Act 2

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's bedroom, early morning

Sun-Mi sleeps restlessly, tossing and turning in her bed...

She is dreaming about the night she and Young-Mi were attacked by ruffians in a back alleyway...

SCENE: Seoul, Sun-Mi's home, evening

In her dream, Sun-Mi comes out of the downstairs bathroom of her home, drying her wet hair after taking a bath.

She goes up the stairs, intending to grab a towel from the upstairs bathroom to wrap her damp hair in...

At the top of the stairs, she notices that her bedroom door is closed.

Then she hears muffled sound of Young-Mi's voice coming from inside the bedroom, but can't make out the words.

Curious, she goes to the door, to listen...

Young-Mi.......... Woo-Jin, if you keep doing this, my heart will grow weaker.

Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi...

Young-Mi.......... I wanted to be nice to Sun-Mi, hold back for her sake, but I like you too much.

Sun-Mi listens for more, but the room is quiet inside... too quiet.

Wondering what is happening inside, she decides to intervene...

She turns the door handle, speaking as she enters...

Sun-Mi.............. Young-Mi, it's okay to like Woo-Jin. You don't have to hold...

But when she looks into the room, what she sees stuns her into silence...

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's bedroom, morning

Startled, she awakes. Her heart is racing, her breathing labored, her body in a cold sweat.

She realizes that she was dreaming, having a nightmare...

Sun-Mi.............. (to herself) No! It's not possible! ... Woo-Jin would never betray me like that...

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin classroom, morning

The English class is listening to the instructor, David Robinson, wrap up his lecture.

Robinson.......... Tomorrow, we'll look into the problem of split infinitives...

Robinson.......... Read the next chapter and practice exercises on pages 115-120. Any questions?

But Sun-Mi is not listening, staring blankly into space, lost in thought...

FLASHBACK [from her dream that morning]

Sun-Mi opens the door and steps into her bedroom, stunned at what she sees...

Woo-Jin and Young-Mi, together in her bed, under the covers...

Sun-Mi stares at them, not knowing what to say or do, as tears of anguish roll in her eyes.

Then Woo-Jin opens his eyes and realizes Sun-Mi is there...

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi, let me explain.

Sun-Mi.............. There's no need. I know what I see! ... I didn't know you prefer girls who act like this!

Woo-Jin............ It's not like you're thinking.

Sun-Mi.............. (scoffing) Are you saying that she tricked you?

Woo-Jin............ No ... I'm saying that Young-Mi and I love each other.

Sun-Mi can't believe he could desire a promiscuous slut like Young-Mi over a good, faithful girl like herself...

Sun-Mi.............. What? I can't understand a word you're saying! This can't be love, it's totally wrong!

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi... please listen to me...

But she is devastated, heartbroken. Not just that he could betray her, but that he would do it in her bedroom, in her own bed...

Sun-Mi.............. It makes no sense! It's not possible!

Woo-Jin............ But it is... Sun-Mi, it's love... true love...

Robinson.......... Sun-Mi?

Engrossed in her thoughts, she doesn't respond.

Robinson.......... Korean student Sun-Mi?

The student next to Sun-Mi nudges her.

Sun-Mi.............. Huh?

Robinson.......... What is tomorrow' s topic?

Sun-Mi.............. Uh... the lesson?

Robinson.......... Yes.

Sun-Mi.............. Problems with... splitting up?

Several students snicker at her misunderstanding.

Sun-Mi's face turns red with embarrassment.

The instructor has pity on his apparently scatter-brained student.

Robinson.......... That's right. Splitting infinitives. Very good.

He directs his attention back to the entire class.

Robinson.......... That's all for today. Class dismissed.

SCENE: Cambridge, University Social Club, morning

Meanwhile, across the River Cam, at the University Sports and Social Club...

Hyung-Chul and John are in the Club's snooker room.

John watches as Hyung-Chul pots the last ball.

Hyung-Chul....... That's game and match.

John................. I'm not giving up. How about a consolation match?

Hyung-Chul....... Sorry. I'm done for today. Besides, you have an appointment to keep.

John................. What appointment?

Hyung-Chul....... You need to talk to Sun-Mi.

John................. I knew there was an ulterior motive that you wanted to play here, instead of our usual.

