Act 3

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bathroom, morning

Sun-Mi is at the bathroom mirror, putting on her makeup before leaving for work ...

Through the open bathroom door, she hears the faint sound of her mobile phone ringing.

Irritated by the interruption in her routine if she goes to answer the call, she complains to herself ...

Sun-Mi.............. Oh, bother! ... Who could it be this early in the morning?

Deciding to ignore the summons, she proceeds with putting on her face ...

As Sun-Mi applies the finishing touches, she hears her mobile ringing again.

Glancing toward the bedroom, this time her attitude is different ...

Sun-Mi.............. (worried) What if something happened to Daddy?

She puts down the brush and anxiously hurries to pick up as she frets ...

Sun-Mi.............. Don't hang up! I'm coming!

ALTERNATING SCENES: Sun-Mi's bedroom / Jin-Suk's bedroom, morning

Jin-Suk's Bedroom

Jin-Suk is seated at her dressing table, talking on her bedroom phone.

Jin-Suk............. Sun-Mi? How are you feeling today?

Sun-Mi's Bedroom

Sun-Mi, relieved the call is not an emergency, instead has to relieve her Auntie's concerns.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm fine, Auntie.

Jin-Suk............. (V.O.) Your father asked me to come over to check on you..

Sun-Mi.............. There's no need. I just had an upset stomach yesterday, nothing serious.

Jin-Suk............. That's good to hear ... Er, is Woo-Jin there with you?

Sun-Mi.............. No. Why?

Jin-Suk............. Last night, he didn't come home.

Sun-Mi.............. Oh ... After he dropped me off, he said he had a lot of work to do. Maybe he slept over at the studio.

Jin-Suk's Bedroom

Jin-Suk............. I called there, but no one answered. And his mobile is turned off.

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) You know how it is. He's totally focused when he's in the darkroom, nothing can interrupt him.

Jin-Suk............. Actually, Sun-Mi, I'm worried. What if he's started drinking again?

Sun-Mi's Bedroom

Sun-Mi.............. Don't worry. Woo-Jin said he won't drink, and I believe him.

Jin-Suk............. (V.O.) How can you be so sure?

Sun-Mi.............. Auntie, I suppose it's about time I told you -- Woo-Jin and I are a couple now.

Jin-Suk's Bedroom

Jin-Suk............. A couple? When did that happen?

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) Just recently. A few days.

Pleased that her hopes have come to fruition, Jin-Suk smiles widely.

Jin-Suk............. Have you set an engagement date?

Sun-Mi's Bedroom

Sun-Mi.............. We're just dating now, Auntie. But we've talked about it, the possibility of marrying.

Jin-Suk............. Don't wait too long. You're already twenty-five, you know.

Sun-Mi laughs.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, but we have plenty of time. We both want to be sure it's the right thing for us.

SCENE: Young-Mi's studio, morning

Meanwhile, Woo-Jin and Young-Mi are nestled close in her bed.

He opens his eyes, sees the ruddy colors of dawn coming through the window, and checks his watch.

Woo-Jin............ (muttering) Shoot! ... I'm late!

Young-Mi stirs. Her eyes flutter open.

Young-Mi.......... Late for what? We have plenty of time to get to the office.

Woo-Jin............ I promised I'd take Sun-Mi to work every morning. I have to go pick her up.

Young-Mi.......... Sun-Mi's a big girl. She can get to work on her own.

Woo-Jin............ But ...

Young-Mi.......... You're already late. Sun-Mi probably caught a cab by now.

Woo-Jin............ I suppose.

She glances over and smiles at him mischievously.

Young-Mi.......... Besides, I can think of a dozen good reasons why you should stay here, with me.

Woo-Jin............ What reasons?

Young-Mi.......... These ...

She kisses his face and neck teasingly, until he takes her in his arms.

Their eyes meet in a smoldering gaze.

Then they bring their mouths together in a lingering, passionate kiss.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's gate, dawn

Trilling birds welcome the rising sun as it breaks over the distant hills.

Above, a crystal clear blue sky heralds a beautiful autumn day.

But the tranquil ambiance of the scene is lost on Sun-Mi, who is waiting impatiently for her ride to the office.

Standing in the lane outside her gate, she shifts her weight uncomfortably from one foot to the other.

The crisp morning air, a portent of the coming winter season, chills her bare legs and numbs her toes.

She hadn't expected to be out in the nippy temperature this long.

With an irritated huff, patience wears thin, and she checks her watch.

Sun-Mi.............. (grumbling) It's not like him ...

Frowning, she takes her mobile phone out of her office tote and makes a call.

Female voice..... (V.O.) The number you are calling is turned off. Please leave a message.

Sun-Mi.............. Woo-Jin? Where are you?! I'll be late for work! ... Call me!

She hangs up and is about to put her phone back in the bag, when it rings.

She quickly flips it open again and puts it to her ear.

Sun-Mi.............. Woo-Jin?

Jin-Suk............. (V.O.) No. it's me. I'm at the studio, and no one is here. Woo-Jin didn't come last night.

Sun-Mi.............. What? How do you know?

Jin-Suk............. Yesterday's mail was still in the box ... Sun-Mi, what should we do?

Sun-Mi.............. Don't worry. Just go to your shop. I'll see Woo-Jin at work later. I'm sure there's a good explanation.

Jin-Suk............. Call me as soon as you find out what happened, okay? ... Goodbye.

After Jin-Suk hangs up, Sun-Mi keys another number on the phone, listening while it rings.

The man who takes the call sounds bored and disinterested ...

Dispatcher........ (V.O.) Taxi service.

Sun-Mi.............. How soon can you send a car to Suseo?

Dispatcher........ Mmm ... It's a busy time ... Maybe forty-five minutes.

Sun-Mi.............. What?

Glancing at her watch again, she mentally calculates the arrival time in Yeouido.

Dispatcher ....... Lady, do you want a cab, or not?

Sun-Mi.............. Forget it ... I'll take the bus!

She snaps the phone shut and drops it into her office tote.

Squeezing her hand into a fist, she raises it threateningly and calls out loudly ...

