Act 2 - Part 1

SCENE: Young-Mi's studio, night

Young-Mi enters her apartment, followed by Woo-Jin.

He is carrying a cake box, and heads directly to the kitchenette.

She goes over to the bed, drops her bag on it, and takes off her jacket.

Young-Mi.......... While you pour the wine and cut some cake, I'll 'freshen up', okay?

He places the cake box on the kitchenette counter.

Woo-Jin............ Umm ... Sure.

Young-Mi.......... What's with you? Still thinking about that 'ghost'?

Woo-Jin............ Yeah.

Young-Mi.......... Then I have exactly what you need to take your mind off an imaginary woman.

She continues talking as she folds the jacket and places it on the bed, next to her purse.

Young-Mi.......... I think you're going to like it. I've been waiting for a special night.

She turns to face him with a seductive smile, and purrs sensuously ...

Young-Mi.......... Let's pick up where we left off in the studio ... okay?

Woo-Jin stares at her.

Woo-Jin............ Uh ... uhm ...

SCENE: Hospital corridor, night

Gwi-Sung is still waiting outside surgery.

The doors slide open, and Doctor Kim Bo-Nam walks out into the corridor.

He moves slowly, and his face is strained with fatigue.

Bo-Nam............ Mr. Jin?

Gwi-Sung raises his head. Seeing the doctor he stands.

Gwi-Sung.......... What's happening? Why is it taking so long? How's Sun-Mi?

Bo-Nam............ The surgery was successful. Dr. Tong repaired the perforation and removed the gastrinoma.

Gwi-Sung sighs with relief at the good news.

Gwi-Sung.......... Is it cancerous?

Bo-Nam............ We won't know until the biopsy results come back.

Gwi-Sung.......... When can I see my daughter?

Bo-Nam............ She's in post-op. We've moved her to the ICU for now, for observation.

Hearing this, Gwi-Sung's anxiety returns ...

Gwi-Sung.......... Intensive Care? Why?

Bo-Nam............ Mr. Jin, you may want to sit down first ...

Gwi-Sung.......... Just tell me, Doctor.

Bo-Nam............ After the surgery, there was a complication. Sun-Mi went into cardiac arrest ...

Gwi-Sung stares at the doctor, stunned.

Bo-Nam............ Fortunately, the surgical team, using CPR and defibrillation, resuscitated her.

Gwi-Sung, feeling his legs giving out, immediately sits down.

Gwi-Sung.......... Then, she'll be okay?

The doctor's expression is grave as he gives the prognosis ...

Bo-Nam............ Sun-Mi's heart stopped for seven minutes. Technically, she died on the operating table ...

He pauses before giving the bleak assessment ...

Bo-Nam............ After five minutes, brain damage is possible. She's in a coma, so we can't ascertain her condition.

Gwi-Sung.......... How could this happen? You said this was a routine surgery!

Bo-Nam............ We don't know why. The hospital will hold a formal inquest, to determine if anyone was at fault.

Gwi-Sung rises to his feet, glaring angrily ...

Gwi-Sung.......... I don't care about finding fault! All I care about is Sun-Mi!

He clenches his fists, but restrains himself, and lowers his voice, pleading ...

Gwi-Sung.......... Just bring back my daughter, Doctor ... Please, give her back to me, like she was before.

The doctor rests his hand on Gwi-Sung's shoulder in a show of empathy, his voice apologetic ...

Bo-Nam............ I'm sorry, Mr. Jin, but I can't promise anything. It's out of our hands now ...

SCENE: Young-Mi's studio, night

Noticing Woo-Jin's reluctance, Young-Mi steps closer and rests her hand on his arm.

Young-Mi.......... Oppa? Is something wrong?

Woo-Jin............ It's just that ...

He looks away.

Young-Mi.......... What? Am I being too forward? Do you want the wine first?

Woo-Jin............ It's not that. I'm just uncomfortable, being here, while Sun-Mi is in the hospital.

Young-Mi's expression hardens, as she replies icily ...

Young-Mi.......... Can you only think about Sun-Mi? ... What about me? Am I nothing to you now?

Woo-Jin............ Of course you are.

Young-Mi.......... Then why go to her. I hate her!

He looks back at her, surprised.

Woo-Jin............ What has she done to you?

Young-Mi.......... It's who she is. Someone who has everything! ... Everything I never had!

Woo-Jin............ Be reasonable, she can't help being in her situation.

Young-Mi.......... But why does everyone have to take her side?

Woo-Jin............ Everyone?

