Act 3

SCENE: Outside Young-Mi’s apartment, night

Woo-Jin’s car slows, then stops outside Young-Mi’s apartment building.

Young-Mi immediately unbuckles her seat belt, as he turns off the engine and headlights.

Woo-Jin............ We’re here.

He starts to take off his seatbelt, but Young-Mi speaks up...

Young-Mi.......... Don’t come in, I’m tired.

He turns to look at her.

Woo-Jin............ Then I have something to say here... Your behavior tonight, with Director Yoon... stop it!

Young-Mi dismisses his demand with a roll of her eyes...

Young-Mi.......... You know I have to maintain a good working relationship; Director Yoon controls my future.

Woo-Jin............ Does that ‘relationship’ require such blatant flirting?

Young-Mi.......... What you call 'flirting' is only showing respect for his position. In my job, I have to cater to rich and powerful men.

....................... The further a woman moves up, the more is required. Your incessant jealousy is becoming a burden to my future.

Woo-Jin............ (exasperated) You’re saying that I’m holding you back? What do you want from me?

Young-Mi.......... A more open attitude, for one.

Woo-Jin............ You mean, you want to play the field! Start dating someone else, like Director Yoon?

Young-Mi.......... What I mean is, I don’t want to feel I have to hold back when another man shows an interest.

....................... Why should I limit myself now, especially if we don’t have a future together?

When he hears this, Woo-Jin is shocked.

Woo-Jin............ Since when don’t we have a future?

Young-Mi.......... It’s been five years; we’re different people now. We need to seriously reconsider if we still have anything in common.

....................... (smirks) I’m going to be the top announcer at MBS, and you’re just a cameraman. What do you think?

He looks away, not knowing how to respond.

Young-Mi.......... (curtly) We've talked enough.

She opens the door and gets out of the car, but looks back before she closes the door.

Young-Mi.......... From now on, I’ll call if I want to see you. Goodbye.

Woo-Jin............ (angrily) Huh Young-Mi!

Young-Mi coolly ignores Woo-Jin’s temper, shoves the car door closed without another word, and aloofly walks away

.

Woo-Jin watches her until she goes into the building. Frustrated, he hits the steering wheel with his fist.

SCENE: Inside Hyung-Chul’s apartment, morning

The next morning, Hyung-Chul is asleep in bed when a ringing phone awakens him.

Half asleep, with eyes closed, he fumbles for his cell phone. Finally locating it, he answers the call.

Hyung-Chul....... Hello?

When no one answers, and the ringing continues, he stares incomprehensively at the phone in his hand.

Belatedly, he realizes that the call is not to that phone. He gets up from bed and searches the apartment.

Finally he finds the ringing cell phone buried in the cushions of the sofa. He opens the phone to take the call.

Hyung-Chul....... Hello?

Just as he speaks, the caller hangs up. He looks at the Caller ID, and sees “7:33 Caller? Young-Mi 2000/5/28”.

Then he realizes that the phone belongs to Young-Mi; that she had forgotten it at his apartment.

SCENE: Inside Young-Mi’s apartment, morning

Young-Mi is making toast when the phone rings.

She lets it ring a few times, to make it appear that she is not waiting eagerly for the expected return call.

Young-Mi.......... (feigning surprise) Hello? Director Yoon? Yes... My cell phone?... Just a moment please...

Young-Mi holds the phone for the count of four while she ‘searches’ for her cell phone.

Young-Mi.......... I can’t find it anywhere. Thank you.

SCENE: Outside Hyung-Chul’s apartment, morning

When Young-Mi arrives by taxi at Hyung-Chul’s villa to collect her cell phone, he is waiting outside in the car parking lot.

She smiles warmly when she sees him, but he is indifferent, simply handing her the phone.

Hyung-Chul....... I could’ve dropped it off on my way. You didn’t have to come.

Young-Mi.......... Not at all. Are you going to the baseball game?

Hyung-Chul looks at Young-Mi, wondering what she intends by that.

