Act 2

SCENE: Caribbean Bay water park, afternoon

On a hot summer day, Jin-Soo and Cho-Jeh cool off at the Everland Resort Caribbean Bay water park in Yongin.

While waiting for Cho-Jeh to change, Jin-Soo uses the time to ogle the young women walking by in swimsuits.

Eventually, Cho-Jeh comes out and peers from behind a palm frond before she steps out and calls to get his attention.

Cho-Jeh............ Choi Jin-Soo!

She looks at him with a coy expression.

Jin-Soo pulls down his sunglasses and stares in Cho-Jeh's direction.

Cho-Jeh slowly walks up to Jin-Soo, giving him plenty of time to take in her feminine beauty.

But Jin-Soo is otherwise engrossed ...

Barely acknowledging Cho-Jeh's presence, he pushes her aside for a clear view behind her.

Puzzled at his action, Cho-Jeh sits down and looks over her shoulder.

Two attractive young women -- one in a red bikini -- are walking toward them.

Spontaneously, Jin-Soo blurts out his admiration ...

Jin-Soo............. Wow, nice!

Incensed, Cho-Jeh grabs Jin-Soo's head with her hands and turns it, forcing him to look at her instead.

Cho-Jeh............ Jin-Soo!

He adjusts his sunglasses.

Jin-Soo............. Oh, Cho-Jeh. (smiling) You're pretty.

Unpersuaded, Cho-Jeh looks as if she is about to belt him.

Jin-Soo............. So pretty.

He looks away again.

SCENE: Caribbean Bay water park, afternoon

In the wading pool, Jin-Soo and Cho-Jeh are splashing water on each other.

Cho-Jeh splashes water in Jin-Soo's face as she laughs at him.

Intending to give her as good as he got, Jin-Soo then splashes water into Cho-Jeh's face.

Tit for tat, their splashing becomes more intense and retaliatory.

Escalating the spat, Jin-Soo pulls Cho-Jeh down into the water and holds her face in the water, laughing at her.

Eventually, he lets go of Cho-Jeh. Declaring victory, he demands an end to their combat.

Jin-Soo............. Quit fooling around!

But Cho-Jeh isn't finished yet -- she wants her revenge!

Catching him unawares, she trips Jin-Soo, knocking him into the water.

Splashing him, she forces his face under the water in retaliation.

He struggles against her, but unrelenting, she repeatedly splashes him.

Their antics draw a crowd that forms a circle around them, watching the angry couple go at it.

SCENE: MBS car parking garage, evening

Waiting in the MBS underground car park at their appointed time, Sun-Mi impatiently checks her watch.

Sun-Mi.............. (grumbling) Where are you, Kim Woo-Jin!

Then she looks past Woo-Jin's blue Matiz and notices him approaching ...

Waving energetically, she calls out loudly ...

Sun-Mi.............. Oppa!

When Woo-Jin sees Sun-Mi, irritation crosses his face.

Woo-Jin............ I said not to wait.

Sun-Mi.............. (determinedly) And I said I would!

Woo-Jin............ I don't need a nanny watching over me!

Sun-Mi.............. Then who will keep you from drinking?!

Woo-Jin............ (adamantly) I told you I won't!

But Sun-Mi isn't believing a word of it ...

Sun-Mi.............. Last night, your mom said you came back late -- with alcohol on your breath!

Realizing the reason for her concern is mistaken, he drops his irritation to explain ...

Woo-Jin............ Our crew had a late shoot and went out for a round afterward. One drink is not drinking.

Wary about his veracity, she challenges him ...

Sun-Mi.............. Was it really only one?

He takes out his mobile.

Woo-Jin............ I'll call my colleague. You can ask him.

Sun-Mi.............. Okay, I believe you. But I promised your mom we'll meet up after work every night.

Woo-Jin............ What about your radio show?

Sun-Mi.............. I can tape afternoons, so I'm free in the evenings. Any other questions?

He sighs, exasperated by her insistence ...

Woo-Jin............ Why are you doing this?

Sun-Mi.............. (musing) Because ...

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 15, in Sun-Mi's garden]

Hyung-Chul. You know, sometimes, when you're so attached with Woo-Jin, I also get upset. I'm a guy, too ...

................. But if you ignore Woo-Jin when he's struggling and you just come to me, I don't think I'd like that, either ...

Hyung-Chul. Because that is who Jin Sun-Mi is, and that's what I like about you.

Sun-Mi.............. Because -- that's who I am!

SCENE: Woo-Jin's car, evening

After leaving MBS, Woo-Jin drives over the Seogang Bridge from Yeongdeunpo to Mapo.

Woo-Jin............ .Are you hungry?

Sun-Mi turns to look at him.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm glad you asked. I'm famished!

Woo-Jin............ What do you want to eat?

Sun-Mi.............. Umm ... bungeoppang ...

Woo-Jin............ Where?

Sun-Mi.............. Myeongdong.

SCENE: MBS Executive lounge, night

Meanwhile, Hyung-Chul is meeting with his father, MBS President and Board Chairman Yoon Hoe-Jang, and Director Kim.

Hyung-Chul....... MBS needs to move aggressively to take advantage of the growing 'Korean Wave' in dramas.

Hoe-Jang.......... What are you proposing?

Hyung-Chul....... Doubling investment in our internet infrastructure and expanding our overseas marketing.

Hoe-Jang.......... (nodding) I understand your thinking that this is a good opportunity ...

He sips from his drink as he ponders his next words.

Hoe-Jang.......... but many on the Board are hesitant to invest heavily in what they see as a passing fad.

The Chairman turns to his Managing Director for another opinion ...

