Act 4

SCENE: Cambridge, Lucy Cavendish College, inside Strathaird Hall, afternoon

Sister Agnes is waiting in the reception area when Sun-Mi walks into Strathaird Hall.

Sister Agnes...... Sun-Mi! Welcome...

Sun-Mi.............. Thank you for seeing me today, Sister.

Sister Agnes...... I'm so glad you called. I wanted to meet you before I left England this weekend.

Sun-Mi.............. (disappointed) You're going already? I thought you were staying in London for a few more weeks.

Sister Agnes...... Unfortunately, my plans changed. Is there something on your mind?

Sun-Mi.............. Remember what you said about 'carpe diem', that I should be bold and move forward?

Sister Agnes...... Yes. How is it going?

Sun-Mi.............. I wish I could say things are okay, but...

The nun sees the troubled look in Sun-Mi's eyes...

Sister Agnes...... Is it something about that young man in Seoul?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes... No, it's not just that... (she sighs) Honestly, Sister, I'm really confused.

Sister Agnes...... Why don't we get some tea, find a quiet place to sit, and you can tell me all about it...

SCENE: Cambridge, Lucy Cavendish campus, afternoon

ABOUT AN HOUR LATER ...

Leaving Strathaird Hall after a heartfelt talk with Sister Agnes, Sun-Mi strolls across the Lucy Cavendish grounds.

She enjoys the beauty of the well-tended flowering shrubs and beds, bursting with color.

But as Sun-Mi approaches the library, she hears the sound of piano music from beyond a stand of trees, piquing her interest.

Then she sees the Music Pavilion, where Hyung-Chul had said he'd be waiting for her, with a surprise

SCENE: Cambridge, Lucy Cavendish Music Pavilion, aftternoon

As he plays the piano in the Music Pavilion, Hyung-Chul notices a shadow on the window, then a face peering inside.

Peering through the window of the Music Pavilion, Sun-Mi smiles when she sees it is Hyung-Chul.

She goes over to the open doorway. As she leans in to listen, he invites her inside...

Hyung-Chul....... Jin Sun-Mi, come over here and sing something.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, do you have eyes on the back of your head?

Sun-Mi walks up to the piano.

Hyung-Chul smiles at her, then turns his attention back to the keyboard and continues playing.

She sighs as she puts down her books and leans against the piano, resting her chin on her hand.

Sun-Mi.............. I like it. After hearing English for so long, I miss my home.

Hyung-Chul changes to a upbeat melody.

Hyung-Chul....... (singing) Calling from far across that blue sea...

Sun-Mi listens, marveling at his professional-caliber voice, thinking ... this guy is full of surprises! ...

Hyung-Chul....... (singing) Your face rises like the waves. If you secretly come near to my nervous heart...

Hyung-Chul....... (singing) All my dreams from that forgotten time. One by one I'll...

SERIES OF SCENES: Cambridge, various locations on the River Cam, afternoon, and London, various locations, night

With music and lyrics from Chris De Burgh's 1999 song 'Love of the Heart Divine'...

And he laid her down in a field of corn,
And the sun was on his back,
Up above there was, a clear blue sky,
she held him by the hand,
she had known him since they both were young,
He'd been always in her life,
And the first time that he had kissed her lips,
she knew it deep inside, that this was...

Love of a different world, love of the life,
Love of the ancient ones, love of the heart divine.

Passing by the King's College Chapel

After leaving the Music Pavilion, Hyung-Chul suggests hiring a punt instead of walking back to Darwin College.

As they float down the River Cam, he points out the places they'd visited on their way to Lucy Cavendish.

After passing the Wren Library, Trinity College

Playing around, Hyung-Chul grabs the sides of the punt and rocks it as Sun-Mi, alarmed, protests vigorously.

After passing under the Bridge of Sighs, St. John's College

Teasingly, Hyung-Chul then flicks some water into Sun-Mi's eyes.

Near Clare Bridge, Clare College

Later, a group of tourists passing by in another punt takes their picture and waves.

Approaching Clare Bridge, Clare College

Too soon, they are approaching the Clare Bridge, shortly to be back at Darwin...

After dinner, Hyung-Chul takes Sun-Mi on a personally guided tour of London at night.

Crossing London Bridge

To start, they ride the upper deck of one of London's traditional double-deck red buses to take in the sights.

On a London Street

Later, strolling on a crowded street, they enjoy ice cream cones.

