Mi tosses down the letter onto her desk.

Sun-Mi.............. (voice over) Let's send good thoughts to each other every day. That way, we can feel closer...

Angrily, Young-Mi picks up the letter again and rips it to shreds.

Taking the pieces into the bathroom, she flushes away the evidence...

SCENE: Darwin campus, afternoon

Hyung-Chul leaves Old Granary and heads down steps to the walkway along the River Cam.

Crossing the footbridge to First Island, he stops when he sees Sun-Mi sitting on a bench, studying.

He notices that she has a lunch box of kimbap beside her on the bench...

Recalling John's smooth move in feeding kimbap to Sun-Mi to get closer to her, he resolves to try the same...

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, First Island, afternoon

From the bridge, Hyung-Chul walks over to the bench where Sun-Mi is sitting.

Hyung-Chul....... Aren't you studying too hard?

He sits down next to her.

Sun-Mi looks up from her book and smiles to cover her surprise... wary after yesterday's incident.

She watches Hyung-Chul carefully, looking for any clues that he was the one on the phone with John...

Sun-Mi.............. (nonchalantly) Oh, hello.

Not seeing anything in his mannerism to confirm her suspicions, relieved, she returns to reading.

Hyung-Chul....... What if I'm scared off by your English?

Sun-Mi glances at Hyung-Chul with a mischievous look.

Sun-Mi.............. Then I'll catch you back.

He chuckles at her remark, then looks down at the lunch box on the bench, acting as if surprised...

Hyung-Chul....... Huh? Wow, your aunt packed this for you, right?

He picks up the lunchbox.

Sun-Mi keeps her eyes on her book as she answers...

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. Try some.

He eats a piece.

Hyung-Chul....... Mmm. This is the good stuff.

Sun-Mi.............. (reading from her book, in English)... starts to copy... copy some notes...

Hyung-Chul....... No, no. that's not right. To these people "copy" is "coopy" they emphasize the "o" like that.

He eats another piece of kimbap.

Sun-Mi.............. Yeah, they really do. They pronounce "copy" like "coopy"

Sun-Mi.............. (reading from her book, in English) He starts to copy some notes.

She reaches for some kimbap from the lunch box, without looking.

Finding it empty, she glances into the lunch box, then glares at Hyung-Chul accusingly.

Sun-Mi.............. My lunch!

Hyung-Chul looks down and sees that she is right...

... inadvertently, he had finished off the kimbap, instead of saving the last piece to feed to her ...

Blown off his original plan, he scrambles for a comeback, replying through a mouth full of kimbap...

Hyung-Chul....... Err... sorry. Did I eat that quickly?

He chuckles about the situation, trying to make light of it...

Hyung-Chul....... There weren't that many to begin with.

But Sun-Mi isn't amused, and shows her displeasure to Hyung-Chul with a threatening scowl.

Sun-Mi.............. (irate) No, I only ate two.

Hyung-Chul....... You're so stingy. Even with just food.

Feeling he is being unreasonable to claim that... she launches into a verbal tirade...

Sun-Mi.............. You're calling me stingy? You hit me with your car just because I was thinking!

Her eyes flash at him, steaming with indignation...

Sun-Mi.............. Now you eat my whole lunch too! ... Aren't you overdoing it?

Surprised by her strong reaction, he offers a fig leaf...

Hyung-Chul....... Then I'll pay you back.

She gives him a doubtful look.

Sun-Mi.............. With what?

He thinks for a second, devising a chance to stage a comeback with her...

Hyung-Chul....... Follow me.

He quickly gets up from the bench and walks off, taking a drink from Sun-Mi's juice bottle.

She hurriedly grabs up her bag, and runs after him.

Sun-Mi.............. Wait up!

SCENE: Cambridge, Inside a souvenir shop, afternoon

Hyung-Chul pushes a red cap emblazoned with "Cambridge" and the university shield down onto Sun-Mi's head.

Smiling, Sun-Mi adjusts the cap and pushes back her hair.

Hyung-Chul....... That's pretty.

Pleased as she looks in the mirror, she self-consciously continues to adjust the cap and her hair.

Sun-Mi.............. I don't wear hats much.

Hyung-Chul quickly removes the hat from Sun-Mi's head and handles it as he speaks.

Hyung-Chul....... No. It's for my girlfriend. I was just checking the size.

Sun-Mi gives him a dubious look, thinking ... is he making fun at my expense again? ...

She gets another cap from the rack and puts it on his head, then studies how it looks on him.

Hyung-Chul....... You're copying me, right?

He strikes a smiling pose.

Hyung-Chul....... For your boyfriend, right?

