After Young-Mi’s collapse, Hyung-Chul holds her in his arms. Their eyes lock, and the message she sends to him is unmistakeable.
Temptation flares... after all, Young-Mi is a beautiful, sensual woman... and apparently willing...
But prudence prevails, and he lets the moment pass without acting on it...
He releases his hold on Young-Mi's shoulders and backs off. If Young-Mi is disappointed that her ploy failed, she doesn't show it.
Young-Mi .......... Thank you. I think I’m much better now.
Hyung-Chul gets up, and helps Young-Mi to her feet.
Hyung-Chul ....... It’s not good to be so careless after a surgery. Please go home and get some rest.
Young-Mi .......... (meekly) Yes, I will. Thank you for today.
Hyung-Chul ....... (nods) Sure. Be careful.
Young-Mi .......... OK.
Young-Mi turns and walks toward the door to leave the apartment.
After leaving Hyung-Chul's apartment, Young-Mi pauses in the stairwell. She smiles, feeling she's another step closer to Hyung-Chul.
Her scheme is working out exactly as she’d hoped.
After Young-Mi is gone, Hyung-Chul takes a cold shower, letting the icy water cool the heat she had raised in him.
But the pictures his eyes had automatically seared into his memory in that moment continue to haunt him...
FLASHBACK
|
He recalls his strange dream about Young-Mi, and wonders if what happened tonight was by chance, or fate?
Is this like the day he ran into Sun-Mi with his car, the beginning of a momentuous change in his life?
Woo-Jin is watching an old tape of Young-Mi’s newscast on a TV monitor in the editing room.
Sun-Dal............. (on the monitor) This is MBS news for Thursday evening. The coup attempt in Fiji ...
Establishment shot of the MBS Yeouido studios building in the morning of another day.
Sun-Mi is being interviewed by meeting a reporter and cameraman in the lower level lobby.
Sun-Mi.............. I survived the crisis because the reaction from the audience was good. It’s pretty embarrassing actually.
....................... As a news presenter, I should not have expressed my personal feelings on air. It was an unforgivable mistake.
....................... So embarrassing!
Reporter........... (smiles) However, it really had a positive effect on the viewer ratings. Is that how you always act?
Sun-Mi.............. Yeah, I’m not good at hiding my emotions. I should fix it, but it’s not working well. (laughs)
Reporter........... Also, I heard that you’re continuing to do the 7 o’clock news.
Sun-Mi.............. (nods) Yes.
Young-Mi is standing in the office doorway, when Jin-Soo and Ki-Jong walk in, discussing Sun-Mi’s situation.
Jin-Soo............. Wow, Sun-Mi. At this rate, won’t she also take the 9 o’clock news?
Ki-Jong............. Sun-Mi’s doing another interview. How many has she had now?
Jin-Soo............. It’s her sixth one. Five for newspapers and one for the company gazette.
Young-Mi walks over to her desk.
Ki-Jong............. How to you know so precisely?
Jin-Soo............. Well I told her that she had to treat me for each one. I added it all up and there were six tickets for the cafeteria.
Ki-Jong............. (expression) Scary.
Young-Mi loudly crumples up a piece of paper. Hearing the noise, Ki-Jong glances over at Young-Mi curiously.
Young-Mi appears self-conscious, and gets up to leave the room.
Ki-Jong............. (to Jin-Soo) Work hard, or you might get crumpled.
Ki-Jong moves his hand as if crumpling paper.
Getting the hint, Jin-Soo looks over to where Young-Mi left.
Sun-Mi is concluding her interview with the reporter.
Sun-Mi.............. Thank you very much.
Reporter........... Thank you for letting us interview you.
Sun-Mi.............. I must go now.
Reporter........... Bye.
Sun-Mi gets up and starts to walk away.
Meanwhile, Young-Mi had been waiting a short distance from Sun-Mi, watching the interview.
When Sun-Mi sees Young-Mi, she pauses momentarily, looks at Young-Mi, then starts to walk by.
Young-Mi........... Don’t you have any modesty?
Sun-Mi stops.
Young-Mi........... Don’t you know how embarrassing that was?
Sun-Mi turns to face Young-Mi.