On a London Street

Watching the street buskers perform, Hyung-Chul plays air drums to the beat.

At London's Piccadilly Circus

Sun-Mi waits by the 'Eros' statue in Piccadilly Circus for Hyung-Chul to return with a couple of refreshing beers.

SCENE: London, at the Thames River, night

Returning to the Thames, Hyung-Chul strolls with Sun-Mi along Queen Elizabeth's walk.

Near Haye's Galleria, they stop and lean on the railing overlooking the water...

The lights on the far bank reflect in shimmering bands on the rippling water.

Sun-Mi.............. It's so beautiful. You're lucky you live here.

Hyung-Chul....... Didn't you say you came to London before? This should be familiar to you.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, but each time I see it with new eyes. It's never the same twice.

Hyung-Chul recalls the previous time here with Joo-Hee, and realizes that now he is seeing things with 'new eyes' too...

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, you're right, when you have a different perspective, it does look beautiful.

Sun-Mi.............. This is so nice.

Hyung-Chul....... What else does Jin Sun-Mi like?

Sun-Mi gazes meditatively over the water as she answers...

Sun-Mi.............. Sunrises, sunsets, autumn leaves, ocean waves on the beach, a star-filled sky... the simple things of life...

She glances over at him.

Sun-Mi.............. What do you like, Senior?

Hyung-Chul....... You're happy tonight, aren't you?

Sun-Mi nods, smiling broadly.

Sun-Mi.............. Tonight? Very happy.

Hyung-Chul....... Hold that for a moment.

Sun-Mi.............. Hold what?

Hyung-Chul....... Your smile.

Puzzled, she smiles bashfully.

Hyung-Chul....... No, just like you did a moment ago, when you said you were very happy.

She breaks out in a dazzling smile.

Sun-Mi.............. Like this?

Hyung-Chul....... Good. That's it. Perfect!

He scrutinizes her for several long seconds.

Feeling self-conscious, finally she turns away, blushing...

Sun-Mi.............. That's enough! You still haven't told me what you like, Senior.

He grins, teasing her...

Hyung-Chul....... Okay... Sunrises, sunsets, autumn leaves, ocean waves, a sky filled with stars, things like that...

She punches him on the shoulder in protest...

Sun-Mi.............. Hey, you're copying me... Be serious. Tell me.

Hyung-Chul....... Hmm...

He ponders for a moment, staring down at the water, then looks up at her.

Hyung-Chul....... Most of all, I like to see your beautiful smile...

SCENE: London, outside Sun-Mi's aunt's house, night

Hyung-Chul stops his BMW on the street in front of Sun-Mi's Aunt's home.

Hyung-Chul....... We're here...

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, thanks for the 'treat'. I had a lot of fun today.

Hyung-Chul....... Feeling better?

Sun-Mi nods and smiles.

Hyung-Chul....... Good. You should smile more often. You have a pretty smile.

She looks at him skeptically, wondering if he really means it, or is just joking again.

Sun-Mi.............. I better go in now, I have to get up early to catch the bus...

She reaches for the door handle...

But he is not ready to let her go, just yet...

Hyung-Chul....... Tomorrow morning, let's drive together to Cambridge.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks, but there's no need, you've done enough already.

Hyung-Chul....... It's no trouble, I'm going myself anyway.

Sun-Mi.............. Well

... she'd prefer travelling in his comfortable car to the bus and train, but doesn't want to seem too eager ...

He reaches into the back for the English IELFE study book he bought at Heffer's and shows it to her.

Hyung-Chul....... We can work on your English, put the time to good use. What do you say?

Sun-Mi.............. Hmm... Maybe... But I don't want to impose all the time.

Hyung-Chul....... It's not just for you. I'll enjoy having the company, too.

Sun-Mi.............. (smiling) Okay... Thank you.

Sun-Mi gets out of the car, closes the door, and waits for him to drive off.

Sun-Mi.............. (in English) Goodbye.

Hyung-Chul....... (in English) Good night. Sweet dreams.

She smiles at him, standing at the curb, waiting...

Hyung-Chul....... Go in first.

Sun-Mi.............. It's okay. You go first.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't be stubborn. I insist.

Sun-Mi sighs in exasperation, but gives in, walking to the house. At the door she pauses to wave goodbye.

Hyung-Chul waves back, and she goes inside.

SCENE: London, inside Hyung-Chul's car, night

As he drives off, Hyung-Chul contemplates the unexpected turn of events these past weeks...

Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) What are you waiting for, 'Fate' to drop your 'One True Love' right in front of you?

John................. (voiceover) What about that girl bussing tables? She's cute, and has a nice smile...

Sun-Mi.............. (voiceover) Three times is charm. I feel lucky I've met you. Maybe it's not just a coincidence after all...

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi enters her room, goes over to her desk, and sits down.

From her backpack, she takes out the letter from Seoul, still unopened.

Gripping it in her hand, she stares at it, recalling Sister Agnes's advice...

Sister Agnes...... (voiceover) Perhaps you're trying too hard. Why not try trusting God and putting it all into His hands?

Sun-Mi.............. (speaking to herself) She's right, I'm trying too hard. I can't control what other people think or do.

She puts the letter back into her backpack, and sets it on the floor.

Resting her chin on her arms, she thinks over her day, everything that had happened...

Hyung-Chul....... (voiceover) Let's go to Lucy Cavendish together. I have a special surprise for you.

Hyung-Chul....... (voiceover) Most of all, I like to see your beautiful smile.

She ponders the possibility...

Sun-Mi.............. He's handsome, rich, smart, and talented. He can't really like me... can he?

Then she considers their plans for tomorrow...

Hyung-Chul....... (voiceover) Let's go together to Cambridge. It's not just for you. I'll enjoy the company, too.

She looks over at her textbooks, and sighs...

Sun-Mi.............. Stop dreaming... He's just helping you study... 'Cinderella' doesn't happen in real life...

SCENE: London, Gwi-Sun's kitchen, morning

Sun-Mi at the kitchen table, eating breakfast, when her aunt comes in...

Gwi-Sun............ You haven't left for school yet? You'll be late for the bus!

Sun-Mi smiles like she has a secret...

Sun-Mi.............. Nope. I don't have to leave so early now.

Her unusual manner arouses Gwi-Sun's curiosity...

Gwi-Sun............ Something's up... What aren't you telling me?

Sun-Mi.............. Yoon Hyung-Chul is driving me to Cambridge this morning.

Gwi-Sun............ (surprised) When did this happen?

Sun-Mi.............. Last night, when he brought me back home.

Pleased that her niece is spending time with the handsome young man as she'd hoped, her aunt presses for more...

Gwi-Sun............ This is an unexpected change.

Sun-Mi.............. What do you mean?

Gwi-Sun............ It seems that you like him.

Sun-Mi knows where this is going, and immediately discourages further speculation...

Sun-Mi.............. It's not like that, Auntie! He offered to help me with my English during the drive.

Gwi-Sun............ Whatever... Anyway, you shouldn't go empty-handed. I'll make a lunch for you to take for him, too...

Then she thinks a moment, and reconsiders...

Gwi-Sun............ Better yet, you should make it. After all, he's helping you.

... She believes the old adage, that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach ...

Sun-Mi.............. But there's not time! He'll be here any minute.

Gwi-Sun............ If Hyung-Chul comes first, I'll keep him occupied. You'd better get to work, young lady!

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, noon

LATER THAT DAY ...

Hyung-Chul walks up to Sun-Mi, who is waiting at her favorite bench on First Island by the River Han.

Hyung-Chul....... So what's the surprise you mentioned this morning?

She smiles impishly up at him, making the most of his curiosity...

Sun-Mi.............. Have a seat first, and then I'll tell you.

Hyung-Chul....... This better be good.

He sits down as Sun-Mi takes the two lunch boxes from her backpack.

Sun-Mi.............. Ta-da! ... Our lunch. One for you, and one for me...

She hands him one of the lunch boxes.

He looks at it skeptically.

Sun-Mi.............. Aren't you going to open it and eat?

Hyung-Chul....... (suspiciously) When did you become so generous?

Sun-Mi.............. (peeved) Well, if you're going to be this way, I can take it back any time I want!

She acts as if grabbing for the lunch box, but he quickly moves it out of her reach.

Hyung-Chul....... Hey... I was just kidding.

He opens the lunch box...

Hyung-Chul....... Wow! Your aunt's kimbap again?

Sun-Mi.............. (eagerly) Mmm... Go ahead, try it. Tell me what you think.

She watches him intently as he takes the first bite...

He chews thoughtfully, as if trying to decide whether he likes it or not... then he frowns...

Hyung-Chul....... It's not the same as last time.

Sun-Mi's face falls...

Sun-Mi.............. Is it that bad?

Hyung-Chul....... (acting surprised) Bad? It's terrific... so tasty.

