Act 1

SCENE: Announcer 1 Team office, evening

After the News At Nine broadcast, Joo-Hee remains in the vacant office, sitting at her desk.

Still unsettled about seeing Park Su-Jin with Hyung-Chul, she ponders what to do as she thinks back ...

FLASHBACK [Inside Hyung-Chul's London flat -- Summer, 1994]

Traveling to London to be with Hyung-Chul for his birthday, Joo-Hee takes a cab directly to his flat in the London Docklands.

Arriving at the apartment, she bursts in, unannounced ...

Joo-Hee............ Hello? ... Oppa? ... The door was open, so I just let myself ... in ...

He voice dies off, as staring her in the face is confirmation of her worst fears.

Hearing Joo-Hee's voice, Hyung-Chul turns to look ...

Hyung-Chul....... Oh, Joo-Hee -- you're early!

....................... This is Park Su-Jin, the daughter of my Mother's good friend. She's staying here, with me, this summer.

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 02, at the River Thames -- Spring, 1995]

Joo-Hee takes a break from her newscaster duties during a London trip to visit Hyung-Chul.

They go out on what she hopes might become is a romantic stroll along the Thames.

Joo-Hee............ Don't you see all the scars on my heart?

Hyung-Chul....... Im not really sure what love is.

Joo-Hee............ When I look at you, a sadness comes up from the bottom of my heart.

FLASHBACK [Scene from Episode 09, MBS rooftop -- Spring, 1999]

Coming up onto the MBS rooftop with Young-Mi, Joo-Hee is surprised to find Hyung-Chul with Sun-Mi.

After both Sun-Mi and Young-Mi go down first, she stays behind with Hyung-Chul, to talk.

Joo-Hee............ Was Sun-Mi that girl you mentioned?

Hyung-Chul....... Yes.

Joo-Hee............ She looks good. I'll take care of her.

[ Sound of a ringing telephone ]

Joo-Hee snaps back to the present and picks up the handset.

Joo-Hee............ MBS Announcer 1 Team. Manager Yoo Joo-Hee speaking.

Director Yoo...... (V.O.) Your name's on my schedule for tomorrow.

....................... Since when does a daughter have to make an appointment to see her father?

Joo-Hee............ I didn't call as a daughter, but as a concerned stockholder.

Director Yoo...... I see. Want to clue me in?

Joo-Hee............ It's about the upcoming vote for CEO.

Director Yoo...... The Board is approving nominees at the next meeting.

Joo-Hee............ I know. I want to withhold our vote for Yoon Hyung-Chul ...

Director Yoo...... (sounding surprised) Is there some reason?

Joo-Hee............ I ... I'm not confident that he's the right person for the job.

Director Yoo...... Very well. Let's discuss this at length, later.

Joo-Hee............ Sure. Goodnight, Father.

Director Yoo...... Goodnight.

She hangs up the phone, and looks out the window, contemplating the darkness that reflects the coldness in her heart.

SCENE: Su-Jin's apartment, evening

Alone in her apartment, Su-Jin looks through old photos from her time in London.

She dwells fondly on a picture taken of Hyung-Chul and herself together at the River Thames.

Su-Jin............... (aloud to herself) Is there a way back to how things were before? Is it possible?

She picks up her drink and takes a long, slow swallow, savoring the flavor of the potent liquor.

Her face hardens as she recalls other, less pleasant memories ...

FLASHBACK [Living room in Hyung-Chul's London flat]

Su-Jin............... I'm here to deliver your birthday present in person.

Su-Jin............... Who's this girl? Someone you hired to do your cooking?

Hyung-Chul....... This is my good friend... Jin Sun-Mi.

FLASHBACK [Bedroom in Hyung-Chul's London flat]

Su-Jin............... I'll give you everything. I LOVE you! ... Why are you turning me away?

Hyung-Chul....... You call this love? Acting like a slut? ... It sickens me!

Su-Jin............... Do you hate me so much, that you have to humiliate me like this?

Hyung-Chul....... You've done that by yourself, Su-Jin. So just get out ...

