Act 3

SCENE: London, Outside Gwi-Sun's house exterior, morning

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's bedroom, morning

Sun-Mi is trying to study on a bright Sunday morning, but her mind is elsewhere.

Music plays from a portable radio on her desk. The song ends and the program announcer comes on...

Announcer........ That was George Michael's "You Have Been Loved"...

Sun-Mi reaches for a different textbook.

Announcer........ You're listening to BBC Radio 2, "Sunday Love Songs" and I'm your host, Steve Wright...

Sun-Mi flips through the textbook and lays the book flat on the desk.

Steve Wright..... Next up, a request by Janice from Surrey, who wrote: "Please play a song for Johnnie, the love of my life.

....................... He's just shipped out on deployment and I'm already missing him dearly."

Sun-Mi yawns and idly turns a page.

Steve Wright..... Janice's song for you, Johnnie, is Laura Fygi's "If It Takes Forever, I Will Wait For You."

The song starts playing...

Song lyrics........ If it takes forever, I will wait for you, for a thousand summers I will wait for you...

While Sun-Mi listens, her mind wanders to the good times she had with Woo-Jin, before Young-Mi intervened...

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 1]

Woo-Jin........... How do you feel being a college kid?

Sun-Mi............. I'm not a kid anymore. I'm a college woman now. What's better is that I can stay out late with guys.

Song lyrics........ Till you're back beside me, till I'm holding you, till I hear you sigh here in my arms...

Sun-Mi sighs, checking her watch and calculating the time in Seoul, imagining what Woo-Jin is doing now.

Song lyrics........ Anywhere you wander, anywhere you go, every day remember how I love you so...

She gazes out the window into the garden outside.

Song lyrics........ In your heart believe what in my heart I know, that forevermore I'll wait for you...

Sun-Mi.............. (jealously) They're probably all having a good time together, eating dinner in the garden...

Song lyrics........ The clock will tick away the hours one by one...

Sun-Mi.............. Young-Mi sitting in my chair...

Song lyrics........ And then the time will come when all the waiting's done...

Sun-Mi.............. And everyone is raving over her 'fantastic' cooking skills...

Song lyrics........ The time when you return and find me here and run straight to my waiting arms...

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) And afterward Woo-Jin will walk her home.

Song lyrics........ If it takes forever, I will wait for you, for a thousand summers I will wait for you...

Tears of frustration spring into her eyes...

Sun-Mi.............. Why is it her, and not me!

Song lyrics........ Till you're back beside me, till I'm touching you...

Sun-Mi.............. I was always beside him, and then she just waltzes in and steals him away...

Song lyrics........ And forevermore, for evermore, for evermore, I will wait for you.

She wipes at her eyes, and her face takes on a determined resolve as she vows...

Sun-Mi.............. I'll win him back... I swear, I'll do whatever it takes!

The song ends.

Steve Wright..... More dedications coming in a few minutes.

Sun-Mi picks up the box containing the watch she bought for Woo-Jin.

Female Voice.... Next Saturday on the BBC...

Sun-Mi turns down the volume on the radio and opens the box.

Taking out the watch to admire, she imagines Woo-Jin's expression when he sees the gift she'd worked so hard for.

She puts the watch down and begins to write in her notebook, thinking aloud as she composes what to say...

Sun-Mi.............. I bought this for you, hoping we might have the rest of time together.

She draws a line through the words, her brow wrinkling as she concentrates...

Sun-Mi.............. Whenever you wear this, think about all the good times we had...

She jabs the pen at the paper and strikes an "X" across the words as she shakes her head.

Sun-Mi.............. No, no, no!

Frustrated, she taps the pen against the paper, and checks the time on he watch again.

Inspiration lights up her eyes as she writes out her idea...

Sun-Mi.............. Whenever I looked at my watch, I calculated the time in Korea out of habit and thought of you...

She draws several lines under the words and smiles widely...

Sun-Mi.............. Yes! He'll know what I mean.

SCENE: London, Snooker hall, morning

(All dialog is English)

John is cueing up as Hyung-Chul watches from across the table.

Hyung-Chul....... Thanks for taking Su-Jin off my hands the past few days.

John................. My pleasure. We hit it off fine, once we'd squared things up, that is.

With a sharp ball-on-ball crack, he drops the last red ball in a pocket and sets up his next shot.

Hyung-Chul....... Nice shot... What things?

John................. She was suspicious of the switch, and challenged me on it.

Hyung-Chul....... And?

John................. (smiling) Turns out honesty IS the best policy. It looks like I'll have that summer fling after all.

He chalks up and leans over the table to eyeball his next shot.

Hyung-Chul....... But isn't Su-Jin flying back to Seoul tomorrow?

John................. She's changed her mind, plans to stay on for a few more days.