Sun-Mi smiles brightly, pleased that he likes her kimbap.

Then she sees Hyung-Chul's naughty grin.

Sun-Mi.............. You're making fun of me again, aren't you? ... You knew all along!

She glares at him crossly, her lips sulking into a petulant pout...

He immediately drops his grin, and finishes the piece of kimbap, hoping to placate her.

Hyung-Chul....... Honestly, it's really delicious.

But she is still skeptical.

Sun-Mi.............. How did you know? Did Auntie tell you?

Hyung-Chul....... (shrugs) Does it matter?

Sun-Mi.............. (grumbling) I hate it when people go behind my back and keep secrets from me.

Hyung-Chul....... It's no secret. Your Auntie's just being proud of you, that's all.

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) She's always boasting about me, but I'm really not at that level. Sometimes it's embarrassing.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't put yourself down. In this case, reality met expectations.

Sun-Mi.............. You' re not saying that, just to make me feel better?

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, I'm looking forward to the next lunch already...

SCENE: London, outside Hyung-Chul's apartment, afternoon

Returning from Cambridge, Hyung-Chul drives into the car park of his apartment building.

He pulls into an empty space by the stairs to his apartment, and they both get out.

Sun-Mi.............. (jokingly) So these are the infamous stairs that your 'clumsy cousin' supposedly fell down?

They both have a laugh over the 'white lie' he'd told in the hospital after their accident...

Hyung-Chul....... Yeah... Would you like to come in for coffee?

Sun-Mi.............. (smiling) That sounds nice.

Hyung-Chul....... (teasingly) Just be careful on the steps...

SCENE: London, inside Hyung-Chul's apartment, afternoon

Coming into the apartment, Hyung-Chul heads directly for the kitchen to prepare coffee.

Sun-Mi deposits her backpack on the coffee table, and goes over to look out the sliding door.

Sun-Mi.............. (enthusiastically) Wow! Such a great view! Can I go out?

He answers from the kitchen...

Hyung-Chul....... Sure.

She opens the door and steps onto the balcony.

A few seconds later, he joins her.

Hyung-Chul....... Coffee will be ready in a few minutes.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks.

Then she sees his unusual expression...

Hyung-Chul....... Sun-Mi, we need to talk...

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, is something bothering you?

Hyung-Chul....... I have a confession to make... That day we had the accident wasn't the first time...

[Doorbell sounds from O.S.] Ding-dong...

He turns to look back into the apartment...

[Doorbell sounds from O.S.] Ding-dong...

Hyung-Chul....... I'll see who it is... wait here.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, what were you going to say?

Hyung-Chul....... Eh... I'll tell you later.

SCENE: London, at Hyung-Chul's apartment door, afternoon

(All dialog in this scene is in English)

When Hyung-Chul comes to the door, he sees John waiting outside.

Hyung-Chul....... John? Why are you here?

John................. Did you forget? We have a match today.

Hyung-Chul....... (pondering) Oh? ... Yeah...

John................. How about a beer first?

Hyung-Chul....... Umm...

Despite his friend's reluctance, John pushes into the doorway past Hyung-Chul, and starts down the hallway.

Foreseeing dire consequences if Sun-Mi and John meet here, Hyung-Chul tries to forestall it...

Hyung-Chul....... Hey, wait up!

But John keeps walking...

Hyung-Chul....... This isn't a good time...

John................. Is it ever a good time, when you have to eat crow?

SCENE: London, inside Hyung-Chul's apartment, afternoon

(All dialog in this scene is in English, except as noted)

John leads Hyung-Chul into the apartment.

Hyung-Chul....... John... There's something...

John................. I mean, it's one thing to make a bet over a girl, but another to cheat to win.

Hyung-Chul....... John...!

John................. By the way, have you thought about what you'll do if Sun-Mi finds out about our wager?

Sun-Mi.............. (cold voice O.S.) No, but he's about to find out...

Too late, John turns toward the balcony door...

Sun-Mi is standing there, facing them with arms crossed and an angry expression.

John................. Well, if it isn't the girl herself! Hello, Sun-Mi.

Sun-Mi.............. (stiffly) Hello, John.

John glances at Hyung-Chul with a grin...

John................. It didn't take you long to make a move.

Hyung-Chul....... (quietly, with gritted teeth) Shut up, John...

He fumbles for something to say, to salvage the situation...

Hyung-Chul....... Uh... So you two have already met?