Young-Mi.......... Her father, your mother, Director Yoon, the Chairman, Manager Kim, Senior Joo-Hee ...

Angrily, She turns her back to him.

Young-Mi.......... And now you, too. Everyone backs her against me!

Woo-Jin............ Why do you insist on seeing things this way?

Young-Mi.......... Because it's true! ... She won't even give me the crumbs from her table!

Woo-Jin places his hand on her shoulder comfortingly ...

Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi ...

She shrugs his hand off.

Young-Mi.......... Don't touch me!

[ sound of mobile phone buzzing ]

Woo-Jin takes the phone from his jacket pocket. Opening it, he puts it to his ear.

Woo-Jin............ Yes? Mom? ... Calm down. Speak slowly ... What?!

He looks at Young-Mi with alarm.

Woo-Jin............ It's Sun-Mi! ... Something happened. I have to go.

Young-Mi.......... (sarcastically) Huh ... What did I tell you? For the slightest thing, you run back to Jin Sun-Mi!

Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi. Please. Sun-Mi's situation is serious, she could die.

Her eyes spark with fury.

Young-Mi.......... Go then! Leave me and go to Sun-Mi, like everyone else! ... Just -- just -- let me die alone!

SCENE: Sun-Mi's hospital room, night

Woo-Jin rushes into the hospital room, finding his mother with Gwi-Sung in the sitting area.

Woo-Jin............ Mom? ... Sun-Mi? How is she?

His mother looks up, her eyes wet with tears. She motions to the next room.

Woo-Jin looks over to where Sun-Mi is lying in the hospital bed, appearing as if she is only asleep.

Jin-Suk............. She's been like this since the operation.

Woo-Jin............ What happened?

Gwi-Sung.......... Her heart stopped. They saved her life, but she went into a coma.

Jin-Suk............. She's stable now, but her condition may be serious.

Woo-Jin............ What does that mean?

Gwi-Sung.......... Sun-Mi might have brain damage. Even if she wakes up, it's possible she won't be the same.

Woo-Jin stares silently at Sun-Mi for several seconds before he speaks ...

Woo-Jin............ Mom, go back with Mr. Jin and rest until morning. I ... I'll stay with Sun-Mi tonight.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's hospital room, night

After Jin-Suk leaves with Gwi-Sung, Woo-Jin sits down next to Sun-Mi.

Woo-Jin............ I don't know what to say. I feel like I've let you down, Sun-Mi, when you needed me the most.

Woo-Jin............ We're all waiting for you ... Mom, your father ... Come back to us, Sun-Mi.

SCENE: Jeju resort hotel, morning

The next day, at a popular resort on Jeju's south coast ...

SCENE: Jeju resort hotel indoor swimming pool, morning

Hyung-Chul enters the pool room, shucks off his shirt and drops a towel off on one of the poolside lounges.

He walks to the end of the pool, puts on cap and goggles, and dives in.

Surfacing, he begins a powerful, paced forward crawl.

After completing several laps, he decides to take a rest break.

Hyung-Chul raises himself up to lean on the edge of the pool and pushes up his goggles.

Then he sees the shapely legs of a woman, waiting at the end of the lane.

Looking up, he smiles at Su-Jin.

Hyung-Chul....... Finally you came. Where were you?

Su-Jin............... I waited by the outside pool, but when you didn't show, they told me to check in here.

Hyung-Chul....... You dressed like that for swimming?

Su-Jin............... You said to meet you at the pool. Nothing about getting wet, much less swimming!

Hyung-Chul....... Er ... what other reason is there?

She rolls her eyes at what she considers a clueless remark ...

Su-Jin............... To be 'noticed' of course!

With an irritated air, she sits down in one of the poolside lounge seats.

Su-Jin............... I'll wait while you finish.

Hyung-Chul....... It's okay, I've done enough.

He climbs out of the pool, and gets his towel to dry off.

Hyung-Chul....... Did you decide what to do while we're here?

She stands up and they start to walk off.

Su-Jin............... Yes. Sightseeing, sailing, hiking, museums -- a full agenda.

Hyung-Chul....... What do you want to do first?

Su-Jin............... Let's start by golfing.

Hyung-Chul....... I didn't know you golfed.

Her lips curve into an intriguing smile as she takes his arm.

Su-Jin............... I don't. But you can teach me ...

SCENE: Announcer's office, morning

Joo-Hee............ Yes ... I see ... thank you for telling me.

She puts down the handset, staring blankly at her desk in shock.

