Act 1 - Part 1

SCENE: outside Sun-Mi's house, night

Hyung-Chul and Sun-Mi face each other in the lane outside her gate.

Neither says a word as seconds tick by.

Finally, Hyung-Chul breaks the silence, expressing his irritation at the hours of being kept waiting ...

Hyung-Chul....... Where have you been all night? I tried reaching you, but your phone was turned off!

To Sun-Mi, this is odd behavior for a man who has just broken up without telling her first.

Sun-Mi.............. Why are you here, Director Yoon?

Hyung-Chul....... You wanted to talk ... Said it was important.

Sun-Mi.............. (scoffing) Tsst ... What does it matter now? I've nothing more to say to you.

But Hyung-Chul has his own intentions in mind ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 17]

Hyung-Chul....... Art Club is an ideal fit for Sun-Mi, and a good opportunity to advance her career.

Hyung-Chul....... But she lacks the self-confidence to take on such a prominent program.

Su-Jin............... Then encourage her yourself. Tell Sun-Mi clearly that you want her to make the move.

Hyung-Chul....... But I have something to say to you ...

Reaching out, he grasps Sun-Mi by the wrist.

He starts dragging her toward the car, but she resists, protesting angrily ...

Sun-Mi.............. What are you doing?

Hyung-Chul....... Taking you to someplace we can talk, unless you want to make a scene for the neighbors here!

Sun-Mi.............. Heeding his warning, she stops resisting and reluctantly follows him.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, night

Woo-Jin is at the bathroom sink, running the water.

Thinking he is showering, Young-Mi starts searching the bedroom for the security tape.

She goes to the closet first, then over to Woo-Jin's desk and chest of drawers, looking through the drawers.

She finds some video cassette tapes and checks them one at a time.

While she is doing this, Woo-Jin comes into the room and watches her.

Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi?

Young-Mi.......... (searching for words to explain) O ... Oppa.

Woo-Jin looks at her accusingly.

Woo-Jin............ What were you looking for?

For a brief moment Young-Mi reacts guiltily, but then smiles as she thinks up an excuse.

She puts the tapes back into the drawer, then opens the drawer above it and takes out a picture.

Young-Mi.......... Here it is. Our picture ...

She holds it up for him to see.

Young-Mi.......... ... But where's the frame? We must've thrown it away.

Woo-Jin walks over and closes the drawer of the chest.

Then he bends down and opens a lower drawer and takes out the framed picture and places it on his desk.

Young-Mi.......... Those were good times.

She smiles awkwardly ...

Woo-Jin opens a different drawer in his desk and takes the security video tape out, holding it up to Young-Mi.

Woo-Jin............ It's this one ...

Young-Mi looks up but doesn't say anything.

Woo-Jin............ Hold onto it.

Young-Mi shakes her head.

Young-Mi.......... Put it somewhere no one can find it.

Woo-Jin puts the tape back into the drawer and walks away from the desk.

Young-Mi carefully notes where he put the tape.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's car, night

As Hyung-Chul drives, he glances pensively across at Sun-Mi.

She ignores him, staring straight ahead, uncommunicative.

When he stops the car for a red light, Hyung-Chul tries to placate what he thinks is the problem.

But Sun-Mi is fixated on her belief that he has broken up with her, and she was the last to know.

Hyung-Chul....... I understand if you're upset.

Sun-Mi.............. (sharply) I'm not upset!

Hyung-Chul....... Then why are you acting this way?

Sun-Mi.............. How should I act? Am I the one who created this situation?

Hyung-Chul....... Look, I'm sorry about your corner on Eve's Morning, okay?

Sun-Mi.............. Why be sorry? -- "We're a broadcasting company" -- Right?

He recognizes she is throwing his own words -- from a previous argument -- back at him.

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 10 ]

Sun-Mi........ Why don't you support your own staff? Instead you hire famous personalities. Why?

Hyung-Chul. How can we produce programs that no one watches? We're a broadcasting company ...

Hyung-Chul....... Yes, and that's why I hope you're not taking it personally.

Sun-Mi.............. (bitterly) Why should I? We don't have that kind of relationship anymore, do we, Director Yoon?!

Hyung-Chul....... Jin Sun-Mi, there you go again with "Director Yoon"! -- And you said you're not angry?

Sun-Mi.............. Don't I have a right to be, after what you did?! Making me look like an idiot?!

Hyung-Chul....... What are you talking about?!

Sun-Mi.............. (sarcastically) You're asking me?!

The light changes, and traffic starts moving again.

He takes a deep breath, and calms his voice, hoping for a reset.

Hyung-Chul....... Look, I don't want to argue with you tonight.

Sun-Mi.............. (testily) What's there to argue about? Isn't it already decided?!

Hyung-Chul looks over at her tiredly, his expresssion totally clueless.

Seeing his worn face, Sun-Mi regrets her sharp tongue, and offers an olive branch ...

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry. I'm tired. It's been a long day for me, too.

Hyung-Chul....... Let's talk about it when we get there, okay?

Sun-Mi doesn't reply, turning to look out the passenger side window.

Hyung-Chul glances at her with guarded relief. At least for now they've called a truce ...

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, night

Young-Mi walks over to the desk and picks up the framed picture Woo-Jin had just placed there.

Young-Mi.......... You claim to love me, yet act as though you don't trust me ...

She puts the picture down.

Young-Mi.......... It that because you despise me for what I've done? ... Or who I am, like your mother and Sun-Mi?

Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi ...

She turns to face him, distraught.

Young-Mi.......... You could destroy me with that tape, yet I trust you to keep it for me.

....................... Can't you see I'm not so evil, that I want to be a good person? Won't you believe me?

Woo-Jin reaches out and draws Young-Mi into his embrace.

Woo-Jin............ I'm sorry ...

Woo-Jin............ I'll stay beside you. I promise.

Young-Mi.......... Will you love me, too?

Woo-Jin............ Forever.

Woo-Jin kisses Young-Mi, first on her forehead, then her lips.

Young-Mi.......... I need to know that, right now, more than ever ...

She moves her arms up, around his neck, and they begin kissing amorously ...

SCENE: CREAM Cake House, night

Sun-Mi and Hyung-Chul take a table in CREAM Cake House and order fruit drinks.

He scrutinizes her closely, for any hint of a thaw, but Sun-Mi remains silent, avoiding eye contact.

After their drinks arrive, Hyung-Chul attempts to pick up where they left off in the car.

But Sun-Mi is still focused on her mistaken belief that he has broken up with her.

Hyung-Chul....... I don't know why things turned out like this.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, you don't have to do this. It happened ...

She looks up at him apologetically.

Sun-Mi.............. Because of me.

They both recall that morning by the River Han when she informed him of her decision to step back and help Woo-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. I made things hard for you. I told you I had to take care of another man.

....................... So I even asked you to wait for me.

She sighs regretfully.

Sun-Mi.............. I can't believe I did that.

Though Sun-Mi blames herself, Hyung-Chul doesn't for doing what she thought was right at the time.

But he does want to know if it is possible now for them to get back together again.

However, she hears his questions through a different filter, which makes them seem both irrelevant, and accusatory.

Hyung-Chul....... Is there still something you need to do?

Sun-Mi.............. (no response)

Hyung-Chul....... Do you still have feelings for him?

Sun-Mi.............. (no response)

Hyung-Chul....... Do you want to end things with me?

Sun-Mi nods the affirmative -- Why cling onto him, when the decision is already made and out of her hands?

Shocked by her unexpected response, Hyung-Chul catches his breath as his hopes die.

They both fix their eyes on the table, Hyung-Chul wondering what to say, Sun-Mi waiting for him to say it.

Sun-Mi.............. If you have nothing left to ...

She moves to get up, but he interrupts to hold her back.

Hyung-Chul....... I do ...

Taking a deep breath, he buys a few seconds to think.

Sensing that to press further may make things worse, he switches to an issue where they can find common ground.

But Sun-Mi's thoughts are still wrapped up in her feelings, and once again they talk past each other without realizing it.

Hyung-Chul....... I'd like it if you didn't reject being the Art Club Emcee, because of Eve's Morning.

Sun-Mi.............. You act like you're concerned! But you tell everyone that we've broken up behind my back ...

Pausing for a breath, she gives him one last chance to be straight with her.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior, how do you truly feel?

Hyung-Chul....... It's a great opportunity for you.

At this, Sun-Mi's ire erupts ...

Sun-Mi.............. What does it matter to you?!

Hyung-Chul stares back at Sun-Mi, bewildered as to what has set her off so vehemently.

Three long seconds of silence ensue, while she waits for his reply.

Finally, Sun-Mi decides continuing on with words is pointless. Maybe, taking action will force his hand.

Sun-Mi.............. See ya ... Good bye.

She gets up and walks away.

This time, Hyung-Chul doesn't try to stop her, deciding for now to let Sun-Mi cool off first, and to try again tomorrow.

SCENE: Outside CREAM Cake House, night

Leaving the cafe, Sun-Mi hurries down the stairs.

SCENE: Woo-Jin's bedroom, night

Young-Mi and Woo-Jin lie together in his bed.

Woo-Jin............ Let's tell Mom when she comes back in the morning.

Young-Mi.......... No, it might be a shock to her. It's better if she accepted me first. And what about Sun-Mi?

Woo-Jin............ Sun-Mi will be okay with my decision. I'll have her talk with Mom, too.

Young-Mi.......... (irritated) Can't you do anything without Sun-Mi?!

Woo-Jin............ It's not like that. I just thought if anyone can convince Mom to change her mind, it's Sun-Mi.

Young-Mi.......... I don't want Sun-Mi involved with anything in our lives! I don't like her, or trust her!

He sighs, deciding to drop the issue for now.

Woo-Jin............ Let's not argue, and get some sleep ...

SCENE: Outside CREAM Cake House, night

At the bottom of the stairs, Sun-Mi stops to catch her breath.

She looks up, hoping to hear the footsteps that signal Hyung-Chul has come running to her, like before ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 12 ]

Sun-Mi........ I thought you wouldn't come to me again.

Hyung-Chul. It's okay now. Everything's going to be all right ...

Slowly, harsh reality sinks in as her hopes fade ... He isn't coming for her.

Sun-Mi.............. (to herself) It's over ... Senior really has let me go.

SCENE:CREAM Cake House, night

After Sun-Mi walks out, Hyung-Chul remains seated at their table, with something stronger to drink ...

He rehashes over their conversation, wondering how things had so quickly gone wrong ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from this Episode ]

Hyung-Chul. Do you want to end things with me?

Sun-Mi ....... ( silently nods the affirmative )

It dawns on him that this time it felt different, that Sun-Mi may just have walked out of his life for good.

Hyung-Chul....... (to himself) Is it finally over?

He lifts the tumbler and guzzles whiskey down like water, then picks up the bottle and pours himself another.

SCENE: Gangnam street, night

Her hopes dashed, heartbroken, Sun-Mi runs off, no longer able to hold in her tears.

INTERCUT SCENES: Hyung-Chul's villa, Sun-Dal's bedroom, night

Hyung-Chul's Apartment

After returning home, Hyung-Chul's first move is to pour himself a stiff drink.

Then he calls his long-time friend and business colleague.

Sun-Dal answers sleepily ...

Sun-Dal............ (V.O. on the phone) Hello?

Hyung-Chul....... It's me.

Sun-Dal's Bedroom

Sun-Dal is lying in bed, half asleep.

Sun-Dal............ Who's "me"? Director Yoon?

Hyung-Chul....... (V.O. on the phone) See, you know me.

Sun-Dal............ What time is it? Why did you call me when you know I have a show in the morning?

Hyung-Chul's Apartment

Hyung-Chul....... Well just ...

Sun-Dal............ (V.O. on the phone) Did you see Sun-Mi? Have you two made up?

Hyung-Chul sits down.

Hyung-Chul....... I met her ... But it was just a meeting.

Sun-Dal's Bedroom

Sun-Dal............ Then you didn't tell her to stay at the morning show?

Hyung-Chul's Apartment

Hyung-Chul....... That's a good thing for her. I can't let my feelings stop her.

Sun-Dal............ (V.O. on the phone) If you didn't, then hang up.

Hyung-Chul....... Don't hang up ... Don't hang up. Comfort me for just five minutes.

Sun-Dal's Bedroom

Suddenly wide awake, Sun-Dal sits up, worried.

Sun-Dal............ Hyung-Chul?

Hyung-Chul's Apartment

Hyung-Chul smiles sadly and takes a sip from his drink.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

After returning home, Sun-Mi takes solace among familiar words in her mother's diary.

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) "Some say that a one-sided crush is still love, but you can't clap with only one hand."

....................... "Being loved by someone you love ... how I long to know this feeling."