Young-Mi........... (sarcastically) An announcer getting interviewed over a mistake like that?
....................... I would have turned down those interviews. Go figure. This isn’t the first time you’ve confused me.
....................... You have such amazing luck. You’re the first person I’ve seen with so much good luck.
....................... Even after making a mistake it worked to your benefit. How the heck can I block your good luck?
Sun-Mi.............. (coldly) Your face is kind and pretty when you don't say anything.
....................... If you want to be lucky, then set your heart in the right place.
Young-Mi........... No. I don’t want to be lucky. Just don’t bother me.
Sun-Mi.............. (smugly) Sorry, I need to get ready for the 7pm news.
Sun-Mi walks away. Young-Mi seethes as watches her leave.
Young-Mi is crying in one of the classrooms, when Joo-Hee happens by and sees her.
Joo-Hee............ Stop it, Young-Mi! What will change if you cry? I couldn’t help with the Sun-Mi situation.
....................... While you were in the hospital, I put aside my pride to help you out.
....................... I couldn’t stop Sun-Mi from doing the 7 o’clock news. I’m not to blame for that, right? Let’s just forget it.
Young-Mi........... I think I would’ve gone crazy if it weren’t for you.
Joo-Hee............ Huh Young-Mi!
Young-Mi........... Yes. I understand. I should forget it.
Joo-Hee............ Yeah. Cheer up.
Young-Mi........... Yes.
Joo-Hee............ I have top go get my makeup done.
Young-Mi........... Go ahead.
Joo-Hee puts her hand on Young-Mi’s shoulder.
Joo-Hee............ They say there’s always a new chance.
Joo-Hee pats Young-Mi’s shoulder.
Joo-Hee............ Something will come up.
Young-Mi........... Thank you.
Joo-Hee walks away.
Young-Mi........... (aloud to herself) I see how it is. “I have to do the 9 o’clock news” is what you meant.
....................... If you had done things properly this wouldn’t have happened.
....................... (frustrated) Actually, I was an idiot for trusting someone else...
Young-Mi starts to get up, then looks at the cell phone in her hand. She smiles craftily as she plots her next move against Sun-Mi.
Everyone is working at their desks, even though it is after 5:00 PM. Jin-Soo stops reading and stretches his arms wide.
Jin-Soo............. What a long day! Anyone want to go out tonight?
Ki-Jong and Kyung-Hee exchange a quick glance.
Ki-Jong............. I'm busy later.
Kyung-Hee......... Me, too.
No one else even bothers to answer.
Jin-Soo............. Gee, this office is so boring lately. Sun-Mi, how about you? Want to go for karaoke after you do the News?
Young-Mi gives Jin-Soo a dirty look and goes back to her reading.
Sun-Mi.............. Thanks, but I have to study for the exam this weekend.
Young-Mi........... (quiety sarcastic) Why bother? Didn't you barely pass the last one?
Sun-Mi takes the criticism in silence, but Kyung-Hee decides to intervene.
Kyung-Hee......... (sharply) That's enough, Young-Mi!
Young-Mi glares back at Kyung-Hee, then abruptly gets up from her desk and leaves the office without another word.
Jin-Soo watches her leave, then returns to his complaint...
Jin-Soo............. Studying and exams! It's like being back in university again! Sheeesh...
Ki-Jong looks up at Jin-Soo and decides to have some fun at his Junior's expense.
Ki-Jong............. Hey, "Minefield", did you hear the Busan station is looking for a new home field announcer?
Jin-Soo............. The Giants? They're DG's arch rivals! Why would I want to go there?
Ki-Jong............. Word is out that anyone failing the exam this week will be transfered to the Busan station.
Wide-eyed, Jin-Soo immediately puts his head down and starts reading again.
Jin-Soo............. (nervously) I'm gonna study hard... all night!
Director Kim Eun-Ki is at his desk, talking on the phone.
Eun-Kim............ Those aren't good enough, I need more explicit photographs!
Voice................ (on the phone) Running survellience is one thing. But something like that is going too far...
Eun-Ki............... I pay you handsomely for results, so nothing is 'too far'! Do you get my meanng?
Voice................ (on the phone, grumbling) Yes... Loud and clear...
