Act 2 - Part 1

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning

Looking intensely at Hyung-Chul, Young-Mi makes an impassioned -- and surprising -- appeal ...

Young-Mi.......... You're my life's savior. My life -- everything -- now belongs to you.

....................... Please don't reject me.

Hyung-Chul....... I'm not rejecting you. But as I've explained, you owe me nothing. Let's just forget this, okay?

Young-Mi.......... In that case, I'll go first. I'm sorry to have wasted your time.

Standing, she dips her head politely, then turns and walks slowly to the doorway.

She stops there, and turns back ...

Young-Mi.......... Regardless of what you say, I can never forget.

SCENE: MBS Studio D, morning

Confronting Su-Jin to settle their differences, Sun-Mi moves closer, standing easily within arm's reach.

Sun-Mi.............. It's fair turnabout ... so go ahead, slap me!

Closing her eyes, she steels herself for the stinging impact ... and waits ...

Puzzled when the expected strike fails to happen, Sun-Mi opens her eyes.

Su-Jin is looking at her with an amused smirk.

Sun-Mi.............. I hit you before ... What are you waiting for?

Su-Jin............... As much as I'd love to return the favor, I'll have to take a rain check.

Sun-Mi.............. Why?

Su-Jin............... We have a photo shoot today, and we need your face unswollen.

Sun-Mi.............. What photo shoot?

Su-Jin............... You haven't checked your email? It's first on this morning's agenda.

She looks over at the studio wall clock.

Su-Jin............... We have just enough time to stop for a cup of tea. Will you join me?

SCENE: Art Club studio, morning

Sun-Mi and Su-Jin sit together in the new Art Club studio's green room, talking ...

Sun-Mi.............. I had plenty of PR pictures taken for Musical Postcards. Why do you need more?

Su-Jin............... This isn't for PR, we're working on your new image.

Sun-Mi.............. My image? What's wrong as it is?

Su-Jin............... It's not a good match ...

Su-Jin............... Art Club is concepted as an avant-garde program, with a modern, edgy elegance.

....................... Sorry to say, but looking at you I don't see much that is modern, edgy, or elegant.

The snide remark irritates Sun-Mi. She argues back ...

Sun-Mi.............. That's because my 'image' is exactly what I am -- How did you put it?

....................... "Unremarkable with no outstanding features"?

Su-Jin............... So you understand what I'm talking about, and why a change is necessary.

Sun-Mi.............. You have a point, but I won the popularity award because people know what they see is real.

....................... Anything else will come across as inauthentic with the audience, because it isn't me.

Su-Jin............... Is that so? You played dress up as a child, right?

....................... Pretending to be a princess? Or a fairy? Was it not still you?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. But it was play, for fun.

Su-Jin............... Then do the same now. If you're enjoying yourself, the audience will too.

Sun-Mi regards Su-Jin's conclusion doubtfully.

Sun-Mi.............. Are you saying this will be easy, like child's play?

Su-Jin............... No. Creating a believable image is hard work. But that's my part.

....................... Yours is the easy part. All you need to do is have fun with it.

She takes a final sip of coffee.

Su-Jin............... Shall we go? The styling team will be waiting for us.

SCENE: MBS corridor, morning

Hyung-Chul and Sun-Dal are talking as they walk together.

Sun-Dal............ You want Sun-Mi to do a promo on Eve's Morning?

Hyung-Chul....... Yes, it's part of the cooperative agreement with Director Kim.

Sun-Dal............ But you're asking us to cut our own throats!

Hyung-Chul....... Don't be so dramatic. I understand your feelings, but it is an MBS program, like any other.

Sun-Dal sighs reluctantly.

Sun-Dal............ I think we'll regret it, but I'll put it in an open slot. Is a five-minute scripted interview okay?

Hyung-Chul....... That should work. Let me know the day and time. I want to watch.

SCENE: MBS photo studio, morning

At the photo shoot, the crew bustles about, making adjustments at the photographer's directions.

Photographer.... Angle that reflector just a bit more ... Check the meter ... Good? ... Okay, reaaddyy ...

[ camera shutter clicks rapidly ]

Photographer.... Now turn the other way, Sun-Mi ... that's it ...

[ camera shutter clicking ]

Photographer.... Look into the camera ... show a little smile ...

[ camera shutter clicking ]

Photographer.... Good. That's a wrap.

