Act 2

SCENE: Parking lot outside Hyung-Chul's villa, night

Hyung-Chul watches as Sun-Mi walks off through the gate, considering what he should do.

He recalls what she'd just said... the apparently finality of her words...

FLASHBACK  [Previous scene]

Sun-Mi.............. Let's not dwell on the past anymore, and move on...

Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) If you really love someone, then you'll never give up...

A determined look comes over Hyung-Chul's face. He starts off after Sun-Mi...

SCENE: Street outside Hyung-Chul's villa, night

Hyung-Chul follows Sun-Mi out the gate to the sidewalk, and watches her walk toward the curb.

Hyung-Chul....... (calling) Jin Sun-Mi!

Sun-Mi stops and turns to look back at Hyung-Chul.

He walks up to her.

Hyung-Chul....... Why are you going alone? I'll drive you.

Hyung-Chul puts his hand on Sun-Mis shoulder and tries to turn her back toward the gate, but she resists.

Sun-Mi.............. (curtly) I'm fine.

Hyung-Chul....... This young lady doesn't listen...

Sun-Mi looks at him unbelievingly ... this is hardly the "professional" level of interaction she'd agreed on maintaining with him.

Hyung-Chul....... It'll be tiring to live with her.

Sun-Mi.............. (snaps) What did you say?!

Undeterred by her ire, Hyung-Chul takes the videotape cassette from his back pocket and holds it out for Sun-Mi.

Sun-Mi looks at the tape, then up at Hyung-Chul, dubiously ... hadn't she just made it clear she didn't want any more personal gifts?

Hyung-Chul....... I thought this might help you. Watch it when you have time. It's a resource tape.

Explained that way, she can't refuse it. He is still her boss, after all...

Sun-Mi.............. (cordially) Thank you...

She takes the tape from his hand, then decides she has to end the conversation, before he breaks odwn her resistance.

Sun-Mi.............. I'll go now...

Hyung-Chul....... You really don't need a ride?

This guy really doesn't know how to take "no" for an answer, she thinks, smiling at his persistance as she nods her rebuff.

Turning away, she sees a taxi coming, and runs towards it.

Sun-Mi.............. (calling) Taxi!

Hyung-Chul watches as Sun-Mi gets in, and the cab drives off.

After Sun-Mi is gone, he smiles to himself, happy she at least was willing to take the tape.

SCENE: In the taxi, night

Sun-Mi closes the cab door and settles into the back seat.

Sun-Mi.............. (to the driver) Sir, take me to MBS Studios in Yeouido.

The driver looks at Sun-Mi in the rearview mirror.

Driver............... Okay.

Hyung-Chul is waiting on the sidewalk, watching her off. He waves as the car passes, but she pretends not to notice.

Already her thoughts are going back to what happened at the party and afterward...

FLASHBACK  [Scene from the party that night]

Sun-Mi.............. (quietly to herself) It's only because of Woo-Jin...

She looks at the video tape cassette that Hyung-Chul gave to her.

Sun-Mi.............. (quietly to herself) Things are strictly professional between us... now...

Driver............... Huh?

Sun-Mi ............. (sheepishly) Oh... nothing...

Sun-Mi is about to move the cassette into her bag, when her cell phone buzzes. She takes it out and sees Cho-Jeh is calling.

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, Cho-Jeh? ... Choi Jin-Soo said what? ... Okay, I'll be there. Bye...

Sun-Mi closes her phone.

Sun-Mi.............. Sir? Could you take me to Yeongdeungpo, instead?

Driver............... Yeongdeungpo? Sure...

SCENE: In Woo-Jin's car, night

Woo-Jin and Young-Mi are driving back from the party. Both appear unhappy.

Woo-Jin............ Why did you say that earlier...?

Young-Mi and Woo-Jin look at each other.

Woo-Jin............ (continuing) About Sun-Mi. She's already upset.

Young-Mi.......... I was just trying to cheer her up. And it's true that Sun-Mi's lucky.

Woo-Jin............ Depending on your mood, hearing that you're lucky can make you feel bad.

Young-Mi.......... (smiles) Really? Then that's too bad.

Woo-Jin looks at Young-Mi, disgusted at her attitude.

INTERCUT SCENES: In Hyung-Chul's apartment / Announcer 1 Team office, night

Hyung-Chul is just coming into his apartment as the phone rings. He sits down on the couch to answer the call.

Hyung-Chul....... Hello?

Joo-Hee is at her desk in the Announcer 1 Team office.

Joo-Hee............ It's me... Can you talk?

Huyng-Chul....... Now? Sure. The party just ended. What is it?

Joo-Hee............ Director Kim called and basically laid down the line... the fallout from our broken "engagement".