Gwi-Sung carries a steaming cup of coffee up the stairs. He goes to Sun-Mi's open bedroom door and looks in.
Kui-Sung............ (cheerfully) Here's the fresh coffee you ordered!
Inside the bedroom, Sun-Mi is at her desk. Her computer is turned on, but she is asleep, her head resting on her arms.
Gwi-Sung........... (surprised) Sun-Mi?
Sun-Mi is standing by the door with a packed carryon bag, when her father comes out of his bedroom.
Gwi-Sung........... Ready to go?
Sun-Mi.............. Yes Daddy, I'm all packed.
He notices that her eyes are red and tired.
Gwi-Sung........... Up all night studying again? Why do you have to work so hard for this job?
Sun-Mi.............. Someone told me I needed to be more serious about my work.
He makes a fist with his free hand, and waves it in the air.
Gwi-Sung........... Who said you don't work hard enough? What's that guy's name? I ought to punish him, big time!
Sun-Mi.............. Daddy, please! It doesn't matter who it was. It's true; I make too many mistakes in my work.
....................... I have to do better if I want to earn respect from my colleagues.
Gwi-Sung takes the handle of Sun-Mi's bag from her hand.
Gwi-Sung........... Let me take that for you... I'll put it in the car while you grab some breakfast.
Sun-Mi.............. But you should be at the construction site soon; I'll call a taxi.
Gwi-Sung........... They'll do fine without me for a few hours. Traffic is heavy this time of day.
....................... If you wait for a taxi, you might be late. You don't want to miss your flight, do you?
Sun-Mi.............. (stubbornly) Daddy! I'm not a child anymore. I can take care of myself!
Gwi-Sung........... (exasperated) Don't make a fuss. There's plenty of time to take care of yourself after your old dad is gone.
....................... (insistently) I'll take you, and that's that!
Sun-Mi sees that her father is determined to send her, so despite wanting to be treated as an adult, she backs down.
As she looks at him, her attitude softens and her eyes mist up when she considers the truth in his words.
She puts her arms around his neck and gives him a big, warm hug.
Sun-Mi.............. My Daddy... is the best in the world!
LATER...
Gwi-Sung in driving his Range Rover through heavy Seoul traffic. In the passenger seat beside him, Sun-Mi is fast asleep.
He glances over at her, reminded of how she'd always fallen asleep in the car as a child, too.
He smiles fondly... Sun-Mi is still his little angel...
With the last of the training exams finished, enthusiasm is high now that everyone has the rest of the weekend off.
Sun-Mi, Jin-Soo, Young-Mi, and their other office colleagues are comin gout of the conference room into the corridor outside.
Jin-Soo............. (proudly) Wow, all that studying paid off! I got a 96! How about you, Young-Mi?
Young-Mi........... (smugly) What do you think? 100, of course.
Jin-Soo seems unhappy at being upstaged. Young-Mi decides to needle her rival.
Young-Mi........... What about you, Sun-Mi?
Sun-Mi.............. (sighs) I don't know what happened. It's only 82.
Young-Mi........... (smirking) You should be happy that at least you didn't fail this time.
Jin-Soo comes to Sun-Mi's aid, changing the subject.
Jin-Soo............. So now we're all finished, let's party!
Sun-Mi.............. What do you have in mind?
Jin-Soo............. First, I'm thinking that we...
Jin-Soo's cell phone rings. He looks at the caller ID, and appears surprised. He stops walking.
Jin-Soo............. I have to take this call.
Sun-Mi also stops, but their other colleagues keep going.
Jin-Soo............. (into the phone) You're here? ... Now? ... Sure! Where? ... I know it...
He closes his phone and turns to Sun-Mi.
Jin-Soo............. Sorry, looks like I already have plans for tonight.
Sun-Mi.............. That was Cho-Jeh, right?
Jin-Soo............. (red-faced) How did you know?
Sun-Mi.............. She called last night to ask what hotel we were staying in. It looks like you two are hitting it off pretty well, huh?
Jin-Soo............. (stammering) Er... we’re just friends is all... Just good friends... Well, I gotta go. See you later...