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) "I gave my heart sincerely, and though my love was not returned, I do not regret."

....................... "I must be steadfast in hope, and trust in Love. Because without love, what meaning has life?"

She puts down the diary and sighs deeply.

SPLIT SCENE: Hyung-Chul's and Sun-Mi's bedrooms, night

Later, Sun-Mi and Hyung-Chul lie awake in their beds, unable to sleep.

It is a long night of reflection and regret over "what might've been" before dawn brings a new reality ...

SCENE: MBS building exterior, morning

Morning arrives with a crystal-clear blue sky, portending a day of bright, cheerful sunshine.

SCENE: MBS atrium balcony, morning

Inside MBS, the central atrium is empty and quiet before the day shift begins.

Arriving early for work, Sun-Mi and Cho-Jeh meet up in a corner of the atrium's balcony on 4F ...

Cho-Jeh............ (yawning) What's so important that you dragged me in early?

Sun-Mi.............. Stop complaining. I paid for coffee, didn't I?

Cho-Jeh............ Even so, it better be a big deal!

Sun-Mi.............. It is ... Director Kim asked me to emcee his new cultural program, Art Club.

Cho-Jeh............ Wow! Are you going to take it?

Sun-Mi.............. I have to give Director Kim my decision today. I'm thinking I will.

Cho-Jeh............ Then what are you asking from me?

Sun-Mi.............. Your opinion. Do you feel I'm ready for a show this big?

Cho-Jeh............ Why not?

Sun-Mi.............. So far, I failed to get good ratings on any TV program. Why should this be any different?

Cho-Jeh............ Don't be so down on yourself ... This time could be different, Sun-Mi!

....................... You've always liked museums and performances, all that arty stuff. It's a natural for you.

She makes a fist and raises it in encouragement.

Cho-Jeh............ (excitedly) Hwaiting!

A slight smile at her friend's antics cracks Sun-Mi's serious demeanor.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks. I feel more confident now, having your support.

Cho-Jeh............ But ... just a minute ...

Her brow creases as further thoughts twist through her mind.

Cho-Jeh............ But if you're going to Director Kim's program , what about Director Yoon?

....................... Aren't they rivals to be the next President of MBS?

....................... Then that must mean you've ...

She grabs Sun-Mi bythe arm before completing her thought.

Cho-Jeh............ What aren't you telling me? Did you have another big spat with Director Yoon?

Sun-Mi averts her eyes.

Sun-Mi.............. Er ... it's nothing like that ...

Cho-Jeh............ Then, what?

Sun-Mi.............. Just ... last night ... we ended it.

Cho-Jeh............ Ended what?

Sun-Mi.............. Senior ... and me.

Cho-Jeh............ (loudly) You what?! Broke up with Director Yoon?!

Sun-Mi.............. Shhhh! -- Everyone doesn't need to hear.

Cho-Jeh............ But breaking up is a Big Deal! Why didn't you tell me this first?

Sun-Mi.............. Did I say we'd broken up?

Cho-Jeh............ No, but what else would you call it?

Sun-Mi.............. Can two people break up, if they never had that relationship to begin with?

Cho-Jeh............ Whoa, where did you get that from?

Sun-Mi.............. Let me explain my thinking ...

SCENE: MBS canteen, morning

Sun-Dal and Joo-Hee are also meeting before the work day begins ...

Sun-Dal............ At one AM this morning, I got a call from Hyung-Chul.

Sun-Dal............ We talked for over an hour before I had to hang up and get some sleep!

Joo-Hee............ Why would Hyung-Chul call you at that time?

Sun-Dal............ Because he was drunk. Apparently he and Sun-Mi have split up.

Joo-Hee chuckles.

Joo-Hee............ Again?

Sun-Dal............ I know what you're thinking. But this time, he's taking it harder.

Joo-Hee............ Should I talk with Sun-Mi? Last time, it seemed to help.

Sun-Dal............ Wait and see if it blows over first. But let's keep close tabs on any developments.

Joo-Hee............ All right. I'll watch Sun-Mi.

Sun-Dal............ There's a lot riding on these next few months, with the Board vote coming up.

Joo-Hee............ My father said their program results will be a major factor in the selection evaluation.

Sun-Dal nods.

Sun-Dal............ So we have to keep Hyung-Chul focused on the business first ...

SCENE: MBS atrium balcony, morning

Meanwhile, Sun-Mi and Cho-Jeh are continuing their conversation ...

Sun-Mi.............. A lot has happened over the past few days ...

....................... First, Senior cancelled my corner from Eve's Morning, because I was hurting the ratings.

....................... After that, behind my back, he starting telling people we'd broken up.

....................... Then last night he had the gall to ask if I wanted to break up with HIM!

Cho-Jeh wrinkles her nose.

Cho-Jeh............ Eew! What a jerk! ... So what did you say?

Sun-Mi shrugs.

Sun-Mi.............. What else could I say? I thought it was my fault that things had become difficult between us.

....................... I'd been so equivocal, making him wait for me, even while I almost married Woo-Jin!

....................... But it was what he said next -- that I should go to Director Kim's program -- which got me thinking.

Cho-Jeh............ Why would he do that?

Sun-Mi.............. I asked myself the same question, especially since he felt I wasn't good enough for his program.

....................... And that's when it all became clear ...

She takes a sip of coffee.

Sun-Mi.............. While I was seeing myself as a modern-day Cinderella, to Senior I was an Eliza Doolittle.

Cho-Jeh............ Huh? Eliza who?

Sun-Mi.............. You know, from the American musical My Fair Lady with Audrey Hepburn?

Cho-Jeh............ Oh, sure. But what does that have to do with Director Yoon?

Sun-Mi.............. Like Professor Higgins did with Eliza, it was about winning, putting a feather in his cap.

....................... Senior was looking for someone he could support to become a top broadcast celebrity.

....................... Probably he chose me because I was the worst in our batch, so he could boast about the challenge.

Cho-Jeh............ You really think that's likely?

Sun-Mi.............. Looking back, why else could I pass the training class and get into MBS after failing the exams?

....................... And how else could I get such plum program assignments? Or not be fired when I should have?

....................... Even my radio program's success is due to Senior -- the concept is from the postcards he'd sent me.

Cho-Jeh............ Okay, even if your theory is right, why would things suddenly change?

Sun-Mi sips her coffee contemplatively before answering.

Sun-Mi.............. Senior had scolded me before, saying I needed to work harder to become a top celebrity.

....................... He must have been frustrated with my slow progress and repeated failures.

....................... But if he marries Park Su-Jin, he can get control of MBS -- so I became a spare tire to him.

Cho-Jeh............ Now that he had a real Princess, he didn't need Eliza any more?

Sun-Mi.............. Right. So he sends me off to Director Kim, expecting that I'd fail in the ratings there, too.

....................... That way he gets rid of me, and knocks Director Kim from the running for President, in one move.

Cho-Jeh is amazed.

Cho-Jeh............ You're claiming Director Yoon plotted your entire career, and is using you as a pawn in his schemes?

Sun-Mi.............. I know, it sounds like I'm writing a drama, but what else could explain everything that's happened?

Cho-Jeh............ Thinking like this, you still want to go on Art Club?

Sun-Mi nods.

Sun-Mi.............. Why not? What do I have to lose, even if I crash and burn in a ratings debacle?

....................... At least, I'll have tried to fight back, instead of just resigning and slipping quietly away.

....................... And if Art Club becomes a big success, it will show Senior that he was wrong about me.

....................... I'll prove that I'm good enough for him, so maybe he'll want to take me back, like before.

Cho-Jeh stares at Sun-Mi incredulously.

Cho-Jeh............ Huh? You'd still go back to that jerk after being treated like this? Are you crazy?!

Sun-Mi.............. I must be. Crazy in love, that is.

She sighs deeply.

Sun-Mi.............. I know I'm a fool to feel like this. But I can't imagine living without Senior by my side ...

SCENE: MBS corridor, late morning

Young-Mi loiters outside the executive conference room doors, waiting for the meeting inside to end.

The door opens, and as Hyung-Chul comes out, she starts walking toward him.

Noticing Young-Mi, Hyung-Chul stops to greet her.

Hyung-Chul....... Good morning, Announcer Huh.

She nods politely.

Young-Mi.......... Director Yoon.

They start walking together toward the lift lobby.

Young-Mi.......... I'm glad I ran into you.

Hyung-Chul....... Hmm?

Young-Mi.......... It's about the Gala.

Hyung-Chul....... Can we discuss it at the next meeting?

Young-Mi.......... I wanted to hear your opinion first.

One of the lift door opens, and Sun-Mi steps out.

At first she is surprised to see Hyung-Chul together with Young-Mi.

Then it dawns on her that they must have become closer while she was hospitalized, as he now is confiding in her.

The situation is awkward, but Sun-Mi has to face Hyung-Chul eventually.

She stops, dipping her head respectfully.

Sun-Mi.............. (stiffly) Director Yoon.

Taking advantage of the unexpected opportunity, Hyung-Chul hopefully extends a feeler.

Hyung-Chul....... Can we have a few minutes, in my office?

Sun-Mi.............. No ... I have another appointment.

She doesn't elaborate, reluctant to reveal more in Young-Mi's presence.

Not giving up, Hyung-Chul raises a questioning eyebrow, a tacit prompt for her to continue ...

Sun-Mi.............. With ... Director Kim.

He nods approvingly, reasoning that if she was willing to take his advice, then he may still have an opening.

Hyung-Chul....... Good. Let's talk later, then.

But she turns a cold shoulder to his invitation ...

Sun-Mi.............. What's there to talk about? Haven't we said enough already?

Her terse rejection takes him aback.

Hyung-Chul....... Umm ...

Sun-Mi.............. (curtly) I'm going first. See ya.

Not giving him a chance, Sun-Mi abruptly turns and walks away.

Watching their awkward interaction and hearing Sun-Mi's destination, Young-Mi silently gloats over her success.

Young-Mi.......... (V.O.) They really have broken up now!

After Sun-Mi is gone, Hyung-Chul checks his watch before looking over at Young-Mi.

Hyung-Chul....... It's almost noon. Have you eaten yet?

Young-Mi.......... Actually, I haven't had a break all morning.

Hyung-Chul....... Why don't we discuss this over lunch in the cafeteria?

The invitation is exactly what she was hoping for.

Young-Mi.......... Yes, I'd like that.

SCENE: Director Kim's office, late morning

Sun-Mi and Director Kim Eun-Ki are seated at his office conference table.

Eun-Ki.............. I'm glad you decided to join the program, Announcer Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. I promise to work hard, Director Kim.

He smiles and nods.

Sun-Mi.............. Good! Let's get down to business then.

He places a folder in front of Sun-Mi.

Eun-Ki.............. This is the season's program plan. It's an outline -- the details are still to be worked out.

Sun-Mi picks up the folder and starts to flip through the pages.

Eun-Ki.............. Be prepared to discuss your recommendations first thing tomorrow with the PD and writers.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes.

Eun-Ki.............. We'll have a daily meeting at eight in my office until the premiere. Any questions?

Sun-Mi.............. When will I meet the production team?

Eun-Ki.............. Shortly ...

[ Intercom buzz ]

He presses the TALK button.

Eun-Ki.............. Yes?

Secretary.......... (V.O. on the intercom) President Park is here.

Eun-Ki.............. Send her in.

He returns his attention back to Sun-Mi.

Eun-Ki.............. I hired an outside consultant, Unique Sophistique, as the style director.

Sun-Mi.............. Style director?

Eun-Ki.............. Responsible for the entire visual presentation. You'll be working closely together.

He rises from his chair, preparing to greet their visitor.

Eun-Ki.............. She'll accompany you for a tour of the new studio set, and get you oriented with the team.

The door opens, and Su-Jin enters.

Eun-Ki approaches her, hand extended.

Eun-Ki.............. Come in. You look fantastic today, as usual.

Su-Jin............... Why, thank you, Director Kim.

She loosely grasps his hand for a moment.

Meanwhile Sun-Mi stands up, looking on in disbelief at who her new work colleague is.

Eun-Ki.............. President Park Su-Jin, this is Announcer Jin Sun-Mi, our program emcee.

Stepping forward, Su-Jin greets Sun-Mi with an assured smile.

Su-Jin............... Announcer Jin, we meet again ...

Act 1 - Part 2

SCENE: MBS canteen, afternoon

After the surprise of meeting Su-Jin in Director Kim's office, Sun-Mi leads her to the canteen for a private confrontation.

While Sun-Mi waits at a table by the windows, Su-Jin stops at the vending machines.

Su-Jin............... You take tea, right?

Sun-Mi glares at her in stony silence.

Su-Jin comes over to the table, carrying two vending cups.