Su-Jin............... There's still one more left to do here.

Crew Chief........ Don't worry. We're on it.

SCENE: MBS conference room, evening

After a full day of shooting and editing, Su-Jin brings the results for Director Kim's review.

Eun-Ki.............. So Announcer Jin has decided to work with you, after all.

Su-Jin............... Yes. We came to terms.

Eun-Ki.............. How did it go?

Su-Jin............... These are the results from today's style shoot. You be the judge.

She dims the room lights with a handheld remote and turns on the slide projector.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... As you'll see, we shot a wide diversity of styles ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... To find out what goes well and what doesn't.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... I had two studio teams working in rotation ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... Eliminating the wait for setup changes, so we could shoot quickly.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... The useful output was greater than I expected. What do you think?

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Eun-Ki.............. I understand your purpose, Su-Jin, but biker leather?

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... I wanted to try some more edgy looks ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... To check out Sun-Mi's adaptability.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... with different costuming and hairstyles ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... From a simple gown and pixie ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... Or a classic Audrey Hepburn ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... To frills with full, wavy extensions ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... And a touch of glamour with an updo.

Eun-Ki.............. Hold that one ...

Eun-Ki leans forward, focusing on the slide more intensely.

Eun-Ki.............. Very interesting. I hadn't perceived Announcer Jin as having such ... versatility.

....................... You can go on.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... It turns out Sun-Mi's a natural with the camera ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... All it took was the right nudge for her to blossom.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Eun-Ki.............. Yes. I should further investigate into Announcer Jin's talents ...

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Eun-Ki.............. If these are typical of her -- er -- talents.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... What do you have in mind?

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Eun-Ki.............. A wider exposure. Variety, talk, live events. She could be MBS's prime celebrity face.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... Do you think Sun-Mi is ready?

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Eun-Ki.............. She's still young and nave, but that has advantages, too.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Eun-Ki.............. But she'll need a steady, experienced hand, to guide her properly.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

Su-Jin............... This is the last one.

Eun-Ki.............. Excellent work, Su-Jin. Have you decided on what to move forward with?

Su-Jin............... Not yet. But with these results, it likely won't be just one.

[ sounds of the projector changing slides ]

The screen goes dark.

Su-Jin brings up the room lights and turns off the projector.

Eun-Ki checks his watch, then looks over at Su-Jin.

Eun-Ki.............. It's getting late. Shall we discuss this further over dinner?

Su-Jin............... That's a great idea.

They both stand.

Eun-Ki.............. I'll call Announcer Jin, to join us.

Su-Jin............... Umm ... unfortunately, she's busy tonight.

Eun-Ki.............. Oh? With what?

Su-Jin............... Homework ... readings in advance of an early training session tomorrow.

....................... Unfortunately, I have to call it an early night, too, if you don't mind.

They start walking out of the conference room together.

Eun-Ki.............. Of course not. So it's just you and me, eh?

She slips her hand around his arm.

Su-Jin............... I prefer it that way, don't you?

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi is working at her bedroom desk ...

[ knocking sound ]

She turns to see the bedroom door open and her father coming in.

Gwi-Sung.......... Sun-Mi? Can we talk?

Sun-Mi.............. Sure, Daddy. But just for a minute. I've a lot to do yet tonight.

He sits down on the bed.

Gwi-Sung.......... That's what I wanted to talk about. Lately you're working all hours day and night.

....................... It's not healthy! After your experience, you should know that! Why don't you ...

Irritated by his scolding, she objects ...

Sun-Mi.............. Daddy! I'm not a child anymore!

Gwi-Sung.......... I know, but you're still my little girl. It's a father's right to be concerned about his daughter.

He pats the bed beside him as an invitation.

Getting up from her desk chair, Sun-Mi moves to sit on the bed, turning to him.

Sun-Mi.............. A lot has happened lately. Things I haven't talked about, because I didn't want you to worry.

Gwi-Sung.......... Parents worry even more when their children hold back. What is it?

Sun-Mi.............. I've decided to focus on my career first, and put other matters aside for now.

Sensing she isn't telling everything, he gently probes ...

Gwi-Sung.......... Other matters?

Sun-Mi's sudden flush as she averts her eyes confirms his perception.

Gwi-Sung.......... You can tell me. I'm your father.

Growing redder with shame, she seeks an escape ...

Sun-Mi.............. Can we talk about that some other time? I really am busy.