Sun-Mi.............. Kim Woo-Jin! When I find you, I'm gonna punish you ... Big time!

Taking a deep breath to prepare herself, Sun-Mi starts off, running for the bus stop ...

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning

Sun-Dal leans back in Hyung-Chul's leather chair, feet up on the desk, sipping coffee, when the intercom buzzes.

He puts he feet down, leans forward, and pushes the TALK button.

Sun-Dal............ Yes, Miss Lee?

Miss Lee........... You have a call from the Director. Line 1.

Sun-Dal............ Thanks.

He presses the line button on the phone as he brings up the handset to his ear.

Sun-Dal............ Yes?

Hyung-Chul....... (V.O.) What's the situation on the budget? I heard Kim is pushing for cuts on the Announcer Teams.

Sun-Dal............ Don't worry. Joo-Hee's on top of it, running interference with the Board.

Hyung-Chul....... Good, I knew I could count on her.

Sun-Dal looks at the wall clock.

Sun-Dal............ If that's all, I'm meeting with Joo-Hee in a few minutes.

Hyung-Chul....... One more thing ... Sun-Mi ... see that she's not overworking herself.

Sun-Dal............ Don't worry. I'm on it! ... Hey, I've gotta go, or Joo-Hee will be pissed.

Hyung-Chul....... (humorously) Right. Don't leave the lady waiting.

SCENE: MBS conference room, morning

The Eve's Morning team is gathered for a staff meeting.

Kyung-Hee........ For the segment on the economy, we'll have 'man-on-the-street' interviews.

Sun-Dal............ What do you need?

Kyung-Hee........ I have a remote crew set for Thursday, two p.m. I need two interviewers, one male, one female.

Sun-Dal............ Choi Jin-Soo?

Jin-Soo............. Huh?

Sun-Dal............ Can you take this assignment?

Jin-Soo............. Er ... Me?

Ki-Jong............. (sarcastically) Who else is he talking too?

Jin-Soo flushes red.

Jin-Soo............. Okay. I'll do it.

Sun-Dal............ Good.

Sun-Mi raises her hand as she speaks up.

Sun-Mi.............. I have time Thurs ...

But Sun-Dal ignores her, looking to Young-Mi.

Sun-Dal............ Young-Mi, can you fit this in?

Young-Mi.......... Two o'clock? ... Sure. No problem.

Sun-Dal............ Very good. Now that's settled, let's move to the Sports corner.

Catching Sun-Mi's eye, Young-Mi smirks , taunting her rival that she has won this round.

SCENE: MBS Announcer 1 Team office, afternoon

Joo-Hee stands by the office door, speaking to the announcer staff.

Joo-Hee............ We're short-handed until the new trainee batch starts in February, so we'll all have to pitch in extra.

Groans sound from around the room.

Joo-Hee............ (humorously) I see you're all enthusiastic about it, anyway.

She pins a piece of paper to the schedule board.

Joo-Hee............ These are your special assignments for this month. Any questions?

No one responds.

Joo-Hee............ Then that's all. Back to work.

Joo-Hee turns and promptly leaves the office.

Kyung-Hee and Ki-Jong look at each other.

Ki-Jong............. Coffee?

Kyung-Hee nods, and they go out together.

The others return to their desks, except two female staff, who go over to check their assignments.

Female Staff 1... Why is everyone's name here, except Jin Sun-Mi?

Female Staff 2... (snippily) Dating the Director sure has it's perks, doesn't it?

Overhearing them, Jin-Soo comes to Sun-Mi's defense ...

Jin-Soo............. Sun-Mi works as hard as anyone here. Besides, she already has extra work with her radio show.

In the face of the overt criticism, Sun-Mi elects to leave, saying nothing as she gathers some papers together.

She stands and heads toward the door, deliberately avoiding looking at her tormentors, as if shamed.

Young-Mi stops typing on her laptop computer, and speaks up ...

Young-Mi.......... But it can't be because of Director Yoon. Right, Sun-Mi?

Sun-Mi stops and turns back, wondering what Young-Mi is up to.

Young-Mi.......... I heard that you're dating my ex, Cameraman Kim Woo-Jin, now ... Is it true?

Everyone stares at Sun-Mi, dumbfounded ...

Young-Mi.......... That would also explain why Yoo Joo-Hee is favoring you lately, too.

Sun-Mi's jaw tightens, but she prudently refrains from lashing out in her resentment.

Sun-Mi.............. It's amazing how some people have free time to be concerned over others' personal relationships ...

Her sarcasm hitting the mark, she looks around the room, directly at each person she is referring to.

No one takes up her silent challenge, not even Young-Mi.

Sun-Mi.............. Perhaps that's why Manager Yoo decided to assign more work to our office. What do you think?

Jin-Soo grins back, giving Sun-Mi a thumbs-up approval.

Sun-Mi.............. Unlike those others, I have more important things to do, so I'll leave first.

She turns abruptly and strides confidently, chin up, out the door, leaving everyone astonished at her nerve.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's car, night

That night, when Woo-Jin picks up Sun-Mi after work, the balmy weather has unexpectedly turned.

A blustery wind is blowing, and rain threatens.

But the atmosphere inside the car is colder than the growing storm outside.

Woo-Jin............ I was busy, and just forgot. I'm sorry.

Sun-Mi.............. Where did you go after you sent me home?

Woo-Jin............ To the studio ... I told you, I had work to do. All night.

Sun-Mi.............. Really? Your mom stopped by this morning, and you hadn't been there!

Caught in the web of his own lies, Woo-Jin doesn't try to defend himself, leaving Sun-Mi to speculate ....

Sun-Mi.............. Were you out drinking again?

Woo-Jin............ No.

Sun-Mi.............. Don't lie to me!

Woo-Jin............ I'm not ... I didn't get drunk!

Sun-Mi.............. Then where did you go? Huh?

Woo-Jin............ That ...

He wavers whether to reveal the truth or not, and decides to come clean ...

Woo-Jin............ I was with Young-Mi. All night. That's why I didn't come for you this morning.

His frank confession stuns Sun-Mi ...

