Sun-Mi is back at the canteen, standing at the windows, tears of frustration in her eyes as she stares off into nothing.
She glances up and to the side momentarily, toward the rooftop where she had just left Hyung-Chul...
Sun-Mi.............. So irritating! Why does he have to be so obnoxious!
But after she considers for a moment, she also berates herself...
Sun-Mi.............. But why did I have to say THAT to him? Why egg him on? Can't I just hold my tongue for once? ... Idiot!
She hears footsteps approaching behind her, and quickly wipes the tears away.
Jin-Soo............. (jovially) Jin Sun-Mi, there you are! Didn't you get the text for the meeting?
Sun-Mi.............. No. My phone was off.
She takes out her cell phone, turns it on, and checks her messages.
Jin-Soo watches Sun-Mi closely, and sees that her eyes are red and damp.
Jin-Soo............. You were crying. What's wrong?
Sun-Mi.............. It's... nothing.
Jin-Soo............. Since you're a woman, that means it's really something, right?
Sun-Mi.............. (smiles slightly) Actually... Er... What is the meeting about?
Jin-Soo............. Team Leader Kim is announcing the anchors for the new morning show. I bet 25,000 won on you for Main anchor.
Sun-Mi.............. (astonished) You what?
Jin-Soo............. Since this is Director Yoon's pet project, I know for sure that you'll get it.
Sun-Mi.............. Why should it make any difference whose project it is?
Jin-Soo gives her a baffled look.
Jin-Soo............. But the rumor is that Director Yoon broke off his engagement because you and...
He pauses when he sees the stern expression darkening Sun-Mi�s face.
Sun-Mi.............. (irritated) Please! Stop spreading idle rumors! ... Come on, or we'll be late.
She strides off, stepping quickly. Jin-Soo has to hustle to catch up...

A FEW DAYS LATER...
Hyung-Chul is standing by Camera 2 in the News Center as the broadcast concludes.
Male Anchor...... And that�s the News for tonight...
Joo-Hee............ Thank you for watching. Please join us again tomorrow.
Joo-Hee and her co-anchor bow together for the audience.
The ON AIR light goes out.
PD................... (O.S. over the studio speakers) Everyone worked hard. Thank you.
Male Anchor...... (to Joo-Hee) You seemed unsettled again today. What�s going on?
Joo-Hee............ It�s nothing...
Then Joo-Hee sees Hyung-Chul and waves for him to wait as she removes her earpiece.
Joo-Hee............ (to the co-anchor) I�ll talk with you later...
She walks over to where Hyung-Chul waits by the studio doors.
Joo-Hee............ Why are you here?
Hyung-Chul....... Can�t I watch my ex-fianc�e give the News?
By the look in his eyes, Joo-Hee senses that he didn�t just stop to chat by chance.
Joo-Hee............ Let�s go together...
SCENE: Hyung-Chul�s club, night
Joo-Hee sits alone at a table in Hyung-Chul�s club, watching him playing the grand piano.
As he finishes the final measures of You�ve Got A Friend, scattered applause comes from around the room.
With a curt nod to acknowledge the audience�s favor, Hyung-Chul returns to Joo-Hee�s table.
Joo-Hee............ I �ve never heard you play that song before.
Hyung-Chul....... I learned it in England. I guess I just felt a little nostalgic tonight.
Joo-Hee sips her wine.
Joo-Hee............ Meaning... things aren�t going well with Sun-Mi?
Hyung-Chul....... Hah! ... Since that night at the boutique, she�s been avoiding me like the plague.
Joo-Hee............ Even after news of our �breakup� came out?
Hyung-Chul....... If anything now, it�s worse. I guess your little plot failed.
Joo-Hee............ (smiles) No... That's good!
Hyung-Chul....... What do you mean, good? At least before, we had a civil relationship. Now... nothing!
Joo-Hee takes another sip of wine, before she answers...
Joo-Hee............ When are you going to understand women?
Hyung-Chul....... (grumbling) I gave that up a long time ago...
Joo-Hee............ Think of it like this: If a woman has nothing to say, maybe its because she has more to say than she can express.
....................... And when she does say one thing, she could mean something entirely the opposite of what she said.
....................... As long as her mind is uncertain, be certain she hasn't given up on you...
Hyung-Chul....... (scoffs) How can you know that for sure about Sun-Mi?
Joo-Hee............ Because it�s not about Sun-Mi, it�s about me... And I�d suppose as women, we�re not that different.
Hyung-Chul picks up his whiskey glass and takes a long swallow.
Hyung-Chul....... Sun-Mi is hardly you; she has a tenacity, an inner strength of conviction that you don�t.
....................... It�s black or white, right or wrong, there�s no gray in-betweens that compromise her.
....................... When Sun-Mi�s mind is made up, she's made it very clear nothing is going to change...
He throws down the remaining whiskey in a single gulp, then slams the empty glass down on the table.
Hyung-Chul....... (bitterly) So maybe it�s time to give up, admit that it's over, accept that there's no more hope.
Joo-Hee watches him thoughtfully as she remembers...