Hoe-Jang.......... What do you think?

Eun-Ki.............. He has a point, but gambling scarce funds shortchanges current development projects.

Hyung-Chul....... (sharply) You mean, YOUR project!

Glaring at Hyung-Chul over the direct affront, Eun-Ki counters defensively ...

Eun-Ki.............. I'm only asking for the same opportunity others were granted -- without question, I might add!

The backhanded jab irks Hyung-Chul.

Hyung-Chul....... Are you insinuating that ...

Interrupting, his father nips the impending confrontation in the bud.

Hoe-Jang.......... Please, gentlemen, don't make this personal. You both have a point -- but we need a solution.

Seeing an opportunity, Eun-Ki offers an alternative ...

Eun-Ki.............. Why not leverage our funds through joint-ventures in the new markets?

Hoe-Jang.......... That has potential. Go on.

Eun-Ki.............. This way we get most of the rewards, while significantly reducing the risk.

The Chairman nods his agreement.

Hoe-Jang.......... That could gain the Board's approval ...

He now looks to his son ...

Hoe-Jang.......... How about it? Can you take this project on?

When Hyung-Chul hesitates, his rival prods ...

Eun-Ki.............. Your international experience will be valuable in making this a success.

Although aware that his business rival has ulterior motives, Hyung-Chul has no choice.

Hyung-Chul....... I'll put together a plan.

Hoe-Jang.......... Good. We'll review it at the Board meeting next week.

SERIES OF SCENES: Myeongdong street, evening

By the time they arrive in Myeongdong, dusk has settled in, and the streets are crowded with throngs of shoppers.

The busy shopping mecca is also a paradise of street food choices.

The streets are lined with rows of food stalls, including Sun-Mi's choice ...

Bungeoppang.

SCENE: inside Woo-Jin's car, night

Later that night ...

Returning from Myeongdong, Woo-Jin slows the car to a stop beside Sun-Mi's gate.

Woo-Jin............ We're here.

He looks over at Sun-Mi, who has fallen asleep in the front passenger seat.

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi?

He reaches over to gently touch her shoulder, and raises his voice.

Woo-Jin............ Hey, wake up sleepyhead!

Her eyes drift open slowly.

Sun-Mi.............. Huh?

When she is aware they are in the car, she quickly sits up and fusses with her hair self-consciously.

Sun-Mi.............. When did I fall sleep?

Woo-Jin............ Soon after we left, just like when we were kids.

She smiles wistfully ...

Sun-Mi.............. I remember how you'd tease, calling me 'sleepyhead', and tickling me awake.

He laughs.

Woo-Jin............ Yeah ... and you'd tattle to my mom and get me into trouble.

They share a good laugh, enjoying a close bond established over years of familiarity.

Woo-Jin............ You'd better go in now.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes ...

Turning to look at Woo-Jin, she switches into 'nanny' mode and firmly commands ...

Sun-Mi.............. Go straight home. Don't stop anywhere else ...

As she unfastens her seatbelt, she adds a warning to show she can still 'tattle' on him if he gets out of line ...

Sun-Mi.............. I'll call your mom to tell her you're on the way.

He frowns at her nagging.

Sun-Mi.............. I have to go to the office early. Be here at six, sharp. Got it?

Woo-Jin............ (reluctantly) Yes.

Sun-Mi.............. See you tomorrow then ...

SCENE: Inside Hyung-Chul's car, night

Parked nearby, Hyung-Chul is watching, biding his time until Woo-Jin leaves.

He recalls his conversation with Sun-Mi on the MBS rooftop ...

FLASHBACK [Scene from earlier in the episode]

Hyung-Chul. Then you will marry Woo-Jin?

Sun-Mi........ If the only way to make Woo-Jin forget Young-Mi, is by taking her place in his heart, I'll willingly do that.

His expression grows hard as he vows that will never happen ...

Hyung-Chul....... It's time I put some sense back into your head, Jin Sun-Mi!

SCENE: Sun-Mi's gate, night

Sun-Mi alights from the car, and starts off toward the gate.

But Woo-Jin gets out, too, intercepting her.

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi ...

She stops, to hear him out.

Woo-Jin............ How long is this going to go on? What about Director Yoon?

Sun-Mi.............. What about Senior?

Woo-Jin............ Shouldn't you be with him instead? Go back to him.

Sun-Mi.............. I can't. I told Senior to erase all his memories of me, to forget as if I never existed.

Her declaration surprises him.

Woo-Jin............ Are you serious?!

Sun-Mi.............. Yes! And I meant every word of it!

The corners of her mouth lift slightly, as if thinking of something sadly amusing.

Sun-Mi.............. Meeting Senior was like living in a Cinderella fantasy ... sometimes I wonder if it was all a dream ...

Her eyes, wet with emotion, glisten in the light from the gate.

Sun-Mi.............. (bitterly) But reality has a way of crashing dreams.

She pauses to get control of her emotions before continuing with a level, firm voice ...

Sun-Mi.............. I expected Senior would be upset, like he was before, but he just said I can do as I wanted.

....................... Does that sound like someone who really cares about a person, as much as about his business?

He avoids answering her question by posing his own ...

Woo-Jin............ Why don't you ask him?

Sun-Mi.............. I did, in a way. I asked what he'd do if ... if you and I decided to marry.

Woo-Jin............ Why did you say that?

A wisp of a smile briefly crosses her face as she recalls.

Sun-Mi.............. That night you stayed over at my house. You remember it, right?

Woo-Jin............ I was drunk. But, more or less, yes.

Sun-Mi.............. Does that answer your question, then?