Sun-Mi.............. W-what? You ... you and ... Young-Mi? How could you do that?!

Woo-Jin is unapologetic.

Woo-Jin............ It's just what happened.

Sun-Mi.............. Things like that don't 'just happen' ... She seduced you just to spite me, right?

Woo-Jin............ It's not like you think. Young-Mi still loves me.

Sun-Mi.............. You really believe that? ... Idiot!

Sun-Mi is beside herself now, rage and disappointment boiling over ...

Tears fill her eyes, threatening a flood, but she doesn't want him to see her crying.

Sun-Mi.............. Stop the car, I want to get off!

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi ...

Sun-Mi.............. Stop, or I'll ... I'll jump!

She releases her seat belt and reaches for the door handle, in a show of bravado.

Woo-Jin............ (anxiously) Don't!

Immediately, Woo-Jin slows the car and pulls over to the curb, braking hard to a stop.

They sit in silence, Sun-Mi sullen, Woo-Jin starting to feel regrets.

Large drops are splattering on the windscreen forcefully in the rising storm.

Woo-Jin............ Let me take you home. It's cold, you'll be soaked. You could get sick.

Sun-Mi.............. (snaps) NOW you care?! ... I'd rather die out there than stay in here another minute!

She opens the door, but he leans over and pulls it shut.

Woo-Jin............ Let me say something first. Please. Then, if you still want to, you can go.

Sun-Mi looks at the rain buffeting the windshield, thinks about how she is dressed, and relents.

Sun-Mi.............. All right. But no more lies!

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, night

Chinese takeout boxes and paper coffee cups clutter the coffee table in the office conference area.

Sun-Dal and Joo-Hee are eating from the containers with chopsticks.

Sun-Dal............ Those end-of-month financials are due tomorrow, too.

He points to the stack of papers on the desk and complains ...

Sun-Dal............ It'll probably take me all night.

Joo-Hee puts down her box and chopsticks, and looks at him with determination.

Joo-Hee............ Then we'd better get started now, right?

He laughs.

Sun-Dal............ Thanks, Joo-Hee. You're a lifesaver.

Joo-Hee............ Isn't that what friends do, help each other out?

A twisted grin appears on his face, and Sun-Dal nods.

Sun-Dal............ Yes. Let's do it.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's car, night

Parked at the curb, Woo-Jin and Sun-Mi continue discussing his overnight stay at Young-Mi's studio.

Woo-Jin............ I went just to talk with Young-Mi. To settle things. To say I was over her.

Sun-Mi.............. (scoldingly) Obviously, you weren't! ... I thought you were better than this.

Woo-Jin............ Please.

Sun-Mi.............. Did you tell her I'd left Director Yoon, to be with you?

Woo-Jin............ Yes. But she claimed that didn't matter, only that she'd made a mistake breaking up with me.

Sun-Mi.............. Then she wants to get back together with you?

Woo-Jin............ No. She said that could never happen.

Sun-Mi.............. (tersely) Then WHY?

Woo-Jin............ I don't know. Sometimes I feel I must be insane, but I can't help myself.

He sighs deeply.

Woo-Jin............ Honestly, it's so confusing, but the truth is ...

He turns his head to look at Sun-Mi.

Woo-Jin............ Despite everything my head tells me, my heart still loves Young-Mi. I truly love her.

Listening to his heartfelt reflection, Sun-Mi's pique softens with empathy.

Sun-Mi.............. I know exactly how that is. My heart and my head are often at odds, too, over Senior.

He smiles with relief.

Woo-Jin............ Thanks for understanding. You're a real saint.

Hearing this, she glares at him ...

Sun-Mi.............. I'm not a saint, I'm still upset!

Tears wet her eyes again.

Sun-Mi.............. What you did humiliated me. Now I know why Young-Mi was gloating today.

Aware that his relapse had caused her pain, he hangs his head remorsefully.

Woo-Jin............ I'm sorry. Believe me, I never wanted to hurt you. You must hate me now.

Sun-Mi.............. I don't hate you. I'm just hurting because my pride was wounded.

She wipes her eyes, now resolute in her convictions.

Sun-Mi.............. But it only reinforces what has to be done. This isn't about me, but about helping you.

Woo-Jin............ No ... Let's stop this, Sun-Mi. I'll only keep hurting you.

Sun-Mi.............. That's why we need to stay closer together. All the time. So that this can't happen again.

Woo-Jin............ Caring for me 24/7 will wear you out.

She smiles.

Sun-Mi.............. Worrying about you 24/7 will wear me out even more!

He finally concedes ...

Woo-Jin............ All right, you win. Sun-Mi ... I don't deserve you.

Sun-Mi.............. But you have me, anyway. So let's move on, as if nothing happened, okay?

He looks at her, askance.

Woo-Jin............ Is that possible, to forgive someone like that?

Sun-Mi.............. Haven't you forgiven Young-Mi?

He nods, indicating his understanding for her struggle.

Woo-Jin............ Okay. Do you have a plan for tonight?

Sun-Mi.............. For tonight ... and every day for the next two months.

Her declaration surprises him.

Woo-Jin............ Do I have a say in those plans, too?

She thinks for a moment, then nods agreeably.

Sun-Mi.............. Only if you commit to seeing this through. Can I count on you, Oppa, like before?

He grins and nods.

Woo-Jin............ Yeah. Let's do this, like before.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, late night

Sun-Dal is at Hyung-Chul's desk, going through a report.

Stacks of paper are piled on the desk. Behind him, the wall clock shows 11:30 pm.

He yawns, reaches for his coffee cup, and finds it empty.

Sun-Dal............ Joo-Hee, I'm going out for more coffee. Do you want some?

When she doesn't answer, he looks over at the conference seating area.

Joo-Hee is slumped over to the side, her head resting on the cushioned arm of the couch.

He gets up and walks over, crouching down near her.

Sun-Dal............ (quietly) Joo-Hee?

She stirs when he says her name, but doesn't open her eyes.

Sun-Dal grins, then takes off his jacket and places it over her protectively.

He walks back to the desk and picks up his cup, then exits the office.