Young-Mi.......... I’d like to go, too.

Hyung-Chul nods, turning her down is hardly polite...

SCENE: Inside the Catholic church, morning

After Sunday morning Mass, Joo-Hee lingers behind as the church empties out of parishioners.

A priest comes out of the sacristy and sees Joo-Hee alone in the pew. He walks over to speak to her.

Priest............... Announcer Yoo, I noticed lately, that you’ve been coming to church more often.

Joo-Hee............ (embarrassed) I know I haven't been the most regular...

Priest............... (smiles) I didn't say that to make you feel guilty. Is there something on your mind you’d like to discuss?

Joo-Hee............ Yes... Father, I took your advice and tried to make things right.

Priest............... And the outcome?

Joo-Hee............ It didn't seem to help much... and now I’m having regrets.

The priest nods with understanding.

Priest............... But wouldn’t they be more, if you hadn't done the right thing? God honors good deeds, even if we don’t see the fruit.

Joo-Hee............ (sighs deeply) Perhaps, but would my heart still ache as badly?

SCENE: Jam-Shil baseball stadium, morning

The stands of the Jam-shil Baseball Stadium are empty as the teams practice batting.

Announcer Huh Koo-Yun is in the broadcasting pressbox overlooking the field when Ki-Jong and Jin-Soo arrive to prep for the game.

Ki-Jong............. (calling to Koo-Yun) Good morning!

Koo-Yun stands to greet Ki-Jong.

Ki-Jong............. (turns to Koo-Yun) This is my subordinate. He’s my successor. I brought him out to train him.

Koo-Yun shakes hands with Jin-Soo. Jin-Soo bows politely in greeting.

Koo-Yun............ Delighted to meet you.

Jin-Soo............. Hello.

Ki-Jong............. But this isn’t easy work.

He looks at Jin-Soo, mischievously.

Ki-Jong............. Hey, do you wanna try today?

Jin-Soo stares back at Ki-Jong, astonished at being offered the opportunity.

Jin-Soo............. Me?

Koo-Yun............ Announcing baseball is the hardest of all sports.

Ki-Jong............. Of course. That’s why our station says I’m the only one who can do it.

Everyone laughs

Jin-Soo............. That’s why you haven’t been fired yet.

Koo-Yun chuckles.

Jin-Soo............. Sorry!

Ki-Jong............. (laughs) OK, when you’ve done with the exam, you give it a shot.

....................... You have to know that he’s the king of the broadcasting world.

....................... It’ll be hard at first. But the more you do it, the better you get. ...

Jin-Soo nods.

Ki-Jong............. Take a seat.

Koo-Yun............ Give it a shot.

Ki-Jong............. Jin-Soo. You have to do well. Here we go.

Jin-Soo puts on the headphones abd prepares to do the announcing.

Jin-Soo............. Hello, everyone. This is Jam-Shil baseball stadium. We’re here to watch DG and Superstar compete.

....................... More than 30,000 people in attendance. The weather is great. Huh Koo-Yun is here to help me with the game.

....................... (to Koo-Yun) Pleased to meet you.

Koo-Yun............ The pleasure is mine.

Jin-Soo............. DG and Superstars, these two teams are considered the dark horses for the championship.

....................... So far DG has three victories and no losses.

Koo-Yun is surprised at how good a job Jin-Soo is doing.

Jin-Soo............. It is said that Superstar is DG’s only obstacle to the championship this year.

Koo-Yun shakes his head with amazement.

Jin-Soo............. OK, we will now look at the player’s career stats.

Concerned that Jin-Soo might upstage him, Ki-Jong interrupts him...

Ki-Jong............. Come out. It’s OK. Move, move.

Ki-Jong pushes Jin-Soo out of the announcer’s chair.

Koo-Yun............ Why are you stopping him? ... He’s doing great.

Ki-Jong............. I should do it.

Ki-Jong sits down at the microphone.

Ki-Jong............. I’ll train him and take him out.