He nods, reluctantly accepting her reticence.

Gwi-Sung.......... Sure ... Sorry, I didn't mean to pry.

But turning away her father's loving concern adds guilt to Sun-Mi's discomfit.

Torn by internal conflict, she doesn't know how to reply.

An awkward silence ensues, until Gwi-Sung clears his throat.

Gwi-Sung.......... Then I'll go now. Don't stay up too late.

Sun-Mi.............. (quietly) Yes.

But as Gwi-Sung is rising to his feet, Sun-Mi finally comes to her decision.

Sun-Mi.............. Daddy, before you go, there's something I want to say first ...

Immediately, he sits down again.

Gwi-Sung.......... Oh?

He waits patiently while Sun-Mi takes a deep breath and slowly exhales, readying herself ...

SCENE: Hotel exterior, night

After leaving MBS, Director Kim takes Su-Jin to a nearby five-star Yeouido hotel for dinner ...

SCENE: Hotel restaurant, night

Su-Jin and Eun-Ki are seated in the bustling hotel restaurant filled with well-dressed diners.

A waiter in black tie comes to their table, greeting his guests with a polite bow.

Waiter.............. The usual, Director Kim?

Eun-Ki.............. It's a special occasion. Do you have a bottle of PVW 20?

Waiter.............. Excellent choice, Sir. And for the lady?

Su-Jin............... I'll have the same.

Waiter.............. It will be just a minute.

Su-Jin............... This is a very exclusive place! How did you get in without a reservation?

Eun-Ki.............. The Company keeps a penthouse suite on retainer for entertaining and use by visiting executives.

....................... It's quite luxurious, with a private spa. Worth stopping in for a look after dinner, if you'd like.

He pauses, holding the offer open.

Su-Jin responds with an equivocal smile, raising an intrigued eyebrow, but saying nothing -- leaving him to interpret.

Eun-Ki clears his throat, resuming his explanation ...

Eun-Ki.............. We also frequent this restaurant for business meetings, so they're quite accommodating.

Su-Jin............... I see. Does that make this dinner business, or personal?

Eun-Ki.............. What do you mean?

Su-Jin............... Do you bring all your dates here? Or am I the exception?

He leans forward, focusing his attention admiringly.

Eun-Ki.............. You are quite the exception, Su-Jin.

She smiles at the compliment.

Su-Jin............... That's why I prefer mature men. They know how to appreciate the best in bourbon, and women.

The waiter returns with a full decanter and two crystal Glen Cairn glasses on a tray.

After placing the glasses on the table, he pours each, then sets the decanter near Eun-Ki's right.

Waiter.............. Enjoy.

Eun-Ki.............. Shall we?

He raises his glass to hers, touching with a clear, bright ring.

Eun-Ki.............. To a memorable evening with a charming partner.

Su-Jin............... Cheers.

SCENE: Sun-Mi's bedroom, night

Sun-Mi.............. It's embarrassing, so please Daddy, just listen first ...

Gwi-Sung nods.

Sun-Mi.............. Do you remember how I wanted to be an announcer and spread happy news to the world?

....................... Promising that someday I'd achieve my dream to be the nine o'clock news anchor on MBS?

....................... And you'd say if I ever did that, you'd be the proudest dad in the whole wide world?

Gwi-Sung.......... Of course! What father isn't proud to watch his little girl grow up to be a success, like you have?

Sun-Mi.............. A success? Well ... that is ... There's something you need to know, Daddy ...

She sighs, relieved to finally share her burden.

Sun-Mi.............. You knew that I was disciplined because of my mistakes, but not everything.

....................... I was removed from the active News announcer roster, and placed into remedial retraining.

....................... It was embarrassing, so I never told you I'd failed, because then you'd be disappointed in me.

Gwi-Sung.......... Why should I be disappointed? You're still my daughter. Nothing else counts.

Sun-Mi.............. I knew you'd say that, but it's hard for me to feel that way.

Gwi-Sung.......... Is that why you're working so much?

She nods.

Sun-Mi.............. Recently I was given a second chance, and I don't want to mess up.

Gwi-Sung.......... This new program you mentioned?

Sun-Mi.............. Right. The Director says if it's a success I could become one of MBS' top celebrities.

....................... I'm hoping then I could use that to get my own small daily talk show.

Hearing this, Gwi-Sung responds enthusiastically...