He quickly trots off to meet up with Cho-Jeh. Sun-Mi smiles to herself, happy her efforts to set them up seem to have worked out.
She looks around to see if anyone else is still around.
The other office colleagues have already left on the elevator.
Young-Mi is with Woo-Jin, arguing. She stomps off in a huff, and Woo-Jin hurries after her.
Qi-Jong and Kyung-Hee are walking off together toward the hotel bar, engrossed in conversation.
Sun-Dal, Joo-Hee, and Hyung-Chul are still inside the conference room, conversing with one of the session speakers.
Sun-Dal walks away with the man, carrying a stack of class materials he'd picked up from a nearby table.
Joo-Hee says something to Hyung-Chul that Sun-Mi can’t make out, and he replies with a laugh and a smile.
She moves to pick up the remaining materials from the table, but Hyung-Chul offers to carry them instead.
They walk off together toward another door, across the room. Hyung-Chul opens the door for Joo-Hee to go through first.
With everyone paired up, and especially after watching Joo-Hee go off with Hyung-Chul, Sun-Mi feels very lonely.
She walks off, despondently, down the empty corridor...
Jin-Soo arrives in the hotel lobby to find Cho-Jeh waiting, dressed casually in beach clothes and carrying a large basket.
When she sees him, she waves eagerly.
Jin-Soo............. (happily excited) You came just to meet me?! We’re like a real couple now!
Cho-Jeh............ (suddenly stand-offish) Actually, er... it wasn’t’ just to see you... I had plans already...
....................... It’s only a coincidence, that we're both staying at the same hotel.
Jin-Soo............. Is that basket is just a coincidence, too?
Cho-Jeh............ Umm... I planned a picnic dinner by the beach; but if you don't want to come...
Jin-Soo............. (eagerly) I'm starving! Wiat right here while I go up and change.
Jin-Soo takes off, running for the elevator. As Cho-Jeh watches him go, she notices Sun-Mi, alone, go out to the seaside terrace.
Sun-Mi comes out of the hotel. The seaside terrace is filled with rows of umbrella tables, only a few of them occupied.
Overhead, an azure blue sky is sprinkled with clouds, streaked gold from the orange sun settling into the distant horizon.
She goes over to the railing, to look out over the ocean, and give herself time to think.
In the resort’s protected cove, gentle waves roll in, repeatedly lapping the edge of a broad sandy beach.
A row of empty beach tents, waiting to be dismantled after the prime season’s end, sit a line above the high water mark.
Gulls and other birds dot the sand and water and circle overhead, At the late hour, the beach is deserted.
Sun-Mi takes out her cell phone and starts to call Hyung-Chul, but as the call initiates, she immediately cuts it off.
After staring at the phone for a few seconds, she removes the battery, and puts the phone back into ther purse.
She walks along the rail, then sees, at the far end of the terrace, a stairway leading down to the beach...
Hyung-Chul comes into the hotel lobby, looking around as if searching for someone.
When he sees Cho-Jeh, he goes over to speak to her.
Hyung-Chul........ Miss Jo Cho-Jeh, have you seen Announcer Jin Sun-Mi?
Cho-Jeh is in awe at being directly spoken to by the CEO Prince Charming of MBS.
Cho-Jeh............ (stammering for words) You... you're... looking... Sun-Mi?
Hyung-Chul........ She called, but now her phone is turned off. Do you know where she might be?
Cho-Jeh............ (pointing) Out... that door...
Hyung-Chul........ (smiles) Thank you, Miss Jo.
He hurries after Sun-Mi, as Cho-Jeh closely follows him with her eyes, her hands clasped over her heart.
Cho-Jeh............ (aloud to herself) He's so handsome... (sighs) If I were only Sun-Mi...
Jin-Soo............. (from behind Cho-Jeh) You'd what if you were Sun-Mi?
Cho-Jeh............ (irritated) Certainly I'd -have better company!
Jin-Soo............. (puzzled) Huh?
Sun-Mi is at the bottom of the stairway. From there, a boardwalk leads across the beach behind the row of tents.
Eschewing the boardwalk, Sun-Mi slips off her high heel slingbacks and steps with bare feet onto the sun-warmed sand.