Her face still burns crimson from the shame of that day, even though five years have passed.

Su-Jin............... (seething) Dump me again for another woman, and I swear I'll take my revenge, Yoon Hyung-Chul!

She tosses down the remainder of her drink, then flings the empty tumbler across the room.

It hits the wall with a violent crash of shattering glass.

Su-Jin............... This time there will be no forgiveness! You'll rue the day you crossed Park Su-Jin!

SCENE: Exterior of Woo-Jin's home, night

SCENE: Woo-Jin's living room, night

Sun-Mi looks down at the anklet she has just removed from her leg.

Sun-Mi.............. (aloud to herself) Woo-Jin ... This is the last time ...

Reaching down, she picks up the cup of hangover medicine.

Sun-Mi.............. Tonight, I'll give you everything, if that is what it takes to rescue you.

Padding quietly over to the bathroom door, she taps lightly.

Sun-Mi.............. Woo-Jin? The medicine is ready.

She hears his muffled reply through the closed door.

Woo-Jin............ (O.S.) I'll be out in a few minutes.

Sun-Mi.............. Sure. I'll go to your room, okay?

Sun-Mi.............. Okay.

SCENE: Exterior of Young-Mi's apartment building, night

SCENE: Young-Mi's bathroom, night

As Young-Mi primps in front of the bathroom mirror, she calls outside to Hyung-Chul ...

Young-Mi.......... Sorry it's taking so long, Director Yoon.

His voice comes back through the closed door ...

Hyung-Chul....... (O.S.) No hurry. The coffee's ready.

Young-Mi.......... I appreciate you staying to hear me out.

Hyung-Chul....... It's a supervisor's responsibility, to make an effort for his employees.

Young-Mi.......... I sense it's not just duty, but a sincere concern ...

She smiles, pleased that her scheme is working out.

Young-Mi.......... That's why I feel confident that I can show my true self to you ...

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, night

After finishing in the bathroom, Woo-Jin comes into his room.

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi?

She is sitting at the desk, and stands as he enters.

Sun-Mi.............. Your medicine is there.

She points to the bedside table.

He picks up the cup and takes a sip, making a face at the bitter taste.

Woo-Jin............ (jokingly) Why does it always taste so bad?

They share a laugh.

He puts the cup down again.

Woo-Jin............ It's late. We have work tomorrow.

But Sun-Mi is determined to resolve matters between them ...

Sun-Mi.............. We need to talk first.

Woo-Jin............ Can't it wait?

Sun-Mi.............. Since you're leaving tomorrow, this is our only chance before you go.

Woo-Jin............ (resigned sigh) Okay. What's so important?

Sun-Mi.............. Why are you drinking again? Didn't you say you were over Young-Mi?

Woo-Jin............ Don't get all worked up. It's not like you think.

Dismissing her concerns out of hand only rankles her further ...

Sun-Mi.............. How do you know what I think? Why shouldn't I be worried?

He tries again ...

Woo-Jin............ Fine. You've a right to worry. I shouldn't drink. But it's not Young-Mi's fault.

Invoking Young-Mi just inflames Sun-Mi more ...

Sun-Mi.............. Not Young-Mi's fault?! I'm tired of you making excuses for her!

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi, you just have to understand. The truth is ...

Sun-Mi.............. The truth is I DON'T understand! You see her as a woman, but not me? How am I lacking?!

Woo-Jin............ It's not that you're lacking, but that I see you ... differently.

Sun-Mi.............. Different? How? As your 'little sister'?! ... I'm not a child anymore!

Woo-Jin............ That's not what I meant.

Sun-Mi.............. Then what? Because Young-Mi is 'that' kind of woman? ... Well, I can be, too, if it's what you want!

Sun-Mi slips her suit jacket off, and turning, drapes it over the back of the chair.

Woo-Jin watches, wondering what she is doing, but when Sun-Mi unzips her skirt, he protests ...

Woo-Jin............ Don't!

Defiantly, Sun-Mi lets the skirt drop and steps out of it.