As the door closes, the click of the latch alerts Joo-Hee.

Finding Sun-Dal's jacket covering her, she smiles, and closes her eyes again.

SCENE: Ski Resort, night

SCENE: Outside the resort hotel, midnight

Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin are amidst a crowd of holiday revelers, counting down the seconds to the New Year.

Crowd............... Five! ... Four! ... Three! ... Two! ... One!

Large fireworks explode overhead in a dazzling display of pyrotechnics, their flashes intermittently illuminating the scene.

Awed, Sun-Mi watches the sky as the crowd mills around them, cheering and clapping.

She links her arm around Woo-Jin's.

Sun-Mi.............. (enthusiastically) Wow! ... Isn't this fantastic?!

He is less enthralled.

Woo-Jin............ Umm ... Yes.

Turning toward Woo-Jin, Sun-Mi delivers a brief kiss to his cheek.

Woo-Jin looks at her with a questioning expression.

Smiling mischievously, she explains ...

Sun-Mi.............. It's English style, for good luck in the New Year.

SCENE: In a hotel room, Sydney, midnight

Hyung-Chul sits in a darkened hotel room, watching the fireworks display over Sydney's harbor.

In one hand he holds a drink, in the other a half-smoked cigarette, his face contemplative.

Hyung-Chul....... (V.O) Is she watching fireworks, too, thinking of me?

The ring of his mobile phone interrupts Hyung-Chul's musings.

Taking a final drag on the cigarette, he grinds the butt in an ashtray on the table beside him, and picks up the phone.

Flipping it open, he puts it to his ear.

Hyung-Chul....... Yes?

Joo-Hee............ (V.O) It's me. Happy New Year.

Hyung-Chul....... Same to you, Joo-Hee. But don't you have anything better to do than call me?

SCENE: Hotel lounge, Seoul, midnight

Joo-Hee and Sun-Dal are seated in a leather upholstered booth, drinks in front of them on the table.

Joo-Hee............ I'm not alone, but I knew you were.

Hyung-Chul....... (V.O) Thanks. Give Sun-Dal my regards.

She glances towards Sun-Dal.

He nods and raises his drink in a salute.

Joo-Hee............ He returns the sentiments.

Hyung-Chul....... So, how is Sun-Mi?

Joo-Hee............ Don't worry. We're taking good care of her.

Hyung-Chul....... Anything ... unusual?

Joo-Hee............ No ... But now that you mentioned, she asked for a three-day holiday.

Hyung-Chul....... Why?

Joo-Hee turns to Sun-Dal ...

Joo-Hee............ He wants to know why.

Sun-Dal motions for her to hand him the phone. He takes it and answers to Hyung-Chul ...

Sun-Dal............ Sun-Mi said she was going up to Vivaldi Park, She wanted to think some things over.

Hyung-Chul....... That's odd, Sun-Mi never skied before. Why now?

Sun-Dal............ She didn't say. Is it important?

Hyung-Chul....... No. Just forget it.

Sun-Dal............ Hey ... when are you coming back? I could use a few days off, too!

Hyung-Chul....... When I return, you and Joo-Hee can both have a week off, at the Company's expense.

Sun-Dal's eyes perk up when he hears this.

But Joo-Hee overheard, and frowns at Hyung-Chul's attempt to meddle in her love life.

Joo-Hee............ Just so you know, I'll spend my week at a spa, pampering myself ... no men allowed!

SCENE: Outside the ski resort hotel, midnight

The booms of exploding fireworks and crowd noises fill the scene with anticipation of the grand finale ...

Sun-Mi joins in the applause.

After the last spark has faded, she turns to Woo-Jin ...

Sun-Mi.............. This is so nice. I'm glad we came here together.

Woo-Jin............ We should go in now.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. I'm tired.

They start off, walking slowly toward their condo building.

Woo-Jin............ You did well today, for your first time on the slopes. You were never that athletic before.

Sun-Mi.............. It's because I have a good teacher, that's why ...

She smiles and slips her hand into the crook of his elbow.

Sun-Mi.............. I didn't realize how much fun skiing is. I can't wait to go out again in the morning!

Woo-Jin............ You need to be cautious, Sun-Mi, and not overdo it, until your body is stronger.

She frowns petulantly at his implication ...

Sun-Mi.............. Why do men think that women are so fragile?

Woo-Jin............ It's a fact. They just are.

His blatant bias irks her.

Sun-Mi.............. I mean, women can do almost anything men do, even while having babies, too!

Woo-Jin............ Okay, but I was talking about you. Wasn't your stomach bothering you before?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, but that mostly went away after I stopped drinking so much coffee at the office ...

He chuckles, knowing that with her mind made up, he'll never persuade her otherwise.

Woo-Jin............ Okay, we'll hit the slopes first thing.

Sun-Mi.............. (smugly) That's better.

They walk in silence for a few more steps.

She takes a deep breath, signaling she is about to bring up a serious matter ...

Sun-Mi.............. Our two months will end soon. We need to talk about where to go next.

Woo-Jin............ Well, for one, I feel much stronger now. Because of you.

Sun-Mi.............. What about your feelings for Young-Mi?

Woo-Jin............ I think I can handle those now. I'll be all right.

Sun-Mi.............. Are you sure?

Woo-Jin............ You can go back to Director Yoon, knowing that you did a good job, and that I'm grateful.

Sun-Mi.............. That ...

She sighs deeply.

Sun-Mi.............. I feel anxious. When Senior returns, will he still feel the same?

Woo-Jin............ What did he say to you before?

FLASHBACK [Previous scene in this episode, on the MBS rooftop]

Sun-Mi.............. If the only way to make Woo-Jin forget Young-Mi, is by taking her place in his heart, I'll do that.

Hyung-Chul....... Until that happens, I won't give up. Like I said, I'll wait for you ... I promise!

Sun-Mi.............. I appreciate that, Senior. But I won't hold you to that promise.

Sun-Mi.............. That he would wait for me, unless I married you.

Woo-Jin............ There's your answer. Director Yoon is an honorable man. He'll keep his promise.

Sun-Mi.............. A promise that I said he didn't have to keep. And why would he, after what I did?