She thinks for another moment, and then makes a decision...

Joo-Hee stands up and looks at Hyung-Chul expectantly. Grudgingly, he gets up, too.
Hyung-Chul....... Where are we going at this hour?
Joo-Hee............ You�ll find out. C�mon, I�m driving.
SCENE: Inside a church, night
Joo-Hee and Hyung-Chul walk into back of a Catholic church. The sanctuary is dimly lit and still. And empty, except for them.
Joo-Hee............ The last time we were here together, it was for your Mother�s funeral... five years ago.
Being in the church brings back unwelcome memories for Hyung-Chul... of that unhappy day...
Hyung-Chul....... But why come back? You know I gave up believing in God a long time ago.
Joo-Hee............ I thought you could benefit from a new perspective.
Hyung-Chul....... (skeptically) By going back to the past?
Joo-Hee............ Trust me, as an old friend from that past, okay?
Joo-Hee dips her fingers in the holy water font, makes the sign of the cross, and starts up the aisle.
She stops at a pew near the front, genuflects, and takes a seat. She motions for Hyung-Chul to join her.
Joo-Hee............ Before she fell ill, this pew was where your Mother always knelt to pray.
Hyung-Chul....... (sarcastically) God was just her way of coping with a bad reality she had no control over.
....................... I promised myself, that I�d never have such a hopeless love as hers.
Joo-Hee............ (chides humorously) So much for promises... But you once told me you�re not really sure what love is...
Hyung-Chul....... Yeah? So what?
She takes a small card from her wallet, and hands it to him.
Joo-Hee............ It�s a rememberance card from the funeral.
For a few moments, he studies his mother�s picture on the front, then turns the card over. A Scripture verse is printed on the back.
Joo-Hee............ It was her favorite: �Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres... Love never fails.�
....................... Your Mum always said, �If you really love someone, then you�ll never give up praying for them.�
Hyung-Chul....... (bitterly) A lot of good it did. In the end, God failed, love failed, all those years of prayer failed.
He holds the card out for Joo-Hee to take back, but she refuses.
Joo-Hee............ Keep it.
Hyung-Chul puts the card into the inner pocket of his suit coat.
Hyung-Chul....... (impatiently) I�ve had enough lecturing for one night, shall we go?
He is about to stand, but Joo-Hee places her hand on his arm.
Joo-Hee............ First, I have one more thing to say.
Hyung-Chul....... (exasperated) What?
Joo-Hee............ Your mother didn�t come to pray for her marriage � she had no illusions about that. She came to pray for her son.
....................... For a stubborn, willful youth who�d made up his mind about everything, black or white, good or bad...
....................... This is where your Mother found the strength to keep hope alive.... To her last day, she never gave up on you.
Joo-Hee stands up.
Joo-Hee............ Tell me, honestly, were her prayers answered?
....................... If the answer is �No�, then prove yourself right, and give up on your failed love, too.
....................... But if the answer is 'Yes�, then learn from your Mother, and prove yourself to be the man she hoped you'd become.
Hyung-Chul....... That isn�t...
Joo-Hee raises her hand before he can say more...
Joo-Hee............ Think about it awhile, before you answer... No hurry; I�ll be waiting in the car...
She leaves the pew by the side aisle, and walks back toward the exit.
Hyung-Chul listens to Joo-Hee�s footsteps receding on the tile floor; then hears the door open and close.
Alone with his thoughts in the dim stillness, images come back from memories he'd kept buried...

FLASHBACK [From Episode 1 � Hyung-Chul�s mother�s funeral]