....................... He thinks that my "brand" is permamently damaged, and "suggested" I start looking for another position.

Hyung-Chul....... As Operations Director, Kim holds some strong cards, but I'll try to intervene.

Joo-Hee............ (sighs) That's not necessary. I took the risk, I'll take the consequences, too.

Hyung-Chul....... Maybe there's another option. Let me make some calls.

Joo-Hee............ Thanks. What do you have in mind?

Hyung-Chul....... Before I returned from England, I met with the Bureau Director. How about a correspondent post in London?

Joo-Hee............ You mean, run away?

Hyung-Chul....... Think of it like this: Since there's so few sunny days in London, even if you cry you don't look bad.

Joo-Hee............ Am I that obvious?

Hyung-Chul....... Don't you know? You wear your heart on your sleeve... So, what do you say?

Joo-Hee............ (laughs) Do I have another choice?

Hyung-Chul....... Well... I do know this guy...

Joo-Hee............ Forget it! I'm not ready to have my heart broken again.

Hyung-Chul....... Just asking...

Joo-Hee............ No offense taken.

Hyung-Chul....... Did Director Kim say anything about who he wants to replace you?

Joo-Hee............ Funny you would ask that. Yes, he did.

Hyung-Chul....... Who?

Joo-Hee............ Jin Sun-Mi...

Hyung-Chul....... Sun-Mi? But he was behind the scandal that would have got her fired...

Joo-Hee............ I know. That's what surprised me, too.

Hyung-Chul....... What do you think?

Joo-Hee doesn't answer right away, and when she does, her voice is subdued...

Joo-Hee............ It's ironic, isn't it? The same woman to whom I gave the man I love, I may also be giving the job I love...

Hyung-Chul....... I'm sorry things turned out like this.

Joo-Hee............ (resolutely) I'll only be sorry if you don't get serious, and get back together with Sun-Mi. Any progress?

FLASHBACK  [After the party earlier that night]

Hyung-Chul....... I thought this might help you. Watch it when you have time. It's a resource tape...

Hyung-Chul....... I did what I could.  As for the rest, well... I took your advice, and left it up to better hands...

SCENE: Inside a coffee shop, night

Sun-Mi and Cho-Jeh meet up at a small coffee shop...

Cho-Jeh............ (incredulous) So everything Choi Jin-Soo told me is true? That Young-Mi is flirting with Director Yoon?

Sun-Mi.............. Yes, and right in front of Woo-Jin! I was so upset!

Cho-Jeh............ (wondering) You weren't upset for yourself?

Sun-Mi.............. Why? Senior can like whomever he chooses. It's not as if we have a close personal relationship any more.

Cho-Jeh is surprised to hear this...

Cho-Jeh............ I thought you went there early to try to salvage things betweeen you. What do you mean, "not any more"?

Sun-Mi looks away.

Sun-Mi.............. We... agreed to keep our relationship strictly professional from now on, as work colleagues.

Cho-Jeh............ (doubtfully) That's not what I'm sensing. You don't have regrets about breaking up?

Sun-Mi looks back and smiles.

Sun-Mi.............. Cho-Jeh, you're always writing novels. Senior and I were never more than "good friends". We didn't break up.

Cho-Jeh............ Right. And Director Yoon didn't buy that dress for you, or introduce you to his father in front of everybody, or...

Not happy about the direction the conversation is going, Sun-Mi idly glances at her watch, and is surprised at the time.

Sun-Mi.............. (curtly) I need to go.

She immediately stands up and collects her bag.

Cho-Jeh............ Already?

Sun-Mi.............. I have some things to do in the office tonight... I'll see you later.

Sun-Mi hurries off, while Cho-Jeh watches, shaking her head.

Cho-Jeh............ (grumbling to herself) Writing novels, am I? This is looking more like a tragedy...

SCENE: In the Announcer 1 Team office

After talking with Hyung-Chul, Joo-Hee is still at her desk, staring at her reflection in the dark window.

Sun-Mi comes to the door. She sees Joo-Hee and hesitates, wondering whether to go in.

Hearing someone, Joo-Hee turns to look.

Joo-Hee............ Sun-Mi? You came back from the party?

Sun-Mi walks over to her desk and plops her bag down.

Sun-Mi.............. (aloofly) I have some things to finish up.

Joo-Hee............ It's quite late. Don't you think you're working too hard?

Sun-Mi.............. (icily) That depends on who's asking the question.

Joo-Hee takes a few moments to reflect before responding.

Joo-Hee............ Okay, I understand I'm not a person you really want to talk with. But that's my fault; I owe you an apology.