Koo-Yun............ He’s very good. I think he’ll be a great sportscaster.

Ki-Jong............. Oh, really?

Hyung-Chul enters the pressbox. Ki-Jong is surprised to see him.

Hyung-Chul....... Good morning.

Ki-Jong............. Oh, Mr. Director. Nice to see you.

Everyone then stands up.

Hyung-Chul....... It has been hard on you.

Ki-Jong............. (making introductions) Mr. Huh, this is the new Executive Director of MBS.

Koo-Yun............ Pleasure to meet you.

Hyung-Chul....... Keep up the good work. I’m here as promised.

Ki-Jong............. Thank you.

Young-Mi comes into the press box and stands by Hyung-Chul.

Young-Mi.......... Good morning.

Ki-Jong and Jin-Soo stare, surprised that Young-Mi is there with the Director. Together they look at Hyung-Chul, then at Young-Mi.

Young-Mi notices their surprise at seeing her.

Ki-Jong steps closer to Hyung-Chul to speak privately.

Ki-Jong............. (quietly) Mr. Director, there wasn’t a date involved in the promise.

Ki-Jong laughs and steps away, looks at Young-Mi, then laughs nervously again.

SCENE: Jam-Shil baseball stadium pressbox, afternoon

Ki-Jong and Koo-Yun are announcing the game.

Ki-Jong............. A clear hit passed third base. What pitch was that?

Koo-Yun............ A curve ball. It must have been hard ...

Cho-Jeh enters the pressbox and smiles when she sees Jin-Soo.

Koo-Yun............ (continues) for Jang Soo-Keun to hit it...

Cho-Jeh............ (whispering) Jin-Soo-ssi.

Jin-Soo doesn't notice her.

Koo-Yun............ (continues) This will be a great chance for the Superstars.

Ki-Jong............. Now the best hitter?

Koo-Yun............ Yes. DG better get ready for hits.

Cho-Jeh throws a wadded paper at Jin-Soo to get his attention. Jin-Soo looks up at Cho-Jeh.

Ki-Jong............. Superstars are sending out the next hitter...

Cho-Jeh waves at Jin-Soo and signals for him to come out with her. Jin-Soo nods and gets up from the chair.

Ki-Jong............. (continues) Jang Won-Keun. He’s recently had ...

SCENE: Jam-Shil baseball stadium, afternoon

In the stadium, an excited crowd supports their favorite team, as cheerleaders lead the fans in a chant...

Jin-Soo and Cho-Jeh sit together in the stands. They look over and see Hyung-Chul and Young-Mi sitting together in another section.

Young-Mi is holding Hyung-Chul’s hand.

Cho-Jeh stares, astonished, then looks back at Jin-Soo.

INTERCUT SCENES: Sun-Mi’s bedroom / Cho-Jeh's home, afternoon

Later that afternoon...

Sun-Mi is curled up on the living room couch, reading Burying My Face In Tears, a poetry volume by Korean poet Won Tae Yeon.

The phone on the coffee table rings. She puts down the book to answer it.

Sun-Mi.............. Hello?

Cho-Jeh............ (speaking excitedly) Sun-Mi? There's something I gotta tell you!

Sun-Mi.............. Hey, slow down! How was your date with Choi Jin-Soo?

Cho-Jeh............ Oh yes... (smiles) We were at the game together; everything was going as planned, when, you won't believe it...

Sun-Mi.............. What?

Cho-Jeh............ You’d better sit down first...

Sun-Mi.............. (impatiently) Cho-Jeh, just get to the point!

Cho-Jeh............ What happened at the party, was only the beginning! What we saw was the proof of that!

Sun-Mi.............. Proof of what?

Cho-Jeh............ That Director Yoon and Young-Mi are dating now! They went to the game together, and were even holding hands!

....................... It’s only been a few days since he split with Joo-Hee, and she’s already got her claws into him!

Sun-Mi’s catches her breath when she hears this, but tries to keep seem unconcerned.

Cho-Jeh............ Sun-Mi, you've gotta do something to stop her!