Sun-Mi glares at Hyung-Chul, her eyes sparking...

Sun-Mi.............. (angrily, in Korean) 'Met' doesn't begin to describe it!

She crosses the room, marching right up to Hyung-Chul.

John looks on in shock as Sun-Mi swings her right hand back, and slaps Hyung-Chul hard across the face.

Sun-Mi.............. (in Korean) You jerk!

Hyung-Chul....... (in Korean) But I was trying to tell you...

Sun-Mi ignores him as she picks up her backpack from the coffee table.

Hyung-Chul....... (in Korean) Please, I can explain!

Sun-Mi.............. (in Korean) Don't say anything more, because I can't hear it... See ya later! ... Or not...

Shooting another look to kill at Hyung-Chul, she storms out of the apartment...

Dumbfounded, Hyung-Chul just watches her leave.

SCENE: London, outside Hyung-Chul's apartment, afternoon

Sun-Mi hurries out of the apartment building, tears of anger and humiliation blurring her vision.

She pauses at the top of the steps to wipe her eyes clear, before going down.

After passing Hyung-Chul's car, she turns and looks back at the door, to see if Hyung-Chul is following her.

Slipping her backpack on, she chastises herself...

Sun-Mi.............. Idiot! What were you thinking? They were playing a game with you! ... It was all a game...

Determined not to give into more tears, she strides resolutely across the car park, heading for the street...

SCENE: London, inside Hyung-Chul's apartment, afternoon

(All dialog in this scene is in English)

After Sun-Mi leaves, John and Hyung-Chul are stunned, still amazed by her reaction.

John................. Wow! I guess that answered my question...

He glances over at Hyung-Chul, amused.

John................. (jokingly) You were right, Korean women can be pretty difficult and unpredictable.

Hyung-Chul glares angrily at John...

Hyung-Chul....... If you'd just have shut up...

John................. Yeah, and then you'd have this scene at another time and place. You should thank me it's out now.

Hyung-Chul....... (grumbling) Thanks for nothing!

John shakes his head disapprovingly...

John................. So you're just going to let her walk out on you like that?

Hyung-Chul....... What am I supposed to do?

John................. Go after her, of course.

Hyung-Chul....... She doesn't want to hear anything from me. What's the sense in following her now?

John................. Tsst... Why do you think she slapped you, instead of me?

Hyung-Chul....... (puzzling) Because? ... I dont know...

John................. Because she feels you betrayed her, not me. And that tells me she feels something for you.

Hyung-Chul....... You really think so?

John................. I'd wager that... (he laughs at the word) ... Look, I have a lot of experience with women.

Hyung-Chul....... (skeptically) Yeah, English women.

John................. Deep inside, they're all the same. If you care at all about Sun-Mi, even just as a friend, go after her.

Hyung-Chul doesn't need any more urging. As he heads out the door, he calls back to John...

Hyung-Chul....... I'll take a rain check on our match. If I don't come back before you leave, just lock up...

SCENE: London, outside Hyung-Chul's apartment, afternoon

Bursting out the door, Hyung-Chul looks around for Sun-Mi, hoping she hasn't gone too far.

He jumps into his car and takes off after her... From the parking lot, he heads down Dockers Tanner Road.

At Westferry Road, he sees Sun-Mi heading for the bus stop...

He drives up from behind and slows to match her walking speed, but Sun-Mi won't stop, or look at him.

Hyung-Chul....... Come on, I'll send you home.

Sun-Mi.............. (irately) I can send myself home, thank you!

Hyung-Chul....... I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid that this is exactly what would happen.

Sun-Mi.............. (scoffing) Gee... I wonder why! It must have been amusing, seeing me play the fool...

Hyung-Chul....... Okay, I'm sorry. It was wrong not to tell you earlier.

Sun-Mi.............. Wrong? ... How about despicable? Or appalling? Or just plain mean?!

Hyung-Chul....... It wasn't like that... hear me out...

Sun-Mi.............. Don't waste your breath. I can't even look at you now... Just go, and don't bother me anymore.

He sees that she isn't going to change her mind, and is upset at himself for the entire incident...

Hyung-Chul....... (exasperated) Okay... I'm out of here!

Without another glance at Sun-Mi, he jams the accelerator.

Sun-Mi watches as the car speeds off, still as furious as she was leaving the apartment...

Sun-Mi.............. You're a jerk, Yoon Hyung-Chul! A real jerk!

To Be Continued...