She places the cups on the table as she sits down opposite Sun-Mi.

Su-Jin............... What did you want to tell me?

Sun-Mi.............. When I agreed to emcee Art Club, I didn't sign onto this!

Su-Jin............... Are you implying we can't work together?

Sun-Mi.............. Work together?! I can't even stomach having a cup of tea with you!

Su-Jin............... Surely as professionals, we can move beyond our personal issues?

She extends her hand across the table.

But Sun-Mi refuses the conciliatory offer.

Sun-Mi.............. I believe I've made my position clear!

Su-Jin............... Then you're going to back out?

Sparks fly in Sun-Mi's eyes as her voice rises heatedly ...

Sun-Mi.............. Why should I be the one to resign? Why not you?!

Su-Jin smiles at that assertion.

Su-Jin............... Do you have the skills to design this program yourself?

Sun-Mi.............. We can bring someone else in. No one is irreplaceable.

Su-Jin............... Really? My contract reserves all IP rights. You'll have to recreate the entire concept.

....................... Even if you found the talent, there isn't time before the season premiere.

Sun-Mi remains adamant.

Sun-Mi.............. We'll do the best we can in the time available!

But Su-Jin presses her point.

Su-Jin............... Directors Yoon and Kim have declared a ratings war between Art Club and Eve's Morning.

....................... With your lack of skills, you might as well quit now. You can't hold a candle to Huh Young-Mi!

Her criticism cuts, reminding Sun-Mi of another competition she faced with Young-Mi ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 15 ]

Young-Mi.... Let's not play games. We'll bet our lives on it! You definitely lack the abilities.

................. Whether Yoon Hyung-Chul and Kim Woo-Jin, you lose. You can't hold a candle to me ...

Glowering at Su-Jin, she spits back ...

Sun-Mi.............. I'll take my chances! I'd rather lose, than win with YOUR help!

Having had enough, Sun-Mi stands to leave.

Sun-Mi.............. You have until Monday to resign. Otherwise I'll insist that Director Kim fire you!

Su-Jin's jaw tightens at the threat, but she holds her tongue.

Sun-Mi.............. I'll handle things from here on my own, so don't show your face again!

Done saying her piece, Sun-Mi turns away and marches off.

Watching Sun-Mi's back, Su-Jin ponders this latest twist.

Su-Jin............... Demand what you will, Jin Sun-Mi, but this isn't over ...

Su-Jin............... Things are just starting to get interesting.

SCENE: MBS Announcer 1Team office, evening

It is dark outside the office windows as Joo-Hee wraps up a long day's tasks.

Except for Sun-Mi, the rest of the staff have gone.

Joo-Hee turns off her computer and closes the screen, then picks up her office tote as she stands up.

Approaching Sun-Mi's desk, she stops to talk.

Focused on her work, Sun-Mi doesn't look up or otherwise acknowledge her supervisor.

Joo-Hee clears her throat to get Sun-Mi's attention before she speaks ...

Joo-Hee............ You've been working hard. It's a Saturday night, don't you have any other plans?

Sun-Mi stops typing and looks up at Joo-Hee.

Sun-Mi.............. Huh?

Joo-Hee smiles invitingly.

Joo-Hee............ Let me buy you a drink.

Instead of dutifully accepting the invitation, Sun-Mi turns back to her computer.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm sorry, Senior, but I have a lot to do right now.

Without waiting for Joo-Hee's response, she resumes typing.

Ignoring the snub, Joo-Hee persists ...

Joo-Hee............ Is it for Director Kim's new program? I heard that you're the MC.

Expecting criticism, Sun-Mi turns defensive and brusquely snaps back ...

Sun-Mi.............. Yes? ... What about it?!

Before her Junior can dig herself into a deeper hole, Joo-Hee pulls rank.

Slamming her tote down on the desk, she sternly demands proper deference ...

Joo-Hee............ Jin Sun-Mi!

Called out, Sun-Mi stops typing and stands meekly.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, Senior?

But instead of a scolding, Joo-Hee raises a question ...

Joo-Hee............ Did you do this because of a problem between you and Hyung-Chul?

Sun-Mi turns averts her eyes toward the windows, debating with herself over how much to disclose.

Reticence wins out, and she uneasily skirts the question ...

Sun-Mi.............. Er ... why would you suppose that?

Softening her authoritative stance, Joo-Hee makes another attempt.

Joo-Hee............ Rumors are spreading recently. I'm concerned and thought you might have something to say.

Again Sun-Mi refuses to open up.

Sun-Mi.............. Didn't you teach us to ignore rumors, and consider only facts?

Unable to persuade Sun-Mi, Joo-Hee leaves with a word of caution and clemency ...

Joo-Hee............ Just be sure that you're considering only facts, too, before you do anything rash.

....................... You must be tired after a long day. Don't stay too late.

Sun-Mi dips her head respectfully, grateful for the absolution.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, Senior.

Joo-Hee picks up her bag, and walks out the door.

Alone, Sun-Mi wonders aloud to herself ...

Sun-Mi.............. How much does she know?

SCENE: Executive's club, evening

Eun-Ki and Su-Jin meet at his club for an after-work drink ...

Eun-Ki.............. Announcer Jin Sun-Mi seemed unhappy to see you. How is it coming along?

Su-Jin............... Actually, she wants me off the program.

Eun-Ki.............. Why, is there a problem?

Su-Jin............... To be frank, we have a history she refuses to put aside.

Eun-Ki.............. Don't worry, I'll set her straight on that point. Anything else?

Su-Jin is unsparing in her straightforward assessment.

Su-Jin............... Is Jin Sun-Mi really the best MBS has for this slot? Why her, and not anyone else?

Eun-Ki is just as direct in his response.

Eun-Ki.............. Because I want to win, and I'm convinced Announcer Jin is the one who can do it.

Unconvinced, Su-Jin argues her case.

Su-Jin............... But I've reviewed her tapes, and in my opinion, she's lacking considerably.

....................... Her delivery is uneven, and the image she presents is, well, hard to take seriously.

Eun-Ki.............. I know -- As an announcer, Jin Sun-Mi has a poor record with any of her programs.

....................... But I regard that as a matter of miscasting by Director Yoon and his toady Kim Sun-Dal.

Su-Jin............... What do you mean?

Eun-Ki.............. Every rookie Announcer dreams she will be queen of the newsroom, anchoring the News At Nine.

....................... For personal reasons, they indulged Jin Sun-Mi with her dreams, instead of grounding her in reality.

....................... We almost lost a budding talent in the process, a mistake I'm hoping to rectify directly myself.

Su-Jin............... By that, you mean Art Club?

Eun-Ki.............. Exactly. In the right slot, I believe Jin Sun-Mi will show herself as one of MBS' best announcers.

....................... She just needs the proper guidance and environment to develop her latent talents.

....................... That's why I hired the best, to create the perfect vehicle to make this happen.

Contrarily, Su-Jin tries to temper his enthusiasm.

Su-Jin............... Respectfully, I don't have a magic wand to make Cinderella into a Princess overnight!

Eun-Ki.............. Understood ... Just focus on what you were hired to do, and leave the rest to her.

....................... If Jin Sun-Mi has the stuff inside that I believe she has, she'll only need some refinements.

Su-Jin............... Okay. I'll adjust the concept, and bring in a personal trainer for Sun-Mi.

He nods thoughtfully.

Eun-Ki.............. Bill MBS for the changes, but no trainer. I'd like you to personally see to that.

Su-Jin............... But I already told you, she won't ...

He raises his hand to still her protest.

Eun-Ki.............. I'll ensure Announcer Jin's cooperation.

....................... You make sure everything, including Jin Sun-Mi, is ready for the premier.

His eyes narrow in determination.

Eun-Ki.............. I want to crush Eve's Morning right out of the gate!

Su-Jin............... Isn't that expecting too much? It takes time to build up an audience.

Eun-Ki.............. That's why I'm dumping a fortune in PR and marketing to build up a buzz, and also ...

He raises his glass.

Eun-Ki.............. Doubling your bonus if it happens.

Su-Jin lifts hers to his and they salute ...

Eun-Ki.............. To a successful premiere!

Su-Jin............... I'll start working on a new image for Jin Sun-Mi, immediately.

Eun-Ki nods approval.

Eun-Ki.............. Excellent! That's the attitude I want to see.

He drains his glass with a long swig.

Eun-Ki.............. Now that we've dispensed with business, let's relax a bit. Another round? Dinner?

Su-Jin sets aside her barely touched drink.

Su-Jin............... I'd love to, Eun-Ki, but it was a long day and I'm really tired. Another time?

He chuckles at the transparent brushoff.

Eun-Ki.............. You don't have to humor me, Su-Jin. Just say 'No' if you don't want to.

She smiles back flirtatiously.

Su-Jin............... I'd rather say 'Yes', but really do have to rest.

Standing to leave, Su-Jin offers a consolation ...

Su-Jin............... Will you walk me to my car?

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Gwi-Sung enters Sun-Mi's room, carrying a plate of cut fruits.

[ clatter of typing on a keyboard ]

Sun-Mi is at her desk, focused on her laptop screen.

Gwi-Sung.......... Here's some tasty refreshments!

She smiles as she pivots her chair to look.

Sun-Mi.............. Thanks, Daddy.

Gwi-Sung.......... You came home late, and you're still working?

Sun-Mi.............. It's for a new program, and there's a lot that isn't ready.

Gwi-Sung.......... Don't you have someone to help?

Sun-Mi smiles ruefully, thinking of her confrontation with Su-Jin that afternoon.

Sun-Mi.............. That's another story, but ...

She sighs deeply, her expression troubled.

Sun-Mi.............. The problem is that I'm not very good at it. So I have to work harder to do well.

Hearing her say this, he frowns.

Gwi-Sung.......... But you were just seriously ill in the hospital!

Sun-Mi.............. Not everyone sees it that way. I'm still expected to carry my own weight.

Gwi-Sung.......... Why not ask Director Yoon to give you some relief? He'll understand.

At the suggestion, Sun-Mi's eyes spark in protest ...

Sun-Mi.............. Daddy! I can't ask Senior for favoritism!

Gwi-Sung.......... Hmmm ...

He nods, seeing her point.

Gwi-Sung.......... But now that I'm thinking about it, you should invite Director Yoon here sometime for dinner.

Sun-Mi.............. Er ... Uh ... Whatever for?

Gwi-Sung.......... Because of that night he brought you to the hospital.

Sun-Mi.............. I already thanked him for sending me.

Gwi-Sung.......... But at the hospital, he ...

Intent on quickly changing the topic, Sun-Mi creates a diversion ...

Sun-Mi.............. Oh my! Look at the time! ...

She pointedly makes a show of checking her wristwatch.

Sun-Mi.............. I'd like to chat more, Daddy, but I have a lot to do yet tonight.

He wonders at her odd behavior, but says nothing about it.

Gwi-Sung.......... I'll go down then.

Sun-Mi.............. See you for breakfast? You cook, and I'll do the dishes.

Gwi-Sung.......... Okay ... But at least take a break and rest.

Sun-Mi.............. Don't worry about me, Daddy. Go to bed ...

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's club, evening

As Su-Jin enters the club, she is greeted at the door with a formal bow.

Waiter.............. Welcome.

Su-Jin............... Has Director Yoon Hyung-Chul arrived?

Waiter.............. Yes. He's expecting you ... Follow me.

He leads her to Hyung-Chul's table.

Hyung-Chul looks up as Su-Jin seats herself in the adjacent chair.

A cigarette dangles between his lips, and a half-empty glass sits in front of him.

Su-Jin dismisses the lingering waiter with a nod.

Hyung-Chul takes a last drag and stubs out the cigarette.

Hyung-Chul....... Bourbon?

Su-Jin............... Thanks.

Hyung-Chul....... You're late.

Su-Jin............... I hope you haven't waited long. Director Kim called me out for a 'social drink'.

As he fills her glass, Hyung-Chul lifts a questioning eyebrow.

Hyung-Chul....... When did Kim start being social with his staff?

She shrugs nonchalantly.

Su-Jin............... When has he had such an attractive woman on his staff?

Hyung-Chul....... Tsst ...

Dismissing her arrogance, he shifts to the purpose of their meeting.

Hyung-Chul....... What did you have to tell me?

Su-Jin............... I met with Sun-Mi today. For Art Club.

Hyung-Chul....... Oh? How did it go?

Su-Jin............... Not as well as expected. Is she always this troublesome?

Hyung-Chul....... Something happened?

Su-Jin............... Let's just say, we had a 'difference of opinions'.

He nods, having had a few of those himself.

Hyung-Chul....... Give Sun-Mi time. She'll come around eventually.