She lowers her eyes, sighing.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm a shameless person. I wouldnt blame him.

Woo-Jin stops and turns to embrace Sun-Mi.

Woo-Jin............ You've done nothing to be ashamed of. If Director Yoon won't accept you back, then ...

He loosens his arms and holds her away from himself.

Cupping her chin with his fingers, he raises it so she is looking up at him, into his eyes.

Woo-Jin............ I promise, I won't leave you in the lurch. In that case, Sun-Mi ... I'll marry you.

SCENE: Gimpo airport, morning

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning

Sun-Dal looks across the desk that he'd just vacated yesterday.

Sun-Dal............ Glad to be back?

Hyung-Chul....... It's nice being in a familiar place again. How did things go?

Sun-Dal............ Didn't you read my reports?

Hyung-Chul....... Of course. But I'm not talking about business ...

He winks.

Hyung-Chul....... How are you and Joo-Hee coming along?

Sun-Dal............ (shrugs) What did you expect? Still the 'ice queen' as always.

Hyung-Chul laughs.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't give up yet. I predict this Spring will bring a thaw in that icy indifference.

Sun-Dal............ What about you and Sun-Mi?

A frown quickly replaces Hyung-Chul's smile.

Hyung-Chul....... Apparently that's turning into an extended Winter season.

Sun-Dal............ You two haven't talked yet?

Hyung-Chul....... Not since before I left. It's up to Sun-Mi now, what happens. All I can do now is wait.

SCENE: MBS canteen, afternoon

Sun-Mi is at the canteen vending machine, when Woo-Jin walks up.

She looks up and smiles.

Sun-Mi.............. You're prompt. Coffee?

She hands him the cup, then puts coins in for another.

Sun-Mi.............. And tea, for me.

Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin go to sit at a table by the windows.

Woo-Jin............ Why did you want to see me?

Sun-Mi.............. How would you like to speak at a seminar on broadcasting journalism careers?

Woo-Jin............ Where?

Sun-Mi.............. At my Uni. I was invited to present at one of the sessions, so I volunteered for both of us.

Woo-Jin............ Why would a bunch of college girls listen to me? I'm just a cameraman.

Sun-Mi.............. Correction. A photo journalist.

Her eyes twinkle with mirth ...

Sun-Mi.............. Anyway, a handsome guy like you will have no trouble keeping their attention.

He looks at her, incredulous.

Woo-Jin............ What? You're using me as eye candy?

Sun-Mi.............. Well ... you said that, not me.

They both share a laugh.

Woo-Jin............ Okay, I'll do it.

She leans forward and pats his hand affectionately.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks. I knew I could count on you ...

SCENE: MBS conference room, afternoon

The Eve's Morning team is gathering in a conference room, settling into their seats around the table.

But instead of taking his usual seat at the head, the PD sits down next to Ki-Jong.

PD................... Listen up, everyone! Director Yoon will join us in a few minutes.

Sun-Dal............ It's his first day back. He'll want to get a measure of our progress ...

He pauses to look around the room, to put emphasis on his next words ...

Sun-Dal............ Everyone, let's all be especially sharp today. Okay?

All.................... (half-heartedly) Yes.

Sun-Dal shakes his head at their tepid response.

Sun-Dal............ You call that sharp? Let's try again.

All.................... (enthusiastically) YES!!

SCENE: MBS canteen, afternoon

Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin are still in the canteen, talking ...

Sun-Mi.............. Tonight, we'll go to Bucheon after work, to talk with my old prof about the seminar.

Woo-Jin............ See you in the park garage, the usual time?

Sun-Mi.............. Actually, my taping session is delayed, so let's meet at the main entrance, an hour later, okay?

He nods.

Woo-Jin............ Yes, ma'am.

Sun-Mi's mobile phone rings -- signaling an incoming message.

She flips open the phone, looks at the message, then up at Woo-Jin again.

Sun-Mi.............. That was Jin-Soo. I'm late for a meeting ... Gotta run!

She stands and hurries off down the corridor, the sound of her high heels fading.

Woo-Jin looks out the window thoughtfully, sipping his coffee.

SCENE: MBS conference room, afternoon

The Eve's Morning team is gathered around the conference room table, waiting for the meeting to begin.

The door opens and Hyung-Chul enters.

Everyone starts to rise, but he motions for them to stay in their seats as he takes his place at the head of the table.

Scanning the room, he sees that everyone is present, except Sun-Mi.

Hyung-Chul....... Where is Announcer Jin Sun-Mi?

Male staff......... I saw her in the canteen with one of the cameramen, as we were coming up.

Hearing this, Hyung-Chul's mouth tightens, but he says nothing.

Writer............... (grumbling) Jin Sun-Mi is always the last to ...

She stops when Jin-Soo discretely taps her arm with his pen.

Jin-Soo............. There's still time left. She'll be here.

As if in response to his confident assertion, the conference room door opens.

At the sound, everyone turns to look.

Sun-Mi appears, flushed and out of breath. She stops to close the door behind her, then turns into the room.

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry, I ...

The words choke off in her throat when she sees Hyung-Chul is at the head of the table.

Hyung-Chul....... Announcer Jin, was there a problem?

Faced with his stiff expression and harsh one, she fumbles her words.

Sun-Mi.............. Er .... No. I--I was preoccupied, and forgot the time. Sorry I'm late.

Hyung-Chul....... Since we hadn't started yet, technically you're not. Please take a seat.

Sun-Mi heads for the last chair on the far side of the conference table, sensing Hyung-Chul's eyes following her.

After she sits down, he starts speaking.

Hyung-Chul....... Thanks to all of your hard work, our show had more success than expected last year.

....................... However, this year expectations will be greater, and the competition for ratings stronger.

He looks directly at Sun-Mi, as he continues ...

Hyung-Chul....... Each person must focus strictly on their work, if you want to survive here ...

The burden of his tacit disapproval gnaws in Sun-Mi's gut, making her queasy.

Hyung-Chul....... Any part that is weak, undermines the total effort. I hope I can count on all of your efforts.