He lowers his eyes guiltily.

Woo-Jin............ Look, I was out of line. I'm sorry about what happened.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm not asking for an apology, but for taking responsibility.

He looks up at her again, speaking forthrightly.

Woo-Jin............ Okay. I took advantage of the situation, of your good nature. It was wrong to force myself on you.

Sun-Mi.............. What happened, happened. But you had a point. Marrying may be the only solution to the problem.

The decisiveness in her voice, as if it's already a fact, unsettles him.

Woo-Jin............ Marriage is not something to do on a whim.

Sun-Mi.............. I know. So let's use the next two months to decide. Will you agree to do that?

Woo-Jin............ Sure. But why so quickly? What's the rush?

Sun-Mi.............. Because this is something we need to do right now, while the choice is still ours to make.

Her answer just raises more questions ...

Woo-Jin............ If you mean my Mom ... Sun-Mi, what aren't you telling me?

But Sun-Mi has said all she wants to, for now.

Sun-Mi.............. Let's talk about this another time. It's getting late, you should go home.

Woo-Jin gets back into the car, puts on his seatbelt, and starts the engine.

Meanwhile, Sun-Mi comes up to the car window to send him off with a rewarding smile, and a directive ...

Sun-Mi.............. Tomorrow, let's make it our first official date, okay?

Her sunny good-humor brings a grin to his face, too.

Woo-Jin............ Sure. What do you want to eat?

Her eyebrows rise as her smile widens.

Sun-Mi.............. Surprise me! Now go ...

She steps away from the car and waves.

Sun-Mi.............. Bye!

He waves back, and drives off down the lane ...

SCENE: Inside Hyung-Chul's car, night

From his car, Hyung-Chul watches, as Sun-Mi remains by the gate until Woo-Jin's car turns the corner.

As he waits, he reflects on what he'd heard ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene]

Sun-Mi.............. I told Senior to erase all his memories of me, to forget as if I never existed ... and I meant every word of it!

Her decisive avowal makes him reconsider his reason for coming to see her.

He waits another minute for Sun-Mi to go inside.

Then he starts the engine, turns on the headlights, and drives away.

SCENE: MBS Announcer 1 Team office, morning

SEVERAL DAYS LATER ...

Joo-Hee comes into the Announcers office, stopping in the doorway to look around.

Jin-Soo is working at his desk, and three of the staff are gathered around the conference table, talking.

Joo-Hee............ Ahem!

She clears her throat to get their attention ...

Joo-Hee............ Where is Sun-Mi? She's late for our meeting and not answering her mobile.

Jin-Soo turns to face Joo-Hee, and points to mobile phone on Sun-Mi's desk.

Jin-Soo............. That's because she forgot it when she left to go down to the camera department.

Irked, Joo-Hee shakes her head and sighs.

Joo-Hee............ (muttering under her breath) Sometimes I wonder what's in that girl's head!

Jin-Soo............. Huh?

She shows a smile, attempting to cover her irritation, unsuccessfully ...

Joo-Hee............ (testily) When she returns, tell Sun-Mi I want to see her about rescheduling to tomorrow.

Jin-Soo replies cautiously, lest he give Joo-Hee a reason to direct her ire onto him.

Jin-Soo............. Er ... Yes, I'll let Jin Sun-Mi know.

Joo-Hee turns and leaves the office, harsh heel clicks conveying her irritation as she strides down the corridor.

Jin-Soo exhales with relief and goes back to work.

But the three staff turn to gossiping ...

Female Staff 1... I saw Jin Sun-Mi leaving yesterday with that cameramen, Kim Woo-Jin.

Male Staff......... But isn't he that guy we saw at the hospital, who's engaged to Huh Young-Mi?

Female Staff 2... WAS engaged. Rumor has it that they've split up now.

Female Staff 1... Hmm ... do you think it's because of Sun-Mi?

Jin-Soo, overhearing them, steps in to defend his good friend ...

Jin-Soo............. No way! Sun-Mi's not that kind of person! Besides, she's dating Director Yoon.

Female Staff 2... What?! ... Director Yoon and Jin Sun-Mi are dating again?

Realizing he'd put his foot in his mouth, exposing Sun-Mi's 'secret' relationship, Jin-Soo tries to backtrack ...

Jin-Soo............. Er ...Did I actually say anyone was dating anyone?

Female Staff 1... You clearly did. Everyone thought they'd broken up when Director Yoon fired her!

Female Staff 2... Humph! ... That's explains why she got rehired so quickly!

Male Staff......... It's not just Director Yoon. She's also chummy with the other Execs, too!

Female Staff 1... Yeah ... Remember how she had a reserved seat at the head table during the gala?

Seeing that the hole he'd inadvertently started is getting deeper, Jin-Soo panics ...

Jin-Soo............. There can be other reasons Sun-Mi sat with the Executives, not just hanky-panky.

Female Staff 2... Are you saying there's possibly hanky-panky going on between Sun-Mi and the Executives, too?

Jin-Soo is desperate to put the genie back in the bottle ...

Jin-Soo............. Those are only rumors, and as broadcast journalists, we deal only in facts, right?

Male Staff......... Yes, so?

Jin-Soo............. So, look at the facts. If Sun-Mi is with Director Yoon she wouldn't date a cameraman, too. Right?

Female Staff 1... That's pretty likely.

Jin-Soo............. So then it's likely she wouldn't have broken up Kim Woo-Jin and Huh Young-Mi.

Male staff......... Er ... Okay.

Jin-Soo............. On the other hand, if it's a fact she's with Kim Woo-Jin, then she couldn't be dating Director Yoon.