Su-Jin............... I hope so. Director Kim is expecting Art Club to beat Eve's Morning at the premiere.

Hyung-Chul....... That's unusually confident, even for him. Is he expecting me to ease up, for Sun-Mi's sake?

Su-Jin creases her brow thoughtfully.

Su-Jin .............. Maybe I've misread his intentions. He seems sincere that Sun-Mi has the talent to succeed.

....................... And he's preparing for an all-out contest against Eve's Morning.

Hyung-Chul....... That doesn't worry me ...

He upends his glass, draining it with a long swallow.

Hyung-Chul....... It's that Sun-Mi is avoiding me again ...

Taking the decanter, he pours a refill.

Hyung-Chul....... I never thought I'd say this, but I'm beginning to lose hope things will ever change.

Su-Jin gazes into her drink as she replies with a twinge in her voice ...

Su-Jin............... Despairing over love? I'm sorry, but I can't help you there anymore.

Hyung-Chul....... I know.

She idly swirls the amber liquid, then sets the glass down.

Su-Jin............... But I can offer some encouragement.

Standing up, she invites him to join her.

Su-Jin............... Let's play together. It will ease your mind better than another drink.

Hyung-Chul....... You're right ...

They go to the piano and sit on the bench together.

Su-Jin puts her hands on the keys, but waits.

Su-Jin............... You choose.

Hyung-Chul starts playing a familiar melody ...

[ piano arrangement of Brian Crain's Northern Lights, the bumper music from Sun-Mi's radio show ]

After a few notes, Su-Jin joins in, but shoots a quizzical glance to Hyung-Chul.

He smiles.

Hyung-Chul....... When I hear this tune, somehow I feel closer to Sun-Mi ...

INTERCUT SCENES: Sun-Mi's bedroom / Sun-Mi's gate, night

[ piano arrangement of Brian Crain's Northern Lights, continues throughout ]

Sun-Mi's bedroom

[ muted clatter of keyboard typing]

Just out of the shower, Sun-Mi is back at her desk, working on her laptop.

Sun-Mi's gate

A dark blue BMW sedan drives up and stops near the gate to Sun-Mi's house and parks.

From the driver's seat, Hyung-Chul looks up at the lighted window of Sun-Mi's bedroom.

Sun-Mi's bedroom

[ muted clatter of keyboard typing]

Sun-Mi stops typing and sips from a coffee mug.

After setting it down on the desk next to her computer, she yawns widely, covering her mouth with her hand.

Pushing her chair back, she stands and -- raising her arms up over her head -- stretches to energize her fatigued body.

For a moment, Sun-Mi gazes longingly over at her comfortable bed.

Instead she returns to her desk and resumes working.

Sun-Mi's gate

The sky is graying with predawn light as Hyung-Chul smokes a cigarette, passing the time in his solitary vigil.

He stubs out the butt and stifles a yawn as he gets back into the car.

Shortly, he notices Sun-Mi's bedroom light go out ...

Hyung-Chul smiles to himself, content for now to give his support from a distance.

Hyung-Chul....... You've worked hard tonight, Sun-Mi ... Now sleep well ... Sweet dreams ...

Closing his eyes, he envisions the words flying up to her room and hovering protectively over Sun-Mi as she sleeps.

Sun-Mi's bedroom

Dozing in bed, Sun-Mi suddenly opens her eyes.

She rolls over, turning to look, first around the room, then toward the window.

Seeing and hearing nothing out of the ordinary, she pulls the bedcovers up tighter over her.

Then, as she drifts back to sleep, Sun-Mi lingers over a fond memory, a smile resting on her lips.

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 8 ]

Sun-Mi........ An English style goodbye!

With a wistful smile, he starts the engine, puts the car into gear, and slowly drives away.

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 17]

Young-Mi.... You broke up with him? ... Is that true?

Sun-Mi........ Director Yoon said that?

Young-Mi.... So you have broken up.

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from this Episode ]

Hyung-Chul....... Do you have a minute, to come to my office?

Sun-Mi.............. No -- I have an appointment ... with Director Kim.

Hyung-Chul....... Let's talk later, then.

Sun-Mi.............. What's there to talk about? Haven't we said enough already? ... Goodbye, Director Yoon!

[ shower water shuts off ]

Young-Mi grabs a towel and dries her hair, as a new scheme begins to form in her mind ...

Young-Mi.......... I need to make a move -- today -- before Sun-Mi tries to patch things up again ...

SCENE: Exterior of Sun-Mi's home, morning

SCENE: Sun-Mi's home, morning

Sun-Mi and her father are eating breakfast together.

Gwi-Sung.......... Why are you so surprised that I told you to bring Director Yoon home once?

Sun-Mi looks at him questioningly.

Sun-Mi.............. What do you mean? What happened while I was in the hospital?

Gwi-Sung.......... While you were sick, Director Yoon watched you all night.

....................... I couldn't come because I had work. He swore to me that he'd take good care of you.

....................... But of all daughters, why mine? And what would he protect you from?

....................... We should invite him over once on a day off like this ...

Dumbfounded, Sun-Mi is dismayed as a sinking feeling settles in her heart.

Her father notices her expression.

Gwi-Sung.......... You really didn't know?

Sun-Mi.............. (silence)

Gwi-Sung.......... So you didn't even say thank you?

Sun-Mi.............. (silence)

Gwi-Sung.......... That's no good.

Aware that she has likely misjudged Hyung-Chul's intentions, Sun-Mi ponders what she can do to fix her mistake ...

SCENE: Young-Mi's apartment, morning

While Young-Mi puts on her makeup, she devises her plans for the day ...

Young-Mi.......... (V.O.) It's a topic for the next broadcast. I wanted to show you first ...

Young-Mi.......... (V.O.) Thank you for the lunch. I'm glad that we can meet and talk as friends now ...

Young-Mi.......... (V.O.) Since we share similar struggles, let's support and comfort each other ...

SCENE: Sun-Mi's home, morning

Meanwhile, Sun-Mi and her father continue their breakfast chat ...

Gwi-Sung.......... Do you have any other questions?

Sun-Mi.............. Was Senior also with me while I was in the coma?

Gwi-Sung.......... He'd left on a business trip before the operation, and didn't know what happened.

....................... He only flew back on the night you woke up, after he'd heard how serious your condition was.

Sun-Mi.............. So he WAS with me that night? But I don't remember seeing him.

Gwi-Sung.......... We came up in the lift together. When I told him you just awoke, he decided not to impose and left.

Sun-Mi.............. You're sure Senior wasn't there while I was still unconscious?

Gwi-Sung.......... Right. Why?

Sun-Mi.............. I vaguely remember thinking he had something important to tell me, so I had to wake up.

Gwi-Sung.......... It must've been your imagination then. Woo-Jin said you were pretty woozy at first.

For a few moments, Sun-Mi contemplates the disjointed, hazy memories of coming back to consciousness.

Abruptly her eyes widen as she is struck by a startling, incredible possibility ...

Sun-Mi.............. It can't be ... can it?!

Her sudden excitement intrigues her father's curiosity.

Gwi-Sung.......... Can't be what?

But Sun-Mi's mind is already taking flight.

Sun-Mi.............. I'll tell you later, Daddy. I'm going upstairs to change.

Gwi-Sung.......... Now?

He looks over at the mess in the kitchen.

Gwi-Sung.......... But the dishes ...

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry, but you'll have to do them yourself. I have to go out and see Senior, right away.

He grins.

Gwi-Sung.......... You have a date today with the Director? Why didn't you say so before?

Sun-Mi.............. Umm ... It's not exactly a date ...

SCENE: Young-Mi's apartment, morning

Young-M does a final check of her face in the mirror on her desk. Satisfied, she grabs her purse to go.

At the door, she reaches for the handle, then glances down at her shoes, reconsidering ...

Young-Mi.......... Hmmm ... Too workaday.

Turning to the wardrobe closet, Young-Mi steps out of her heels and opens the doors to peruse her shoe shelves.

She selects a pair, places them on the floor, and slips her feet into the stylish stilettos.

Looking in the entry wall mirror, Young-Mi appraises the change approvingly.

Young-Mi.......... That's much better ... for a date.

SCENE: Inside a taxi, morning

Riding in the back seat of a taxi, Sun-Mi frets, kneading her hands impatiently.

Berating herself, she grumbles under her breath ...

Sun-Mi.............. So blur ... Why didn't I see it clearly before? ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 8 ]

Sun-Mi........ I knew there was a reason why I wanted to come outside ... Did you call me?

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 8 ]

Hyung-Chul. At some place like this, I sent a telepathic message, asking someone to come out, but it didn't work.

Sun-Mi........ That's because they say telepathy only works if two people have true love for each other ...

Sun-Mi.............. I talk about True Love, yet don't recognize when it's right in front of me!

She stares out the cab window, agonizing.

Sun-Mi.............. What if it's too late? ... I'm such an idiot!

She leans forward to speak to the driver ...

Sun-Mi.............. Sir, can you go faster?

He glances up into the rearview mirror.

Driver............... I'm already at the limit, Miss.

Sun-Mi.............. Please? It's something that if I don't do it right now, I may not be able to!

The road-weary driver frowns skeptically, scoffing at the young, well-dressed woman's plight...

Driver............... What could be that important for a pretty lady on a sunny Sunday morning?

Sun-Mi pleads again, hoping her heart felt appeal will move the cynical cabbie.

Sun-Mi.............. Sir, I made a big mistake, that I now regret. It's about love ... True Love!

Something in her voice catches his attention.

Driver............... Just a minute ...

He scrutinizes Sun-Mi in the rearview mirror, then his eyes brighten with recognition.

Driver............... You're Jin Sun-Mi, from Musical Postcards, right? The one they call the 'Goddess of Love'?

Embarrassed, Sun-Mi lowers her eyes modestly.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. That's me.

Driver............... I thought you sounded familiar! When I tell the other drivers, they won't believe my good luck!

Sun-Mi.............. Huh?

Cracking a smile, he explains ...

Driver............... A lot of us started listening regularly to your show after our fares began requesting it.

His brow wrinkles thoughtfully as he continues ...

Driver............... So this is about True Love, eh? Now, that IS something important!

....................... Why didn't you say that from the beginning?

Returning his attention to the street, he floors the accelerator.

[ engine revving up ]

Deftly steering the taxi, working the horn with one hand, the driver swerves around the cars blocking his way.

[ loud blares of a car horn ]

The taxi speeds off, zipping past the other cars ...

SCENE: Young-Mi's car, morning

As Young-Mi drives, she mulls over the failure of her schemes to entice Hyung-Chul ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 10 ]

Young-Mi.... There's something in my eye. Could you blow on it, please?

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 12 ]

Young-Mi.... I just stopped by to say thank you, for visiting me in the hospital ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 12 ]

Young-Mi.... Thanks for finding my mobile ... are you going to the ballgame?

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 15 ]

Young-Mi.... I'd ask you to dance, but you'd probably refuse me, right?

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 16 ]

Young-Mi.......... This dress is all I had to change into ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scenes from Episode 16 ]

Young-Mi.......... Jin Sun-Mi, what's this?! ... You and Woo-Jin are going to marry?

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 16 ]

Young-Mi.......... There are so many dresses to choose from. I definitely need your help ...

With a long sigh, she sums up her fruitless efforts.

Young-Mi.......... Regardless of what I try, nothing seems to work ...

FLASHBACK [Previous scene from Episode 12 ]

Young-Mi.... You keep pushing me away. What am I lacking compared to Sun-Mi?

Young-Mi.......... If I don't succeed today, I may never have another chance.

Desperate, she prays ...

Young-Mi.......... Dear God, please ... This once, I'm asking for your help.

....................... Please -- do this for me, and I'll be a better person from now on -- I promise!

Act 1 - Part 3

SCENE: Seoul street, morning

INTERCUT SCENES: Sun-Mi's taxi / Hyung-Chul's villa, morning

Sun-Mi's Taxi

Looking out at the traffic jam, Sun-Mi worries ...

Sun-Mi.............. Sir, how much longer?

Driver............... Sorry, Miss. It's hard to say. There's an accident up ahead.

Sun-Mi takes her mobile from her purse.

Holding it, she deliberates quietly ...

Sun-Mi.............. What if I call, and he won't pick up? But if I don't and he leaves first, I won't have a chance, either ...

The driver looks back at her in the rearview mirror.

Driver............... Miss Jin, did you say something?

Sun-Mi.............. Sir, I don't know what I should do.

Driver............... Can I give you some advice I heard recently?

Sun-Mi.............. Why not? ... (ironically) Even the "Goddess of Love" can use some good advice now and then.

Driver............... I quote -- "Sometimes we let fear cloud our mind. But if it's True Love you don't need to be afraid."