Sun-Dal............ Okay, team, what do we say to the Director?

All.................... (enthusiastically) YES!!

Everyone applauds.

PD................... Shall we get down to business?

SCENE: MBS main entrance, afternoon

At the main entrance lobby, a tall, stunningly attractive woman enters through the revolving doors ...

She garners immediate interest, heads turning to look.

First recognition sets in, then curiosity ... as to why she is here, and who she might be meeting.

As if used to being the center of attention, the woman struts the main lobby like it's a fashion runway ...

Entering a lift, she waits in front. Everyone else in the lift is watching her, awed.

The lift doors close.

SCENE: MBS conference room, afternoon

The Eve's Morning team meeting continues ...

PD................... What is coming next in the business corner, Kyung-Hee?

Kyung-Hee........ A series on new mothers who were successful in continuing their careers.

....................... Our focus is how they overcame employer opposition, and dealt with a shortage of good childcare.

Hyung-Chul....... Yes, I've read that this is becoming a bigger issue. Good topic.

PD................... The first segment will air next Monday?

Kyung-Hee........ Yes. We'll finish production tomorrow.

PD................... (nods) Okay. Who's next?

Sun-Dal............ We haven't heard from Sun-Mi yet.

PD................... Right ... Jin Sun-Mi?

Silence.

PD................... Announcer Jin, your corner?

All heads turn to look toward the far end of the table.

Sun-Mi is bent forward, head cradled in her hand.

Jin-Soo bumps her arm with his elbow.

Jin-Soo............. (whispering) Psst ... Sun-Mi! Wake up!

But the PD quickly realizes that she is not asleep, but ill.

PD................... Jin Sun-Mi, are you all right?

Sun-Mi sits up straight, a distressed expression revealing her discomfort.

Concerned about her condition, Hyung-Chul chimes in.

Hyung-Chul....... Announcer Jin, if you're not well ...

But she quickly interrupts, speaking firmly ...

Sun-Mi.............. I'm sorry. It's nothing. What was the question?

PD................... About your corner?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes ... Next week I'm continuing to cover new gallery and museum exhibits opening this season.

PD................... Isn't it becoming repetitive? Not everyone is interested in that. Don't you have anything else?

Sun-Mi.............. This is a slow time for concerts, performances, and new movies.

Sensing an opportunity, Young-Mi steps in ...

Young-Mi.......... I have an idea. Let's run a series on the children's charities supported by the Spring Charity Gala.

Unhappy that Young-Mi is butting in, Sun-Mi defends her turf ...

Sun-Mi.............. But the Gala is months away. It's too early for that.

Young-Mi.......... Not so. By starting now, we can reach potential new donors, before they commit this year's funds.

Sun-Mi.............. Still, we can't just ...

Hyung-Chul cuts in to quell the argument ...

Hyung-Chul....... I agree with Announcer Huh. We need wider awareness for this good cause.

Sun-Dal............ It's not our ordinary program content, but Director Yoon has a point.

Around the table, nodding heads show that consensus is building around the Director's perception.

PD................... Anyone else have an opinion?

He waits only briefly.

PD................... Okay. Then let's make a full effort, and do it right. Sun-Mi?

Sun-Mi.............. (reluctantly) Yes.

However, Hyung-Chul has another plan in mind.

Hyung-Chul....... Just a minute ... It was Young-Mi's idea. Shouldn't she produce it, instead of Sun-Mi?

His suggestion stuns everyone. Heads turn ... looking to see Sun-Mi's reaction at what appears to be a direct snub.

But he immediately lays out his case ...

Hyung-Chul....... Young-Mi produced last year's Gala, and was the emcee, while Sun-Mi directed the performances.

....................... The result was a record for donations.

Skepticism quickly segues into support.

Sun-Dal............ That's right. Why change a winning formula?

Jin-Soo............. (excitedly) Yeah! Wasn't it sooo funny watching Sun-Mi waddling about in that bee costume!?

Heedless that Sun-Mi is red with embarrassment next to him, he laughs loudly and rambles on ...

Jin-Soo............. If Sun-Mi wore that costume again on the program, wouldn't that be a riot?!

Sun-Mi glares at him, appalled at the idea.

When no one else laughs, Jin-Soo realizes he's put his foot in his mouth, and immediately backtracks.

Jin-Soo............. Of course, I meant, only if she wanted to ...

Hyung-Chul tactfully changes the subject back to the main discussion.

Hyung-Chul....... How about it Young-Mi, will you accept this?

Flush with victory over Sun-Mi, she tries not to come across as too arrogant ...

Young-Mi.......... I'll be happy to do it, since it's for the children. Er ... with Sun-Mi's help, that is.

Hyung-Chul....... Sun-Mi?

She clenches her teeth at having to defer to Young-Mi again, but sees no other choice.

Sun-Mi.............. Sure. For the children.

Hyung-Chul....... That's the attitude.

He directs his next words to the entire team.

Hyung-Chul....... Let's all take their attitude to heart and work together to do our best.

SCENE: Director Kim's office, afternoon

Director Kim is working at the conference table in his office, when his intercom buzzes.

He presses the TALK button.

Eun-Ki.............. Yes?

Secretary.......... Miss Park Su-Jin is here.

Eun-Ki.............. Send her in.

The door opens and Su-Jin walks in.

Eun-Ki stands to greet her, motioning with his hand to the chair on his right.

Eun-Ki.............. Welcome, Miss Park.

Su-Jin............... Thank you.

She joins him at the conference table.

Eun-Ki.............. If I may say so, you're even prettier in person. But you probably hear that all the time.

She laughs.

Su-Jin............... You're flattering me.

Eun-Ki.............. Not at all. Have you eaten yet? We could talk over dinner.

Su-Jin............... Thank you, but I have an appointment. Shall we get down to business? This project you mentioned?

Eun-Ki.............. Yes ... It's a new MBS program I'm working on, which I believe could benefit from your services.

Su-Jin............... Why would MBS look to a small startup, and not one of the established shops?

Eun-Ki.............. Because I want something unique, that those shops don't have to offer.

Su-Jin............... Despite our name, we're hardly unique in the business, by any means.