Sun-Mi shakes her head and takes the cap off Hyung-Chul. She looks at the cap as she answers...

Sun-Mi.............. For my dad. I love my daddy.

Hyung-Chul looks from Sun-Mi to the cap, and rests the cap back on Sun-Mi's head.

Hyung-Chul....... The truth is, I don't have a girlfriend. So until then, you can wear it.

He pushes the cap down on Sun-Mi's head.

Sun-Mi chuckles and smiles as she adjusts the cap again.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks for the gift.

Hyung-Chul....... Then this is repaying you for lunch.

Sun-Mi smiles shyly and looks away.

Hyung-Chul....... Oh yeah. Don't you have to get a gift for the person who saved your life?

Unhappy at being reminded of the situation back in Seoul, Sun-Mi frowns...

Sun-Mi.............. Young-Mi?

Seeing the instantaneous change in her attitude, Hyung-Chul realizes that he's put his foot in his mouth, again...

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin Porter's Lodge, afternoon

(All dialog in this scene is in English)

THE NEXT DAY ...

Hyung-Chul enters the Porter's Lodge, going directly to check his mail cubby.

Glancing over at the clerk's counter, he recalls the day he watched Sun-Mi struggle with her English...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 3, Sun-Mi's first day at Cambridge]

Clerk............... What? Speak in English!

Sun-Mi............. (in Korean) If I could speak in English I would.

Nancy notices Hyung-Chul is looking in her direction.

Nancy............... Hi.

Hyung-Chul....... Hi.

He comes over and casually leans on the counter.

Hyung-Chul....... Any mail for my 'cousin' that I can deliver?

Nancy............... (coldly) She was just in here, to collect it herself.

Hyung-Chul....... Is that so?

Nancy............... Funny thing, though...

Her eyes narrow as her voice turns icy...

Nancy............... She says she has no 'cousins', here or in South Korea.

Caught red-handed, he hedges...

Hyung-Chul....... Okay, we're not actually cousins, but being both Koreans, it's like we're related.

She folds her arms skeptically...

Nancy............... You lied to me.

Forced into a corner, he decides to come clean...

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, the truth is, I needed an excuse to meet Sun-Mi and apologize for being a jerk.

Nancy............... (scoffing) I think that's the first honest thing I've heard you say.

Hyung-Chul....... I was saying the truth about your hairstyle, too... Really.

She debates whether to believe him or not, but wants to...

Nancy............... Just don't do anything like that again, okay?

Hyung-Chul....... Sure... Hey, I gotta go. See you later?

Nancy............... (nods) Okay... Bye.

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, First Island, afternoon

Sun-Mi is sitting on the bench at her favorite spot to study and contemplate...

She stares at the unopened letter in her hand, debating with herself whether to open it or not...

Sun-Mi.............. What are you afraid of? Open it. Or are you a chicken about this, too?

She recalls what Sister Agnes told her on the flight to London...

Sister Agnes...... (voice over) We'll have to meet up in Cambridge ... I'd love to talk some more.

She nods as she decides...

Sun-Mi.............. Sister Agnes was so encouraging. I'll talk to her, and get some good advice.

Hyung-Chul....... May I join the conversation, too?

Startled, Sun-Mi jumps... She looks up, to see Hyung-Chul standing by the bench...

Sun-Mi.............. (gasps) You frightened me! Do you always eavesdrop like this?

Hyung-Chul....... Sorry. I didn't want to interrupt.

Sun-Mi.............. (irately) How long were you standing there, listening to me?

He smiles to ease her concern, as he sits down on the bench next to her...

Hyung-Chul....... Don't worry, I just got here. You were talking about Sister Agnes. Who is she?

She is more relieved now, that he still hasn't brought up her incident with John...

Sun-Mi.............. I met Sister Agnes on the flight into London. She's a teacher at my college in Seoul.

Hyung-Chul....... You're going to meet her today?

Sun-Mi.............. Sister said I could stop by any afternoon to talk. She's staying at Lucy Cavendish College.

Hyung-Chul....... That's some distance away from here.

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) Right now, I think a long walk would do me good.

He looks down at the envelope on her lap.

Hyung-Chul....... More bad news?

But she doesn't want to talk about those problems with him...

Sun-Mi.............. (irritated) I should go now... Nice seeing you.

Hyung-Chul....... Wait...

He stalls while he quickly thinks up something to he can spend more time with her...

Hyung-Chul....... I know the way. Why don't we go together?

She frowns, unhappy he is inviting himself along.

Sun-Mi.............. That's not necessary. I'm sure I can find the college myself.