Female Staff 2... (impatiently) Of course! What's your point?

Jin-Soo............. Since these two facts are both mutually exclusive, therefore the logical conclusion is that ...

A cheerful voice from the doorway interrupts him ...

Sun-Mi.............. Coffee is here!

They all turn to see Sun-Mi enter, carrying a tray filled with paper vending coffee cups.

Sun-Mi.............. Coming back, I was passing the canteen, and the aroma smelled so good, I had to stop.

She goes around handing out a cup to each person as she continues ...

Sun-Mi.............. I thought how all of you were working hard, and might need a refreshing break.

The three staff and Jin-Soo exchange quick, furtive glances, and then the staffers stand up and excuse themselves ...

3 Staff.............. Thanks for the coffee ... We have something to do right now ... Thanks, we're leaving first ...

Though puzzled at their urgent departure, Sun-Mi waves them off ...

Sun-Mi.............. Okay, see you later.

Then she turns to Jin-Soo ...

Sun-Mi.............. What was that all about?

Jin-Soo............. Actually, it's a bit embarrassing. We weren't working hard, just shooting the breeze.

She smiles about their guilty response at the situation, then asks eagerly ...

Sun-Mi.............. Tell me. Is there any juicy gossip going around?

Jin-Soo chokes on his coffee, and starts coughing ...

SCENE: MBS tape editing room, afternoon

Woo-Jin is walking along a windowed corridor in the MBS tower.

He turns a corner and comes to a tape editing room, opens the door, and goes in.

A colleague is working at one of the editing stations.

Woo-Jin............ Finished?

Colleague......... Almost.

Woo-Jin sits down next to his colleague.

Woo-Jin............ Let that segment run another second or so.

Colleague......... Yes.

Woo-Jin............ That's good. Cut it there.

Colleague......... Right. That's the last one.

Ejecting the tape cassette from the machine, he hands it to Woo-Jin.

Colleague......... Here you go.

Woo-Jin............ Thanks. You worked hard.

Colleague......... Oh, yeah ... someone was looking for you earlier, in the office.

Woo-Jin............ Who?

Colleague......... That announcer, Jin Sun-Mi ...

He grins rakishly.

Colleague......... You know, she's quite a cute dish. If you asked me, I wouldn't mind seeing more of her, ya know?

He winks suggestively.

Woo-Jin............ (protectively) Well, nobody's asking!

Colleague......... Sorry. I thought since Huh Young-Mi stopped in the other day, you were still seeing her.

Woo-Jin............ (snaps back) That's none of your business, too!

Colleague......... Hey! Ease up a bit, okay? No harm intended.

Woo-Jin exhales off his pique before replying ...

Woo-Jin............ Sure ... So what did Jin Sun-Mi want?

Colleague......... She wants you to call her right away ... (laughs) ... You know, I'm envious.

Woo-Jin............ Why?

Colleague......... How does a regular camera jockey like you, get two hot announcers chasing after him?

Even irritated, Woo-Jin sees humor in the remark ...

Woo-Jin............ (jokingly) Maybe 'cause I know how to make them look really good on camera?

Colleague......... (laughs) Right.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, afternoon

Kim Sun-Dal is surprised to hear of Hyung-Chul's travel plans ...

Sun-Dal............ A week ago you were opposed to going at all, and suddenly it's two months overseas?

Hyung-Chul....... Yes. That's how it worked out.

Sun-Dal............ Who's going to run the shop in your absence?

Hyung-Chul....... Who can I trust, but my lifetime drinking partner?

The blas answer astounds Sun-Dal, who sees only a heavier workload ...

Sun-Dal............ You're asking me to heap your responsibilities on top of my own? There's no way!

Hyung-Chul chuckles at his subordinate's distress.

Hyung-Chul....... Think of it as a trial run. Once I'm CEO I'll need a competent Director of Planning and Programming.

Still brooding over the anticipated pressures, Sun-Dal makes a sour face.

Sun-Dal............ Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Only then does Hyung-Chul expose an ulterior motive ...

Hyung-Chul....... I'm asking Joo-Hee to assist you. Does that make a difference?

The older man's face lights up with a smile, immediately working out the opportunities in his mind ...

Sun-Dal............ Why didn't you say so, earlier? ... How soon are you leaving?

Hyung-Chul laughs.

Hyung-Chul....... Next week.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's car, evening

Woo-Jin and Sun-Mi are leaving MBS after work.

The atmosphere in the car is tense, and Sun-Mi looks at Woo-Jin apprehensively ...

Woo-Jin............ All I'm asking is not to do that again.

Sun-Mi.............. If you don't like me coming to your office, then don't brush me off!

Woo-Jin............ It's just that rumors are starting. That can't be good for you.

Sun-Mi.............. Some things are more important than rumors.

Woo-Jin............ You're really going to pursue this, arent you?

Sun-Mi.............. (adamantly) I thought we decided it was settled.

He bristles at her dogged presumption ... and sets off a row ...

Woo-Jin............ No, YOU decided! Just like my mom always decided for me.

Sun-Mi.............. We're just doing what's best for you. For all of us.

Woo-Jin............ Really? Don't you think I might know what's best for myself?

Sun-Mi.............. And where did that get things? Your poor mother is beside herself!

Her words touch on his guilt, which he acknowledges bitterly ...

Woo-Jin............ You're right. I should be grateful to you, after the mess I've made.

She smiles, satisfied that her point is starting to sink in, even if his attitude still needs work.

Sun-Mi.............. So we're both settled on this now?

He sighs, gritting his teeth and agreeing reluctantly ...

Woo-Jin............ Sure. All settled.