He grins, eyes twinkling.

Driver............... Pretty good, eh? I heard it from the expert ...

Sun-Mi smiles thoughtfully.

Sun-Mi.............. Actually, the expert was my mother. Thank you for reminding me.

She flips open her phone, and taps in the number ...

Hyung-Chul's villa

Hyung-Chul is at the kitchen sink, washing dishes.

[ phone starts ringing ]

He looks over his shoulder at the phone.

Sun-Mi's Taxi

[ phone ringing ]

Waiting for Hyung-Chul to answer, Sun-Mi mentally prepares herself ...

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) When he answers, what should I say first? ... Where do we begin again?

[ phone ringing ]

Hyung-Chul's villa

[ phone ringing ]

After drying his hands, Hyung-Chul comes over to answer the phone.

But before he picks up, another sound catches his attention ...

[ doorbell chimes ]

He stops and looks toward the door, then back at the phone.

[ phone ringing ]

[ doorbell chimes ]

Sun-Mi's Taxi

Hyung-Chul....... (V.O. on the phone) This is Yoon Hyung-Chul. Please leave me a message.

Sun-Mi cuts off the call and closes her phone.

With a sigh, she gazes out at the stalled traffic.

Driver............... Changed your mind, Miss?

Sun-Mi notices the driver watching her in the mirror, and smiles self-consciously.

Sun-Mi.............. Er ... Some things are better said face to face.

He nods.

Driver............... The traffic ahead is starting to clear. We'll be moving soon.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's villa, morning

Hyung-Chul opens his door to find Young-Mi standing outside.

Surprised, he waits for an explanation.

Young-Mi.......... It's a day off, but I was worried you'd have gone to work ...

SCENE: City street, morning

Sun-Mi's taxi speeds down the street ...

Driver............... (V.O.) We should get there in about twenty minutes ...

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's living room, morning

Young-Mi puts a packet on the coffee table for Hyung-Chul.

Young-Mi.......... It's a topic for the next broadcast.

....................... The reason I'm seeing you and showing you first, is because I thought people would laugh.

....................... I don't want to be embarrassed if it's not good enough.

Hyung-Chul looks through the papers.

Hyung-Chul....... Aren't you embarrassed in front of me?

Young-Mi.......... Not any more. I've done many embarrassing things in your presence ...

She smiles.

Young-Mi.......... You can get used to that too.

Hyung-Chul....... You seem to be interested in family-related news.

She smiles again.

Young-Mi.......... I guess I am. I'm different from people who have decent families.

Hyung-Chul looks up at Young-Mi.

Hyung-Chul....... I'm sorry.

Young-Mi.......... It's all right. Thank you for your time.

Hyung-Chul....... Not at all. It's a good topic. It'll make a good story.

Hyung-Chul stands.

Hyung-Chul....... You're here already so let's eat lunch.

Young-Mi.......... Mr. Director? I heard from Sun-Mi ... that you broke up ...

Her question catches Hyung-Chul by surprise -- that Sun-Mi would spread the news so quickly.

In his silence, she ventures another question ...

Young-Mi.......... Is that true?

Hyung-Chul looks away.

Hyung-Chul....... Do I have to answer you?

Young-Mi stands.

Young-Mi.......... No. You don't. But forgive me for being curious. Of course I would be.

Wanting to avoid further discussion on the unpleasant topic, he moves on ...

Hyung-Chul....... What should we have for lunch?

SCENE: Outside Hyung-Chul's villa, morning

Sun-Mi's taxi pulls up and stops at the entrance to Hyung-Chul's villa complex.

She alghts from the cab and slings her purse strap over her shoulder, ready to walk into the car park.

But as the taxi drives off, she sees Hyung-Chul and Young-Mi leaving his building together.

Wanting to avoid a scene with Young-Mi, Sun-Mi turns and quickly walks away, before she is noticed.

SCENE: Restaurant, midday

Young-Mi is talking on her mobile ...

Young-Mi.......... Woo-Jin? ... Sorry, but we can't have lunch today ... Something came up, for work.

Woo-Jin............ (V.O. on the phone) On your weekend off?

Young-Mi.......... Announcers never have weekends off, at least not the ones who are successful.

Woo-Jin............ (sarcastically) You can't even get an hour free?

Young-Mi.......... You know how it is! Don't ask me to choose!

SCENE: Woo-Jin's car, midday

Woo-Jin's car is stopped at the street curb.

He is in the driver's seat, mobile to his ear ...

Woo-Jin............ Sorry. We just haven't had a real date together for a long time.

Young-Mi.......... (V.O. on the phone) It's just this once.

Woo-Jin............ What about later?

Young-Mi.......... I don't know when I'll finish. I don't want to keep you waiting.

Woo-Jin............ That's not a problem.

Young-Mi.......... (irritated) Look, I'll make it up to you another time, Oppa, okay?

He starts to suspect something is afoot ...

Woo-Jin............ Sure ... Well then ...

Young-Mi.......... I really gotta go now. Bye.

Woo-Jin is about to close his phone, when it rings.

[ mobile phone ringtone ]

Glancing at the screen first, he puts it up to his ear again.

Woo-Jin............ Hello ... Sun-Mi?

SCENE: Park, midday

Sun-Mi.............. I'm sorry it's such short notice, but are you free to meet up?

Woo-Jin............ (V.O. on the phone) Right now?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. It's important.

Woo-Jin............ Sure. Where?

Sun-Mi.............. That park, where we used to go.

Woo-Jin............ Okay, I'll see you there.

Sun-Mi.............. No rush. It's a nice day. I'll wait ...

SCENE: Riverside restaurant, midday

Hyung-Chul and Young-Mi are having coffee after lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Han River.

Hyung-Chul....... It was a good choice to come here.

Young-Mi.......... I told you the food, and the view, were great. Thank you for paying.

Hyung-Chul....... Since we met for work, it's on the Company, not me.

Young-Mi.......... Anyway, it was a real treat for us to eat as friends. I feel like we've crossed a big hurdle.

Hyung-Chul....... I suppose it just took some time to gain a sense of familiarity.

Young-Mi.......... You're not an easy person to know.

Hyung-Chul....... I can say the same about you.

She smiles.

Young-Mi.......... See! I told you we have more in common than was first apparent.

He laughs.

Hyung-Chul....... So you did.

Young-Mi.......... Trusting relationships are essential if our team is to win the fight against Art Club.

Hyung-Chul....... Isn't that taking things too extreme? It's competition, not war.

Young-Mi.......... You're not concerned about Director Kim taking control of MBS?

Hyung-Chul....... Frankly, there's days that I wish he would. It's not the life I envisioned for myself.

Young-Mi.......... Oh? What is?

Hyung-Chul....... As a child, my dream was to be a musician and perform my own songs.

Young-Mi.......... Well, you certainly have the talent for it.

He shrugs off the compliment indifferently.

Hyung-Chul....... It's just an old dream. There are more important things to deal with now ...

SCENE: Park entrance, afternoon

Walking from the car park, Woo-Jin ponders the reasons for Sun-Mi's urgent call.

He stops when he sees Sun-Mi pacing at the entrance gate.

Noticing her pensive expression, he holds back, recalling what she told him the last time they met ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 17 ]

Sun-Mi.............. Actually, I have a confession. I never intended to go through with the wedding.

Sun-Mi.............. I saw it as a way to test Senior's sincerity.

....................... Because being Cinderella doesn't happen in real life, only in fairytales ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 17 ]

Sun-Mi.............. When I see Su-Jin with Senior, they look so good together, I feel like I'm dying inside ...

Sun-Mi.............. What will I do if I -- I actually lose him? ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 17 ]

Sun-Mi.............. As long as I'm on Eve's Morning, I can't avoid Senior, and seeing him now is too hard.

Sun-Mi.............. That's why I've decided to quit MBS ...

Sensing she is being watched, Sun-Mi turns her head and sees Woo-Jin.

She forces a smile to show her gratitude for his coming.

SCENE: Han River park, afternoon

Meanwhile, Hyung-Chul and Young-Mi are strolling the Han River park walkway near the restaurant ...

Hyung-Chul....... How about you? What was your dream?

Young-Mi.......... I always wanted to be the top news announcer at MBS. You could say I'm almost living my dream.

Hyung-Chul....... Not many people can say that so young. You must be happy.

She answers thoughtfully ...

Young-Mi.......... It's not like I imagined. I've found that just living your dream is not enough.

....................... You need someone you care about to share it with. But you know about that, too.

Hyung-Chul doesn't answer, and they walk on in silence ...

SCENE: Park, afternoon

Woo-Jin and Sun-Mi find a quiet place to sit by the lake, where they can talk privately.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm not bothering you, right?

Woo-Jin............ Bothering? Of course not. How would meeting you be bothersome?

Sun-Mi smiles in response.

Woo-Jin............ Truth is, I wanted to see you too. I have something to tell you.

....................... I'm not sure if I should tell anyone else, but I have to tell you.

She looks curiously at Woo-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. What is it?

He sighs.

Woo-Jin............ You go first.

Sun-Mi.............. You first. Is it good news?

Instead, he makes a likely guess ...

Woo-Jin............ Is it about Director Yoon?

Sun-Mi looks away and takes a deep breath as if about to say something, but doesn't reply.

SCENE: Han River park, afternoon

Hyung-Chul and Young-Mi stroll along the river walkway for some distance in silence.

Occasionally, she glances apprehensively at him, but Hyung-Chul's brooding expression hides his thoughts.

Finally, he stops, and turns to face her.

Hyung-Chul....... It's far enough, we should go back now.

Young-Mi.......... I'm sorry if what I said earlier made you uncomfortable.

Hyung-Chul....... It's not what you said, but because I'm not used to talking about it.

Young-Mi.......... Are you embarrassed in front of me?

He doesn't reply.

Young-Mi.......... You needn't be. I know how hard it is, the memories coming back to haunt ...

She smiles encouragingly.

Young-Mi.......... It helps to share the burden. Let's try to support and comfort each other ...

SCENE: Park, afternoon

From Sun-Mi's silence, Woo-Jin figures he has hit the mark, and ploughs forward ...

Woo-Jin............ You still haven't told him how you really feel?

She smiles sadly.

Sun-Mi.............. How do I really feel? ... Senior and I have broken up.

Woo-Jin............ Did you maybe ...

She quickly breaks in, interrupting to ally his concern.

Sun-Mi.............. No, it's not because of you.

She looks away.

Sun-Mi.............. It's because of me ... Honestly, I don't want to keep making him wait. I was too ashamed.

Woo-Jin looks at Sun-Mi, concerned.

She sighs.

Sun-Mi.............. But I'm not sure why I'm doing this. Whoever he wants to see or meet? ... What should it matter to me?

Woo-Jin............ Is that ... Young-Mi?

Sun-Mi nods sadly. Woo-Jin looks sadder at the news.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm sorry, Woo-Jin. I know I shouldn't talk about Young-Mi with you ...

Woo-Jin closes his eyes to steel himself in anticipation of what she is going to say.

Sun-Mi.............. And I don't want to talk about Young-Mi around you ...

....................... But I saw the two of them in front of Senior's house ...

The sorrow in her voice moves Woo-Jin beyond his own hurt.

He opens his eyes, to share the anguish in hers.

Sun-Mi.............. The moment I saw them I couldn't breathe.

Woo-Jin looks at Sun-Mi with supportive empathy.

Woo-Jin............ It's OK.

He puts his hand on Sun-Mi's anad holds it comfortingly.

Woo-Jin............ Everything will be OK, Sun-Mi.

They sit silently, keeping to their own thoughts ...

SCENE: Inside Young-Mi's apartment, afternoon

Young-Mi enters her apartment, thinking happily about her time with Hyung-Chul.

Woo-Jin is sitting on a chair in the middle of the room, holding a cup, waiting for her.

When she sees him, Young-Mi stops in surprise, her smile fading ...

Young-Mi.......... Oppa?

Quickly recovering her wits, she walks past him.

Young-Mi.......... Did you wait long?

Woo-Jin............ No.

Young-Mi.......... That's good.

She sits down on the bed and opens her purse.

Woo-Jin............ Are you done with work?

Young-Mi.......... Right.

Taking a paper from her purse, Young-Mi unfolds it and begins to look it over ...

Woo-Jin............ Who told you to come out?

Young-Mi.......... Er ... Mr. Kim.

[ sound of paper rustling ]

Aware that she is lying, Woo-Jin presses ...

Woo-Jin............ What did you talk about?

Young-Mi sighs and looks over to Woo-Jin irritably.

Young-Mi.......... Why are you asking so many questions?

Woo-Jin looks challengingly at Young-Mi.

Young-Mi.......... Oh ...

She nervously adjusts her hair as she smiles uneasily.