Sun-Mi.............. What am I supposed to do? Director Yoon can date anyone he chooses.

Cho-Jeh............ Exactly! So why can't it be you? Don't hold back anymore! Fight for your man!

Sun-Mi.............. (tiredly) It's too late for that. I told you already, we've decided to keep our relationship impersonal.

Cho-Jeh............ (exasperated) It's never too late. Tell him you changed your mind. Isn't that a woman's prerogative?

Sun-Mi.............. I don't know, Cho-Jeh... I just need time to think, to figure things out, before I jump in too deep again.

Cho-Jeh............ Don't wait too long to jump, or the pool will be dry!

Sun-Mi.............. (weakly) I have to go now. Bye...

Sun-Mi puts down the phone and stares at it, not knowing what to do, or feel...

SCENE: In the corridor outside Young-Mi’s apartment, night

Woo-Jin comes to Young-Mi’s apartment and tries to put his key into her lock. It doesn’t go in.

He checks the apartment number, then tries another key. It doesn’t fit either. He looks at the apartment number again.

He takes out his cell phone and calls Young-Mi’s phone.

Voicemail.......... The person you are trying to reach has turned off the phone. Please try again later.

SCENE: Inside a pojangmacha, night

After the ballgame, Young-Mi and Hyung-Chul go to a nearby pojangmacha (tented streetside bar) to eat.

There, they order soju and anju.

Young-Mi takes a sip and acts as if the alcohol is too strong for her.

Young-Mi.......... Thank you. A toast to you.

Hyung-Chul....... No, I’m driving so you can drink. It’s a day off so don’t you have a date? Is Kim Woo-Jin busy?

Young-Mi.......... How about you?

Hyung-Chul is silent.

Young-Mi.......... You keep pushing me away. What am I lacking compared to Jin Sun-Mi?

Hyung-Chul still does not answer.

Young-Mi.......... Do you love Sun-Mi?

Hyung-Chul....... Miss Huh Young-Mi, I don’t think we have a relationship where we can talk about things like that.

Young-Mi.......... Of course, we’re not that close. However, there are times when only one person starts...

Hyung-Chul....... You’re a very confusing person. I thought you loved Kim Yoo-Jin. I don’t think you know your true feelings.

Young-Mi.......... No. I know very well. I say this knowingly ... Love isn’t a matter of right and wrong. It’s a matter of “is” or “isn’t”.

She waits for him to respond, but he remains silent.

Young-Mi.......... Isn’t that right?

Hyung-Chul....... It’s late. Let’s go.

Hyung-Chul gets up to leave.

Young-Mi slowly stands. She smiles to herself, realizing that perhaps she is finally making inroads with Hyung-Chul.

SCENE: Outside Young-Mi’s apartment, night

Woo-Jin sits on the steps outside Young-Mi’s apartment, waiting. He checks his watch, wondering where she could be.

SCENE: On a quiet street, night

Hyung-Chul and Young-Mi are walking back to his car, along an empty sidewalk.

Young-Mi.......... How much do you know about me? What has Sun-Mi said?

Hyung-Chul....... Why not speak for yourself?

They walk on a few more steps before she answers him...

Young-Mi.......... After my father died, Mr. Jin took me in and supported me. Coming from a small town, I was overwhelmed by Seoul.

....................... Woo-Jin was kind to me, and I suppose I let myself fall in love. I didn’t intend to get between him and Sun-Mi.

Hyung-Chul....... Why are you telling me this?

Young-Mi.......... You asked if Woo-Jin and I had a date tonight. Actually, we’re reconsidering if we even have a future together.

....................... (sighs) I admit I’m not vey confident about that anymore. His heart seems to be elsewhere lately.

Hyung-Chul....... You’re saying that you’ve broken up with Reporter Kim?

Young-Mi.......... In all that really matters, yes. You saw he came with Sun-Mi to the party, and she was looking at him all night...

Hyung-Chul....... What are you trying to say?