Swinging her shoes by their heel straps, she starts off on a meandering path across the beach toward the water.
But as Sun-Mi reaches the water's edge, from the far end of the terrace, a lone figure appears at the railing and watches her...
Woo-Jin is spittiing mad as he drags Young-Mi by the wrist into his hotel room. Inside, he releases his grasp and turns to face her.
Woo-Jin............ (angrily) I won't stand any more of this... your blatant flirting with Director Yoon!
Young-Mi........... Flirting? Is that how you see it? (smugly) I prefer to think of it as hedging my bets for the future.
Woo-Jin............ The only future I want you to think about is us getting married!
Young-Mi walks over to the window as she talks...
Young-Mi........... Marriage? You know that isn't going to happen soon, don't you? I have a reputation to consider...
....................... How will it look for Korea's top TV news celebrity to be married to just an ordinary cameraman?
At the window, she looks out at the sun setting over the ocean.
Woo-Jin............ Huh Young-Mi! Doesn't what happened between us mean anything to you?
Young-Mi........... (smiles) Has anything happened that is worth us staying together?
Woo-Jin............ (looking aghast) I'll pretend I didn't hear that!
While she is looking down on the beach, for a moment Young-Mi's jaw clenches and her eyes narrow.
But she shows a warm smile when she turns to face Woo-Jin again.
Young-Mi........... Let's not argue any more, okay?
Her sudden change of demeanor deflates Woo-Jin's anger.
Woo-Jin............ I'm sorry... I just feel like you're slipping away from me.
Young-Mi steps close to Woo-Jin and kisses him, but when he tries to embrace her, she gently pushes him back.
Young-Mi........... I'm tired; it's been a long week. Shall we call it an early night?
Woo-Jin............ Sure... Want to meet up for breakfast?
Young-Mi smiles in reply as she goes over to the door. There, she pauses before leaving the room.
Young-Mi........... Sleep well...
Sun-Mi strolls along the edge of the water, playing tag with the waves.
Concentrating on timing the advance of the next surge, she is surprised when another shadow appears next to hers.
She looks up to see Seok-Hun.
He is dressed for the beach, barefoot in rolled-up khakis and an shirt unbuttoned almost to the waist.
Seok-Hun.......... What a coincidence; our paths cross again!
Sun-Mi.............. (eyeing him skeptically) I’m beginning to think these meetups aren't just by coincidence.
Seok-Hun.......... So you agree it's by fate, too?... (smiles at his joke) Do you mind?
Although glad for some friendly company, Sun-Mi tries not to show it.
Sun-Mi.............. Suit yourself... But it seems you went to a lot of trouble, coming all the way here.
Seok-Hun.......... Some things are worth a lot of trouble. Some people, too...
Sun-Mi smiles appreciatively. Although it's blatant flattery, it's nice to think that someone appreciates her, nonetheless.
Seok-Hun.......... (continuing) Actually, there is something I wanted to discuss with you.
Sun-Mi.............. You could have just called for that.
Seok-Hun.......... Some things, to be said right, have to be said in person.
Sun-Mi.............. (in jest) Then it better be something pretty amazing!
They start walking, leaving two trails of footprints side-by-side in the wet sand.
Seok-Hun focuses his attention on Sun-Mi, but she is distant, her thoughts appear elsewhere as she idly observes the gulls.
They are near the end of the beach, when Sun-Mi breaks the silence.
Sun-Mi.............. You seem to be in pretty good shape, for a mailroom clerk.
Seok-Hun.......... (proudly) I work out for two hours every day, that's how. Lifting weights, boxing practice, stuff like that...
Sun-Mi.............. Really? Let me see... do you have a six-pack?
She grabs for his shirt as if to check him out, but he pulls his shirt closed first.
Seok-Hun.......... What are you doing?
Sun-Mi.............. (looking up, toward the ocean, she points) Look! What's that?
Seok-Hun.......... (looking up) Where?
While he is distracted, Sun-Mi quickly pokes Seok-Hun hard in the gut with her index finger.
Sun-Mi.............. (laughs) You really do have a six-pack!
Seok-Hun exclaims with surprise at the sharp prod of her fingernail.
Seok-Hun.......... Uhhh!