Hyung-Chul....... (aloud, to himself, dismissively) This is useless...
He stands to leave, but hears Joo-Hee�s words again:
Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) This is where your Mother found the strength to keep hope alive... To her last day, she never gave up...
He takes the card from his pocket and looks at his mother�s picture on the card.
Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) Were her prayers answered?... if the answer is �Yes�, then learn from your Mother...
Hyung-Chul hesitates, torn about what to do. His mind tells him one thing, but his heart knows another...
Grasping the card tightly, he kneels in the pew, and raises his eyes above the altar, to the backlit, stained glass window...
Shining into the darkness are the cross, and the white dove above it. Ancient symbols of Faith, Hope... and Enduring Love...
Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) If you really love someone, then you�ll never give up...
SCENE: Hyung-Chul's office, morning
THE NEXT DAY...
Hyung-Chul is working at his desk, when he stops and puts down his pen.
He looks at the Peter Rabbit music box on his desk, a gift from Sun-Mi when they were together in England.
Hyung-Chul....... (aloud, to himself) Thank you, Mother, for sending an angel to rescue me... and giving me your example.
He recalls the image that came to his mind the previous night, almost like a vision of what could be, if he kept hope alive...
He opens one of the desk drawers and takes out a video cassette that he'd started, but never finished. He places it on his desk.
Hyung-Chul....... I know what to do now, Mother. But I'll need your prayers now, too, more than ever. May God help me...
SCENE: MBS TV studio, morning
The camera pans across the studio set of Eve�s Morning, showing each member of the announcer team as Hyung-Chul�s voiceover describes that person�s area of focus.
Hyung-Chul....... (voiceover) The main announcers for Eve�s Morning are Kim Sun-Dal and Huh Young-Mi.

After Eve's Morning, Sun-Mi is back at her desk in the Announcer's office, going through a ratings report.
Jin-Soo notices her deepening frown as she reads.
Jin-Soo............. Why the long face?
Sun-Mi.............. (plaintively) My ratings are down again, for the second week.
Young-Mi smiles as she looks up from her computer.
Young-Mi.......... (smugly) I told you so, it was too good to last. People know a cheap gimmick when they see one.
Kyung-Hee looks up, eyes narrowed as she shoots a disapproving glance to Young-Mi.
Kyung-Hee........ Huh Young-Mi! Watch your tongue!
Joo-Hee stands up at her desk to get everyone's attention as she joins into the fray.
Joo-Hee............ Young-Mi is right. It doesn't take long for the novelty to wear off. That's when the hard work starts.
Sun-Mi lowers her head, feeling pecked on from both sides.
Sun-Mi.............. (meekly) Senior, I'll try to work harder...
Joo-Hee............ Don't misunderstand, Sun-Mi, I'm not criticizing you. You gambled on an idea and had some success.
....................... But you can't sit on it; you have to continually give your audience new reasons to keep coming back.
Sun-Mi is irritated at being lectured over something so fundamanetal.
Sun-Mi.............. (tersely) Yes, I got it...
Joo-Hee............ Just keep working harder, maybe you can do better and turn things around.
Sun-Dal speaks up from the doorway, where he had been listening.
Sun-Dal............ That's a good lesson for everyone. Because after Eve's Morning's debut, we have quite the success to maintain!
Jin-Soo............. (surprised) Does that mean...?
Sun-Dal............ Yes. We topped the ratings with 25% today, thanks to all your hard work. Congratulations!
Everyone stands and applauds the success...
Sun-Dal............ Director Yoon has called for a celebration, tonight at his new villa.
Jin-Soo............. (shaking his fist in appreciation) Yes! A party! ... Woo-hoo!
Ki-Jong............. (complaining) Everyone else gets to party, while I have a game to announce...
Sun-Dal............ You�ll have to find a substitute, Ki-Jong... and that's for the rest of you, too... attendance is mandatory...
Sun-Dal had looked around the room as he spoke, but Sun-Mi feels he'd focused directly on her.

Sun-Mi frowns unhappily. Now she has no way to avoid Hyung-Chul, for an entire evening...

Sun-Mi and Cho-Jeh are in the MBS employee cafeteria, eating lunch.
Sun-Mi.............. (jokingly) Thanks for treating me lunch for once. What happened?
Cho-Jeh............ Since I'm suddenly 25,000 won richer, that's why.
Sun-Mi.............. (laughs) You mean it was you who bet against me with Jin-Soo?
Cho-Jeh............ (laughs) That idiot listens to any rumor that's floating about!
Her expression turns serious...
Cho-Jeh............ But you're not letting this discourage you, right? You're not giving up?
Sun-Mi.............. You mean my job? Of course not! If the ratings are disappointing, I'll just have to work harder...
Cho-Jeh............ Are you completely dense? That's not I'm talking about.

On the other side of the planter behind Sun-Mi, Young-Mi is eating lunch alone, and listening with interest...

Cho-Jeh............ (excitedly) Jin-Soo told me that you're all going to Director Yoon's place to celebrate tonight.
Sun-Mi.............. Yes, but...
Cho-Jeh............ So it's the perfect opportunity!