Young-Mi.......... Nothing really ... I'm kind of tired, can I lie down?

Woo-Jin............ Sure, sleep.

As Young-Mi lies down to rest, Woo-Jin sits by the window.

Gazing outside, he ponders what to do about her continuing lies.

He looks over at Young-Mi, and sees she is asleep.

Going over to her, he gently caresses her hair.

Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi ... I understand now how plagued you are.

Tears roll down his cheek.

Woo-Jin............ I must be as plagued as you ... Young-Mi ... I love you.

SCENE: MBS building exterior, morning

The next morning ...

SCENE: Director Kim's office, morning

Sun-Mi is in an impromptu conference with Director Kim Eun-Ki ...

Eun-Ki.............. Would you like my secretary to bring coffee?

Sun-Mi.............. That's not necessary. I won't be long.

Eun-Ki.............. What's so important that you wanted to meet before hours?

Sun-Mi.............. We need to bring in a new designer, so we don't have a moment to lose. I've prepared ...

Eun-Ki.............. Whoa! One step at a time, please ... A new designer?

Sun-Mi.............. Hasn't Park Su-Jin spoken to you already?

Eun-Ki.............. Yes. She mentioned you two were having some disagreement.

....................... An old tiff that you're still carrying a grudge over. Is that true, Announcer Jin?

Sun-Mi.............. Is that what she said? It's not like that, I...

Eun-Ki.............. Whatever ... Don't you understand how this puts me in a difficult spot?

Sun-Mi.............. Excuse me?

Eun-Ki.............. The Company has invested significant resources into this program.

....................... My personal reputation and professional career are staked on a successful outcome.

....................... And now, it's all at risk because two of my team are having a hissy fit? -- Incredible!

Making the issue about him sets Sun-Mi on edge ...

Sun-Mi.............. You see this as a ... a hissy fit?

Eun-Ki.............. Announcer Jin, we're a broadcasting company, not a middle school. This is no place for petty spats.

....................... If you think Park Su-Jin disrespects you, act like a professional, and prove her wrong!

Sun-Mi.............. But ...

He raises his hand to stay her.

Eun-Ki.............. Take some time off work to think things through. Then come back and see me.

Sun-Mi.............. Director Kim, I just can't ...

Eun-Ki eyes her sternly, pointing his finger at Sun-Mi to emphasize his decision ...

Eun-Ki.............. This discussion is over. Go home. That's an order!

SCENE: MBS lift car, morning

As Sun-Mi rides the lift down, she grumbles over her abrupt dismissal by Director Kim ...

Sun-Mi.............. Huh! How can he just send me home, without even hearing me out! ... It's unfair!

When the lift car stops on the main floor, the doors open to a waiting queue ready to board.

Seeing the sole passenger, they part way for her to get off.

Sun-Mi dips her head apologetically, cheeks red with embarrassment, as if they all knew why she was going out so early.

Quickly she passes through the queue, avoiding eye contact, hoping none are her office colleagues.

SCENE: MBS main entrance, morning

Coming out the revolving door, Sun-Mi finds Su-Jin waiting by the entrance with her car.

Looking the other way, she attempts to walk past without acknowledging her.

But Su-Jin steps up to block her way.

Su-Jin............... Hey, Jin Sun-Mi, leaving early today?

Sun-Mi returns an icy glare.

Sun-Mi.............. That's none of your business!

Su-Jin............... If it's any consolation, Director Kim sent me home, too.

Her frank admission surprises Sun-Mi, but she snaps back ...

Sun-Mi.............. Did you think I care?

Su-Jin............... It's not often I get a scolding for what someone else did.

....................... Like back in school, the whole class is punished for the misdeeds of one.

Sun-Mi.............. Humph! Who said I did anything wrong?

Su-Jin............... Then why were sent home?

Anxiously, Sun-Mi looks around, but is relieved to see that no one is near enough to overhear them.

Su-Jin............... Embarrassing, isn't it? Being treated like an errant school girl?

Sun-Mi.............. Umm ...

Su-Jin............... Come on. I'll give you a ride.

Su-Jin starts to go to the driver's side of her BMW, but Sun-Mi doesn't move.

Sun-Mi.............. (coldly) You go first. I'll go my own way.

Su-Jin turns back with an grin and laughs.

Su-Jin............... Jin Sun-Mi, you really do surprise me sometimes.

Her unexpected response causes Sun-Mi to wonder.

Su-Jin............... I know I'm the last person you want to be with right now.

....................... But I thought at least you'd be curious why I made the offer ...

Act 1 - Part 4

SCENE: Su-Jin's car, morning

Sun-Mi has accepted Su-Jin's offer for a ride home ... grudgingly ...

Su-Jin looks over at her recalcitrant passenger and attempts conversation ...

Su-Jin............... What I can't grasp is why you don't care about beating Eve's Morning?

Still in a foul mood, Sun-Mi answers sullenly ...

Sun-Mi.............. I came to do Art Club because I love the Arts, not to pick a fight.

....................... Why get involved in a corporate power struggle?

Su-Jin............... So it won't bother you if the program gets cancelled?

Sun-Mi.............. It's not what I want, but if that is management's decision, what can I do?

Su-Jin............... Maybe, whatever is necessary, even if you don't like it, to try and win?

Sensing Su-Jin's drift, Sun-Mi stiffens her back.

Sun-Mi.............. Don't think you'll persuade me. I've no interest in working with a skank!

Su-Jin............... Skank? Isn't that a bit harsh?

Sun-Mi.............. With how you dress, and your behavior with men, is there a better word?

Su-Jin............... So this is about Hyung-Chul, after all.

Sun-Mi.............. As I've said before, Director Yoon and I don't have that kind of relationship.

....................... I just expected that he would have better taste in women.

Su-Jin smiles.

Su-Jin............... Perhaps you're misunderstanding him. If you knew what happened in Jeju ...

The last thing Sun-Mi wants to hear about is Hyung-Chul and Su-Jin's holiday frolicking ...

Sun-Mi.............. (quickly interrupting) We're almost there. Take the second left.

They ride on in silence as the car approaches Sun-Mi's street.

Su-Jin slows to take the turn and drive down the narrow lane.

Sun-Mi.............. It's the house at the end.

The car rolls to a stop outside the gate, but Su-Jin leaves the engine running.

Sun-Mi unfastens her seat belt and opens the car door.

Su-Jin............... I'm not expecting you to invite me in for tea. So, have a nice day off.

But instead of immediately alighting from the car, Sun-Mi stops to think, then turns back to Su-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. You haven't said why you offered me the ride ...

SCENE: MBS corridor, morning

Walking along the glass-walled corridor, Eun-Ki stops at one of the classroom doors.

SCENE: MBS classroom, morning

Opening the door, Eun-Ki sees Young-Mi waiting inside.

He enters the room, and closes the door before speaking to her.

Eun-Ki.............. What's so important that we need to meet in person?

She approaches him, her face livid ...

Young-Mi.......... What is this? I thought you were backing me, but now Jin Sun-Mi is your favorite!

He scoffs, dismissing her concerns.

Eun-Ki.............. Don't let appearances deceive you. Our agreement still holds. The News At Nine will be yours.

Young-Mi frowns dubiously.

Young-Mi.......... How can that be? We're fighting on different sides.

Eun-Ki.............. It's simple. If I win, I gain control over MBS, so the final decision is mine.

Young-Mi.......... But if you lose?

Eun-Ki.............. Then Announcer Jin loses too, adding one more stigma to a tainted record. Who'd support her?

Young-Mi.......... Director Yoon, of course!

Eun-Ki.............. He's tied his own hands, after that anti-nepotism campaign.

....................... So you see, it's the same result, whether I win or lose.

Still, Young-Mi is suspicious.

Young-Mi.......... But not for you, if Director Yoon wins. Why are you so caviliar about that?

He smiles confidently.

Eun-Ki.............. Because, in that circumstance, I still have an ace-in-the-hole to play.

....................... I can't reveal it right now, but you'll find out if I have to use it.

Young-Mi.......... So losing to Director Yoon doesn't matter to you?

Eun-Ki.............. Other than bragging rights? No. Why?

Her dark eyes narrow with determination.

Young-Mi.......... Then you won't mind if Eve's Morning beats out Art Club?

....................... Because I'm going to do everything in my power to win. I won't lose to Jin Sun-Mi!

SCENE: Sun-Mi's garden, morning

Su-Jin and Sun-Mi face off over the garden table in Sun-Mi's yard.

On one side, Sun-Mi sits tensely, impatiently awaiting Su-Jin's explanation.

On the other side, Su-Jin relaxes, absorbed with the calm ambiance of the garden greenery.

Su-Jin............... Now that I've seen for myself, I understand what it is Oppa saw in you.

Her use of the familiar term irks Sun-Mi ...

Sun-Mi.............. How could you? You hardly know anything about me!

Su-Jin............... But I know a lot about him, and that explains something I've pondered a lot recently.

She regards Sun-Mi contemptously.

Su-Jin............... If it was because of intelligence, or beauty, or talent, it would be easy to understand.

....................... But because you're an unremarkable woman with no outstanding attributes or achievements --

....................... just a mediocre person -- it really was quite a mystery.

Sun-Mi looks at Su-Jin incredulously.

Sun-Mi.............. You're saying that Senior only liked me because I'm mediocre and clumsy?

Su-Jin............... More or less. What else could it be?

....................... A man like him can have anything he wants, surely you know that!

....................... So why keep you around, except for the occasional good laugh? A jester for the king?

Su-Jin's remark conjures up an old, hurtful demon that Sun-Mi has never been able to completely dismiss ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 9 ]

Hyung-Chul. No matter where I go in this world, I'm asked whose son I am.

................. But to you I was just another person. Do you know how precious knowing you was to me?

Sun-Mi........ Because I was an idiot! You were probably amused that everyone knew except for me.

Sun-Mi........ How much did you laugh at me? ... How amusing was it to you? ...

................. Would a puppet have been as stupid as me? Even mannequins behind windows aren't treated like me.

Continuing on, Su-Jin cuts deeper ...

Su-Jin............... Apprise yourself honestly -- what about you is worth a man of his position and abilities?

....................... You can't name one thing, can you? Just one ...

Baited by Su-Jin's disparagements, humiliated and angry, finally Sun-Mi can't take it anymore.

Incensed, she jumps to her feet, wide-eyed, hands clenched, sputtering ...

Sun-Mi.............. Who -- who do you think you are?! ... You -- you ...

Maintaining her air of complacent disdain, Su-Jin slowly stands up, meeting Sun-Mi's bluster with a smug grin.

Su-Jin............... Tsk -- tsk. Can't take the truth? Grow up, Announcer Jin Sun-Mi!

Su-Jin's offhand remark pushes another of Sun-Mi's hot buttons ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 11 ]

Hyung-Chul. You're immature and naive. You don't know what reality is ...

The accumulation triggers a spontaneous meltdown ...

Sun-Mi sees red.

Intent on wiping away that self-satisfied grin, she draws her right arm back and forcefully swings it forward.

Her open palm strikes Su-Jin's left cheek with a loud, sharp thwak, whipping her head back to the side.

Su-Jin slowly turns to look icily at Sun-Mi. She touches her hand lightly to her reddened cheek.

Su-Jin............... How gauche. But why am I not surprised, as you've had nothing coherent to say?

Raising her hand as if to strike Su-Jin again, Sun-Mi threatens instead.

Sun-Mi.............. You should leave -- now -- while I'm still holding back!

Disregarding the warning, Su-Jin stands her ground, her dark glare threatening escalation.

But a deep, steadying breath helps her maintain control.

Su-Jin............... We'll settle this another time! But what are you going to tell Director Kim?

Sun-Mi.............. What is it to you?! ... See yourself out!

Not waiting for Su-Jin to leave, she stalks off across the yard to the house.

Watching Sun-Mi storm into the house, Su-Jin muses to herself ...

Su-Jin............... Jin Sun-Mi, at least you have some spunk in you.

Su-Jin............... Because you're going to need every bit of it you can muster.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's home, morning

Inside, Sun-Mi fumes ...

Sun-Mi.............. Humph!! -- "An unremarkable woman with no outstanding attributes" -- The nerve!!

She closes her eyes and leans back against the wall, giving herself time to calm.

But she can't shake Su-Jin's words from her mind ...

Su-Jin............... (V.O.) So why keep you around, except for the occasional good laugh? A jester for the king ...

A tear trickles down her cheek, which she irritably brushes off, upset at herself.

Sun-Mi.............. Crying isn't going to make things any better!

She recalls what she'd claimed once on her radio show, considering the irony ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 17 ]

Sun-Mi........ You know, shedding tears could dehydrate your body.

