Woo-Jin and Young-Mi are lying together on a couch, intimately engaged.
Young-Mi.......... Woo-Jin?
She lightly pushes him away to indicate she wants to talk.
Young-Mi.......... It's getting late ... almost time for the News ...
Young-Mi.......... I have to go soon.
She reaches up to caress Woo-Jin's cheek.
Young-Mi.......... (huskily) Why don't we meet up later, at my place?
Remembering he has a previous appointment, he shakes his head.
Woo-Jin............ I can't. I promised to send Sun-Mi home after her radio program.
She smiles seductively ...
Young-Mi.......... Why not come over afterward?
Their eyes meet for a moment, exchanging an intensity of mutual desire.
Young-Mi.......... Stay the night, too, huh?
Feelings of guilt make Woo-Jin look away, shamed for even entertaining the possibility.
Woo-Jin............ No ... I shouldn't. I shouldn't be here now, with you, either. It's wrong.

She presses her index finger on his lips to Interrupt.

Hyung-Chul bursts in the open doorway of radio Studio No.1.
He sees Sun-Mi lying unconscious on the couch, with the Producer and Assistant Producer worrying over her.
Producer........... Did you call the ambulance? Where is it?
Assistant........... I don't know.
The Assistant touches Sun-Mi's forehead.
Assistant........... Sun-Mi!
Hyung-Chul hurries over and effortlessly picks up Sun-Mi from the couch.
The Producer and Assistant watch in amazement as he carries Sun-Mi off in his arms.
Assistant........... Who was that?
Producer........... I think it's Director Yoon Hyung-Chul.
Assistant........... Didn't she call someone else?
Producer........... Yes. Kim Woo-Jin. A cameraman she knows.
Assistant........... Then, how would the Director know?
Heading for the hospital, Hyung-Chul's BWM is caught in heavy traffic.
[ sounds of car horns blaring ]
SCENE: Inside Hyung-Chul's car, evening
Hyung-Chul hunches forward in the driver's seat, like a jockey urging his steed forward, in a race he can't afford to lose.
But the traffic in front of him crawls, sporadically moving forward at a snail's pace.
[ sounds of car horn blaring ]
Frustrated, he checks his watch, then worriedly glances over at Sun-Mi ...
Seeing her unconscious and pale, he recalls the first time he had rushed Sun-Mi to the hospital, fearing for her life ...

He starts to regret his rash decision to send Sun-Mi to the hospital himself ...
Hyung-Chul....... (V.O.) The ambulance would've been faster. What if we're too late? I'll never forgive myself...
Then, amid the doubts and self-recriminations, a quiet reminder pops up to encourage him ...

Joo-Hee............ This is where your Mother found the strength to keep hope alive ...
Joo-Hee............ To� the end, she never gave up hope.

Reaching for his wallet, he takes out the remembrance card that Joo-Hee gave him that day.

Then doubt returns as he grumbles to himself ...
Hyung-Chul....... That was pointless. What can God do about this traffic?
Ahead, a traffic light unexpectedly changes to yellow and then immediately to red.
Distracted by his thoughts, Hyung-Chul reacts belatedly, slamming on the brakes.
The car abruptly skids to a jolting halt.
Seconds slowly tick by as Hyung-Chul frets, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel impatiently at this latest delay.
[ sound of a siren growing louder ]
An ambulance enters the intersection, crossing in front of his car.
Turning toward him, the ambulance speeds past.
[ sound of siren diminishing ]
Several seconds later, the light changes back to green.
Hyung-Chul starts the car moving. At the intersection he turns right, in the direction the ambulance came from.
Reassuringly, he sees the hospital sign, visible in the distance.
But more important, because the ambulance had blocked the intersection, the street ahead is clear of heavy traffic.
Whether just a coincidence or not, he sends up a quick word of gratitude ...
Hyung-Chul....... Mother, thank you. And thank God for me, too.
He floors the accelerator pedal, and the BMW speeds forward with a roar of power.
[ sounds of a car engine revving ]
SCENE: MBS news studio, evening
Young-Mi takes her seat behind the News desk next to Sun-Dal.
A tech assistant runs up to help put on her wire.
Sun-Dal............ It's late. Where were you?
Young-Mi.......... Sorry. I ...
She thinks quickly of a plausible excuse ...
Young-Mi.......... I was in the washroom. My stomach's a little upset.
He turns in his seat to scrutinize her closely.