He stares at Sun-Mi, astonished she would act so boldly. Watching from the terrace, Hyung-Chul is just as astonished.
Seok-Hun makes a move as if to retaliate, but Sun-Mi is too quick and skips ahead a few steps to stay out of his reach.
Seok-Hun.......... (good-naturedly) Hey! Jin Sun-Mi!
Sun-Mi stops and turns back. She teasingly sticks out her tongue at Seok-Hun. He smiles at her and laughs.
Seok-Hun.......... Why you little imp!
Seok-Hun charges her, but Sun-Mi takes off running, splashing through the shallow water.
But his stride is longer, and she is hindered by her pencil skirt. He quickly catches up and grabs Sun-Mi by the arm to stop her.
Panting lightly from their exertion, they both take a few seconds to recuperate.
The sun is on the horizon, and the breeze off the water is chilly on her damp skin. Sun-Mi feels a shiver tingle down her spine.
Whether that sensation was prompted by the chill, or Seok-Hun’s hand on her arm, she doesn't know.
Sun-Mi.............. (teasingly) What are you going to do, now that you've caught me?
Seok-Hun.......... Huh?
The sparkle in her eyes reflects the setting sun, drawing his gaze. Then, having gotten his attention, Sun-Mi lowers her eyes shyly.
Seok-Hun moves closer to Sun-Mi...
Too close... Hyung-Chul thinks as he watches. He's too far to make out their words, but there is no mistaking what he is seeing...
Seok-Hun rests his fingers lightly under Sun-Mi’s chin and raises it. At his touch, she closes her eyes, but does not pull away.
Hyung-Chul prepares himself to intervene and rush down to protect Sun-Mi, if Seok-Hun should try to force anything on her.
But so far she has gone along willingly, she even appears to be the instigator of the unfolding drama below.
Seok-Hun seems to be in no hurry to take advantage of the situation, biding his time before accepting the apparent invitation.
A wave runs up the sand, splashing a froth of bubbles over their feet for a few seconds before it starts to recede.
Hyung-Chul watches with bated breath, hoping for Sun-Mi to step back at any moment and break it off, but still she doesn't move.
Instead, as Seok-Hun's lips hover perilously close to Sun-Mi's luscious mouth, one shoe slips from her fingers, dropping to the sand.
Hyung-Chul turns away before the other shoe drops, too.
Shaken by the scene now burned indelibly into his memory, he hurries back toward the hotel, leaving ahead of the predictable finale...
Cho-Jeh and Jin-Soo sit on a bench on the bluff overlooking the beach, sharing a picnic dinner.
He sips from a can of Hite, while she gorges on a leg of fried chicken.
Her mouth stuffed, Cho-Jeh suddenly points excitedly with a half-devoured leg.
Cho-Jeh............ (words garbled) Over there... isn’t that Jin Sun-Mi?
Jin-Soo............. (staring) Yeah, but who is the guy she's with? It's not Director Yoon.
Cho-Jeh............ It looks like that mailroom guy...
She puts down the chicken leg and takes a swig of beer as she keeps an eye on the unfolding scene.
Cho-Jeh............ Ohmigod... Are they doing what I think they're doing? Bu they've just met!
Jin-Soo............. If they’ve just met, and we’ve known each other for months, why can’t we do that, too?
Cho-Jeh............ Huh?
He leans closer to Cho-Jeh, puckers his mouth, and busses her quickly on the lips. Startled, she pushes him away.
Cho-Jeh............ (irritated) What are you doing, idiiot?
Jin-Soo grins at Cho-Jeh, clearly pleased with himself.
Jin-Soo............. Stealing a kiss... what did you think?
Cho-Jeh looks back with contempt. Then without warning, she throws her arms around his neck, and pulls his face close to hers.
Before Jin-Soo can react, she gives him a prolonged, passionate kiss hard on the lips.
When she finishes and releases him, Jin-Soo is completely stunned. He stares at Cho-Jeh, mouth agape in surprise.
Cho-Jeh grins at Jin-Soo, clearly pleased with herself.
Cho-Jeh............ Choi Jin-Soo, if you’re gonna steal a kiss... then at least, do it right...