Gwi-Sung.......... Wow! ... My little girl, a famous talk show celebrity! Like Oprah?!

She smiles self-deprecatingly at the comparison.

Sun-Mi.............. I doubt I'll be as famous, or so good as she is, but that's not my goal.

....................... It's that I can still encourage people, like I wanted to do with the News.

....................... This is my dream now, Daddy. It's not so grand as before, but what do you think?

Gwi-Sung.......... It's not whether you succeed or fail, or how grand it is, but that you never gave up your dream.

He grins widely.

Gwi-Sung.......... And that makes me the proudest father in the whole wide world!

SCENE:Yeouido-dong, dawn

Dawn of a new work day ...

SCENE: Exterior of MBS office and studios, morning

Running late, Sun-Mi hurries into the MBS south gate entrance ...

SCENE: Art Club studio, morning

In the Art Club studio, Su-Jin is watching the clock impatiently ...

Su-Jin............... Where is that twerp today?

[ click of a latch as a door opens ]

[ high heels clatter briefly on a hard floor, then stop ]

[ click of a latch as a heavy door swings shut ]

[ high heel taps at quick pace, echoing in a large, open space ]

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) Su-Jin? Are you here?

As she hurries onto the studio set and sees Su-Jin, Sun-Mi flashes a smile of apology.

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry I'm late.

Su-Jin steps forward to meet her, clearly unhappy.

Seeing this, the smile drops from Sun-Mi's face.

Su-Jin............... This is the third time this week!

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry. I overslept, and missed the ...

Su-Jin cuts her off brusquely.

Su-Jin............... Excuses are useless. We have a full schedule today, and already we're 15 minutes behind!

Sun-Mi.............. Sorry. It won't happen again.

Su-Jin............... You're right it won't! Tomorrow I'm sending you to work myself.

Sun-Mi.............. But ...

Su-Jin............... 5:30 a.m. -- Be at your gate, or my car horn is loud enough to wake the neighborhood. Got it?

Sun-Mi takes the threat seriously ...

Sun-Mi.............. I'll be waiting.

Su-Jin............... Good ... Is there anything else before we start?

Sun-Mi.............. Umm ... What's with all the shoes today?

She points to one of several rolling carts that hold dozens of pairs in different styles, colors, and heel heights.

Su-Jin............... I had wardrobe send them here, for our morning's training exercise.

Sun-Mi.............. Weren't we to work on presentation skills?

Su-Jin............... Correct, and presentation starts with physical presence.

....................... You're not anchored to a news desk, or doing a standup anymore. You can move around.

....................... So your first lesson is learning how to walk correctly.

Sun-Mi.............. Why? I walk just fine already.

Su-Jin............... Do you? ... Then show me. Cross the set, turn, and come back ...

Sun-Mi.............. (grumbling) This is ridiculous! Everyone knows how to walk!

But as instructed, she starts across the set, moving at a brisk pace ...

When Sun-Mi arrives at the halfway point, Su-Jin has already seen enough.

Su-Jin............... Stop!

Sun-Mi stops walking abruptly.

Su-Jin............... It's completely wrong!

Irritated at the harsh criticism, Sun-Mi turns to confront Su-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. What do you mean, WRONG?

Su-Jin............... I mean we have a lot of work to do today, to make it RIGHT.

For a tense moment, the two women exchange stony glares.

Then Su-Jin offers a conciliatory smile, adopting a calm, matter-of-fact tone ...

Su-Jin............... You walk from habit, not consciously thinking about it, correct?

Sun-Mi.............. Umm ... yes.

Su-Jin............... Then you really don't know how you walk, right?

Sun-Mi.............. (reluctantly) I suppose so.

Su-Jin............... Let me show you, so you can see for yourself.

....................... Next, I'll show how I'd like you to walk, and we can discuss which is better.

....................... Agree?

Sun-Mi.............. Agree.

Su-Jin............... Let's start with something easy to perceive, how you favor your right foot.

....................... It makes your step unbalanced, so you weave slightly.

Tracing Sun-Mi's path, she explains as she demonstrates, stepping slowly and deliberately.

Su-Jin............... This is how you walk ...

She pauses, feet together, then starts off again at the same slow pace.

Su-Jin............... And this is the proper way. See the difference?

Sun-Mi.............. (chastened) Yes.