Hyung-Chul is surprised...

Hyung-Chul....... To spend more time with you?

John lines up his cue as he answers affirmatively...

John................. I told Su-Jin that I could show her a good time.

Hyung-Chul....... What kind is that?

John................. (grinning) You know me. I'm not the type to kiss and tell...

With a soft touch of the cue tip, he sends the cue ball slowly across the felt, neatly potting the last ball...

He looks up at Hyung-Chul, triumphant...

John................. That's game. Looks like I win again...

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's aunt's kitchen, afternoon

Sun-Mi and her aunt are having lunch together.

Gwi-Sun............ You were studying in your room all morning? How is it going?

Sun-Mi.............. I'm still working on the written exam essay, and haven't even started the 3-minute talk yet.

She sighs deeply...

Sun-Mi.............. Why is English so hard? I'll be lucky to get a 'C'.

Gwi-Sun............ Your Dad wouldn't like me to say this, but grades aren't everything. I got my share of 'C's too.

Sun-Mi.............. Really?

Gwi-Sun............ Instead of just studying, I had many interesting experiences, and made good friends, so I didn't regret it.

Sun-Mi.............. I feel the same, Auntie, about being here.

Gwi-Sun............ I'm glad you and Hyung-Chul hit it off.

Sun-Mi laughs...

Sun-Mi.............. Who knew getting knocked down by a car would turn out so well?

Gwi-Sun gets up and starts clearing the table.

Gwi-Sun............ I need to be going. I'm closing tonight, so you'll have to make dinner for yourself.

Sun-Mi.............. Don't worry, Auntie, I'll manage. You don't have to fuss over me.

Gwi-Sun gives Sun-Mi a fond smile.

Gwi-Sun............ I know, but soon you'll be back in Seoul, and I won't have anyone to fuss over.

Sun-Mi.............. When I came here, I felt a bit sad about leaving Seoul.

Gwi-Sun............ You were homesick?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, but now I think I'll be homesick for London. I'm going to miss you, Auntie, so much...

She gets up and gives her aunt a hug...

Gwi-Sun............ I'll miss you too...

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi stretches and yawns. Unable to concentrate, she checks her watch and frowns...

She picks up the picture of herself with Woo-Jin and gazes at it wistfully, sighs, and puts it back on the desk.

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 2, in the Seoul airport]

Woo-Jin gives Sun-Mi a hug before she boards the plane for London.

Woo-Jin........... Don't think so much. Just relax and have fun.

Sun-Mi............. Do I think too much?

Woo-Jin........... Just a little... Don't be so hard on yourself. Stay happy and healthy. Don't forget to write me, OK?

Sun-Mi.............. (aloud to herself) Should I try calling again?

She reaches for the phone, then thinks... what if Young-Mi answers? ... and puts the handset back on its cradle.

Despondent, she muses to herself...

Sun-Mi.............. How can I relax, when you're alone with that witch?!

Thinking about Woo-Jin and Young-Mi brings tears to her eyes, which she impatiently wipes away...

Sun-Mi.............. Stop being a crybaby! Tears won't resolve anything.

Her thoughts turn to Hyung-Chul...

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, I wish you could be here right now, cheering me up!

She looks at the phone again, thinking to call him instead...

Sun-Mi.............. It's late, why would he want to chat about my problems?

She sighs and picks up her coffee mug, looking into it. The mug is empty.

Sun-Mi.............. I might as well go to sleep, for all I'm accomplishing now.

SCENE: London, Gwi-Sun's backyard, night

In the backyard, Hyung-Chul sits at the patio table, looking up at Sun-Mi's bedroom window.

In his hand he holds a single red rose.

Hyung-Chul....... (aloud to himself) Jin Sun-Mi, are you crying over your problems tonight?

He takes out his mobile, thinking to call her, then grins sheepishly and instead puts it back in his pocket.

Hyung-Chul....... It's late, and you're busy studying. Why would you want to chat with me?

He holds up the rose, gazing intently at it.

Hyung-Chul....... What am I going to do with you now? If I leave you at the door anonymously, she'll think it's a mistake.

As he looks up at Sun-Mi's window again, the light goes out.

Frustrated by his indecision, he stands to leave.

But first, he wrinkles his brow, concentrating as he speaks...

Hyung-Chul....... Good luck on your exams. I'll be cheering you on ... Sweet dreams, Sun-Mi...

SCENE: London, Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi is lying in bed, unable to sleep from worrying, when she hears a quiet murmur saying her name.

She sits up in the bed, looking around the darkened room, puzzled.

Sun-Mi.............. (aloud to herself) Who's there?

She thinks about the voice, who it might be...

Sun-Mi.............. Senior?

Sun-Mi goes to the window, looks into the backyard. Opening the window, she sticks her head out to see better.