Kyung-Hee........ What is it, Joo-Hee?

Joo-Hee............ That was Manager Kim. After the operation yesterday, Sun-Mi went into coma.

Everyone in the office reacts with alarm ...

Ki-Jong............. Did you say ... coma?

Kyung-Hee........ Will she be all right?

Joo-Hee............ They're not sure ... It's possible that she may not recover ...

SCENE: Jeju golf course, morning

SCENE: Jeju putting green, morning

As Su-Jin watches, Hyung-Chul makes a putt, swings the golf club smoothly ...

The ball rolls straight and drops into the cup.

Su-Jin............... Nice shot!

Hyung-Chul....... Thanks. Now you try it.

He places another ball on the ground, about three meters from the hole.

She steps up, holding the putter awkwardly.

Su-Jin............... Is this how to do it?

Hyung-Chul....... Here, let me show you.

Coming up close behind her, he reaches around Su-Jin.

After adjusting her grip on the handle, he places his hands over hers to hold the club steady.

Hyung-Chul....... Like this. Now take a breath first, hold it, then swing back ... Ready?

Su-Jin............... Yes.

He moves the putter back, pauses, then swings forward to squarely strike the ball.

Releasing her hands, he takes a step back to watch as the ball rolls to the cup and drops in.

Hyung-Chul....... See? It's not so hard.

He removes the balls from the cup and places one on the ground in front of her.

Su-Jin takes her stance, starts moving the club, then stops.

She looks over at Hyung-Chul with an inviting smile.

Su-Jin............... Can you show me how to do that again?

SCENE: Sun-Dal's car, afternoon

After work, Joo-Hee is riding in the front passenger seat of Sun-Dal's car as he drives through the underground car park.

Joo-Hee............ This is a first!

She smiles.

Sun-Dal............ What do you mean?

Joo-Hee............ I'm having a lunch date with the Director of Programming.

He laughs.

Sun-Dal............ That is, 'Temporary' Director ... I needed a break from the office grind.

Joo-Hee............ It must be hard enough, even without Sun-Mi's situation.

Sun-Dal............ You think it's hard for me? Her father is beyond himself with worry.

Joo-Hee............ What about Hyung-Chul? Where is he? Have you contacted him?

Sun-Dal............ He expressly forbade it, even for an emergency.

Joo-Hee............ This isn't like him, taking a holiday away from work.

Sun-Dal............ I doubt he's just off having fun. He told me he had some serious business to focus on ...

SERIES OF SCENES: Various locations, Teddy Bear Museum, Jeju, afternoon

Hyung-Chul....... You want to look at teddy bears?

Su-Jin............... It'll be fun! ... Before we go in, can you take my picture?

Hyung-Chul....... Okay.

Su-Jin............... Here.

She takes a small camera from her bag and hands it to him, then goes ahead to pose.

Hyung-Chul....... Ready? ... 1 ... 2 ... 3 ... Smile!

Inside the museum, Hyung-Chul and Sun-Mi browse the exhibits ...

Su-Jin............... So many bears! This is so interesting!

Watching her, he responds unenthusiastically.

Hyung-Chul....... Eh ...

Discerning his attitude, she turns to face him.

Su-Jin............... You think this is boring, right?

Hyung-Chul....... Actually, yes.

Su-Jin............... That's because you're seeing with the wrong eyes.

Hyung-Chul....... Huh?

Su-Jin............... You're using your adult eyes, not your child eyes.

....................... It's all in how you see the world that makes the difference.

He smiles, humoring her.

Hyung-Chul....... Go on.

Su-Jin............... Imagine you're a child and the world is a magical place, inhabited by teddy bears instead of people.

Hyung-Chul....... (skeptically) You're sure about this?

Su-Jin............... Try it! Think back to a happy time as a child, then open your eyes.

Hyung-Chul closes his eyes, searching back through his photographic memory to a happier time ...

Playing piano with his mother, the day before his father walked out for another woman, and destroyed their lives.

When he opens his eyes again, Su-Jin is watching him intently.

Su-Jin............... Well? Did it work?

He looks around and shrugs.

Hyung-Chul....... I'm not sure.

She points to a nearby exhibit.

Su-Jin............... Look! Princess Diana's wedding ... aren't they cute?

Hyung-Chul....... Umm ... If you say so ...

She smiles, shaking her head.

Su-Jin............... I give up. You're impossible!

They continue walking along together.

Hyung-Chul....... Did you have a teddy bear when you were little?

Her expression turns nostalgic.