Sun-Mi comes out of the MBS front entrance revolving doors, office tote in hand, moving at a good trot.
Voice................ (O.S. loudly) Hey! Jin Sun-Mi! ... Over here!
She stops in her tracks, looks back, and sees Woo-Jin waiting by his blue Kia. She waves.
Sun-Mi.............. (happily) Woo-Jin!
Woo-Jin............ Leaving work already?
Sun-Mi walks over to his car to talk.
Sun-Mi.............. I finished taping my program early. But, why are you here?
Woo-Jin............ Young-Mi asked me to drive her home first, but she just called. Says she'll meet me at the party later.
Sun-Mi.............. That's odd. I wonder what she's up to?
Woo-Jin............ (shrugs) It's hard to say. Anyway, where are you running off to in such a hurry?
Sun-Mi.............. (smiles shyly) I thought I'd go early, to help Director Yoon prepare food for the party.
Woo-Jin............ Great! So are you two getting back together now?
Sun-Mi looks away...
Sun-Mi.............. Well... I wouldn't say that. But I thought I'd do it, as a friend.
Woo-Jin............ Want a lift? I've nothing better to do right now.
Sun-Mi.............. (smiles) Thanks. Do you mind stopping first so I can buy some fruits?
He reaches for the driver's side door handle.
Woo-Jin............ Sure. Let's go.
They both get into his car and start to put on their seatbelts.
Sun-Mi.............. This is a nice coincidence. We haven�t had a chance to catch up for some time...
SCENE: Outside Hyung-Chul�s apartment door, night
Hyung-Chul is moving chairs from the kitchne to the living room, when his doorbell rings...
At the door, he finds Young-Mi waiting, with a grocery bag of fruit she'd bought for the party.
Hyung-Chul....... (puzzled) The party isn't for another hour.
Young-Mi.......... I know. But I thought you might need some help getting things ready.
Hyung-Chul looks her her dubiously.
Young-Mi.......... (smiles) May I come in?
SCENE: Inside Woo-Jin�s car, night
Woo-Jin is driving his car, with Sun-Mi in the passenger seat. She appears shocked by something he just said.
Sun-Mi.............. (incredulous) You�re planning to quit Eve�s Morning?
Woo-Jin............ (testily) I belong behind the camera, not in front of it!
Sun-Mi.............. But everyone is awkward at first. You�ll do better next time.
Woo-Jin............ There won�t be a next time. I don�t know what Director Yoon was thinking; I felt like a fool.
Sun-Mi.............. While I'm preparing the food, why not speak to him about it?
Woo-Jin............ (nods, reluctantly) All right, we�ll see what happens.
SCENE: Outside Hyung-Chul�s apartment door, night
Sun-Mi and Woo-Jin are standing outside Hyung-Chul�s door. Sun-Mi fidgets apprehensively as she waits.
She has the bag of fruit she�d bought for the party in one hand; her office tote is in the other.
He presses the doorbell. The muffled chime sounds through the closed metal door.
Woo-Jin notices the pensive expression on her face.
Woo-Jin............ Is something wrong?
He puts a reassuring arm around her shoulders and feels the tension in her body.
Woo-Jin............ You�re nervous.
She turns and smiles up at him...
Sun-Mi.............. It�s okay, I�m fine. Don�t be con...
The door opens and Hyung-Chul appears, surprised to see them...
Hyung-Chul....... Oh, Jin Sun-Mi...?
Immediately his eyes go to Woo-Jin�s hand on Sun-Mi�s shoulder.
Sun-Mi sees the reaction on Hyung-Chul�s face and self-consciously glances up at Woo-Jin.
Woo-Jin quickly takes his hand off her shoulder and looks away awkwardly.
Sun-Mi lowers her eyes and dips her head politely in greeting.
Sun-Mi.............. Senior...
Hyung-Chul....... You�re early...
She looks up and smiles warmly, moving her shopping bag forward so he�ll notice it.
Sun-Mi.............. I came to help prepare for the party. I hope I�m not imposing.
Hyung-Chul shakes his head and looks at her with a grin...
Hyung-Chul....... It seems everyone has that idea today...
Sun-Mi is puzzled by his words, until...
Young-Mi steps up next to Hyung-Chul. From the annoyed expression on her face, it is clear she has seen everything.
Sun-Mi is instantly jealous that once again she was aced out by her rival, as a troubling thought enters her mind:
Why is it every time she comes to Hyung-Chul�s house, he just happens to be with another woman?
Young-Mi.......... (acidly) Kim Woo-Jin! How is it you�re with Sun-Mi, again? Are you two joined at the hip or something?