Joo-Hee's unexpected remorse gives Sun-Mi pause, and in return she drops her cold indifference.

Sun-Mi.............. For what, Senior?

Joo-Hee............ Being unprofessional towards you. Actually, to be frank, for being a real bitch at times...

Having Joo-Hee speak so openly is unsettling to Sun-Mi...

Sun-Mi.............. This isn't necessary...

Joo-Hee............ But it is. Because it's the truth. Because I was jealous.

Sun-Mi.............. You've nothing to be jealous of... Director Yoon and I no longer have anything to do with each other.

Joo-Hee............ (smiles) I see Hyung-Chul is right, you're certainly a stubborn one...

Sun-Mi.............. (unhappily) What now?  Is he spreading rumors about my character, too?

Joo-Hee gets up from her chair and grabs her shoulder bag. She walks over to Sun-Mi, stopping by her desk.

Joo-Hee............ (firmly) Look, I know it's not my place to intervene, but let me correct one thing for you, okay?

Sun-Mi, aware that she has spoken ill about a Director to her supervisor, stands up, expecting a scolding...

Sun-Mi.............. (meekily, lowering her eyes) Senior. I was wrong to speak like this...

Joo-Hee............ (warmly) I'm not asking you feel sorry, but to pay attention...

Sun-Mi is surprised at her tone, and looks up at Joo-Hee, wondering what is so important her supervisor would speak like this.

Joo-Hee............ You need to know... Hyung-Chul has never treated me other than as a close friend.

Sun-Mi.............. (scoffing) Really? Then why was he going to marry you?

Joo-Hee............ But he wasn't. The whole engagement thing was a sham, to divert attention from the scandal.

Sun-Mi.............. (unbelieving) Senior is not that kind of person! He'd never treat a serious matter so lightly, just for his own benefit!

Joo-Hee ........... That's right. It was all my idea. I did it to protect him, but he only wanted to protect you.

....................... He took on public humiliation for a failed engagement. Because you're the one close to his heart.

Sun-Mi is still incredulous...

Sun-Mi.............. No, you're wrong. It's only because he wants me to become a celebrity, to benefit the Company's bottom line!

Joo-Hee............ Tsst!!! ... Do you really believe that? Or are you just saying it, to justify yourself?

Sun-Mi averts her eyes, and tries to redirect the conversation...

Sun-Mi.............. I know you still love him dearly...

Joo-Hee shows a half smile, and nods...

Joo-Hee............ True; I hoped that with the engagement, he might be persuaded to come to me.

Sun-Mi.............. Then why tell me this? Why help me to take him from you, instead of trying to get him back?

Joo-Hee places her hand on Sun-Mi's arm to get her full attention.

Joo-Hee............ Listen. What I'm about to say, is not as your Senior, but as a woman who loves, and hurts, like you...

She looks at Sun-Mi openly, hoping to convey her sincerely.

Joo-Hee............ Love isn't a matter of possession, of who gets or takes ... Love is a matter of giving...

....................... I chose to give my heart to Hyung-Chul, but instead of me, he chose to give his heart to you...

She pauses, to let her words sink in...

Joo-Hee............ The only question remaining is, who will you give your heart to?

Sun-Mi.............. (exasperated) Senior... None of this makes sense when I think about it...

Joo-Hee............ Try listening to your heart, not your mind... consider seriously what you have done... what you can still do...

....................... Hyung-Chul holds only one person close to his heart, and that person is you

Sun-Mi doesn't answer. She is staring at the floor, trying to sort it all out in her head.

Joo-Hee............ I'm going first.

Joo- Hee walks out, leaving Sun-Mi alone with her thoughts. She sits down at her desk, to ponder what Joo-Hee had told her.

Sun-Mi.............. (aloud, to herself) Is it really possible...?

Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) Consider it seriously... what you have done...

Sun-Mi thinks back to what had happened in the past months...

Sun-Mi.............. No need. I can go back by myself. Drive carefully, Director Yoon.

Sun-Mi.............. Did I make these circumstances? Didn't I ask you to leave me alone?

FLASHBACK  [Scene from Episode 12A, after Sun-Mi and Hyung-Chul argue on the rooftop]

Sun-Mi.............. If that is how you feel, then... Goodbye, Director Yoon...

FLASHBACK  [After the party earlier that night]

Sun-Mi.............. Let's keep things strictly professional between us... not dwell on the past, and move on... That will be best...

Joo-Hee............ (voiceover) Hyung-Chul... gave his heart to you...The only question remaining is, who will you give your heart to?

Regret hits Sun-Mi as she finally grasps the truth, and the realization that it came too late... She can't go back, and undo the past.

Sun-Mi.............. (aloud, to herself) Senior... what have I done?