Sun-Mi.............. That's better.

Resigned to the circumstances -- for now -- he moves on ...

Woo-Jin............ What is it tonight? Shopping again?

Sun-Mi.............. Nope. Let's see a movie ...

Happy that shopping is out, his attitude improves instantly, as he eagerly makes a suggestion ...

Woo-Jin............ How about Joint Security Area, with Lee Byung-Hun? I heard it's great.

But she has a different film in mind.

Sun-Mi.............. Actually, I want to see Siworae -- I love Jun Ji-Hyun.

Woo-Jin............ (sighs) You want me to watch a chick-flick with you? Why not go with your girlfriends?

Sun-Mi.............. (impishly) Because I need a strong, broad shoulder to cry on. That's why!

Reluctantly, Woo-Jin concedes to Sun-Mi's decision with a wry, self-aware grin, that she always gets her way.

Woo-Jin............ You want to eat first?

Sun-Mi.............. Uh-huh.

Woo-Jin............ Where do you want to go?

She laughs.

Sun-Mi.............. Il Mare, of course ...

(Editor's note : The name for Siworae outside of Korea, Il Mare, Italian for 'The Sea', is also a popular restaurant chain)

SCENE: MBS Announcer 1 Team office, night

After a long planning meeting with Hyung-Chul, Sun-Dal returns to the Announcer's office around 10 PM.

There, he finds Young-Mi still at her desk, working ...

Sun-Dal............ You're haven't gone home?

Young-Mi.......... I'm doing research for next month's main segments.

Sun-Dal............ Aren't you working too hard?

Young-Mi.......... I want to make the program successful, to help Director Yoon.

Contrary to Hyung-Chul's advice, Sun-Dal decides to probe for her intentions concerning Director Kim ...

Sun-Dal............ Is that your only motivation, Announcer Huh?

Unconsciously, she looks away guiltily, revealing to him that he's hit on something.

Young-Mi.......... I don't know what you mean, Senior.

Sun-Dal............ (bluntly) There's rumors, concerning Director Kim.

Not certain of what he knows, Young-Mi redirects the conversation ...

Young-Mi.......... To be honest, I do have another reason.

Sun-Dal............ (jesting) Let me guess. You want to be the next anchor on the News At Nine?

Young-Mi.......... Of course, that's every announcer's dream. But my goal is higher than that.

This prompts his curiosity, as she intended, to another line of questions.

Sun-Dal............ What goal is that?

Young-Mi.......... Someday, I'll be the first female Director of Planning and Programming at MBS ...

Amazed by her audacity at aspiring to his future promotion herself, Sun-Dal just stares at Young-Mi.

Young-Mi.......... The way I see it, MBS could use a woman's touch at the top ...

She smiles confidently.

Young-Mi.......... What do you think, Senior, is it possible?

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's club, night

After the News At Nine broadcast, Hyung-Chul meets Joo-Hee at his club for a drink.

Joo-Hee............ Was it really your decision to go? Why not send the Marketing Director?

Hyung-Chul doesn't answer. Instead he down the last swallow of his drink, and pours another.

Joo-Hee............ I see. This is personal. You're running away again, right?

Hyung-Chul....... Stop it, Joo-Hee.

She exhales a long sigh.

Joo-Hee............ I regret what I said that day, in London. I feel like I've put a jinx on your life ...

They both go mentally back to that night by the Thames ...

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 2 by the Thames in London]

Joo-Hee............ I think that I'll never see you despairing over love for the rest of my life...

Hyung-Chul puts down his glass.

Hyung-Chul....... I didn't ask you here to chat over my personal problems.

She smiles as she tips her hand ...

Joo-Hee............ I know. I heard that Sun-Dal will step up as Acting Director while you're gone.

He chuckles, knowing that she would be a step ahead of him, as usual.

Hyung-Chul....... Yes, and I want you to assist him.

Joo-Hee............ Of course. But do you have to be so obvious?

Hyung-Chul....... Sun-Dal is a good man, but he won't wait forever. Do you really not like him?

Joo-Hee............ My head tells me tells me to seize this chance, but my heart ...

She twists a wistful smile with her lips.

Joo-Hee............ I don't know if I can ever bring myself to be vulnerable in front of a man again.

Hyung-Chul....... I'm sorry. I never intended things to turn out like they did.

Joo-Hee............ This isn't because of you, but because of me ...

Sipping from her drink, she contemplates for a moment before she continues.

Joo-Hee............ But we're not here to chat over my personal problems, either. Right?

He nods.

Hyung-Chul....... This means delaying your London appointment until next autumn.

Joo-Hee............ I figured as much. But that's probably good, under the circumstances.

Hyung-Chul....... Oh? Why?

Joo-Hee............ It's Sun-Mi. Recently she seems tired and distracted, and at times a bit out of sorts ...

Seeing the immediate concern in his face, she quickly moves to allay it ...

Joo-Hee............ She just complained of being nauseous. I'm sure it's nothing. I'll keep an eye on her.

He is only partially convinced, but trusts his long-time friend.

Hyung-Chul....... Thanks. What about her training?

Joo-Hee............ Since I'll be occupied doing your job, I won't have time for Sun-Mi now.

....................... Anyway, if I'm not going to London, I'll be here to direct the next training batch myself.

He laughs.

Hyung-Chul....... Now I'm regretting appointing Sun-Dal as Acting Director.

Joo-Hee............ (puzzled) You are?

Hyung-Chul....... Yes. I should have come to you first!

SCENE: Exterior of Sun-Mi's house, night

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Fresh from the shower, Sun-Mi comes into her room in her pajamas, damp hair loose, framing her face.