Sun-Mi looks at Woo-Jin to offer an explanation, worried that Hyung-Chul might be thinking the same thing, too.
Woo-Jin is upset to find out Young-Mi had stood him up to be with Hyung-Chul, but he keeps his voice civil...
Woo-Jin............ I just gave Sun-Mi a lift. That�s all.
But Young-Mi isn�t satisfied by the explanation, replying in a hurt tone...
Young-Mi.......... If you really prefer to be with Sun-Mi, then make her your girlfriend! I won�t stand in your way!
Woo-Jin............ (exasperated) Young-Mi... it�s not what...
Young-Mi shakes her head, refusing to listen. Looking distressed, she turns her back in a huff and stomps off into the apartment.
Hyung-Chul, watching Young-Mi go back, recalls her similar reaction to seeing Woo-Jin embracing Sun-Mi in the classroom.
The situation also bothers him, how � despite all her protests to the contrary � Sun-Mi seems overly close to Woo-Jin.
The sympathetic expression on Hyung-Chul�s face bothers Sun-Mi as much as Young-Mi�s obviously contrived theatrics.
Sun-Mi sees right through Young-Mi�s falsely aggrieved act, and is irked why Hyung-Chul seems completely oblivious to it.
Sun-Mi.............. (snappishly) Director Yoon, if we're interrupting 'something'� we can come back later!
Hyung-Chul, feeling the heat in Sun-Mi�s manner toward him, tries to cool off the situation...
Hyung-Chul....... I�m sure she misunderstood. Why don't you both come in?
Sun-Mi immediately steps forward, but Woo-Jin hesitates.
Woo-Jin............ Director, may I have a word with you, in private?
Hyung-Chul glances first at Sun-Mi, then nods his head to Woo-Jin, and steps aside to let Sun-Mi enter.
SCENE: Yoon family living room, night
Director Kim Eun-Ki is visiting his sister, Eun-Ok, in her home's richly furnished living room.
A servant enters, carrying a silver tea tray, fills two white porcelain cups, bows, and exits without speaking a word.
From his leather upholstered chair, Eun-Ki leans forward and picks up his cup. Across the coffee table Eun-Ok looks disdainfully at him.
Eun-Ok............. Idiot!... Yoon Hyung-Chul made a complete fool of you, with that sham engagement to Yoo Joo-Hee.
Eun-Ki.............. I admit, I never considered the possibility.
Eun-Ok............. You have to move fast before the Board is in his pocket, or he'll be in the CEO's office, and you'll be on the street!
Eun-Ki.............. You don't need to remind me! I'm going to beat him at his own game -- fight program with program ...
Eun-Ok............. But Hyung-Chul controls the Announcers. Do you think he'll just let you have your pick of the top talent?
Eun-Ki.............. (confidently) No. I plan to go around him, by making a direct offer...
Eun-Ok............. Who do you have in mind?
Eun-Ki.............. Announcer Huh Young-Mi. As the main anchor for Eve's Morning, it would be quite a coup to steal her.
Eun-Ok............. (scoffing) Huh Young-Mi? Then you'd be making a big mistake...
SCENE: Hyung-Chul�s kitchen, night
Young-Mi and Sun-Mi are working in Hyung-Chul�s kitchen, preparing their fruit plates on opposite ends of the kitchen table.
Young-Mi glowers angrily as she works, upset that Sun-Mi has intervened in her plans.
Sun-Mi likewise glares at Young-Mi, unhappy that Young-Mi has preempted her attempts with Hyung-Chul... again.
Preparing to cross verbal swords, neither is in the mood to give quarter to her rival...
Young-Mi.......... (sarcastically) You look pale; why not take a rest? I don't need your help.
Sun-Mi.............. (testily) Oh? Afraid I�ll put you to shame?
Young-Mi responds by slicing where Sun-Mi is most sensitive...
Young-Mi.......... Jin Sun-Mi, your skills are no match for mine, even in the kitchen... your father, and Woo-Jin, both agreed to that.
Sun-Mi clenches her jaw, and retaliates by poking back at Young-Mi�s sore spot...
Sun-Mi.............. That's only because they were pitying you, since whatever you do leaves a bad taste in everyone�s mouths.
Young-Mi�s face darkens. She raises her voice threateningly... and her knife...
Young-Mi.......... Better watch your back, Jin Sun-Mi. Someone might stick something into it...!!!
Sun-Mi�s eyes harden, unwilling to let this challenge go unanswered...
Sun-Mi.............. And you, Huh Young-Mi? You�d better watch your own back, too...!!!
The two women clench their cutting knives tightly, eyes locked in a stare-down contest...
Seconds tick off slowly as the tension inexorably rises... the situation teetering on the cusp of an all-out m�l�e...