He smiles as he clarifies his objective.

Eun-Ki.............. It's not 'what' as much as 'who' that is important.

She catches his intentions instantly.

Su-Jin............... You want my name? Why?

Eun-Ki.............. This program will have the highest quality production values and content.

....................... An association with one of Korea's top fashion models would lend a certain cachet.

He picks up a pen and writes on a slip of paper, then hands it to her.

Eun-Ki.............. I'm prepared to make a generous offer. I hope it is satisfactory.

When Su-Jin sees what he wrote, she tries to cover her amazement.

Eun-Ki.............. What do you say?

She ponders the offer, but not for long ...

Su-Jin............... I'll need a full season guaranteed, and complete creative control.

Eun-Ki.............. Fair enough ...

He extends his hand.

Eun-Ki.............. Shall we call it a deal?

She grasps his hand firmly, and they shake.

Eun-Ki.............. I'm looking forward to the start of a profitable relationship, for both of us.

SCENE: MBS corridor, afternoon

The door to the Ladies' Washroom opens, and Sun-Mi comes out.

She is surprised to find that Young-Mi is waiting in the corridor.

When she sees Sun-Mi, Young-Mi steps forward.

Young-Mi.......... Jin Sun-Mi ...

In a hurry to get to her taping session, Sun-Mi tries to brush Young-Mi off.

Sun-Mi.............. Are you here to gloat? Or just passing by on your way to the broom closet for your ride?

Young-Mi.......... Ha-ha. Very funny.

She forces a strained smile.

Young-Mi.......... So you know, I put the bee suit on order from the costume shop, to spare you the trouble.

Sun-Mi.............. Do you expect me to thank you?

Young-Mi.......... Just give a good performance again. That's all you have to do.

Sun-Mi's mouth tightens.

Sun-Mi.............. (coldly) If you have nothing else, I'll be leaving first.

Sun-Mi takes a step to pass by, but what Young-Mi says next tops Sun-Mi in her tracks ...

Young-Mi.......... By the way, I'm 'borrowing' Woo-Jin from you to tape the segments, starting tomorrow.

Sun-Mi.............. Why him? Can't you find anyone else who will work with you?

Young-Mi.......... Woo-Jin is the best MBS has. Don't the children deserve the best?

Sun-Mi doesn't reply, knowing the question is facetious.

Young-Mi.......... Or you can take this up with Director Yoon.

Sun-Mi glares at Young-Mi, but not wanting to face Hyung-Chul over a tiff involving Woo-Jin, she relents.

Sun-Mi.............. Fine.

Young-Mi.......... Don't worry. I don't want him permanently. I have my sights set higher.

Sun-Mi.............. Then why are you doing this? What are you scheming now?

Young-Mi ignores the questions.

Young-Mi.......... I have to go, to get ready for the news.

She turns her back to Sun-Mi, walking away at a leisurely pace.

Frustrated, Sun-Mi fumes, shooting frustrated darts with her eyes at her rival's back.

SCENE: In a pub near MBS, afternoon

Alone, with time to kill while waiting for Sun-Mi to finish her recording session, Woo-Jin falls back into old habits.

Grasping a drink with one hand, he holds a wallet photo of himself with Young-Mi.

Gazing forlornly at the relic of better days, he regrets, wondering what went wrong ...

Woo-Jin............ What do I have to do, Young-Mi, to win back your heart?

He puts down the photo, checks his watch, noting the time, and refills his glass ...

As he pours, he hears a familiar voice in his head ... scolding and fraught with worry ...

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) Please don't drink! You promised!

He raises the glass, as if making a toast ...

Woo-Jin............ It's just one, Sun-Mi. Only one. You don't need to worry.

Then he downs the alcohol in one long draught.

SCENE: MBS radio studio, afternoon

Sun-Mi is speaking into the studio microphone ...

Sun-Mi.............. I ... um ... I hope today's program encouraged you. This ends our ... time for today ...

The program bumper music, Brian Crain's instrumental, Northern Lights, fades in.

Sun-Mi.............. Join me again to--tomorrow, as we share the joys and sorrows of life and love together.

....................... I'm Jin Sun-Mi, and this is Musical Postcards, MBS Radio 91.9 FM4U.

From the control room, the Assistant PD's voice comes on Sun-Mi's headphones ...

Assistant........... That was a bit rough.

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry.

Assistant........... Let's redo the entire segment, from the last song.

Sun-Mi glances up at the wall clock. Although the time is running late, she nods as she flips back in her script.

Sun-Mi.............. Okay.

Assistant........... Ready? ... 3 ... 2 ...

But the PD interrupts first ...

PD................... Actually, there's no need. We'll edit it. Sun-Mi, you can go now.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. Thank you for all your hard work.

She takes off the headphones, stands up, and grabs her work tote.

Glancing at the clock again, Sun-Mi hurries toward the studio door.

After the door closes, the Assistant speaks out a complaint to the PD ...

Assistant........... You let her leave early, but keep me late to clean up her mistakes?

PD................... Didn't you get the memo?

Assistant........... What memo?

PD................... From the Director ... strictly confidential ...

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, evening

Hyung-Chul is reviewing program ratings, when he hears voices outside his office.

Miss Lee........... Wait! You can't just go in ...

Woman............ Why not? Of course he'll see me.

Hyung-Chul looks up, to see Park Su-Jin standing in the open doorway.

She looks at him with a wide smile.

Su-Jin............... Long time, no see.

Miss Lee appears in the doorway behind Su-Jin, apologetic for failing her role as a gatekeeper...

Miss Lee........... I'm sorry, Director.

Hyung-Chul....... Not a problem, Miss Lee ...

He glances at the clock.

Hyung-Chul....... It's late, you can knock off now.

Miss Lee dips her head respectfully.

Miss Lee........... Good night, Director.

After Miss Lee steps out, Su-Jin approaches the desk.

Hyung-Chul stands as she nears, curious about the reason for her sudden appearance.

He recalls the adverse circumstances of their parting years ago, when he was living in London ...