Su-Jin............... Yes. A pink one. I took it everywhere with me, until I wore it out. How about you?

He doesn't reply, his attention focused across the exhibit room.

Su-Jin............... Something else, then?

Hyung-Chul....... Er ... give me your camera.

Su-Jin............... Sure ...

She hands the camera to him.

Su-Jin............... Why?

Hyung-Chul....... I have an idea.

He grabs her wrist.

Hyung-Chul....... Come with me.

Moving briskly, he leads Su-Jin toward a pair of large bears dressed as a wedding couple under a trellis.

Hyung-Chul....... Cute, aren't they?

Hyung-Chul....... Let's take a picture together ...

SCENE: MBS building, morning

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning

Sun-Dal sits behind Hyung-Chul's desk, looking through some papers.

He puts down the papers and rubs his hands over his tired eyes.

[ rapping sound ]

Joo-Hee enters the office with a folded newspaper in her hand and a concerned look on her face ...

Sun-Dal............ Joo-Hee! What brings you up here so early?

She walks in and sits down in the chair beside the desk.

Joo-Hee............ You said that Hyung-Chul was away to 'focus on some serious business'?

Sun-Dal............ That's all he told me. He wouldn't even say where he was going.

Joo-Hee............ Then you haven't seen today's news?

Sun-Dal............ Seen what?

She places the tabloid on the desk.

Sun-Dal............ Jeju?! With Park Su-Jin?! ... Wait, do you think this is what he meant by 'serious'?

Joo-Hee............ I don't know. It could be a bluff.

Sun-Dal............ And if not?

Joo-Hee............ Honestly, I was trying to save him from that woman's clutches.

Sun-Dal............ Your move seems to have backfired. What will you do now?

Joo-Hee............ Do I have a choice?

Sun-Dal............ Hyung-Chul called your hand. You could raise the stakes and go 'all in', or fold.

Joo-Hee............ But what if he's not bluffing?

Sun-Dal............ Then what is the point of getting revenge?

Joo-Hee............ You're right ...

She nods slowly, resigned to the situation ...

Joo-Hee............ I'll just fold and admit I was outplayed, eh?

He smiles.

Sun-Dal............ Good. It's been hard with my best drinking buddy and my best girl at odds.

She gives him a scolding look.

Joo-Hee............ Humph ... 'Best girl?' ... Only in your imagination!

Sun-Dal............ Is it my imagination that we have a date for dinner and the theatre tonight?

Pretending offence, she blusters ...

Joo-Hee............ Well ... that could change, you know!

He picks up the desk phone handset.

Sun-Dal............ Then, should I cancel our reservations for dinner, and return the tickets?

Joo-Hee............ (smiling) You don't have to go that far. Just because I said it could, doesn't mean it will ...

SCENE: Jeju South Coast, afternoon

A catamaran yacht for hire sails off the south coast of Jeju.

[ sound of waves and wind ]

Hyung-Chul is at the helm, as Su-Jin watches on.

Hyung-Chul....... What do you like about sailing?

Su-Jin............... It's the peaceful sensation I get from the wind and the waves.

Hyung-Chul....... Did you sail a lot, then?

Su-Jin............... When I was young. Those are some of my best memories of us as a family.

SCENE: Jeju South Coast, afternoon

The boat moves slowly, keeping close to the scenic shoreline.

They sail past Jeongbang waterfall, famous as the only waterfall in Asia that falls directly into the ocean.

Su-Jin relaxes on the bridge deck's forward netting, enjoying the warmth of the sunny day.

Soon they arrive at their destination -- Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff.

Hyung-Chul takes in the sails, then motors in for a closer look at the unique volcanic columnar-jointed lava formation.

SCENE: Hospital, afternoon

SCENE: Doctor's office, afternoon

Doctor Kim Bo-Man is discussing Sun-Mi's condition with her father.

Bo-Man............. Your daughter's condition is stable now, but her heart was weakened by the cardiac arrest.

Gwi-Sung.......... What about the coma?

Bo-Man............. Every day it continues, the chances for a full recovery lessen. I'm sorry.

Gwi-Sung.......... There's really nothing you can do to wake her up?

Bo-Man............. All we can do is hope for the best, and be prepared for the worst.

The doctor's tone of voice leads Gwi-Sung to think the latter is more likely ...

Gwi-Sung.......... Please, don't hold anything back.

Bo-Man............. It's possible that Sun-Mi may live a long time even with severe brain damage.

....................... She could remain in this state for weeks, months, even years, until her heart fails again.