Hyung-Chul's car stops beside an ambulance parked outside the hospital's emergency entrance.
[ faint sound of an ambulance siren ]

Carrying Sun-Mi in his arms, Hyung-Chul hurries through the automatic sliding doors.
Inside, emergency room aides help him gently lay Sun-Mi onto a waiting gurney.
A doctor comes over and gives Sun-Mi an immediate assessment.
Doctor.............. Take her to Bed 4.
Hyung-Chul follows the gurney as the aides quickly roll Sun-Mi to an evaluation station ...
SCENE: MBS Radio Studio 1 control room, evening
The Producer and her Assistant are closing up the studio for the night.
Producer........... You worked hard. Have a good rest.
Assistant........... It's too bad about Sun-Mi.
The Producer shakes her head.
Producer........... She works too hard. Lately the announcers are under pressure to improve ratings.
Assistant........... I'm glad it's not me.
[ sound of footsteps approaching quickly in the corridor outside the studio ]
Woo-Jin appears in the control room doorway, breathing hard from running.
The Producer and Assistant turn to look.
Woo-Jin............ Excuse me, I'm looking for Jin Sun-Mi?
Producer........... She's not here. Who are you?
Woo-Jin............ Kim Woo-Jin. Sun-Mi left a message on my mobile, saying she felt ill.

As Hyung-Chul puts his phone back, a man wearing a white doctor's lab coat and carrying a clipboard enters.
In his mid-fifties, he has a short, medium build and an authoritative demeanor.
He walks up to Hyung-Chul and introduces himself ...
Doctor.............. I'm Doctor Kim Bo-Man. Are you Miss Jin Sun-Mi's guardian?
Hyung-Chul....... Yes. Director Yoon Hyung-Chul, her employer. Until her father arrives, I have responsibility.
The doctor glances down at his clipboard, as if confirming Hyung-Chul's claims.
Bo-Man............. You were the one who brought her in?
Hyung-Chul....... Yes. Sun-Mi fainted at the station. How is she?
The doctor appears about to answer, then reconsiders ...
Bo-Man............. Come to my office, Director Yoon. We can talk there.
They stop at a door with the nameplate, Kim Bo-Man, MD.
Bo-Man opens the door and goes to sit behind his desk, motioning for Hyung-Chul to also sit.
Following the doctor's directions, Hyung-Chul takes the side chair next to the desk as the doctor pivots to face him.
Hyung-Chul....... Doctor, have you determined the cause for Sun-Mi fainting?
Bo-Man............. Actually, she didn't faint. Miss Jin simply -- fell asleep.
Hyung-Chul....... What?
He looks at the doctor with disbelief and chagrin ... he had rushed Sun-Mi to the hospital just for that?
Bo-Man............. Miss Jin has bronchitis -- a chest cold -- and overdosed on dextromethorphan.
Hyung-Chul....... Dextromethorphan?
Bo-Man............. It's a common cough suppressant. Too much can make a person drowsy.
....................... From the capsules left in the bottle we found, she took about twice the recommended dosage.
Hyung-Chul....... Whatever was Sun-Mi thinking?

Dismissed, Hyung-Chul stands up and walks stiffly toward the door, still in shock.
He stops in the doorway, turning back.
Hyung-Chul....... Doctor, is there anything you can tell me?
Bo-Man............. As her employer, I can inform you that she will likely need a few days leave from work.
Hyung-Chul....... For staffing reasons, I need to know ...
He pauses, as if reluctant to know the answer.
Hyung-Chul....... Is there is a possibility that Sun-Mi will not return to work soon?
The doctor puts down the folder, and ponders for a moment.
Bo-Nam............ Right now, that is hard to ascertain. But if her condition turns out to be serious, yes.
Staggered by the answer, Hyung-Chul puts a hand on the doorframe to steady himself.
Hyung-Chul....... Thank you, Doctor. I'll go to her room now.
Act 3 - Part 2
Woo-Jin sits at a table in a red-tented pochang-macha, drinking soju.
He throws down a shot, brooding over his failure to help Sun-Mi when she most needed him ...

Hyung-Chul comes into the room and takes off his suit coat. Dropping it on a chair, he goes over to the bed.
Sitting down on a chair next to Sun-Mi, he gazes at her, gently stroking her hair and forehead.
Grasping Sun-Mi's hand, he holds it firmly, hoping she can sense she's not alone.
Meanwhile ... Woo-Jin is still drowning his sorrows.
[ buzzing sound of mobile phone ]
He picks up his phone and opens it.