But sleep if far from her mind.

She goes to her desk, where her computer sits open, ready for her to continue from where she left off.

Instead, she picks up a softcover book from the desk, Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami.

Sitting on her bed, she plumps a pillow behind her back, and leans against the headboard to read.

Bracing her arms on her legs, Sun-Mi opens to a bookmark where she had last read ...

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O. as she reads silently)

"But who can say what's best? ...

"That's why you need to grab whatever chance you have of happiness where you find it,

"and not worry about other people too much.

"My experience tells me that we get no more than two or three such chances in a life time,

"and if we let them go, we regret it for the rest of our lives."

She closes the book as her thoughts drift to her own situation with Woo-Jin and Hyung-Chul ...

FLASHBACK [Scenes from various episodes]

Sun-Mi........ You really don't know?... You really don't know how I feel about you?

Sun-Mi........ Don't hold back because of me ... Woo-Jin and I have known each other for a long time ... too long.

Sun-Mi........ Can you retake that picture you took of me with your eyes?

................. This scenery and my expression ... I'm going to forget it all ...

Sun-Mi........ (shouting) You have to be happy without me, Woo-Jin ... You really have to be happy

Sun-Mi........ Someone said they like me, but I see that now it's really the end of things with you.

Sun-Mi........ Please give me some time to think ... And ... until I've figured things out, please leave me alone.

Sun-Mi........ Senior! I'm frustrated. What should I do? I didn't think you'd come.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm sorry, Woo-Jin. I shouldn't have called ... But when there's no one else to turn to I can always count on you.

Sun-Mi........ I really like you, Senior! ... I like you, just you and not anybody else. Please believe me.

Sun-Mi........ Marry you? You don't know how much I wanted to hear that from you ...

Sun-Mi........ I'm not just helping him, I might marry Woo-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. Please erase all the pictures you've taken of me with your eyes.

Woo-Jin............ Marriage is not something to do on a whim.

Sun-Mi.............. I know. So let's use the next two months to decide. Will you agree to do that?

Sun-Mi.............. I thought we decided it was settled.

Woo-Jin............ No, YOU decided! Just like my mom always decided for me.

Sun-Mi.............. We're just doing what's best for you. For all of us.

Tears are rolling in Sun-Mi's eyes now and running down her cheeks.

Sun-Mi.............. (complaining to herself) What is wrong with me? Why am I crying?

Setting the book aside, Sun-Mi wipes her eyes dry.

Sun-Mi.............. (aloud, to herself) If this is really the best for everyone, then why does my heart ache so much?

She glances over at the telephone on the bedside table, then picks up the telephone handset and taps in a number.

[sound of ringing phone]

SCENE: Cho-Jeh's bedroom, night

[sound of telephone ringing]

In the darkness, a hand reaches out, searching a bedside stand.

The hand grabs an alarm clock with a digital display showing 2:00 AM, then grasps a nearby mobile phone.

Lying in bed, barely awake, Cho-Jeh flicks open the phone and puts it to her ear.

Cho-Jeh............ (drowsily) Yes?

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) It's me.

Cho-Jeh............ Sun-Mi?! Why are you calling so late? Don't you ever sleep?

Sun-Mi.............. I ... [sniffing sound] ... I just ...

Cho-Jeh............ Whoa ... are you all right?

Sun-Mi.............. Y-yes. I think so ... But right now, I just need to hear a comforting voice ...

Cho-Jeh's eyes pop wide as she instantly comes alert, sitting up straight in her bed ...

SCENE: MBS HQ and studios, morning

SCENE: MBS conference room, morning

The Eve's Morning team is filing into a conference room for their daily planning meeting.

Young-Mi comes in, carrying a tray filled with vendor coffee cups.

Young-Mi.......... I brought coffee for everyone.

Sun-Dal............ Thanks, Young-Mi, but you needn't have.

Young-Mi.......... No bother, it's my turn, anyway.

She goes first to Sun-Mi, who is seated closest to the door.

Sun-Mi doesn't look at her.

Sun-Mi.............. (coldly) No, thanks.

Ignoring the snub, Young-Mi persists. She smiles as she places the cup next to Sun-Mi's papers.

Young-Mi.......... Cream and two sugars. That's how you like it, right?

Not wanting to appear boorish in front of her colleagues, Sun-Mi accepts the 'peace offering'.

Sun-Mi.............. Er ... yes. Thanks.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning

Hyung-Chul is walking with Joo-Hee to the Executives' offices on 10F.

They round a corner and come to his office suite.

His secretary, Miss Lee, is at her reception desk, typing on her computer keyboard. She looks up to greet them ...

Miss Lee........... Good morning, Director ... Manager Yoo.

Hyung-Chul....... Good morning. Is everything prepared?

Miss Lee........... Yes, just as you requested.

Hyung-Chul....... Good.

He motions to Joo-Hee.

Hyung-Chul....... Let's go in.

Miss Lee........... Oh ... Sir? I have your tickets.

Hyung-Chul....... Thank you. I'll collect them when I leave tonight.

Hyung-Chul and Joo-Hee move toward the door of his office.

Fastened to the metal door is a new name plaque:

Acting Director of Planning and Programming

Kim Sun-Dal

Hyung-Chul....... What do you think, Joo-Hee?

She smiles.

Joo-Hee............ He's probably already getting a big head.

They laugh.

Hyung-Chul opens the door, and they go inside.

SERIES OF SCENES: Eve's Morning studio set, morning

On the Eve' Morning studio set:

Sun-Mi is giving her Arts and Entertainment Corner ...