Arriving at the center of the set, Su-Jin stops and points to the floor at her feet.

Su-Jin............... Imagine you're on a tightrope. If you don't stay balanced and walk straight, you'll fall off, right?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. I get the point.

Su-Jin............... Now, you try it again ...

SCENE: Exterior of Hyung-Chul's villa, morning

SCENE: Hyung-Chul's villa, morning

Hyung-Chul is dressing for work, tying his necktie.

[ doorbell chimes ]

When he opens the door, Hyung-Chul finds Young-Mi standing outside.

She flashes a smile to ease the awkward situation.

Young-Mi.......... Good morning, Director Yoon.

Hyung-Chul....... Announcer Huh, what brings you here?

Young-Mi.......... May I step inside, so we can talk? I don't want to bother your neighbors.

He moves back, so Young-Mi can come in, and closes the door.

Hyung-Chul....... What did you want to say?

Young-Mi.......... I came to discuss some new programming ideas with you.

Hyung-Chul....... Couldn't it wait until we're in the office?

Young-Mi.......... We have the early meeting today, and I wanted to go through everything with you first.

Hyung-Chul....... There isn't time to do it here.

Young-Mi.......... Then we can discuss it as we go together.

Hyung-Chul....... But ...

Young-Mi.......... I'll drive, so you can read through this.

She holds out a sheaf of papers in a manila folder, fastened with a large binder clip.

Young-Mi.......... Shall we go now?

SCENE: Art Club studio, morning

From her seat in the back of the Art Club set, Su-Jin watches as Sun-Mi practices ...

[ steady tapping of high heels on a hardwood floor ]

Su-Jin............... Turn. And again.

At the end of the set, Sun-Mi pivots on one foot and starts off again.

Su-Jin............... (V.O.) No ... that's not it.

Sun-Mi stops.

After pondering the problem, Su-Jin announces the diagnosis ...

Su-Jin............... Your step still falls flat, and your cadence is irregular.

....................... Add a bit more verve when you roll off the toe, but don't bounce.

....................... And don't look so serious. You need to show a smile, for the audience.

She smiles to counter the criticism.

Su-Jin.............. Just a bit more practice, and you'll have it perfect.

But across the set, Sun-Mi is glowering at Su-Jin, fed up ...

Sun-Mi.............. Enough! -- It's just too much!

....................... Anyway, what difference will it make, if I don't do it perfectly?

....................... I'm a program emcee, not a fashion model strutting a catwalk!

Su-Jin responds to the outburst with a poised, empathetic voice ...

Su-Jin............... You must be tired. Let's take a break.

SCENE: Young-Mi's car, morning

As she drives, Young-Mi converses with Hyung-Chul about her program ideas ...

Young-Mi.......... I understand your concern about the logistics, but you do get my point?

Hyung-Chul....... It's a big risk, to bring it all together flawlessly.

She glances at him and smiles.

Young-Mi.......... Still -- big risk, big reward -- right?

He grins and nods, looking back.

Hyung-Chul....... Yes.

Young-Mi.......... We have to 'break the mold' if we're going to beat Sun-Mi ...

Too late, she catches her verbal slip up.

The convivial atmosphere dies as Hyung-Chul's face darkens, but says nothing.

She immediately tries to recover the situation.

Young-Mi.......... Sorry, I know you don't want me to mention Sun-Mi in front of you. It was inadvertent.

Hyung-Chul....... Was it? Aren't you taking this competition too personally?

Young-Mi.......... I've dedicated myself to being your best partner at work. To repaying you for my life.

....................... Director Kim is challenging your rightful position as head of MBS.

....................... And Sun-Mi has gone over to his side, helping him achieve his goal.

She glances over at Hyung-Chul, her face hard.

Young-Mi.......... So, yes, it's personal.

Then her expression softens.

Young-Mi.......... Sorry, I know I can get intense sometimes. I really don't hate Sun-Mi, or wish her ill.

....................... It's just puzzling, why she is doing this. Do you know, Director?

Raising the papers in his hand, Hyung-Chul steers the conversation back on track.

Hyung-Chul....... About this next one, I agree with you ...

SCENE: MBS Rooftop, morning

Sun-Mi and Su-Jin take their break out on the rooftop ...

Su-Jin............... Nothing like fresh air to clear the mind. Feel better now?

Sun-Mi.............. It's just frustrating, that's all. Like I have two left feet.