Sun-Mi........ It's bad for your health. That's why I never cry ...

Feeling thirsty, she goes into the kitchen for a drink of water.

There, she finds the remains of her father's breakfast cluttering the sink.

The mess turns her thoughts in a new direction ...

Sun-Mi.............. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, why not do something useful?

Determination sets in her eyes.

Sun-Mi.............. It's time for a good Spring cleaning ... and a fresh start ...

SCENE: MBS conference room, afternoon

The Eve's Morning team has gathered for an emergency meeting.

Team Leader Kim Sun-Dal is the focus of attention at the head of the conference table.

Sun-Dal............ Thanks for making time on such short notice. Let's get right to it.

Sun-Dal............ You've heard the rumors? It's true. Our future depends on winning the next sweeps.

....................... The table is open for everyone's ideas, so don't hold back. Anyone?

Ki-Jong............. How can a special interest program with a niche audience, win over a general program like ours?

PD................... Good question. The relative finances available is one factor in their favor.

....................... With Jin Sun-Mi as sole emcee, Art Club has more to spend on PR and production.

Sun-Dal............ They'll also make a big splash at the premiere, using media coverage to pull in a wider audience.

Kyung-Hee........ So we'll have to compete by having better stories that people want to see.

Everyone nods in agreement.

PD................... I'll have Marketing run a new audience interest survey for topics.

Sun-Dal............ Good. Anyone else?

He scans the room for volunteers, stopping at Young-Mi when she raises her hand to get his attention.

Sun-Dal............ Young-Mi?

Young-Mi.......... Could we do something about our cross-chatter to make the transitions more interesting?

Ki-Jong takes the cue to jokingly chime in ...

Ki-Jong............. Ah! -- Finally I'll have the chance to tell some of my jokes, right?

Laughter erupts around the room.

Sun-Dal............ I was thinking more like something scripted by the writers.

All heads turn toward the lead writer for her response.

Writer............... We'll step up and do our part. But we need to arrange work sessions with the announcers.

Sun-Dal............ Okay. Kyung-Hee? Can you coordinate between the announcers and writers?

Kyung-Hee........ Got it.

Sun-Dal............ Anything more?

Young-Mi raises her hand, again.

Young-Mi.......... What about changes to the set? We could add props that draw interest to the day's main stories.

PD................... There's a cost to that.

Kyung-Hee adds her support to the idea ...

Kyung-Hee........ But it could also trigger audience anticipation for seeing something new each day.

PD................... Even so, where would we put them?

Jin-Soo............. There's space on the desk where Sun-Mi used to sit.

PD................... Who's going to take charge of acquiring and organizing this? I don't have the time.

Speaking up, Sun-Dal puts an end to the contention ...

Sun-Dal............ It's worth looking into. We can decide at our next meeting.

Reluctantly, the PD makes a note to follow up.

PD................... I'll have the set designer work up estimates.

Sun-Dal nods his approval.

Sun-Dal............ Good ... Next, anyone?

SERIES OF SCENES: Sun-Mi's home, afternoon

[ All About Eve instrumental theme song -- True Love -- throughout ]

Changing into work clothes, Sun-Mi embarks on a whole-house cleaning, starting in the kitchen ...

Next she tackles the main living area ...

Then she moves upstairs, to her bedroom ...

And finishes up by giving the bathrooms a thorough scrubbing ...

SCENE: MBS conference room, afternoon

The Eve's Morning team nears the end of their afternoon brain-storming session ...

Sun-Dal............ We've had a lot of great ideas so far. Last call ...

Young-Mi raises her hand.

Sun-Dal............ Yes, Young-Mi? You seem to have a lot to say today.

Young-Mi.......... That's because I want this team to win!

Sun-Dal smiles.

Sun-Dal............ Now that's the attitude I'm hoping everyone here will adopt, too ... Go on ...

She looks at Jin-Soo.

Young-Mi.......... Let's not forget our program has an ace-in-the-hole, Mr. Buzzy Bumblebee.

Young-Mi.......... What if we extend his promo spots for the Charity Gala into a new Children's News corner?

....................... Buzzy could provide humorous reports on education, health, etc, to inform busy moms.

Her idea catches Jin-Soo by surprise.

Jin-Soo............. Huh? You want me to be 'Buzzy' permanently?

Frowning, the PD quickly throws cold water.

PD................... It's a big risk to change any programming at this time. We'll need to get the Director's approval.

Jin-Soo............. He's right. Let's table this ...

Smiling assuredly, Young-Mi cuts in --

Young-Mi.......... I already spoke to Director Yoon. He gave the go-ahead for pilot segments with a PR buildup.

....................... That will give us something to counter Art Club's campaign.

Sun-Dal adds his approval.

Sun-Dal............ Very good, Young-Mi. It seems that you've put a lot of thought into this.

She modestly dips her head.

Young-Mi.......... The credit goes to 'Buzzy', for beating Sun-Mi in the ratings before. Let's see if he can do it again.

Clapping his hands together to get everyone's attention, Ki-Jong speaks up loudly ...

Ki-Jong............. Let's hear it for 'Buzzy' ... everyone!

The entire team starts an enthusiastic round of applause.

Red-faced, Jin-Soo mutters aloud ...

Jin-Soo............. What am I getting myself into?

Next to him, Kyung-Hee jests back.

Kyung-Hee ....... Possibly the start of a new career in comedy ...

SCENE: Sun-Mi's kitchen, afternoon

After a full day of cleaning, Sun-Mi prepares a tasty dinner for herself -- tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes)!

Carrying the dish from cooktop to table, she sits down to enjoy her meal.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, evening

Sun-Dal is in Hyung-Chul's office for a late meeting ...

Hyung-Chul....... It seems Young-Mi has really stepped up in the face of Kim's challenge.

Sun-Dal............ Yes, she's working hard. Finally I'm seeing less of 'Queen Young-Mi' and more of a team player.

Hyung-Chul....... Could she replace Joo-Hee as Team Leader?

Sun-Dal............ Why? Is there something about Joo-Hee I should know?

Hyung-Chul....... I thought you wanted her to resign after getting married.

Sun-Dal............ If it were up to me -- yes -- but she has her own ideas.

Hyung-Chul....... Still, we should plan for all possible options.

Sun-Dal............ Does one of those options include Sun-Mi?

Hyung-Chul looks down at his desk.

In the awkward silence, Sun-Dal quickly comes up with a reasonable escape ...

Sun-Dal............ Sorry, I've gotta go first. Joo-Hee wants to catch a bite before doing the News.

Hyung-Chul looks up again, his mood more subdued than before.

Hyung-Chul....... Let's meet up at the club later, for a drink.

Sun-Dal............ Sure. Thats sounds good.

Hyung-Chul....... It's been a while since I've put one down with my old drinking buddy.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bathroom, evening

After dinner, Sun-Mi relaxes with a warm bubblebath and a glass of wine.

Soaking in the tub, her thoughts go back to happier times with Hyung-Chul ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 06 ]

Sun-Mi........ I missed you. You have no idea how many times I missed the time I was in London with you.

Hyung-Chul. Smile ... Your smiling face is so pretty.

Hyung-Chul. So I want to take a picture with my eyes and remember it. Come on, smile ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 09 ]

Sun-Mi........ Actually, although I said we're through, I was just afraid. Life isn't the same without you by my side.

Hyung-Chul. Finally, you smiled.

Sun-Mi........ I don't know why I smile so much.

Hyung-Chul. Yes, I love it when you smile. It's really beautiful.

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 12 ]

Hyung-Chul. This is your expression that I like the most.

Hyung-Chul. I'll always make you smile like this. I promise.

Sipping her wine, she contemplates ...

Sun-Mi.............. Why is it only my smile he mentions? Is that all he sees me as? A smiling fool?

She sips again, this time with a bitter taste in her mouth, and darker thoughts ...

Sun-Mi.............. Maybe that's why he avoids talking about it.

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 15 ]

Hyung-Chul. Why didn't you tell me the truth?

Sun-Mi........ Sorry. I don't know what I should say to you.

Hyung-Chul. When I think you're coming closer, you take a step backward. It's tiring ... but I can wait for you.

Sun-Mi........ Why are you so good to me?

Hyung-Chul. I'm not so sure why either. If you find out why, tell me.

But the sour mood passes swiftly.

Sun-Mi.............. What am I thinking? Senior isn't like that. He always treated me nice, even when I was bad to him ...

....................... He's not that kind of person. So he couldn't be like Su-Jin says he is.

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's club, night

After work, Hyung-Chul whiles the time away at his club, smoking and drinking, as he waits for Sun-Dal to arrive.

Seared into memory, his final minutes with Sun-Mi replay in his mind ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 16 ]

Hyung-Chul. Do you want to end things with me?

Sun-Mi........ (nods)

Sun-Mi........ If you have nothing left to ...

Hyung-Chul. I do ... I'd like it if you didn't reject being the Art Club MC because of Eve's Morning.

Sun-Mi........ You act like you're concerned. But you tell everyone that we've broken up behind my back ...

Sun-Mi........ Senior, how do you truly feel?

Hyung-Chul. It's a great opportunity for you.

Sun-Mi........ What does it matter to you? ... See ya. Good bye!

He inhales on his cigarette, exhales a plume, and stubs the butt into a nearby ash tray as he wonders ...

Hyung-Chul....... What did I say that set her off? I just don't get it.

Raising his half-full glass of bourbon, he puts it to his lips, tips it up, and drains it with a long swallow.

As he starts to reach for the bottle to pour a refill, his mobile rings.

Taking the phone out he flips it open and checks the caller ID before putting it to his ear.

Hyung-Chul....... You're late.

While listening to the caller's response, he refills his glass, emptying the bottle.

Hyung-Chul....... Sure, I understand. Give my regards to Joo-Hee ... Bye.

Closing the phone, Hyung-Chul sets it on the table, then hears a familiar voice ...

Young-Mi.......... Director Yoon?

Hyung-Chul turns his head and sees Young-Mi standing beside his table.

Young-Mi.......... Do you mind?

He shrugs noncommittally.

Hyung-Chul....... Since you're here, have a seat.

Young-Mi sits down in the adjacent chair.

Young-Mi.......... Thanks.

Hyung-Chul....... Your preference?

Young-Mi.......... What you're having is fine.

Hyung-Chul motions, and an attentive waiter appears.

Waiter.............. Director Yoon?

Hyung-Chul points to the empty bottle.

Hyung-Chul....... Bring another. And a glass for my friend.

Waiter.............. Yes.

After the waiter leaves, Hyung-Chul notices that Young-Mi is smiling happily.

Young-Mi.......... It felt good, hearing that.

Hyung-Chul....... What?

Young-Mi.......... Your saying it -- 'friend' -- sincerely.

He nods, acknowledging his unconscious use of the word.

Hyung-Chul....... What brings you out tonight? You don't usually frequent this place.

Young-Mi.......... Somehow, I felt drawn to come. Then I saw you were here, too.

Hyung-Chul....... Some coincidence, eh?

Young-Mi.......... I don't believe in coincidence, but in fate.

He looks off wistfully.

Hyung-Chul....... Once I did, too, but I'm not so certain anymore.

....................... Still, I'm glad you're here. I've been jilted, and can use a new drinking buddy.

She smiles self-consciously.

Young-Mi.......... I'll take that responsibility seriously. So tell me. What brings YOU here tonight?

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

After her bath, Sun-Mi sits at her desk, looking through the contents of her "memory" box.

She opens the card Hyung-Chul had left on her desk after she'd blurted out a banned word on the news broadcast ...

[To Sun-Mi. you did a great job today. You're one of a kind. Keep up the good work Y ]

The memory brings a chagrined smile to her lips.

Sun-Mi.............. I'm still as much an fool today as I was then ...

She sighs.

Sun-Mi.............. What if Su-Jin is right? That it's only because I'm a talentless idiot?

She returns the card to the box and puts on the lid.

Then she picks up the wine glass from her desk, swirling the deep red liquid as she dwells on Joo-Hee's advice ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 16 ]

Joo-Hee............ Spare yourself the heartache and regrets, and avoid my fate ...

Joo-Hee............ Don't become like me, drinking away the pain, trying to forget ...

....................... End things with Hyung-Chul -- now -- before it's too late!

Sun-Mi sighs.

Sun-Mi.............. Maybe it's too late already ...

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's club, night

Drawing on his cigarette, Hyung-Chul lets a curl of smoke drift out, then looks over at Young-Mi.

Hyung-Chul....... So now you've heard, can you understand?

He crushes the butt in the ash tray.

Young-Mi.......... I do. When Woo-Jin dumped me to go back to Sun-Mi, I had those same feelings too.

....................... Reliving memories is the hardest, because your heart breaks all over again.