Leaving it on the floor, she turns back to face him, taking a step closer.

Sun-Mi.............. Tell me ... How do you see me now?

Shocked and angry, he shouts demands ...

Woo-Jin............ Get dressed, Sun-Mi! Stop this!

Her eyes flash resolutely as she argues back ...

Sun-Mi.............. I won't stop! ... I ... I'll go as far as I have to, until you accept me, too!

She grabs the bottom edge of her camisole, signaling that it could be next ...

SCENE: Young-Mi's studio, night

Waiting for Young-Mi, Hyung-Chul sits in her desk chair, browsing through a magazine.

He hears the bathroom door latch, and turns to look.

When she steps out, his eyes widen with surprise.

Seeing his reaction, she self-consciously explains ...

Young-Mi.......... My clothes reeked. This dress is all I had in the bathroom to change into.

Young-Mi.......... I was trying it on the other day, to decide if I could wear it for the gala again.

She lowers her eyes apologetically.

Young-Mi.......... I'm sorry. I know it reminds you of Sun-Mi. Let me get another dress out, and change.

Stiffly, he brushes aside her concern ...

Hyung-Chul....... That's not necessary. Please sit, and have your coffee.

Passing close by Hyung-Chul, Young-Mi sits on the bed, facing him.

He hands her a cup.

She takes a sip and smiles.

Young-Mi.......... It's very good. thank you.

Hyung-Chul....... I thought women didn't wear the same dress twice for a formal occasion.

Young-Mi.......... That's a luxury I can't afford, Director Yoon.

Hyung-Chul....... Then let me buy a dress for you.

Young-Mi.......... I'm sorry, but I can't ask you to do that.

Hyung-Chul....... It's an important event, and you're one of the main faces of the Company.

Young-Mi smiles -- her scheme is working exactly as she'd hoped.

Young-Mi.......... Thank you, Director.

Hyung-Chul....... I'll call the boutique, and make arrangements.

Young-Mi.......... Actually, could you come to help me choose instead?

Her unusual request rouses his suspicions ...

Hyung-Chul....... Is that necessary?

Young-Mi.......... You have such good taste. You chose this dress for Sun-Mi, right?

He nods.

Young-Mi.......... Since you're paying, you should have the final say. I wouldn't feel comfortable, any other way.

Her reasoning seems innocent, so he agrees.

Hyung-Chul....... Very well ... Now, what is it you were going to tell me?

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi pulls up the camisole, showing her midriff, then stops for Woo-Jin's reaction.

Contrary to her expectations, he neither caves to her demand, nor tries to stop her, instead giving her carte blanche ...

Woo-Jin............ Go on ... What are you waiting for?

Startled by his flip-flop, Sun-Mi flounders for a response ...

Sun-Mi.............. What -- what did you say? You want me to take this off?

Her bluff called, Sun-Mi gapes at him unbelievingly, abandoning her ultimatum.

A sly grin plays on his lips.

Woo-Jin............ You shouldn't make threats you don't actually intend to follow through on.

Sun-Mi.............. (grumbling) How did you know?

He chuckles.

Woo-Jin............ Your face always gives you away. Besides, you're not that kind of person. So why pretend?

Sun-Mi.............. After we'd come so far, I couldn't let you go back to drinking.

Woo-Jin............ This was all because of me?

Sun-Mi.............. I thought if I did something shocking, it would break your fixation on Young-Mi.

She looks at him, her eyes imploring his understanding.

Sun-Mi.............. Your mom was disconsolate. I had to try and save you from yourself.

She looks away, her face flushing embarrassment.

Sun-Mi.............. But now, I feel like an idiot. What was I doing?

He sighs guiltily.

Woo-Jin............ I wasn't going to say anything to you, but now I think I should.

Sun-Mi.............. About what?

Woo-Jin looks directly into her eyes, so she can see he is serious, as he reveals ...

Woo-Jin............ It's not Young-Mi who I'm drinking to forget ... it's you.

SCENE: Young-Mi's studio, night

Young-Mi sets her coffee cup on the bedside table.