Su-Jin............... Actually, you're not doing that bad. It's a skill, adjusting to quick changes in heels.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes ... But you make it look so easy.

Su-Jin smiles.

Su-Jin............... Do I?

Sun-Mi.............. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I envy you in many ways.

....................... Sometimes I find myself wondering what it'd be like, to have your life instead of mine.

Hearing this, Su-Jin turns to look closely at Sun-Mi, curious to see if she is serious.

Sun-Mi quickly takes a long sip from her cup, blocking her face from Su-Jin's scrutiny.

Taking the opportunity, Su-Jin returns to Sun-Mi's earlier complaint on the set ...

Su-Jin............... You asked what difference does it make, how you walk?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes. I don't know why you consider it so important.

Su-Jin............... As an emcee your presence personalizes what the viewer is experiencing.

....................... Everything you do either enhances or detracts from that experience -- every time.

....................... It's part of why the audience will continue to watch Art Club and want to come back, or not.

Sun-Mi bristles at being lectured to ...

Sun-Mi.............. Of course, everyone knows that!

But Su-Jin is determined to drive home her lesson.

Su-Jin............... Do you? It's one thing to know that up here ...

She points up to Sun-Mi's right temple.

Su-Jin............... But another to accomplish it down there ...

She points down to Sun-Mi's legs.

Su-Jin............... There's no time to 'think about it' -- the body must instinctively react without hesitation.

....................... Your movements should be fluid and precise, while appearing spontaneous and natural.

....................... And that requires repetition. It's no different whether you're an emcee or a fashion model.

Sun-Mi gazes contemplatively into her cup, contrite.

Sun-Mi.............. Someone once told me I should work harder and become a popular celebrity.

....................... It took a long time, and a second chance, to understand and take that advice to heart.

She looks up at Su-Jin.

Sun-Mi.............. I apologize for my attitude just now. It seems I have a lot to learn yet.

Su-Jin............... Becoming a celebrity requires more than hard work, there are other costs, too.

....................... You have to be willing to sacrifice everything else, to achieve it. Can you do that?

Sun-Mi.............. Until recently, I wasn't prepared to make those sacrifices. But I think I am now.

....................... Will you help me? I want to be good enough to become a celebrity ... like you.

Surprised by Sun-Mi's reply, Su-Jin decides to challenge her commitment.

Su-Jin............... Then you'll accept as your teacher someone who is a 'skank'?

Sun-Mi.............. If you'll accept as your student someone who's just a 'mediocre jester'.

They share a smile, their differences finally settled.

Su-Jin extends her hand, which Sun-Mi readily clasps for a heartfelt handshake.

Su-Jin............... We have a lot to do in a short time ... It's only a few days until your debut appearance.

Sun-Mi.............. What debut?

Su-Jin............... Your promo on Eve's Morning . We'll use it to tease the new Jin Sun-Mi.

Sun-Mi.............. Huh?

Su-Jin............... I'll explain later. Shall we go in, and pick up where we left off?

Sun-Mi nods.

Sun-Mi.............. You go first. I still have my tea to finish.

Su-Jin recognizes this as asking for some time to think --- alone.

Su-Jin............... Okay. See you later, in the studio.

SCENE: Street outside MBS office complex, morning

Young-Mi and Hyung-Chul continue their conversation as they approach the MBS office complex ...

Young-Mi.......... Can I count on your support in the meeting?

Hyung-Chul....... Of course. You've convinced me this has potential. Your work is commendable.

She smiles.

Young-Mi.......... Is it?

A moment later, her smile vanishes as Young-Mi's face turns sullen.

Hyung-Chul turns to look at what has changed her attitude so abruptly ...

SCENE: Art Club studio, morning

Back in the studio, Su-Jin reflects on her rooftop exchange with Sun-Mi ...

Su-Jin............... (V.O.) Then you'll accept as your teacher someone who is a 'skank'?

Sun-Mi.............. (V.O.) If you'll accept as your student someone who's just a 'mediocre jester'.

Su-Jin............... How ironic, Jin Sun-Mi, that you envy me, and want to live my life.

....................... Because the only person in the whole world I wish I could be,

....................... Is the person Yoon Hyung-Chul has given his heart to ... you.

SCENE: MBS outside car park, morning

In the car park, Young-Mi's car stops in an empty space.

She and Hyung-Chul alight at the same time.