Hyung-Chul....... That's right. Her class will be out in a few minutes. Go and meet her.

John sighs...

John................. Do you think she'll even talk to me? She was pretty upset that day.

Hyung-Chul....... It doesn't matter. You need to apologize.

John................. What? Are you her guardian now, or something?

Hyung-Chul....... I just know that it's the right thing to do.

John................. Still... I'm not looking forward to getting slapped, like you were.

Hyung-Chul....... Look, I apologized to Sun-Mi the other night, and everything went fine... er ... more or less, that is.

John................. What are you not saying?

Hyung-Chul chuckles as he recalls...

Hyung-Chul....... A bucket of water dumped on my head first...

John................. What?

Hyung-Chul....... I'll tell you another time. You need to get going, or you'll miss her.

John grins...

John................. Okay, I'll go. But what if she dunks me in the river, first?

They both laugh...

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, morning

Sun-Mi and her Japanese classmate, Noriko, are walking together in the building corridor after class.

Sun-Mi.............. Want to go for lunch, Noriko?

Noriko.............. Sorry, I already made a plan.

Sun-Mi.............. Oh?

Noriko smiles and waves to someone ahead of them.

Sun-Mi follows Noriko's eyes and sees another of their classmates, Jean Paul, waiting by the exit door.

Jean Paul.......... Hi!

Noriko.............. Let's go together.

He takes her books, and she starts off with him, hand in hand, then waves back to Sun-Mi.

Noriko.............. See ya tomorrow!

Sun-Mi.............. Sure, bye.

Sun-Mi sighs as she watches them walk away, feeling sad and lonely.

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin campus, morning

Sun-Mi comes out of Newnham Grange and sees John waiting for her by the bridge to First Island.

She doesn't greet him, just keeps walking.

He calls after her...

John................. Sun-Mi! ... I have something to say.

Sun-Mi stops and turns to face him, looking irritated. She doesn't speak, waiting to hear what he wants to say.

John................. Not here...

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin First Island, morning

John and Sun-Mi are standing next to the bench where she often studies.

John................. Please, let's sit down and talk.

Sun-Mi.............. We have nothing to talk about!

John................. Okay, then let me apologize... What I did was stupid, and wrong. I'm sorry.

Sun-Mi.............. (irately) You think just say 'sorry' makes everything okay?

John................. No... I understand your anger. I deserve it. But I'm really sorry I hurt you.

She appears dubious that he is sincere...

Sun-Mi.............. I believed you're sincere before. I'm not such a fool, I believe you again!

John................. There's nothing foolish about trusting someone. The fool is the person who breaks that trust.

Sun-Mi is feeling agitated, her anger rising...

Sun-Mi.............. (harshly) I think you should go now.

John................. (dejected) If you don't believe me, there's nothing more I can say... Goodbye, Sun-Mi. Take care.

John starts to walk away. He takes a few steps, then stops and turns back.

John................. But there is one more thing...

Though she is angry, she can't restrain her curiosity...

Sun-Mi.............. What?

John................. Though it started out as a game... it wasn't at the end. I really like you, Sun-Mi.

Sun-Mi looks at him, doubtful whether to believe him.

John................. I say that sincerely. I regret that I messed up our relationship. You're a special person to me.

He looks down, staring at his shoes.

John................. If there was anything I could do to fix things I would... But I don't want to burden you...

Sun-Mi shows no emotion, her face is impossible to read.

John................. Well, I've said what I came to say. I'll be going now.

He starts walking away again, dejected.

She watches him go off, as some of the things Sister Agnes told her come to mind...

...'No person is completely good, no one is completely evil either. Even the worst can find redemption and be forgiven' ...

... 'Carpe diem... be bold, and don't be afraid to step out in faith and move forward' ...

Then Sun-Mi starts following after John, her pace quickening to catch up to him.

Sun-Mi.............. John! ... Wait!

He stops, wondering what she wants.

Sun-Mi.............. I want to say one more thing, too.

He turns back to face her apprehensively, expecting a verbal tongue-lashing.

John................. What is it?

Sun-Mi.............. Umm... You really wanna fix things?

His face shows relief, and hope.

John................. (eagerly) Anything you want! Just say it!

She smiles widely...

Sun-Mi.............. You buy the lunch...