Gwi-Sung.......... Like that American woman in a coma, Terri Schiavo?

Bo-Man............. Yes, but that case is a rarity. It's more likely Sun-Mi's condition will deteriorate soon.

....................... You'll have to decide then, if it is in her best interest to continue indefinitely, or terminate.

Hearing this, Gwi-Sung protests ...

Gwi-Sung.......... You mean, just let her die?

Bo-Man............. Think of it instead as stopping artificial intervention and allowing nature to take its course.

Gwi-Sung.......... I know what you're saying, but I can't do that! I'm her father, I'm supposed to protect her!

The doctor nods, acknowledging his dilemma.

Bo-Man............. Still, I recommend filing a non resusitation order now. When the time comes, it will be easier.

Gwi-Sung.......... I can't lose her, too. Not like this! I'll never give up on Sun-Mi!

SCENE: Jeju South Coast, afternoon

[ sound of waves and wind ]

On the return leg of their day trip, the boat beats into a steady breeze.

In the cockpit, Su-Jin tries her hand at steering under Hyung-Chul's tutelage.

Hyung-Chul....... Stay as close to the wind as possible, and check the compass regularly to keep on course.

He reaches forward to put his hand on the steering wheel and turns it slightly.

Hyung-Chul....... If the jib starts to flutter, then turn the wheel back.

[ sound of wind fluttering the sail ]

Demonstrating, Hyung-Chul steers back in the other direction.

Hyung-Chul....... Now you try it.

He releases the wheel and lets Su-Jin steer.

[ sound of wind fluttering the sail ]

She adjusts the wheel slightly, as she had seen him do.

Su-Jin............... Like this?

Hyung-Chul....... That's good.

He steps back, adopting an official tone of voice ...

Hyung-Chul....... The helm is yours now, Seaman Park.

Su-Jin smiles impishly and puts a hand to her temple in a mock salute.

Su-Jin............... Aye, aye, Captain!

SCENE: Director Kim Eun-Ki's office, afternoon

Sun-Dal is seated with Kim Eun-Ki at the conference table in his office.

Sun-Dal............ You wanted to see me?

Eun-Ki.............. Thank you for coming up, Manager Kim.

Eun-Ki.............. Have you heard from Director Yoon, when he is returning?

Sun-Dal............ No. But he indicated it could be a week, or possibly longer.

Eun-Ki ............. I see. How do you like being the Acting Director?

Sun-Dal chuckles.

Sun-Dal............ It has it's challenges.

Eun-Ki.............. Like Announcer Jin Sun-Mi's situation?

Sun-Dal............ Yes, for one.

Eun-Ki.............. Tsk, tsk. Such a promising talent. It's a pity if she doesn't recover.

Noticing Sun-Dal's skeptical expression, he adds ...

Eun-Ki.............. I admit to misjudging her previously. But my opinion has changed ...

....................... As it also has about you, since you've taken on Director Yoon's duties.

Sun-Dal............ Oh?

Eun-Ki.............. When I become CEO, I'll need a new Director of Planning. You could be that person, that is ...

He leans back in his chair and smiles cunningly.

Eun-Ki.............. I need someone loyal to me in such an important position. Are you that man?

SCENE: Jeju South Coast, evening

Later, running before a gentle breeze, the boat sails further from shore, in more open waters ...

[ sound of waves and wind ]

From the cockpit, Hyung-Chul closely watches Su-Jin as she stands on the bow of the catamaran's starboard hull.

As the sun drops in the west, a scattering of clouds portends a colorful sunset.

Watching Su-Jin gaze over the water into the orange-tinted sky evokes the memories of another sunset.

Hyung-Chul immerses himself back, into that moment, still as vivid in his mind as if it happened yesterday ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 6, at Yuldong Lake]

Sun-Mi........ Can you retake that picture you took of me with your eyes?

................. This scenery and my expression, I'd like you to take care of it for me ...

Sun-Mi........ I'm going to forget it all, but I'd like you to remember it for a long time instead.

Returning to the present, he quietly assures himself ...

Hyung-Chul....... I'll keep my promise, Sun-Mi, so you can forget everything ... forget me, like I must forget you.

Confirming their location on the GPS, Hyung-Chul prepares to heave-to the boat, activating winches to reef the sails.

[ sounds of whirring electric motors running ]

As the main lowers and the jib furls, he tweaks the helm with a fine touch, until the bow sets 45 degrees off the wind.

The forward progress of the boat slows to a crawl.

After lashing the wheel, Hyung-Chul comes down from the cockpit.