Young-Mi.......... Now that Woo-Jin and I are parting ways, it seems he’s going back to Sun-Mi again...

....................... So if Sun-Mi is with Woo-Jin, where does that leave you... and me?

Hyung-Chul doesn’t answer, he is immersed in his own thoughts...

FLASHBACK  [After the party outside Hyung-Chul’s villa apartment, the previous night]

Sun-Mi........ Let’s keep our relationship strictly professional... forget the past and move on... Isn't it the best way?

SCENE: Sun-Mi’s bedroom, night

Sun-Mi comes into her bedroom, drying her hair after a shower, and picks up her work tote to take something out.

The bag falls off her desk, spilling the contents on the floor, including the video tape that Hyung-Chul gave to her.

She sees it, is curious, and puts it into the VCR. Then she sits on the bed to watch the tape.

On the videotape, Hyung-Chul appears; he adjusts the camera to center the image. Sun-Mi watches the screen intently.

Hyung-Chul....... (on video) Hmmm... (laughs nervously) I feel kinda foolish. But the reason I want to give this to you ...

....................... Jin Sun-Mi ... Don’t cry again ... More than anything in the world your crying hurts me.

Sun-Mi watches with a shy expression as if Hyung-Chul was actually there with her.

On the tape, Hyung-Chul points a remote control device toward the camera and pushes a button.

The tape switches to a video clip of Sun-Mi on camera at the news desk.

Sun-Mi.............. (on video) Hello, I’m number 1508, Jin Sun-Mi....

Sun-Mi appears surprised to see this clip of herself, recorded during her oral exams for admission to the MBS training program.

Sun-Mi.............. (continues on video) The reason I want to be an announcer is to present happy news to the world.

....................... In Pusan, a new place for film production... a Japanese company will build ...

She stops speaking, raises a finger to signal the cameraman to stop recording, and smiles...

Sun-Mi.............. I’ll try one more time...

Sun-Mi smiles as she watches the next clip begin...

Sun-Mi.............. (on video) Hello, I’m Jin Sun-Mi. Today on ‘Let’s See the World’... (hiccups)

Studio audience. (on video, laughing)

Sun-Dal............ (on video) You seem to be very nervous since it’s your first time...

Sun-Mi smiles as she recalls how nervous she was for her debut appearance on the Morning Show.

Sun-Mi.............. (on video) National Park, O-Dong Island is recovering fro her past wounds. ...

Sun-Mi laughs as she watches herself.

Sun-Mi.............. (continues on video) This made us think about just how much modern society has disrupted nature...

Finally it strikes Sun-Mi, that from the beginning Hyung-Chul was always watching her, always concerned about her.

Hyung-Chul....... (on video) This is your expression that I like the most...

Sun-Mi’s eyes start tearing up.

Hyung-Chul....... (on video) I’ll always make you smile like this. I promise.

Sun-Mi’s tears run freely as she watches, her hopes returning...

Sun-Mi.............. (longingly) Senior...

SCENE: Outside Young-Mi’s apartment, night

Woo-Jin comes out of Young-Mi’s apartment building just as Hyung-Chul drives up in his car with Young-Mi.

He steps back against the building, into the shadows, so they won’t see him.

Young-Mi takes off her seatbelt and opens the car door; Hyung-Chul does the same.

They both get down out of the car at the same time, as Woo-Jin watches.

Hyung-Chul....... Go inside.

Hyung-Chul is starting to get back into the car, but Young-Mi speaks up.

Young-Mi.......... Director Yoon, I mean it with all my heart. My feelings, what happened today... Don’t forget them, OK?

Hyung-Chul looks at Young-Mi but doesn't answer; he just gets into his car and drives off.

Young-Mi waits at the curb, watching as Hyung-Chul leaves.

As she turns to go to her apartment building, Woo-Jin steps out of the shadows so Young-Mi can see him.

Surprised, Young-Mi realizes that Woo-Jin has probably been watching, an doverheard what she said to Hyung-Chul.