But Hyung-Chul is just getting started. He tilts his head with a boyish grin, raising the ante...

Hyung-Chul....... I could give you that sight-seeing tour I promised. How about it?

As the target of his charm offensive, Sun-Mi's resistance starts melting, but she still holds out...

Sun-Mi.............. (grudgingly) I don't want to bother you...

Hyung-Chul....... It's no bother. Tell you what... I'll throw in a special surprise, too, at the end.

His hint intrigues Sun-Mi, but she is still give a pretense of skepticism...

Sun-Mi.............. Humph! What could be that special? It's just a walk.

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, it's something I've planned specifically for you.

Sun-Mi.............. (flattered) Really? Just for me?

Hyung-Chul....... Yup.

With her curiosity aroused, Sun-Mi presses on...

Sun-Mi.............. Can't you give me a hint? Just a little one?

Now that he is certain has her hooked, Hyung-Chul reels his catch in...

Hyung-Chul....... (teasingly) Sorry, you'll have to wait until we get to Lucy Cavendish to find out.

Belatedly, she realizes that he snared her...

Sun-Mi.............. (laughing) Oh, all right... you jerk!

Sun-Mi and Hyung-Chul enter the Porter's Lodge together.

Porter............... Hello.

Hyung-Chul....... Hi.

Porter............... It's been a while.

Hyung-Chul....... Yes. My friend wants to meet someone staying here.

The porter looks at Sun-Mi.

Sun-Mi.............. Sister Agnes, from South Korea. She's here for a conference.

The porter checks the list of residents...

Porter............... Oh, yes. I can ring her for you.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks.

Porter............... Who should I say is calling?

Sun-Mi.............. My name is Sun-Mi.

Porter............... Just a minute.

The porter picks up the phone handset and punches in a number, then waits for the pickup...

Porter............... Hello... A young woman is here to see you... Sun-Mi... Yes, I'll send her over.

The porter hangs up, and turns to Sun-Mi.

Porter............... Sister Agnes says she'll meet you at Strathaird Hall, where she's staying. I'll give you directions.

Hyung-Chul....... That's okay, I can show her.

Sun-Mi smiles at the Porter...

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks for your help.

SCENE: Cambridge, Lucy Cavendish campus, afternoon

Leaving the Porter's Lodge, they walk back out to the lane, where Sun-Mi sees a campus map.

Sun-Mi.............. You don't need to send me. I'll find my way from here.

Hyung-Chul....... You're sure?

She sighs, tired of his constantly belittling attitude about her abilities...

Sun-Mi.............. I can read a map.

Hyung-Chul....... Sorry. I suppose I'm a little overprotective at times.

Sun-Mi.............. (sarcastically) A little? You don't say?

Then she changes her tone and smiles...

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks for coming with me, and giving me the tour. I had a really nice time.

Hyung-Chul....... I had a nice time, too.

Sun-Mi.............. You know, I was thinking... Maybe what you said is true.

Hyung-Chul....... What's that?

Sun-Mi.............. Three times is charm. I feel lucky that I've met you. Maybe it's not just a coincidence after all...

Her comment surprises Hyung-Chul...

Hyung-Chul....... Huh?

She sees his reaction, and quickly clarifies her intent...

Sun-Mi.............. I mean, I didn't expect to make a Korean friend here in England.

Hyung-Chul....... Oh, sure...

Sun-Mi.............. Well, I have to go now. Sister Agnes is waiting...

But he isn't ready to let her go, just yet...

Hyung-Chul....... How long will it be?

Sun-Mi.............. An hour or so, I suppose.

Hyung-Chul....... Then I'll wait for you.

Sun-Mi.............. There's no need to wait. I can find my way back to Darwin.

Hyung-Chul....... I won't be just waiting. I have something to do, too.

Sun-Mi.............. Here? What could that be?

Hyung-Chul....... Remember that surprise I told you about?

Actually, she'd forgotten...

Sun-Mi.............. Oh... yeah. What is it?

Hyung-Chul....... (teasingly) It's a secret. You'll find out later, when we meet up again.

She affects an air of indifference, hoping to tease him out...

Sun-Mi.............. What if I don't care?

Hyung-Chul....... After you finish with the Sister, just come to the Music Pavilion, here...

He points the location on the map.

Hyung-Chul....... I'll be there, with your surprise. Okay?

She gives up her pretense, resigned to find out later...

Sun-Mi.............. Okay, you win... See ya later.

Sun-Mi starts off, but after a few steps, turns back, and when she sees him watching, smiles.

Hyung-Chul winks back...

Hyung-Chul....... I'll be waiting...

To Be Continued...