Sun-Mi.............. The exhibit continues through ... um ... er ... to the end of January? ...

Her delivery is sluggish and flat, unlike her usual bright, cheery performance.

Sun-Mi.............. So, if you're interested in Goryeo art and history, don't miss this.

She pauses and blinks, stifles a yawn, then offers a weak smile of apology to the audience.

Sun-Mi.............. Next ... with cooler weather coming, now is a good time to take in a ... a new theatre performance ...

She glances down at her script vacantly, as if she has forgotten her next line.

Sun-Mi.............. Umm ... This weekend, several shows are opening ...

In the studio control room:

The control room crew watches on anxiously as the final minute for the program ticks down.

PD................... (irately) What is Jin Sun-Mi doing!? Can't she see the time?!

Assistant........... She's in a real daze today.

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) ... Including some shows to take the ... um ... whole family ...

PD................... (into his mic) Jin Sun-Mi! ... Cut the Corner! Now! ... The time!

Camera close-up shot of Sun-Mi on the studio set:

Sun-Mi seems befuddled when she hears the PD's frantic order in her earpiece.

She glances over at the studio digital display for confirmation.

Sudden panic takes hold, as she realizes her error.

Fumbling for words, she blurts out the first thing that comes into her head ...

Sun-Mi.............. Oh ... er ... What a surprise. It seems that time's up already. I'll have to do this ... uh ... tomorrow?

Hyung-Chul's office:

Watching remotely from his office, Hyung-Chul is immediately aware of the awkward situation Sun-Mi is in.

His forehead creases with worry for her.

But there's nothing he can do, except watch the program grind to a dead halt, with only seconds remaining to wrap ...

Wide shot of the studio set:

The PD is livid, and lets his voice carry his consternation into everyone's earpiece ...

PD................... (V.O.) Sun-Dal! Take charge!

The experienced anchor quickly comes up with an apt riposte ...

Sun-Dal............ (jokingly) Yes ...Don't they say how time flies when you're enjoying yourself?

Sun-Mi.............. Ehm ... er ...

The studio audience titters at Sun-Mi's cluelessness, and Young-Mi sees an opportunity to skewer her rival ...

Young-Mi.......... We hope you've all enjoyed our show today, too, as much as Announcer Jin Sun-Mi seems to have.

Picking up on Sun-Dal's lead, the Eve's Morning team joins in with the audience's laughter.

Sun-Mi turns beet red, wishing she could crawl into a hole and disappear.

But she forces a smile to her face, tepidly laughing with the others as a show of good humor.

As the clock counts down the final five seconds, Sun-Dal wraps the program ...

Sun-Dal............ Thank you for joining us this morning. Have a good Thursday, everyone.

Young-Mi.......... Goodbye.

SCENE: MBS classroom, afternoon

Leaving the studio, Sun-Mi walks down the corridor.

Her destination is the classroom where Sun-Dal texted a message he would meet her privately.

When she arrives, the door is open. She stops outside, cringing as she anticipates the scolding about to singe her ears.

Sun-Dal............ (V.O.serious tone) Sun-Mi, come in and close the door!

She does as instructed.

Sun-Mi.............. You wanted to speak to me, Senior?

Sun-Dal............ Yes. You were in a daze. What's going on?

Sun-Mi.............. I'm sorry. I was distracted for a moment. It won't happen again.

Sun-Dal............ But it's not just this. Your radio program ...

She assumes what he is going to say, and preempts him ...

Sun-Mi.............. The ratings? ... I know. I'll work harder at it.

He waves his hand to assuage her concern.

Sun-Dal............ I'm more concerned about what the PD told me.

She looks away uneasily.

Sun-Mi.............. What was that?

Sun-Dal............ How lately you're preoccupied, unprepared, and not performing to your usual standard.

Sun-Mi hangs her head as he lays out the criticisms.

Sun-Dal............ And after today, I see her concern is valid. Is there anything you want to say for yourself?

Not wanting to discuss the situation with Hyung-Chul and Woo-Jin, she sidesteps an answer ...

Sun-Mi.............. Everything is fine, Senior. I'm just a little tired and out of sorts lately.

Sun-Dal............ Are you ill?

Sun-Mi.............. A bit of nausea. From stress, I think. Nothing serious.

Reading her expression, it is clear to Sun-Dal that Sun-Mi is not being forthcoming.

Sun-Dal............ Nothing else?

She shakes her head.

Sun-Dal............ In that case, there's no excuse. It's important that you do your work properly from now on.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, Senior, but ...

She pauses, debating if she should say more to explain herself ...

Sun-Mi.............. What if some things are more important than work?

He looks at her as if surprised anyone would say such words to their supervisor ...

Sun-Dal............ (sternly) Then you should reevaluate your goals, if this is really what you want or not.

She nods thoughtfully.

Sun-Mi.............. Lately, I've been doing that.

The supervisor in Sun-Dal fades back, and the concerned uncle steps forward ...

Sun-Dal............ You said you're stressed?

Sun-Mi.............. I shouldn't be, Senior, if I were good at my job. What do you think ... should I resign?

He stares at her, wondering if he'd heard wrong ...

Sun-Dal............ Huh? You want to quit?!

Sun-Mi.............. It's a possibility I'm considering.

The Manager in Sun-Dal comes forward again, to set an errant employee straight ...

Sun-Dal............ (sharply) The Company has invested a lot in training you. If you quit, it better be for a good reason!

Sun-Mi looks down, chastised.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, please forget I said anything ...

Dipping her head politely, she signals her intention to go.

Sun-Mi.............. I'll leave first. I need to tape my program now.