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 4, in Hyung-Chul's London flat]

Su-Jin............... I swear, Yoon Hyung-Chul, you'll pay for this, bastard!

Hyung-Chul....... I never expected to see you again, Su-Jin.

Su-Jin............... Me, too. But life is filled with surprises. Right?

Hyung-Chul....... (nodding) It certainly is. Why are you here?

Su-Jin............... Do you have time for a drink? We can catch up ...

SCENE: MBS main entrance, evening

Woo-Jin's blue Matiz drives slowly up to the MBS main lobby entrance and stops.

Alighting from the car, he looks toward the revolving doors, then checks his watch.

Taking his mobile from his jacket pocket, he makes a call ...

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) Yes? Woo-Jin?

Woo-Jin............ (teasingly) Hey, Jin Sun-Mi! Are you standing me up today?

He laughs.

Woo-Jin............ Seriously, if we don't leave soon, we'll be late for the meeting ...

SCENE: MBS lift lobby, evening

Sun-Mi is waiting for the lift, phone pressed to her ear.

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry. The taping went late ... I'm on 6F. It'll take a couple of minutes to come down.

Woo-Jin............ (V.O) Okay, see you then.

She puts the phone back into her bag and impatiently presses the call button again.

Sun-Mi.............. (irritated) Why is it taking so long?

SCENE: MBS lift, evening

Hyung-Chul and Su-Jin are taking the lift down together, passing the ninth floor.

Hyung-Chul....... What brought you to MBS? I didn't know we were interviewing models now.

Su-Jin............... I didn't come as a model, but as a CEO.

Hyung-Chul....... You have your own company?

She smiles.

Su-Jin............... Even top models have a short shelf life, and have to reinvent themselves.

She takes a business card from her purse and hands it to him.

He reads the card aloud ...

Hyung-Chul....... Unique Sophistique? What is that?

Su-Jin............... After an honest appraisal, I realized that looking beautiful, and living stylishly, was all I knew well.

She smiles self-deprecatingly.

Su-Jin............... So I decided to try making a living by helping others do the same.

Hyung-Chul....... How is it going?

Su-Jin............... Harder than I thought. That's why I'm here, to see one of your executives.

Hyung-Chul....... Who was that?

Su-Jin............... Director Kim Eun-Ki.

Hyung-Chul....... (jokingly) Oh? I always did question his taste in suits.

She smiles at the joke, but replies seriously ...

Su-Jin............... I just signed up for consulting on a new program, Cultural Theatre.

Hyung-Chul....... (frowning) I see.

Su-Jin............... Oh? Something wrong?

Hyung-Chul....... Nothing. It's just that Director Kim and I don't always see eye-to-eye on matters.

Su-Jin............... If it's a problem for you, I can cancel the contract.

Hyung-Chul....... No. This is a good opportunity. Don't let our company's politics affect you.

Su-Jin............... We'd have more time to discuss this further, if that drink extended into dinner?

He raises an eyebrow at her obvious ploy, but is also curious to learn about Director Kim's plans ...

Hyung-Chul....... Any place in particular?

The lift bell chimes.

Hyung-Chul looks up, and sees they have stopped at the sixth floor.

The doors slide open ... but no one is waiting in the lobby to board.

Hyung-Chul pushes the Door Close button. The doors shut and the lift resumes its descent.

SERIES OF SCENES: Various locations in MBS, evening

Having given up on waiting for the lift, Sun-Mi is rushing down the stairs.

Meanwhile, continuing down, the lift passes the third floor.

Exiting the stairway, Sun-Mi passes through the empty atrium at a jog.

The lift bell chimes as it arrives on the main floor.

Panting heavily as she runs, Sun-Mi is passing through the main floor lift lobby.

The lift doors open just as a blur in baby blue speeds past.

Hyung-Chul motions for Su-Jin to go first, then follows her out.

They head for the main entrance, walking side-by-side through the empty lobby.

After a few steps, Su-Jin slips her hand around Hyung-Chul's arm.

He glances over momentarily, but says nothing.

SCENE: MBS main entrance, evening

Outside, Sun-Mi sees Woo-Jin waiting by his car. She is tiring, her steps flagging.

Forcing a burst of speed, anxious to get going, she waves and calls to get his attention.

Sun-Mi.............. Oppa! Let's go!

Woo-Jin circles around the front of the car to open the door for her.

But in her haste, Sun-Mi trips at the curb. Losing her balance, she pitches forward.

Sun-Mi.............. (frantically) Oh! ... oh!

Instinctively flailing her arms, she releases her bag. It hits the pavement with a thud, spilling out the contents.

Hearing her cry, Woo-Jin pivots just as Sun-Mi's momentum carries her into his arms.

Unexpectedly, they find themselves in a mutual embrace, eye to eye, mouth to mouth ... 'kissing close'.

SCENE: MBS main entrance, evening

At the lobby doors, Hyung-Chul courteously allows Su-Jin to go ahead.

She waits for him, linking their arms again as they head toward the car park.

Off to the side, Hyung-Chul notices a couple embracing.

Thinking he recognizes them, he stops to look.

Unaware that they are being observed, Woo-Jin makes light of what might have been a serious fall.

Woo-Jin............ Gee! Are you that excited to see me, that you can't wait?

She plays along, bantering back ...

Sun-Mi.............. Don't you know? When we're apart, how much I long to be in your arms.

They laugh as Woo-Jin gently helps Sun-Mi to steady herself on her own feet.

Woo-Jin............ Okay?

Sun-Mi nods.

Then with an impish grin, she impulsively stretches up and smacks a loud kiss on his cheek.

The impetuous move surprises Woo-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. That's for being you ... the person I can always trust to bein the right place, at the right time.

She beams brightly.

Sun-Mi.............. Now, I'll get my stuff, and let's go ... okay?

Woo-Jin releases her, and Sun-Mi crouches down to pick up her bag.

Turning to collect >some items, she belatedly notices that they have an audience ...

Then she looks up ... and sees who has been watching.

Sun-Mi gasps when she recognizes Su-Jin, painfully recalling their first encounter ... and raising new questions ...

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 4, in Hyung-Chul's London flat]