He walks forward along the starboard rail, stopping on the forward bridge deck.

Hearing him approach, Su-Jin turns to face Hyung-Chul.

Su-Jin............... Why have we stopped?

Hyung-Chul....... I wanted to come here, to watch something before we go back to port.

Su-Jin............... You mean, something besides me?

Hyung-Chul....... You noticed?

Su-Jin............... On the one hand, it's flattering to finally have your undivided attention ...

She smiles quixotically.

Su-Jin............... But on the other, it's a bit disconcerting, almost like you're trying too hard.

....................... It gives me this odd feeling ... that perhaps, you're not seeing me at all.

When he doesn't respond, she turns back to look over the bow again ...

Su-Jin............... So, what is special here to watch? There's only the sky and the water.

Hyung-Chul....... Exactly ...

He comes closer to stand beside her, leaning on the rail.

Hyung-Chul....... Just the sky, the sea, a bottle of Chianti cooling in the cabin ... you ... and me ...

SCENE: Sun-Mi's hospital room, evening

Gwi-Sung is sitting beside Sun-Mi's bed, wearily watching her ...

Gwi-Sung.......... You were just one year old when you said your first word ... "ba-pa" ...

....................... But I wasn't there to hear it. Your mother called the construction trailer in Daegu to tell me.

....................... Working to build the Company, to make us a future, I left your mother to raise you alone.

....................... And before I knew it, you weren't a baby anymore, and Mother was gone.

He sighs deeply.

Gwi-Sung.......... Then I relied on your Auntie Jin-Suk to care for you, hold you when you cried for your mother.

....................... She read you stories, taught you to ride your first bike, and bandaged your knees when you fell.

....................... I justified it to myself: not knowing how to raise a girl, wanting to give you a better life.

....................... You had all the things money could buy -- everything except a Daddy home to tuck you in at night.

Gwi-Sung.......... I tried to be a good father, but now I see that I did it all wrong.

He wipes away the tears wetting his cheeks.

Gwi-Sung.......... Unless you wake up, Sun-Mi, I'll never have the chance to make up for my failings.

....................... Please, give me that chance. Otherwise, there will be only one thing left I can do for you ...

SCENE: Jeju South Coast, sunset

Hove-to, the boat drifts slowly on a quiet sea.

The setting sun casts a warm glow as it drops into rising mists.

Lounging on the bow of the yacht, Su-Jin and Hyung-Chul enjoy the majestic, expansive scene.

She looks at him enthusiastically.

Su-Jin............... This is so beautiful! Now I see why you wanted to come here.

Hyung-Chul....... Mmm.

Su-Jin............... You're unusually quiet. What is it?

Keeping his eyes on the horizon, he answers wistfully ...

Hyung-Chul....... Another night -- in a different place, with a different person -- watching the sun set over the water.

With a soft sigh, she turns back toward the sunset, too.

Su-Jin............... Was that someone Jin Sun-Mi?

He nods.

Hyung-Chul....... Sorry. Regardless of where I look, all I see is traces of her.

Su-Jin............... Love always leaves traces, whether good or bad. With Sun-Mi they must all be good.

He chuckles, reflecting on their off-and-on relationship ...

Hyung-Chul....... Not all, but most.

Su-Jin............... And for me? The traces must be mostly bad.

Hyung-Chul....... To be honest, at the time I didn't care enough.

She smiles sadly, looking down at the water.

Su-Jin............... Hearing that, I feel inadequate as a woman. It seems all my efforts -- good or bad -- were in vain.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't take it personally. It's not you, but me who's failed. This is harder than I'd imagined.

Su-Jin............... No need to apologize ... I can understand, if your feelings for her are as strong as mine for you.

Hyung-Chul....... Still, I shouldn't have encouraged your hopes.

Su-Jin............... My hopes are my own foolishness. You're not responsible for them.

Su-Jin leans back against his chest, resting her head on his shoulder.

Su-Jin............... You don't have to forget her. I can be satisfied with just the leftover spaces of your heart.

Hyung-Chul....... Can a person actually be happy with so little?

Su-Jin............... Love doesn't have to be all or nothing. Being content with what one has -- much or little -- is the key.

Hyung-Chul....... Perhaps I'm too idealistic. I don't know if I can compromise my ideals.

Su-Jin............... Anything is possible, if we want it enough.

She places her hand on his, entwining their fingers, as she speaks ...

Su-Jin............... All that's needed is time for love to grow. We still have some time left. Let's see what happens ...