The patio is empty. She can see no one.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior? ... Don't play games. Come out if you're there.

She chuckles at the ridiculousness of her suppositions.

Sun-Mi.............. Why would he be here, so late? I must be hearing things in my imagination.

She closes the window and returns to bed.

As Sun-Mi lays awake, she ponders the alternative...

Sun-Mi.............. Could it be telepathy?

She smiles at the unlikelihood...

Sun-Mi.............. No way... We don't have that kind of relationship...

She sighs and rolls over.

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin College classroom, afternoon

Sun-Mi stands in the front of the English conversation class, giving her three-minute talk.

Sun-Mi.............. So the education very important in Korea, not just for gain knowledge, but teaching how to ... to...

She coughs nervously...

Sun-Mi.............. how to become the better person... and... er... er ...

She glances down at the papers in her trembling hands, for what she'd written next.

From the back of the room, Professor Robinson points to his wrist watch, signaling her time is almost up.

Sun-Mi nods she'd gotten the message and wraps up her talk, unhappy with her presentation...

Sun-Mi.............. I ... er ... I try to share with all you a little about Korea society. Thank you for listen.

She bows as the class applauds politely.

Robinson.......... Well done, Sun-Mi. You may sit down now.

Returning to her seat in the circle, Sun-Mi looks at her friend Noriko, showing her disappointment.

But Noriko smiles back encouragingly, giving Sun-Mi a positive thumbs up.

Robinson.......... Kate, will you give your talk nest?

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin College campus, afternoon

(All dialog in this scene is in English)

After class, Sun-Mi leaves with Noriko.

Sun-Mi.............. Jean-Paul doesn't coming?

Noriko.............. He going to Professor Robinson's office now. We'll meet up later.

Sun-Mi.............. Oh... I see.

Noriko.............. I'm so happy this class finish. No more study!

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. But it feels sad, 'cause I made some good friends.

Noriko.............. Me too. But not miss Professor Robinson!

Sun-Mi.............. Yes... He's so boring!

They both laugh.

Sun-Mi.............. When you are flying to Tokyo?

Noriko.............. I go Paris first. Stay one week, with Jean-Paul, for sightsee. How about you?

Sun-Mi.............. I'm leaving tomorrow. Back to Seoul.

Noriko stops walking.

Noriko.............. Now I gotta go to dorm, for packing up. What your gonna do?

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) I still have shopping, for a gift.

Noriko.............. Okay. Then, see you later...

Sun-Mi gives Noriko a hug.

Sun-Mi.............. Let's keep in touch, okay?

Noriko.............. I send you the picture from Paris.

Sun-Mi.............. (smiling) I'd like that. You have my email, right?

Noriko.............. (nods) Yes...

She waves as she walks off.

Noriko.............. Goodbye, Sun-Mi.

Sun-Mi waves back...

Sun-Mi.............. Bye.

SCENE: Cambridge, Darwin College First Island, afternoon

Instead of going shopping immediately, Sun-Mi detours across the bridge to First Island.

She reminisces about the day she was studying here, and Hyung-Chul ate her lunch...

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 3]

Sun-Mi.............. My lunch! You ate them all!

Hyung-Chul....... You're so stingy. Even with just food.

Sun-Mi.............. You're calling me stingy? You hit me with your car just because I was thinking!

....................... Now you eat my whole lunch too! ... Aren't you overdoing it?

Hearing footsteps approaching, she looks up...

Hyung-Chul....... Here you are!

Sun-Mi.............. I wanted to sit here one last time before I left Cambridge.

Hyung-Chul....... What's with the long face? Sad about leaving?

Sun-Mi.............. I'm ready to go home, but part of me wants to stay, too.

Hyung-Chul....... How did your exams go?

Sun-Mi.............. Hard to say. I think my essay was okay, but not my 3-minute talk.

Hyung-Chul....... Oh?

Sun-Mi.............. I kept forgetting what to say, I was no nervous! So I ran overtime, and didn't finish.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't think anything of it. The ESL Profs never fail anyone, even if all they do is show up for class.

Sun-Mi.............. (sighs deeply) Still, I'd hoped to do well...

Hyung-Chul....... This is your last day. You should spend it doing something fun, not worrying about school.

Sun-Mi.............. That's a good point. But... what to do?

Hyung-Chul....... I have an idea.

He stands up.

Hyung-Chul....... Come with me...

SERIES OF SCENES: Cambridge, Various locations, afternoon

With music and lyrics from James Taylor's cover of Carol King's 1971 song, 'You've Got a Friend'.