Young-Mi.......... I wanted to apologize for my behavior tonight. It wasn't my best face I showed you.

Hyung-Chul....... No matter, I've already forgotten it.

Young-Mi.......... I'm not a someone who can easily share the one she loves with another person.

Hyung-Chul....... Aren't you're mistaken? That's not how I understand the situation between Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin.

Young-Mi.......... You actually think that Sun-Mi is helping Woo-Jin recover from my breaking his heart?

Looking down at her hands, folded in her lap, she continues ...

Young-Mi.......... The truth is not that simple. Yes, I did break up with Woo-Jin. But I am a victim, too.

....................... There's a deep bond between Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin, a link that is inviolable.

....................... Woo-Jin started drinking, not because I broke up with him, but because Sun-Mi is with you.

Surprised at hearing Young-Mi's version of things for the first time, Hyung-Chul listens, carrying doubts.

A tear wends down Young-Mi's cheek.

Young-Mi.......... Waiting, hoping, praying ... arguing, fighting ... yes, and loving, too ... in the end, it was all futile ...

He shifts uneasily in the chair as she bares the raw pain of her life.

Young-Mi.......... All my efforts failed to break that bond.

She looks up at Hyung-Chul again.

Young-Mi.......... My concern is that you're suffering over Sun-Mi -- as I suffered over Woo-Jin -- for nothing.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't assume your experience is the same as mine. We're very different people.

She nods, acknowledging his point.

Young-Mi.......... Sorry, I was being presumptuous.

Hyung-Chul....... From the beginning, I knew that Sun-Mi had deep feelings for Woo-Jin.

....................... Still, I decided to give my love to her, without expecting anything in return.

He sets his half-empty coffee cup on the desk.

Hyung-Chul....... For me, love means giving everything, taking the risk regardless of the outcome.

....................... That's what makes loving someone so precious ... when they also love you in return.

Young-Mi.......... You're right. Our experiences are very different.

Hyung-Chul....... I'm sorry for your pain. But I hope that thought will give you some solace.

He stands up.

Hyung-Chul....... I should leave now.

She stands, too.

Young-Mi.......... Thank you, Director. I'll see you off.

Hyung-Chul....... There's no need. Please rest.

She nods, obediently remaining by the bed as he steps toward the exit door.

Hyung-Chul....... I'll see you at the office. Do call about the dress.

Young-Mi.......... Yes, Director.

Hyung-Chul....... Good night.

Young-Mi bows respectively as Hyung-Chul walks out, and closes the door.

She sits on the bed again, upset at her failure to make further inroads.

[ sound of phone ringing ]

Young-Mi reaches over to pick up the handset.

Young-Mi.......... Hello?

Eun-Ki.............. (V.O.) You called?

Young-Mi.......... I fulfilled my part of our bargain. When will you keep yours?

Eun-Ki.............. Until Yoo Joo-Hee leaves the slot, there's nothing I can do.

Young-Mi.......... When will that be?

Eun-Ki.............. Since her move to London was postponed indefinitely, that's uncertain.

Young-Mi.......... Then you won't promise me anything?

Eun-Ki.............. At this time, no. Bu we'll keep in contact. That's all.

Eun-Ki hangs up, leaving Young-Mi fuming ...

Young-Mi.......... He's useless to me! They're all useless! I'll have to make my own way now ...

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi can't believe what Woo-Jin has told her ...

Woo-Jin............ (V.O.) It's not Young-Mi, but you, that I'm drinking to forget.

Her mind in a daze, she stares blankly at Woo-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. What are you saying?

Woo-Jin motions to the bed, for them to sit and talk.

Woo-Jin............ I'll explain.

They both sit down -- Woo-Jin at the head, Sun-Mi at the foot.

Woo-Jin............ That's why I couldn't let myself see you as a woman. Why I pushed you away from me.

Sun-Mi.............. You're not making any sense, Woo-Jin.

Woo-Jin............ The thought of you going back to Director Yoon, I couldn't face living without you beside me.

Sun-Mi.............. Don't you love ... Young-Mi?