SCENE: Cambridge, Rose Crescent McDonalds, afternoon

Sun-Mi stares down at her hamburger and fries. Since they had sat down at the table, she hasn't had a bite.

John is curious about her sudden pensiveness...

John................. You're not eating? I thought you were hungry.

She looks up at him, her expression troubled...

Sun-Mi.............. I need to say something first... I was stupid, and wrong, too.

John................. Look, you don't have to try to make me feel better.

Sun-Mi.............. It's true. I wanted to date you, so to make my boyfriend in Seoul jealous...

She glances away and sighs.

Sun-Mi.............. I can't believe I did that, so childish.

John................. Being dumped is hard. I can  understand how you felt.

Sun-Mi.............. But actually, I really came to like you, too. That why I got so upset.

He is surprised to hear this...

John................. Are you serious? You liked me?

Sun-Mi.............. Uh-huh. You did treat me pretty nice then.

John................. So, you'll forgive me?

She nods.

John................. Is it possible, that we can start seeing each other again?

She shakes her head.

Sun-Mi.............. I don't want a boyfriend right now. But we can be friends...

She extends her hand to him.

John................. Friends? I'd like that...

He grasps her hand, and they shake on it.

SPLIT SCENES: Cambridge, Market Hill, afternoon / Seoul, Cho-Jeh's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi is in a telephone booth at Market Hill, a short walk from Rose Crescent...

Sun-Mi.............. Those two were just playing games with me. I was so embarrassed!

Cho-Jeh is sitting on the edge of her bed, astonished...

Cho-Jeh............ What? ... So what happened?

Sun-Mi.............. I put an end to it, of course!

Cho-Jeh............ You dumped BOTH of them? Are you nuts?

Sun-Mi.............. Cho-Jeh, why does every conversation with you have to end of dissecting my love life?

Cho-Jeh............ Or lack thereof...

Sun-Mi.............. (irritated) It's not funny! What they did really hurt my feelings.

Cho-Jeh............ (jokingly) To catch a real-life Prince, I'd let my feelings get hurt any day!

Sun-Mi.............. Why are you so fixated on having a boyfriend?

Cho-Jeh............ Because what else in life is worth having, besides a hot guy who loves you?

Sun-Mi.............. I can think of a lot of things, but it's pointless talking about this anymore. I'm hanging up...

Cho-Jeh............ Sun-Mi! ... Hey! ...

After hanging up on her friend, Sun-Mi dials another number. She waits for the call to connect...

It rings several times, then goes over to voicemail.

She listens to Woo-Jin's voice on the greeting...

Recording......... This is Kim Woo-Jin's phone. Leave me a message.

Sun-Mi.............. Woo-Jin? It's me... I... I'll call back again. Bye.

Sun-Mi sighs sadly, and hangs up...

SCENE: Seoul, Woo-Jin's living room, afternoon

Woo-Jin and Young-Mi come through the door into his living room. Their hair and clothes are damp from rain.

He is listening to his mobile. Then he closes it, looking dispirited.

Woo-Jin............ That was Sun-Mi. I told you I should have answered it.

Young-Mi.......... What did she say?

Woo-Jin............ Nothing. Just that she'd call back.

She gives him an encouraging smile...

Young-Mi.......... Then it wasn't very important, right?

Woo-Jin............ Yeah. I suppose so. Still... it's strange she hasn't called much, or sent any letters.

Young-Mi.......... She's probably having too much fun. I know I would be, if I was in London.

He nods, his mood lightening.

Woo-Jin............ Yeah. You're right.

Young-Mi.......... I'm hungry. Let's make lunch together!

He smiles...

Woo-Jin............ My mom would scold us if she saw us here alone. She's so old-fashioned, like Sun-Mi.

Young-Mi frowns...

Young-Mi.......... (grumbling) You only care about what your mother and Sun-Mi think.

Woo-Jin............ That's not true.

Young-Mi.......... (scoffing) Really? You're not tied to your mom's apron strings?

Woo-Jin............ I'm my own person. I do what I want!

Young-Mi steps closer to Woo-Jin and rests the palms of her hands on his chest.

Young-Mi.......... Do you want to kiss me?

Woo-Jin............ Now? My mom might be back at any time.

She turns her back to him.

Young-Mi.......... (taunting) See what I mean? ... You're like a little boy, afraid of your mommy.