SCENE: Young-Mi's studio apartment, evening

Young-Mi is sitting on her bed, making a call ...

Female voice..... (V.O.) Please leave a message.

Young-Mi.......... It's my night off, and I'm alone here with a bottle of wine, thinking of us, together.

She lowers her voice to a sultry purr ...

Young-Mi.......... If you're free tonight, come over and stay awhile. I'll be waiting.

She puts the handset back on the cradle, and picks up the small white pill bottle beside the phone.

Young-Mi.......... (aloud to herself) You do make things so easy, Jin Sun-Mi ...

Looking at the bottle, she thinks back to the morning's team meeting ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene in this episode, at the Eve's Morning production meeting]

Young-Mi.......... I brought coffee for everyone.

Young-Mi.......... Cream and two sugars. That's how you like it, right, Sun-Mi?

Young-Mi smiles wickedly, speaking as if boasting to her rival ...

Young-Mi.......... Of course you'd never suspect something else might be in that coffee, too ...

She sets the pill bottle back on the table, and looks into the makeup mirror.

Young-Mi.......... That's why I'll beat you!

As she prepares to finish her makeup, she muses over her intentions ...

Young-Mi.......... When I crush Woo-Jin like an empty shell, you'll never be able to heal him, as hard as you try.

Her expression turns ice cold as she declares her ultimate goal ...

Young-Mi.......... You'll have to live with that failure facing you every day, for the rest of your life.

....................... And that, Jin Sun-Mi, will be my revenge!

SCENE: Woo-Jin's car, evening

Woo-Jin is driving with Sun-Mi after leaving MBS.

He glances over, notes the petulant frown on her face, and remarks on her unusual reticence.

Woo-Jin............ You've said hardly a word since you got in. What's eating you tonight?

Sun-Mi.............. (crossly) It's nothing! I just have a lot on my mind.

Woo-Jin............ Tell me ... what is it?

Her frown deepens as she recalls her dressing down by Sun-Dal ...

Sun-Mi.............. Senior Kim scolded me. He says I need to focus more on my work.

Woo-Jin............ Doesn't that tell you that doing this is hurting your job?

She flashes irritation at him with her eyes.

Sun-Mi.............. (curtly) Let's not talk about it, okay?

Her arrow stings, and he quickly drops the matter.

Woo-Jin............ Sure, where to tonight?

Sun-Mi.............. Actually, just take me home. I'm tired, and not feeling well.

SCENE: Seoul Gimpo Airport, evening

Hyung-Chul crosses the international terminal to the departures gate, joining the queue for passport check.

While he waits, his thoughts go back to a previous day ...

Joo-Hee............ You're running away again, right?

He takes his mobile out of a jacket pocket and flips it open.

FLASHBACK [Previous scene in this episode, on the MBS rooftop]

Sun-Mi.............. From now on, ignore me ... don't speak to me, or call me ...

Sun-Mi.............. Don't make this harder than it already is ... Goodbye, Director Yoon.

Changing his mind, he returns the phone to his jacket pocket with a reluctant sigh ...

Hyung-Chul....... (quietly, to himself) Goodbye, Sun-Mi.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi is sitting on her bed, talking on the phone.

Sun-Mi.............. No, Daddy, you don't need to come back. I'm just tired, with an upset stomach.

Gwi-Sung.......... (V.O.) I can ask Ms. Song to stop by and check on you.

Sun-Mi.............. There's really no need. After I get some sleep, I'll be fine.

Gwi-Sung.......... Sun-Mi, take care of yourself.

Sun-Mi.............. I will Daddy. Don't worry.

Gwi-Sung.......... Then, good night.

Sun-Mi.............. Bye.

She rests the handset on the phone cradle and lies down, pulling the covers over herself.

[doorbell chimes]

She puts the magazine down, sits up, and slips her feet into a pair of high heels parked by the bed.

[doorbell chimes]

Young-Mi.......... Come in, it's unlocked.

Woo-Jin steps in, pulling the door closed behind him.

Young-Mi stands, facing him as he comes into the room.

He stops abruptly, staring at her...

Young-Mi is wearing a skimpy red silk, backless mini-dress, slit high on one leg, that leaves little to the imagination.

She smiles demurely, as if bashful under his overt attention.

Young-Mi.......... This dress -- I bought it especially to wear tonight.

She does a full 360 pivot on the toes of her stilettos ...

Young-Mi.......... What do you think? Do you like it?

He doesn't reply, but his eyes -- locked onto her lithe, sensuous body -- speak for him.

An uncorked bottle of red wine and two goblets are on the small round table by the bed.

Young-Mi takes the bottle, pouring into both glasses.

She picks up the goblets and holds one out for him.

Young-Mi.......... Let's drink a toast.

Woo-Jin walks over and takes the goblet from her.

She raises hers and touches his.

[chinking sound]

Young-Mi.......... To you and me ... to us ... and to a special night ...

Sun-Mi.............. That night you stayed over at my house. You remember it, right?

Woo-Jin............ I was drunk and out of line ... I took advantage of the situation ... It was wrong to force myself on you.

Sun-Mi.............. What happened, happened. Marrying may be the only solution ... let's decide over the next two months.

Woo-Jin............ What's the rush?

Sun-Mi.............. This is something we need to do right now, while the choice is still ours to make.

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi, what aren't you telling me?

Hyung-Chul asks himself the same question ...

Hyung-Chul....... Yes, Jin Sun-Mi, what won't you say? And why two months?

Turning over the possibilities in his mind, he struggles to make sense of it all.

But as the pieces fall into place, the picture that appears is a shattering blow ...