Hyung-Chul waits while Young-Mi circles around the car to where he is standing.

Hyung-Chul....... Thanks for doing this today. The time was very productive.

Young-Mi.......... About tonight -- can I send you home?

They start walking toward the building entrance.

Hyung-Chul....... That's not necessary. I don't want to take up more of your personal time.

Young-Mi.......... Actually, there's more I wanted to discuss with ... Whoops!

She stumbles, falling into Hyung-Chul, reaching out desperately for support.

Reacting quickly, he catches hold of Young-Mi before she can drop to the pavement.

While Young-Mi recovers her bearings, Hyung-Chul carefully helps her to stand upright on both feet again.

Hyung-Chul....... What happened?

Young-Mi.......... I think my heel caught in a crack, and twisted my ankle ... It hurts.

Hyung-Chul....... Can you walk?

Young-Mi.......... I ... I'll try.

She takes a step.

Young-Mi.......... Oww! ... I'm not sure.

Hyung-Chul....... Let me take a look.

He gets down on one knee in front of Young-Mi.

Hyung-Chul....... Hold on to me and lift your foot.

Young-Mi.......... Okay.

Young-Mi steadies herself with a hand on his shoulder as she raises her foot.

Grasping her shoe and leg, Hyung-Chul gently rotates the ankle.

Young-Mi.......... Oww!

Hyung-Chul....... There's no bruise or swelling, so it can't be too serious. Still, check in with medical.

Young-Mi.......... Yes.

He puts her foot down, and stands up.

Hyung-Chul....... Come on, I'll walk you inside.

Young-Mi.......... Thank you.

Hyung-Chul puts his arm around Young-Mi's shoulder to support her.

They walk slowly, Young-Mi leaning her weight against Hyung-Chul and favoring her 'sore' foot.

Hyung-Chul....... Better?

Young-Mi.......... Yes, thanks to you.

Hyung-Chul....... Now, what were you about to say?

Young-Mi.......... Oh ... I have more to discuss about the show, if you have the time later.

Hyung-Chul....... You're really working too hard, Young-Mi.

Young-Mi.......... It's nothing. To beat Director Kim, I'll do everything I can to help.

He sighs at his inability to dissuade her, finally yielding ...

Hyung-Chul....... Okay, but let's talk over dinner. You choose the place.

She nods, lowering here eyes coyly as she smiles, her purpose achieved.

Young-Mi.......... (self-effacingly) Oh, I couldn't presume.

Hyung-Chul....... Go on. What do you like?

Young-Mi.......... Hmm ... Someplace quiet, conducive to talking. Like where we had lunch that day by the river.

He considers her suggestion for a moment ...

Hyung-Chul....... That's a long drive from the office, and out of the way. How about ON River Station instead?

....................... It's closer, the food's good, and the ambiance is relaxing.

Young-Mi.......... Are you sure? I heard it's where couples date to celebrate special occasions.

He shrugs.

Hyung-Chul....... I don't know about that. Just consider it a well-deserved reward for your dedication.

Young-Mi.......... Thank you, Director.

Hyung-Chul....... Shall we meet here tonight, at the door?

Young-Mi.......... I'll come to your office after I finish the news. That way, you won't have to wait for me.

SCENE: MBS office building rooftop, morning

From the rooftop, Sun-Mi has seen and heard everything happening below in the car park.

And what she's witnessed has left her furious.

Sun-Mi.............. Why are men such dupes!? As if Young-Mi really twisted her ankle!

Angrily she crushes the empty vending cup in her hand.

But she addresses the brunt of her ire at Hyung-Chul ...

Sun-Mi.............. What do you mean, you "don't know about that"? ... Have you forgotten my birthday already?

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 13 ]

Hyung-Chul. After 1 year, 2 years, 10 years, 20 years, I want to be there for your birthdays ...

Sun-Mi.............. Those words -- did you mean them? Or was it all for show, to impress me?

FLASHBACK [ Scene from Episode 13 ]

Hyung-Chul. If you give it to your sweet-heart, the two of you can meet in the next life ...

Sun-Mi.............. Director Yoon, which is the real you?

But the answer remains elusive, and Sun-Mi drops the effort with a frustrated sigh.

Sun-Mi.............. Still, what difference does it make? I'm the one who broke up.

....................... It's only natural that he'd try to forget, because then I can be nothing to him ...

To Be Continued ...