Woo-Jin............ Yes, but loving Young-Mi is like being addicted. Either you're flying high, or crashing down.

He swigs down another gulp of the bitter hangover medicine, accompanied by another grimace.

Woo-Jin............ Breaking up was like going through the agony of a withdrawal.

....................... And there's always the possibility of a relapse tempting you to go back.

....................... But being with you, Sun-Mi ...

His grimace turns to a smile at the thought.

Woo-Jin............ It's like seeing a rainbow after a gentle rain that washes away all the toxins ...

....................... You feel fresh and renewed, filled with happiness.

He looks at her fondly.

Woo-Jin............ I'd spend all my life with you if I could. But that means you'd have to give up your true love for me.

Sun-Mi.............. Oppa ...

Woo-Jin............ The longer we were together, the guiltier I became, realizing my need for you was also hurting you.

Tears of remorse wet his eyes.

Woo-Jin............ Because of me, you might lose your chance for happiness. I couldn't forgive myself if that happened.

Sun-Mi.............. But, I don't see it like that.

Woo-Jin............ Of course, because you always put others before yourself. Yet for me it was a quandary.

....................... I hated myself for being weak. By pushing you away, I'd have to stand on my own.

He exhales a long sigh.

Woo-Jin............ But that only made things worse -- forcing you to do this -- making me feel even more shameful.

....................... Now that you know everything, what are you going to do?

She smiles at him reassuringly.

Sun-Mi.............. I can see how your feelings are confusing, whether it's need, or friendship, or love. Or a bit of each.

....................... But don't worry. I'll stay beside you until this is resolved, and you're back on your feet again.

Woo-Jin............ What about Hyung-Chul? Will he continue to wait for you?

Sun-Mi averts her eyes, so Woo-Jin can't see the anguish she feels over that possibility.

Sun-Mi.............. I think Senior may be back with Park Su-Jin again ... and ... and I ...

Tears well up in her eyes, and she struggles to rein in her emotions.

Sun-Mi.............. Oppa? What can I do? When I saw them together, I couldn't breathe ... I felt I was about to die!

Woo-Jin............ (gently) It's okay, Sun-Mi ... don't hold it back. Cry if you want to.

Giving in to her grief, Sun-Mi sobs quietly.

Woo-Jin gets up and sits next to Sun-Mi, resting his arm protectively around her shoulders.

Woo-Jin............ I wish I could say everything will be okay. But right now ... I don't know that, for either of us ...

His expression turns determined.

Woo-Jin............ But I believe one thing, for certain. We'll get through this together, somehow. I promise.

Sun-Mi stops crying and wipes her eyes with her palms, resting her head against his shoulder.

Sun-Mi.............. I don't know why, but that's exactly what I needed to hear right now.

She slips her hand under his, interlocking their fingers.

Sun-Mi.............. Thank you, again, for being the person I can trust to be in the right place, at the right time.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's villa

Hyung-Chul sits in a chair, dragging on a cigarette as he ponders the events of the evening.

FLASHBACK [Previous scenes from Episode 16]

Young-Mi.......... There's a bond between Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin so deep that even they don't understand it ...

Young-Mi.......... Waiting, hoping, praying ... in the end, it was all futile ... Their bond was unbreakable ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 16, at dawn on Seorae Island]

Sun-Mi.............. If I ... get married to Woo-Jin, what will you do?

Hyung-Chul....... Then I'll stop waiting for you.

He crushes the butt into an ashtray on the coffee table in front of him, as he muses aloud ...

Hyung-Chul....... If that actually happened, could I give her up? ... Could I wish her happiness, without me?

SCENE: Young-Mi's apartment, night

Young-Mi takes out a photograph of herself and Woo-Jin from a drawer.

A tear rolls down her cheek and falls onto the photo as she gazes at his face.

She puts down the photo on the bed.

On top of the pile of other photographs in the drawer, she sees one of herself and Sun-Mi.

Taking the photo from the frame, she tears it in half, and crumples Sun-Mi's image.