Woo-Jin puts his hands on her shoulders, and turns her around to face him again.

Woo-Jin............ You're wrong. I'll prove it.

He takes Young-Mi into his embrace, and kisses her passionately on the lips...

SCENE: Cambridge, Hyung-Chul's car, late afternoon

After picking Sun-Mi up at Darwin College, Hyung-Chul is driving his car along Newnham Road, headed for the M11.

She is gazing out the side, brooding...

Hyung-Chul....... How was class today?

Sun-Mi.............. Huh?

Hyung-Chul....... You've hardly said a word. What's on your mind?

Sun-Mi.............. Nothing.

Hyung-Chul....... Meaning, you're worrying about what's happening in Seoul, right?

Sun-Mi.............. How did you know?

Hyung-Chul....... How could I not? Your face shows everything you're feeling.

Sun-Mi sighs...

Sun-Mi.............. Why are relationships so complicated?

Hyung-Chul....... Because we make them complicated.

Sun-Mi.............. How about you? That girl who called. You said she's not your girlfriend, but it's not that simple, right?

Hyung-Chul....... How did you know?

Sun-Mi.............. (teasing) Your face shows everything, too.

He laughs.

Hyung-Chul....... You're copying me again, right?

Sun-Mi smiles impishly...

Hyung-Chul....... Okay. We were betrothed as children by our parents who were business partners, but broke it off.

Sun-Mi.............. It's hard to believe people really still arrange marriages these days. Marriage should be for love only.

Hyung-Chul....... My feelings exactly. We're like brother and sister, growing up together...

He reflects on his troubled past...

Hyung-Chul....... Maybe we knew each other too well.

Sun-Mi.............. That's like me and Woo-Jin, growing up together. We know everything about each other, too.

Hyung-Chul....... Being so close to someone, you can't see them clearly anymore. Only the past they remind you of.

Sun-Mi.............. Do you think it's why Woo-Jin likes that girl?

Hyung-Chul....... Because it's something different, it can seem exciting and attractive.

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) You're right. There's nothing exciting or attractive about me.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't say that. Your smile is pretty.

Not wanting to talk about this subject any longer, she changes the subject...

Sun-Mi.............. Oh... Today I met with John. We had lunch together.

Hyung-Chul....... What did he say?

Sun-Mi.............. He apologized. He's really a sweet guy, after all.

Hyung-Chul....... Then you're not angry with him anymore.

Sun-Mi.............. Nope. Actually, I'm considering dating him again... What do you think?

She glances at Hyung-Chul out of the corner of his eye to gauge his reaction...

Hyung-Chul....... Huh?...What are you thinking?

Sun-Mi smiles, letting him know she wasn't serious...

Sun-Mi.............. Of course I'm just teasing. I told you I won't  date anyone right now, remember?

He exhales and grins with relief...

They go through the roundabout on Barton Road, then accelerate on the M11 ramp, merging into the southbound traffic to London.

SCENE: Outside Sun-Mi's aunt's house, evening

Hyung-Chul pulls into the driveway of Gwi-Sun's house, and Sun-Mi alights from the car.

But she doesn't go in right away, instead lingering to talk...

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks again, Senior, for driving me every day. I really appreciate it.

Hyung-Chul....... Can you do me a favor too?

Sun-Mi.............. What is it?

Hyung-Chul....... This Saturday, I'm planning a day trip to Dover, on the Channel. Can you come?

This interests Sun-Mi, but she wants to clarify the situation first...

Sun-Mi.............. Who else is going?

Hyung-Chul....... Hmmm... I invited all my best friends.

Sun-Mi.............. Everyone?

Hyung-Chul....... (jokingly) Yeah, John and you.

She smiles, anticipating getting out of London for a change...

Sun-Mi.............. Okay. It sound like a fun time.

Then she gives him a wary sideways glance.

Sun-Mi.............. Who's driving? John's car can break down any time, and I won't ride in your boot!

Hyung-Chul laughs... and Sun-Mi realizes that she's been had...

Sun-Mi.............. (irritated) Hey! Are you making fun of me? ... I can change my mind any time, you know!

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, John said he's busy, and can't make it. You will still come, right?

Sun-Mi smiles and nods...

To Be Continued...