When you're down and troubled

And you need some love and care

And nothing, nothing is going right

Close your eyes and think of me

And soon I will be there

To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name

And you know wherever I am

I'll come running, to see you again

Winter, spring, summer or fall

All you have to do is call

And I'll be there, yes, I will

You've got a friend

You've got a friend

Cambridge University Botanic Gardens

From Darwin College, Hyung-Chul and Sun-Mi tour the University Botanic Gardens, founded in 1762.

The grounds cover 16 hectares (40acres) and includes a lake and glass houses for tropical plants.

A focal point of the grounds is the fountain by David Mellor, installed in 1970.

The bronze sculpture consists of seven large discs like giant water lily leaves.

The garden has a collection of over 8000 plant species and is used for ongoing research.

It is one of the largest University-owned botanic gardens in the world, with a library holding over 8000 volumes.

JESUS GREEN

They return to the university to walk the expansive greens.

RIVER CAM

Of course, no day is complete without punting the river through the College Backs...

SCENE: Cambridge, Outside Brown's restaurant, night

To wrap up their final day in Cambridge, Hyung-Chul takes Sun-Mi to dinner at this popular establishment.

SCENE: Cambridge, Inside Brown's restaurant, night

Hyung-Chul....... All right, a toast in honor of our last meal in London. Cheers!

He holds up his wine goblet and Sun-Mi brings hers against his with a clink of crystal.

Sun-Mi.............. Cheers!

She takes a sip from the goblet and looks around the restaurant.

Sun-Mi.............. Isn't this too elegant?

She looks at Hyung-Chul mischievously and jokes...

Sun-Mi.............. We could've just eaten hamburgers.

Hyung-Chul smiles.

Sun-Mi.............. In any case, thanks for being my friend.

She puts her hand to her temple in a mock salute.

Sun-Mi.............. You did a good job.

Hyung-Chul....... (chuckling) Stop fooling around.

Sun-Mi.............. At first, when the car accident happened, I thought I was so unlucky.

....................... But meeting you was a pretty good thing

She takes a bite of meat.

Hyung-Chul....... (sarcastically) You're so generous.

Sun-Mi laughs.

Hyung-Chul....... In any case, did your English get better?

Sun-Mi.............. My English didn't get much better, but my heart is much stronger. Thank you very much.

....................... Whenever I was sad you comforted me and bought me drinks.

She smiles...

Sun-Mi.............. You also listened to my complaints.

Hyung-Chul is looking down as he cuts a piece off with knife and fork.

Hyung-Chul....... It wasn't a meaningless time for me either.

He looks up at her.

Hyung-Chul....... I learned a lot from watching you.

She smiles happily at his words, and takes a sip of wine.

Sun-Mi.............. Umm... Delicious.

He speaks as he continues cutting his food.

Hyung-Chul....... I think all you learned is how to drink. You'll get scolded by your mom.

Sun-Mi looks uneasy, then takes a bite.

Sun-Mi.............. I don't have a mom. I didn't tell you?

Hyung-Chul looks at Sun-Mi, as if surprised to hear this.

She looks away.

Sun-Mi.............. You don't have to look at me like that...

She continues thoughtfully...

Sun-Mi.............. Having my father is enough... I've honestly never thought I was missing anything.

He nods agreeably.

Hyung-Chul....... That's fortunate.

Sun-Mi.............. There are times when I want to see my mother. It isn't really fortunate.

Hyung-Chul....... I think it's fortunate to be able to love your parents.

....................... There are many people who hate their parents. Sun-Mi, you're lucky.

Sun-Mi is watching Hyung-Chul, wondering why he would say that.

Hyung-Chul....... Be good to your father and take care of that person who cared for you.

She looks down uncomfortable from his intrusion into her personal relationships.

Hyung-Chul....... That guy may have done everything he could for you. Also be nice to your neighbor.

She nods and looks off, distressed and confused...

Sun-Mi.............. I don't really know. There's no reason he'd do this to me.

....................... But even when I think there must a misunderstanding, I can't decide.

Hyung-Chul....... It's sad to be rejected, but it's sadder when you don't say everything you want to.

....................... Try telling him how you really feel.

She nods at this advice, and forces a smile.

Sun-Mi.............. I'll try to have the courage.

Hyung-Chul....... Speak from the heart, then it'll work out.

Sun-Mi smiles sheepishly...

Sun-Mi.............. I can say I will, but the truth is, I'm scared. What will come up when I go to Seoul?

She wrinkles her brow.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm worried and afraid.

He takes in a deep breath.

Hyung-Chul....... Have courage...

He picks up his wine goblet for a toast to encourage her...

Hyung-Chul....... Here! Yes, a toast to a better tomorrow.

Sun-Mi picks up her goblet.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, a toast to a better tomorrow.

Hyung-Chul and Sun-Mi touch their wine goblets, then each takes a sip and smiles at the other.

To Be Continued...