She sniffs as tears roll in her eyes.

Hyung-Chul holds out his handkerchief to her.

Hyung-Chul....... Here. Dry your eyes, while I pour you another.

Young-Mi.......... Thanks.

She daubs the cloth to her face as he refills her glass, then his.

Their glasses touch with a ring of crystal, then they sip meditatively.

Hyung-Chul....... Once I thought I'd never love someone. Now, it's that I'll never love again. Does the pain ever end?

He takes out his cigarette case to light up another.

Young-Mi.......... They say "Time heals all wounds" but in my experience, only a new love can heal that scar.

....................... It's ironic, isn't it? Sun-Mi has everything I ever wanted. That why I hate her!

....................... But at the same time, I wish we were like sisters. Love and hate, they're not that far apart, right?

He contemplatively takes a long drag on his cigarette.

Hyung-Chul....... Love and hate. Maybe that explains how Sun-Mi feels, too, and why there's nothing I can do about it.

Young-Mi's eyes perk up.

Young-Mi.......... I know that I should wish him well and move on, for my own well-being. How about you?

Hyung-Chul....... Huh?

Young-Mi.......... Perhaps we could help each other to do ...

She stops as a waiter appears with a plate of finger foods.

Waiter.............. Compliments of the Captain, in appreciation for the other night.

Hyung-Chul....... Oh? Give him my regards.

Waiter.............. I will ... Enjoy.

After the waiter walks off, Young-Mi wonders aloud.

Young-Mi.......... What was that about?

Hyung-Chul....... I played a few songs on the piano at the Captain's request.

Young-Mi pretends ignorance.

Young-Mi.......... Really? You must play very well.

Hyung-Chul....... It's only a hobby.

Young-Mi.......... Can you humor me?

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi lies in bed, unable to sleep, stewing over the situation with Young-Mi and Hyung-Chul.

Sun-Mi.............. All that useless worry over Park Su-Jin, when the real threat was Young-Mi!

Sun-Mi.............. I'm such an idiot! ... Falling so easily for her tricks -- again! ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 17 ]

Young-Mi.... You broke up with him? Is that true?

Sun-Mi.............. I should've taken Young-Mi seriously ... and not taken Senior for granted ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 15 ]

Sun-Mi........ Senior's not naive like Woo-Jin.

Young-Mi.... Are you worried about me? Just admit it. Say that you won't lose him to me ...

Sun-Mi.............. What if he's starting to fall for Young-Mi? I can't let that happen, like with Woo-Jin ...

She looks over at the bedside phone.

Sun-Mi.............. Maybe it's not too late to warn him ...

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's club, night

[ piano music ]

Young-Mi is watching Hyung-Chul play on the club piano, when his mobile rings.

Curious, she picks up the phone.

Caller ID : [ Jin Sun-Mi ]

A devious scheme instantly comes to Young-Mi. She answers with a sleepy voice ...

Young-Mi.......... Umm ... Hello?

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi is puzzled when she hears Young-Mi voice ...

Sun-Mi.............. Young-Mi? Why are you on Senior's phone? Where are you?

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's club, night

Young-Mi glances towards the piano, making sure Hyung-Chul is unaware of what she is up to.

Young-Mi.......... Where do you think most people are this late at night? Should I rouse him for you?

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O. on the phone) Um ... Er ...

Young-Mi.......... I thought so. Actually, it's awkward, you calling here like this.

Young-Mi.......... If I were you I'd stop clinging, and move on! ... I'm hanging up.

She cuts the call and sets Hyung-Chul's mobile down, pleased with herself.

Young-Mi.......... I think she got the message.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi places the handset back onto the phone's cradle.

She sits on her bed, numbed by shock, Young-Mi's admonition ringing in her mind ...

Young-Mi.......... (V.O.) This is awkward ... If I were you, I'd stop clinging and move on.

Outside, a storm pelts the windows of her bedroom with cold, heavy drops.

A chill settles inside Sun-Mi as the numbness spreads, until it feels as if her heart is struggling just to keep beating.

She recalls the advice of Sister Agnes, a nun she'd met on the flight to London ...

Sister Agnes...... (V.O.) You can't force one person to love another. It always takes two to make love work ...

....................... It doesn't matter how hard one side tries, when the other isn't willing, it's useless.

....................... The way I see it, you're clinging to something comfortable for support.

Gradually, reluctantly, acceptance of the reality she has to face sinks in.

Reaching down, Sun-Mi unfastens the clasp of her anklet and removes it, holding it in her hand.

Staring at the anklet, she remembers what Hyung-Chul had said when he put it on her ...

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 13 ]

Hyung-Chul. If you give it to your sweet-heart, the two of you can meet in the next life ...

Hyung-Chul. Let's see each other in the next life.

A wry smile twists her lips as she realizes the bitter portent of his words ...

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, Senior, we'll be together ... but only in the next life.

Going to her bedside stand, Sun-Mi opens the drawer, drops the anklet inside, and closes it.

Sun-Mi.............. What was that Latin word Sister used?

Her brow wrinkles while she searches her memory, then her eyes light up.

Sun-Mi.............. Oh, yes ... 'carpe diem' ... 'seize the day' ...

SCENE: Young-Mi's apartment building exterior, night

The rain has become a torrent when a dark blue BWM stops outside Young-Mi's building.

Hyung-Chul leaves the engine running, as he and Young-Mi talk ...

Young-Mi.......... Thank you for the ride. I had a good time tonight.

Hyung-Chul....... I found it interesting, too.

Young-Mi.......... Then, good night.

She reaches for the door handle.

Hyung-Chul....... Wait. You'll be soaked. I'll get my umbrella.

After shutting off the car, he grabs an umbrella from the back and alights.

He circles around to the passenger side, opens the door for Young-Mi, and holds the umbrella over her.

Young-Mi.......... Thank you.

Together they walk back, around the car, to the street.

Just as they step out from between the parked cars, a speeding van approaches.

Catching the headlights in his peripheral vision, Hyung-Chul shouts a warning ...

Hyung-Chul....... Watch out!

Looking up, Young-Mi freezes when she sees the oncoming van bearing down on her.

But reacting instinctively, Hyung-Chul pulls her back, out of the vehicle's path.

Startled and disoriented, she huddles close to him, trembling.

Hyung-Chul....... Are you okay?

Young-Mi.......... Y--yes.

He waits until her trembling ceases, then gradually eases Young-Mi away.

Hyung-Chul....... I don't think he even saw us. Next time, watch more carefully. You could've been seriously injured.

She looks at him gratefully.

Young-Mi.......... Worse, I could've been killed, if you hadn't ...

Closing the distance between them, she kisses Hyung-Chul lightly on the lips, before he can react.

Young-Mi ......... saved me.

Caught by surprise, Hyung-Chul stares at Young-Mi, speechless.

Lowering her eyes, she acts embarrassed for her forward behavior.

Young-Mi.......... Er ... Sorry ... I don't know what came over me.

Hyung-Chul....... It's the shock. You should go in now.

He escorts Young-Mi safely to the door of her building.

Hyung-Chul....... I'll go from here.

Young-Mi.......... Director Yoon ...

She releases his arm and turns to face him.

Young-Mi ......... Drive safely.

Hyung-Chul....... Rest well. Good night, Announcer Huh Young-Mi.

Young-Mi watches from the door while he crosses the street back to his car and gets in.

As Hyung-Chul drives off, she promises to herself ...

Young-Mi.......... He's like any other man. Soon, I'll take him from Jin Sun-Mi, just as I did Woo-Jin!

SCENE: Young-Mi's apartment, night

Young-Mi enters her apartment, crossing directly to her bed.

Dropping off her purse first, she slips off her jacket and sits on the bed.

On the nearby bed stand, she reaches for a photograph turned face down.

Turning it over, tears well up as she gazes longingly at the photo of herself with Woo-Jin.

Young-Mi.......... Oppa ... I'm sorry, but I can't stop myself.

Grasping the picture, she lies down on the bed, crying.

SCENE: MBS editing room, night

Woo-Jin is watching the incriminating security tape on the editing equipment monitors.

He deletes the evidence showing Young-Mi tampering with Joo-Hee's car.

SCENE: MBS building entrance, morningt

The storm passes, scrubbing the morning sky fresh and clear.

SCENE: MBS main lobby, morning

Sun-Mi arrives at work, coming through the revolving door into the main lobby.

[ aggressive clicking of high heels on the terrazzo floor ]

As she hurries for the lifts, she makes a call on her mobile.

Sun-Mi.............. We need to meet ... Now!

Sun-Mi.............. I'll be waiting in Studio D.

SCENE: MBS canteen, morning

Meanwhile, Sun-Dal is having coffee with Joo-Hee before starting their workday ...

She frowns at him, clearly upset.

Joo-Hee............ Last night, why didn't you tell me Hyung-Chul asked you to join him at the club?

Sun-Dal............ I didn't want you worrying.

Joo-Hee............ We have to do something, to get him out of this funk over Jin Sun-Mi.

Sun-Dal............ Good luck trying. You think you can persuade Hyung-Chul?

Joo-Hee............ I was thinking maybe I can persuade Sun-Mi. Do you know what happened?

Sun-Dal sips from his cup as he considers ...

Sun-Dal............ It's not clear why things became this way.

Joo-Hee............ You believe that Hyung-Chul did something to cause this?

Sun-Dal............ Not purposefully. But there's Park Su-Jin. Also Sun-Mi's removal from Eve's Morning.

....................... Or maybe something else. Sun-Mi's not the type to break up without a reason.

He shrugs.

Sun-Dal............ You know the saying, 'Hell has no fury like a woman scorned' ...

SCENE: MBS Studio D, morning

As soon as Su-Jin steps into the studio, she feels the tension in the air, even before she sees Sun-Mi.

Waiting in the center of the space, Sun-Mi's rigid stance matches the steely resolve on her face.

Alert for a repeat of their confrontation in Sun-Mi's garden, Su-Jin approaches warily, stopping out of arm's reach.

Su-Jin............... Why did you call me here? Didn't you say you never wanted to see my face again?

Sun-Mi.............. I did, and I meant it then ... but things are different now.

Su-Jin............... You've changed your mind?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. I need your help, to beat Young-Mi and Eve's Morning.

Su-Jin............... What do you want from me?

Sun-Mi.............. Yesterday, you said you wanted to settle things between us at a later time, right?

Su-Jin............... Yes ... So?

Sun-Mi's mouth tightens.

Squeezing her hands into tight fists, she takes a step closer.

Su-Jin remains vigilant, poised for a quick response to any provocative moves.

But Sun-Mi just looks Su-Jin straight in the eyes as she speaks ...

Sun-Mi.............. This is that time ...

Sun-Mi.............. Let's settle things -- here and now!

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning

Hyung-Chul is working at his desk, going through papers.

[ intercom buzzes]

He presses the TALK button

Hyung-Chul....... Yes?

Secretary.......... (V.O. on the intercom) Announcer Huh Young-Mi is here.

Hyung-Chul....... Send her in.

Young-Mi enters the office, waiting by the open door.

Hyung-Chul....... What is it?

Young-Mi.......... I apologize for intruding.

Hyung-Chul....... Not at all.

Young-Mi.......... May I have a few minutes of your time?

Hyung-Chul....... Have a seat.

He motions to the deskside chair.

She walks over and sits down.

Hyung-Chul....... Go on.

Young-Mi.......... Last night I couldn't sleep, thinking about what you did for me, and what I owe you.

Hyung-Chul....... I just did what was necessary. You don't have to feel obligated.

Young-Mi.......... But I am, and I feel we have a bond that's deeper than colleagues, or friends ...

She pauses to look at him intensely.

Young-Mi.......... Or even lovers ...

Young-Mi.......... You're my life's savior. My life -- everything -- now belongs to you ...

SCENE: MBS Studio D, morning

Meanwhile, in the studio, Su-Jin scrutinizes Sun-Mi thoughtfully as she considers her challenge ...

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) Let's settle things between us, here and now!

Su-Jin............... Okay. What are you prepared to do?

Sun-Mi.............. I still see you as a skank, but I'm willing to look beyond that, and set the past aside ...

She hesitates, swallowing her distaste.

Sun-Mi.............. At least, for the present time. And you?

Su-Jin smiles, relishing her small, but significant, victory.

Su-Jin............... I won't take back a word, if that's what you were thinking.

....................... But I'll accept your willingness to change your attitude, even if only temporarily.

Sun-Mi.............. Then there's just one more to resolve, but I need your cooperation.

Su-Jin............... What is it?

Sun-Mi.............. Fair turnabout ...

She steps closer, so she is standing within easy reach.

Sun-Mi.............. Go ahead, slap me!

To Be Continued ...