SCENE: Exterior shot of Woo-Jin's house, early morning

SCENE: Vestibule of Woo-Jin's house, early morning

Jin-Suk comes in the front door of her house.

In the foyer, she sees Sun-Mi's high heel slingbacks, parked next to Woo-Jin's loafers.

Changing to slippers, Jin-Suk goes inside.

In the living room, she finds Sun-Mi's office tote on the couch, and looks around for her, calling out ...

Jin-Suk............. Sun-Mi? I'm back ... Sun-Mi?

When there is no answer, she looks over at the closed door of Woo-Jin's room.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, early morning

Inside the bedroom, Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin are sleeping on the bed together.

Sun-Mi stirs, possibly from hearing the muffled sound of her name.

Her eyelids flutter open as she gradually regains consciousness.

When she sees Woo-Jin lying beside her, she smiles, recalling what he'd said earlier ...

Woo-Jin............ (V.O.) Being with you is like seeing a rainbow after a gentle rain ...

Sun-Mi.............. (whispering) Tsst! Sometimes you can be so hokey!

Reaching over, she tenderly brushes a lock of hair off his brow, as she quietly affirms ...

Sun-Mi.............. I promise I'll never abandon you, Oppa, as long as you need me.

She decides to get up. The mattress shifts as she rolls over to sit up, rousing Woo-Jin.

He looks at her with drowsy eyes.

Woo-Jin............ Where are you going?

Sun-Mi.............. To get a glass of water. Go back to sleep.

His eyes close again as Sun-Mi stands.

She gazes down on him for a moment, then heads toward the bedroom door.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's living room, early morning

Coming out of Woo-Jin's room, Sun-Mi is surprised to see Jin-Suk, sitting on the couch, as if waiting for her.

Immediately, she realizes that she has some explaining to do.

Sun-Mi.............. Aunty? You're back already?

Jin-Suk glowers grimly.

Jin-Suk............. I expect this kind of behavior from someone like Young-Mi, not you!

Sun-Mi.............. But, it's not like it looks!

Jin-Suk............. It looks like what I always said would happen when a man and woman were alone together!

Sun-Mi.............. Actually, nothing happened, Aunty. You have to believe me!

The older woman nods her head knowingly.

Jin-Suk............. Don't say any more. Sun-Mi ...

She pats the couch cushion next to her.

Jin-Suk............. Sit down, and let's talk.

Sun-Mi compliantly joins her.

Sun-Mi.............. What is it?

Jin-Suk............. All these years, I've loved you and treated you like you were my own daughter.

Sun-Mi.............. I know. I'm sorry if I've disappointed you, Aunty.

Jin-Suk............. Not at all. I'm very proud of you, of everything you've accomplished.

Sun-Mi.............. It was because you and Daddy believed in me, so I had the courage to try.

Jin-Suk............. Society today is different than when I was your age. Then, marrying meant ending your career.

....................... But now, having both career and family is an acceptable choice for a modern woman.

Sun-Mi nods.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes.

Jin-Suk............. And making a daughter-in-law live with and care for her husband's parents is old-fashioned, isn't it?

Sun-Mi.............. Perhaps. Still, it's important to honor parents and look after them.

Jin-Suk............. Spoken like a filial daughter. Your father is so lucky to have you. I hope he won't feel lonely.

Sun-Mi.............. Aunty, why are you talking like this?

Jin-Suk............. So you know that I won't pressure you, and you can do as you like.

....................... You've shown that you can take good care of Woo-Jin, without my constant oversight ...

She smiles warmly.

Jin-Suk............. Be assured that I'll treat you the same when you're my daughter-in-law.

Sun-Mi.............. Aunty, what are you saying?

Jin-Suk............. It's time that you and Woo-Jin got married.

Sun-Mi.............. Married? Why now?

Jin-Suk............. You've been going together as a couple for months. And what do you call this, tonight? A 'sleepover'?

Sun-Mi.............. But, Aunty, we didn't intend ...

Jin-Suk............. (interrupting sternly) If not this time, next time. Or the time after. I know how it goes.
